Our concerts and Afternoon Teas are sure to satisfy the diverse music connoisseurs amongst our patrons and of course, we continue to offer a variety of classes, exhibitions, and other arts activities. The Smokin’ Polecats

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2 PM

AFTERNOON TEA:

The Smokin’ Polecats Bill Wax of WPFW Radio said it best when he said, “The Smokin’ Polecats play the blues in all styles and for all tastes.” They are the best blues band in the DC metropolitan area. It is the years and depth of experience that the band members share, which have afforded them that reputation. Their sound comes from the Post-World War II ensemble sound of the Chicago Masters like Jimmy Rogers, Little Walter, and Howlin’ Wolf; the West Coast Jump/Swing sound of Tiny Grimes, Pee Wee Crayton, and T-Bone Walker; the Rock’a’Billy sound of Carl Perkins and Johnny Burnette; and the Louisiana swamp blues of Slim Harpo. They don’t just play songs by these artists, they have their own sound that consists of a melding together of all these sounds.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 8 PM

Russell Thompkins Jr. and the New Stylistics

CONCERT:

Russell Thompkins Jr. and the New Stylistics features the original lead singers of one of the best-known Philadelphia soul groups of the 1970s. The Stylistics formed in 1968 and included singers Russell Thompkins Jr., Herb Murrell, Airrion Love, James Smith and James Dunn. All of their U.S. hits were ballads graced by the soaring falsetto voice of Russell Thompkins Jr., which helped make The Stylistics one of the most successful soul groups of the first half of the 1970s. During the early 1970s, the group had twelve consecutive U.S. R&B top ten hits, including “Stop, Look, Listen,” “You Are Everything,” “Betcha By Golly, Wow,” “People Make the World Go Round,” and “You Make Me Feel Brand New.”

Cissa Paz

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2 PM

AFTERNOON TEA: Trifilio Tango Trio Led by bandoneonist Emmanuel Trifilio, and featuring Devree Lewis on cello and Ramon Gonzalez on guitar, Trifilio Tango Trio presents a fresh perspective on the Argentinean music genre. Their concert repertoire is almost entirely comprised of Sr. Trifilio’s original tango pieces: brand new, yet true to the tango tradition. The group performs in many environments from their weekly appearances at DC’s Rumba Cafe to providing live music for local milongas (tango dances).

AFTERNOON TEA:

Cissa Paz Trio

“The bounding momentum of some of [Cissa Paz’s] sambas is uncompromising and she evokes the joie de vivre of much that is beautiful about being Brazilian.” (World Music Report). Performing in Portuguese, Portuguese Creole, Spanish, French, and English, Cissa Paz (accompanied by guitar and bass) creates and rearranges songs that are melded with the rich traditions of Afro-Brazilian and Luso-African concepts. With a voice that is soft and soulful and a vibrant stage presence, Cissa is fun to watch and enjoys talking about the lyrics and teaching audiences about the styles of music she performs.

LeVert II

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14, 8 PM

CONCERT: LeVert

II

LeVert formed in the 1980s in Cleveland, Ohio with Gerald and Sean Levert and lifelong friend, Marc Gordon. The trio formula of combining soulful ballads and up-tempo beats with catchy hooks produced a dynamic catalog of music.

During the mid-’80s and ’90s, LeVert racked up hit singles such as “Pop Pop Pop Goes My Mind,” “Just Coolin’” (featuring Heavy D), and their biggest hit, “Casanova.” As fate would have it, in 2006 came the untimely passing of the legendary crooner, Gerald Levert. With a renewed sense of purpose, Sean and Marc vowed to continue the legacy and added Blaq Rose to complete the trio. Taking on the name “LeVert II,” they went back to the recording studio and the lyrics and harmonies continued to flow. In the midst of the rebirth, tragedy struck again and in 2008, Sean unexpectedly passed away. With the blessing of Eddie Levert, father of Gerald and Sean, and founding member of the legendary O’Jays, Marc Gordon, Blaq Rose and newest member, Parrice Smith, continue the legacy of LeVert through the music of LeVert II.

AFTERNOON TEA: Facing

Facing East

East

Master Flutist John Wubbenhorst has the unique distinction of being a fluent virtuoso on both the Bansuri (bamboo flute) and Western flute. He is truly a World musician having played and studied Western classical and jazz, as well as in-depth studies of Eastern music in Asia and Europe. Performing from his first album, “Facing East,” Wubbenhorst appears with Afghanistan native and vocalist Humayun Khan, who has shared the stage with some of the greatest legends of Indian Classical music and has toured the world, performing in numerous international festivals and concerts. Khan’s performance style ranges from purely classical khayal renditions to a classically oriented presentation of the poetry of the great Persian masters, Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi and Hafiz.

