Get Up & The Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County, encourages residents to “live more, play more” by providing fun and diverse programs at our local community centers, parks, and facilities. During National Physical Fitness & Sports Month, this mission is especially important as we continue to support your path to wellness by offering a variety of FREE and low-cost fitness programs designed to help you get up & get fit!

Nowadays, we are surrounded by new technology that keeps us glued to our screens. Typically, these innovations can make daily tasks quicker and easier. However, now people are spending more time sitting than ever before!

So it should come as no surprise that many health experts describe sitting as the new smoking; excessive time on your bum can pose a serious threat to your health.

Numerous studies indicate that sitting for more than three hours per day contributes to an increased risk for chronic disease such as cancer, heart disease, obesity and even depression. Today chronic disease affects the health and wellbeing of over 40% of Americans, costing over 90% of the nation’s 3.3 trillion in annual healthcare expenditures.

The Health & Wellness Team challenges you to move this May! Take the challenge and prove it by sending in your Healthy Selfie! (Please see the next page for more details about the Healthy Selfie Challenge). Whether it’s visiting the Get Fit Mobile Unit at one of our parks or taking a class at a community center or sports facility, this May is packed with opportunities to get up & get fit at little to no cost! Come discover all the ways you can “live more, play more” with the Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County.

May is National Physical Fitness & Sports Month! This year, the Health & Wellness team challenges you, your friends, and family to get up & get fit with a variety of FREE and low-cost fitness programs throughout the County!

This month we invite you to participate in the Healthy Selfie Challenge for a chance to win Department of Parks and Recreation sponsored giveaways, gift certificates, and prizes! The more free and low-cost fitness activities you attend, and the more Healthy Selfies you submit, the more chances you have to win! THREE winners will be chosen.

2. Submission deadlines: No later than Friday, May 31, 2019 at 11:59 am.

3. C hallenge entries will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

a. Does your Healthy Selfie show you engaged in physical activity? b. I s the appropriate event name/location/ time (as listed in this brochure) indicated with a short description of your experience?

Growing a Healthier Community Through M-NCPPC Shared Gardens

COMMUNITY Community gardens, which are shared plots of land where individuals or groups of people gather to grow fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs, are spreading across the nation in urban and suburban areas. If you’ve ever been a part of one, you’ll know why. The enrichment that comes from connecting people to a common good, along with time in nature and growing nutritious food, helps to build a stronger sense of community – an opportunity for people of diverse backgrounds, ages, and needs to interact with each other and learn from one another.

M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County is aware of the value these shared gardens have in the community and has made it its mission to provide them to people of all ages and abilities. Continue reading to learn more about our garden plots in the County.

Where Communities and Food Come Together.

Community gardens are located on land that is divided into different plots for individual and family use. Generally, gardeners prepare, plant, and harvest from their own plots.

The Department has four community gardens sites (with a total of 132 individual plots) with water connections available for rental.

The plots range in size from 10’x20’ to 25’x30’ and range in price from $30 to $55 per plot. Youth Gardens

Planting a seed that will last a lifetime.

The Department of Parks and Recreation has seven youth gardens at community centers throughout the County.

These gardens are used to teach kids how to plant, grow, and harvest their own vegetables. The gardens also contain pollinator plants that are used to teach kids the importance of pollinators and their role in the food chain. Gardening programs, which are taught weekly by Park Rangers and community center staff, include lessons about the plant cycle, plant maintenance and care, nutrition, and healthy eating.

Youth gardens sites range from four to eight beds and beds are typically 4’x12’. Multi-generational Garden John E