SENIOR ARTS SERIES: Temptations

Revue

Formerly known as Smooth N Company, David Smooth’s Temptations Revue brings the songs of Motown to Harmony Hall Regional Center. For over 30 years, group members David Smooth, Larry Skinner, Mike Lewis, Michael Joiner, and Jerome Blanding have been entertaining audiences at venues throughout the metropolitan area. Join us at they perform a tribute to one of Motown’s most successful and celebrated groups: The Temptations.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2 PM

AFTERNOON TEA:

David Wright & The Wright Touch David Wright’s style and experience always create a connection with his audience. The songs are all introduced with a short informative story and performed with a dramatic and musical appeal. Wright, vocalist and saxophonist, has performed his Great American Songbook concerts at venues such as Union Station for the Duke Ellington Centennial, The Cosmos Club, Twins Jazz, and The Library of Congress. Today, his quartet includes Rick Whitehead, a recognized master of the jazz guitar and former leader of the premier jazz ensemble of the U.S. Air Force, The Airmen of Note. Laying down the rhythm is the dynamic duo of Barry Hart (“Heart Beat”) on drums and Steven “The Professor” Miller on string bass.

CONCERT: Slave This R&B and Funk Band from Dayton, Ohio has been known as one of the first purveyors of the Midwest funk, soul and pop sound that became popular during the mid ’70s and throughout the mid ’80s. Slave toured with all of the major recording acts of their time including the Sugar Foot’s Ohio Players, Cameo, The Dazz Band, ConFunkshun, Zapp, Midnight Star, and many other national recording acts. Their first big hit was the thumping single “Slide” in 1977 for Cotillion, where they remained until 1984. Other Top Ten R&B hits included “Just a Touch of Love” in 1979, “Watching You” in 1980, and “Snap Shot” in 1981.

Purcell Trio

Jazz vocalist Darden Purcell is a multi-faceted musician and active featured soloist with symphony orchestras, big bands and small ensembles, as well as a bandleader and vocal instructor. In addition to her active performing schedule, Purcell is a sought-after jazz vocal educator and clinician. With her trio, she’ll present an entertaining mix of Jazz classics & American Songbook standards.

Barry Gurley

Barry Gurley Duo

Washingtonian Magazine named Barry Gurley “Best Pianist-Vocalist” in Washington, D.C. His career has taken him to countless venues, including Washington, D.C.’s Blues Alley, New York City’s The Blue Note, The Monterey Jazz Festival, and Le Bilboquet in Paris. Mr. Gurley plays uniquely stylized versions of songs from the ’40s and ’50s jazz vocal repertoire, songs by pop artists such as The Beatles and Stevie Wonder, as well as those of current jazz vocal stalwarts Al Jarreau, Jon Hendricks, and others. His eclectic style and repertoire transitions from American standards to songs that have withstood the test of time.

Part Harmony

CONCERT: Part

Harmony

Part Harmony is one of Baltimore’s finest a cappella groups. Established in 1984, three brothers, along with two cousins, set out to bring joy to the hearts of everyone who listens to their songs. Known for their ability to bring back the sounds of Doo Wop mixed with Motown and Flash, Part Harmony always seems to please their audience. Becoming an attraction each summer at Baltimore City’s Inner Harbor Downtown Amphitheater, their popularity grows with every performance. Some of their accomplishments consist of sharing the stage with some very elite company such as Sinbad, Angela Bofield, Natalie Cole, The Four Tops, The Drifters, and others. They also had a cameo appearance in Charles Dutton’s directorial debut “The Corner” and the first episode of “Homicide.” With its flair for style and music, Part Harmony promises to continue to bring wholesome fun to everyone.

KIDS’ DAY OUT: Winter

Fables

For this cozy little show we are returning to Aesop’s fables to bring to life some amazing winter-inspired tales. Our spirited performers take your young audience on a hilarious and highly entertaining journey. They cover valuable lessons from “The Ant and the Grasshopper” to “The Country Mouse and the City Mouse.” The audience will walk away with strong charactereducation influence and a boatload of uproarious laughter! They will learn about responsibility, honesty and appreciating what they already have just in time to get into the spirit of the season.

AFTERNOON TEA:

The Beltway Brass Quintet Get an exclusive preview of The Beltway Brass Quintet’s holiday concert performed every year at the Kennedy Center with lots of original holiday brass music! Trumpet players and co-leaders Zachary Smith, Charlie Peterson, as well as Tubist Tom Holtz, have written most of the arrangements for the group. Each member of the ensemble has a background rooted in jazz, as well as classical performance. This allows them to incorporate their incredible jazz technique and improvisation into their totally entertaining performance.

Forever Yours–A Tribute to the Music of the O’Jays CONCERT:

Come out and be prepared to take a stroll down memory lane featuring Forever Yours, an O’Jays tribute and soul vocal group. The ensemble is comprised of four talented musicians and vocalists that have a combined entertainment history spanning over thirty years. Their music will take you back to a time when the Philly Soul sound was at the top of the R&B music charts and the O’Jays kept those hits coming year after year. Forever Yours has captured the stylish choreography, the soulful harmony, and the excitement of a live concert by The Mighty, Mighty O’jays.

AUDITIONS: Missoula

Children’s Theatre’s Cinderella Missoula Children’s Theatre provides two professional tour actor/directors who will audition and cast 50-60 local elementary and secondary school students in a full-length, original musical production of Cinderella. Children must be at the John Addison Concert Hall by 4:30 pm. Latecomers will not be admitted. Please wear comfortable clothing. All materials for song and movement auditions will be provided.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10, 2 PM

AFTERNOON TEA: AWOL This versatile a cappella vocal quartet are active duty members of the military who serve in the Air Force, Navy, and Army. They focus on celebrating men’s quartet music from modern arrangements of classic barbershop songs to widely acclaimed arrangements of American folk music. These seasoned professional vocalists enjoy a diverse array of musical education and performance experiences in the Washington, D.C. area to include the Washington National Opera, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, as well as their highly acclaimed active duty performances.

Missoula Children’s Theatre’s Cinderella The Missoula Children’s Theatre presents Cinderella, an original adaptation of the classic fairy tale. A pumpkin coach, Prince Charming, a glass slipper, and a dream come true are woven together by the magic of a Fairy Godmother in this enchanting musical. When Cinderella’s stepsisters try to keep Cinderella from attending the ball, the Fairy Godmother enlists the help of the Mice and the Pumpkins and is able to transform Cinderella just in time for the big event. Also featured in the production are Cleo the Cat, Fido the Dog, the Lords and Ladies, the Town Criers, the King and the Beggars.

Experience the unique twist the Missoula Children’s Theatre puts on this classic story.

AFTERNOON TEA:

Mutual Agreement

Mutual Agreement, which means “a covenant with God,” is a gospel vocal ensemble whose purpose is to spread the word of God through song wherever the opportunity allows. The group has ministered in various parts of the country and performed with national recording artists such as Daryl Coley, Wintley Phipps, Sounds of Blackness, CeCe Winans, and Hezekiah Walker to name a few. They are members of the Gospel Music Workshop of America and have appeared on Showtime at the Apollo and the Breath of Life Telecast. Mutual Agreement has also performed at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. and was awarded for their participation in the Celebration of Black History at the U.S. Department of State by former Secretary of State Madeline Albright. Mutual Agreement was nominated one of the eight best a cappella vocal bands in the MidAtlantic region of the United States by the Mid-Atlantic Regional Harmony Association. They have been featured on various television and radio programs and have one recording “Back to Basics” available.

of a People

You’re invited to our FREE Black History celebration featuring musical performances, children’s activities, workshops, and entertainment for the entire family. This year we welcome back some of our regular favorites, including our warm and engaging greeter and storyteller, Baba-C and our always popular Culture Queen, Jessica Smith. Activities will include mask making, face painting, a caricaturist, a make-and-take pottery workshop and a S.T.E.A.M. workshop, and just like in year’s past, our performances on stage are sure to please.

Esther Williams Trio

Esther Williams presents an exciting program of jazz standards, Rhythm & Blues with a touch of gospel thrown in. Her name is one you’re sure to remember once you’ve seen this sensuous talented entertainer. It is said that in just one set, Esther will take you from a whispered, heart-warming ballad to a swinging, jazzy standard; right into something that gets into your body and makes you move. Along with her husband, Davey Yarborough, Esther shares a passion for and commitment to music and art in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan community. Together, they’ve developed the Washington Jazz Arts Institute teaching young musicians to excel in an exciting and stimulating environment.

Holman

Vocalist extraordinaire Eddie Holman is one of the most listened-to artists in the field of popular and classic R&B music. Born in Norfolk, Virginia and raised in New York City, Holman showed his smooth tenor voice at an early age by winning Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater at age 10. After singing with The Delfonics and The Stylistics, he finally struck personal gold in 1970 with his ballad, “Hey There Lonely Girl,� which peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold record in March 1970. Eddie Holman works year-round, performing at concert halls throughout the world and mesmerizing throngs with his rich tenor voice and the original Philly sound, which he helped define. His exemplary career has certainly stood the test of time and his dignified musical legacy is one that will continue to flourish for as long as there is a song to sing.

The Damon Foreman Duo

A charismatic performer, Damon along with his bass player, brings eclectic artistry and breaks through the boundaries of music genres. He can soothe your soul with his jazz, wake your spirit with his soul, jump start your heart with his funk, and light your fire with his rock. Damon has toured throughout the world playing many styles of music with major artists such as Ashford and Simpson, Gladys Night, Sista Monica, Mary Wells, and Parliament Funkadelic. He has major label production credits on Sire Records, Warner Brothers, and others. Damon loves to perform and leaves listeners with a knowing that they have experienced something different and awesome.

In other words, he rocks!

CONCERT: Peaches

Peaches & Herb

& Herb

Peaches & Herb are an American vocal duo, once comprising of D.C. natives Herb Fame and Francine “Peaches” Barker. The group’s first single, “We’re in This Thing Together” enjoyed modest success, but month’s later, the “B” side’s “Let’s Fall in Love” became a huge hit, which began a string of extraordinarily successful hits. It was followed up by “Close Your Eyes,” “For Your Love,” and the smash hit song, “Love is Strange,” which established Peaches & Herb as international stars. The duo continued touring and recording through the late ‘60s until his retirement in 1970. In 1978, Herb, with a new “Peaches,” came back with the monster hits, “Shake Your Groove Thing” and “Reunited,” which reached #1 in 1980. A year later, Peaches & Herb released “I Pledge My Love,” a song that has been widely used as a wedding march and reached #6 in the world. Peaches & Herb have continued to perform both nationally and internationally and are a featured act on the highly regarded “’70s Soul Jam” tour. The duo continues to be America’s Sweethearts of Soul.

Seikaly/Herberman Duo

Lena Seikaly is a fresh voice on the national jazz scene from Washington, D.C. Named “one of Washington’s preeminent jazz singers” and “brightest voices in jazz” (The Washington Post), as well as a “major league young talent in jazz”

by Duke Ellington’s biographer, Dr. John Hasse, Lena is already making her mark as both a revivalist of traditional jazz vocals, as well as an innovator in contemporary vocal jazz styles. Joining Seikaly on stage is master performer, educator, and jazz guitarist Steve Herberman. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, he has performed at venues such as Birdland in New York City, Spazio in Los Angeles, the NAMM shows in Anaheim and Nashville, and recently at the North Wales jazz guitar weekend in the U.K. as a featured guest artist. Closer to home, Herberman has performed at Blues Alley, the Smithsonian Jazz Cafe, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

CONCERT: The

Floaters

The Floaters is a staple on the current “’70s Soul Jam Tour.” Best known for their 1977 smash hit, “Float On,” the band started as a quartet with members Larry Cunningham, Charles Clark, Robert Palmer, and Paul Mitchell. The song’s lyrics spotlight each member of the band, who introduced themselves with their name, astrological sign, and ideal type of romantic partner. It became a worldwide hit in 1977 on ABC Records, reaching #1 on the US R&B and UK Singles charts, and #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The Floaters will take you for a stroll down memory lane and will leave you singing “Float On” for weeks to come.

The Clazzical Project

AFTERNOON TEA: The

Clazzical Project

The Clazzical Project group is a cross between classical and jazz and aptly coined by the group as “outside the ‘Bachs” making it accessible to music lovers of all kinds. Listeners will enjoy “ingenious and beautiful juxtaposition of jazz treatments against iconic classical melodies,” according to Jeffrey Silberschlag, Music Director of Chesapeake Orchestra and Italy’s Alba Music Festival. The performance will take you on a journey of mind bending “What ifs;” combining famous classical works with improvisational jazz. Through stories both fictional and funny, commentaries on each piece include an almost believable fantasy allowing you to imagine the possibility of unusual musical classical composer and jazz artist meet-ups surprising the listener again and again.

CONCERT: L.T.D. Tribute

Band

L.T.D., which stands for Love, Togetherness, and Devotion, is an American R&B/funk band formed in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1968. The band is best known for their 1977 hit single, “Back in Love Again” and “Holding On,” as well as their many ballads, “Love Ballad,” “We Both Deserve Each Other’s Love,” and “Where Did We Go Wrong.” The BRENCORE ALLSTARS Band is known to produce several great tributes to artists and bands over the years and this tribute will take you back to the days of the sweet love ballads of L.T.D.

Johnson Trio

Native Washingtonian, Allyn Johnson, is a multi-talented musician, composer, arranger, and producer whose trademark sound gives brilliance fortitude to the art of jazz improvisation. Joining Johnson is D.C.-native and jazz vocalist Christie Dashiell, whose history includes performances with Howard’s premiere vocal jazz ensemble, Afro-Blue. She has performed at the Kennedy Center as a part of the 2010 Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead residency program and Lincoln Theater in Washington, D.C. She is also the recipient of Downbeat magazine’s Best College Graduate Jazz Vocalist and Outstanding Soloist awards in the jazz vocal category. Mousey Thompson & The James Brown Experience is an all-star ensemble that faithfully performs the most popular songs of one of the greatest music legends of our time, James Brown. This outstanding band is led by accomplished drummer Robert “Mousey” Thompson, who performed with James Brown from 1993–2006. After James Brown passed away, Thompson assembled his own stellar group of talented musicians to pay tribute to James Brown’s legacy. In addition to an amazing rhythm section led by Thompson, the band features a terrific horn section as well as the impressive showmanship of lead singer Gregory Cooper. The band performs James Brown’s biggest hits such as “This is a Man’s World,” “Please, Please, Please,” “Cold Sweat,” and many others. Mousey Thompson & The James Brown Experience puts on an extraordinary show that has audiences dancing all night long.

Melissa Burley: Existence August 14 – October 6, 2017 Free Public Reception: Saturday, August 19 The illuminated sculptures by local artist Melissa Burley, strive to investigate the concept of “beauty after death.” Incorporating natural, manmade, and recycled materials, Ms. Burley creates beautiful and complex, machine-inspired compositions bathed in light that seek to highlight and call attention to our role in the preservation of this earth.

By incorporating a strong light source and combining and arranging discarded artifacts that ordinarily would end up in a landfill, Ms. Burley creates a wide pattern of shadows on the surrounding wall and floor surfaces, thereby luring in the viewer.

Sole Purpose: The Shoe October 23 – December 22, 2017 Free Public Reception: Saturday, November 4, 5–7 pm This exhibition is the culmination of a community engagement with local and regional artists of all ages and creative backgrounds. Artists re-interpret the purpose, function, and meaning of the shoe, by transforming it from a utilitarian object, to that of a fantastical, quirky, and otherworldly design and purpose. Because shoes are an essential item for many people, yet not afforded by all, donations of sturdy, gently used shoes will be accepted and distributed to area charities.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH EXHIBITION

We Return Fighting: World War I and the African American Experience Sunday, January 28 – Friday, March 9, 2018 Opening Reception: Sunday, January 28, 2– 4 pm In honor of the 100th anniversary of the United States involvement in World War I, this exhibit explores the experiences of African Americans both at home and abroad during this conflict and the years surrounding it. Despite the oppressive racial climate in America in the opening decades of the 20th century, African Americans staunchly supported the war effort in a variety of ways. This exhibit highlights the experiences of black men and women during this era, with a special focus on the African American soldiers from Prince George’s County and their families.

Joyce Wellman: Momma’s Numbers March 26 – May 18, 2018 Reception: Saturday, March 31, 5–7 pm Wellman draws from her experience in the plastic and the mathematical arts to examine her mother’s enjoyment in “playing the numbers.” She looks at her mother’s meticulous organization and sources of inspiration as a process of hope, drawing a parallel to the experiences of others, with numbers across cultures, history, and time.

Nastassja Swift June 4 – July 27, 2018 Reception: Saturday, June 9, 5–7 pm Felt, wool, and other natural fibers are shaped into sculptures that present narratives from the artist’s childhood memories and imagination. Partaking from her needle felted dolls series, where she created dolls, sculptures, and mixed media assemblages, Nastassja creates an immersive environment that engages and mesmerizes audiences of all ages.
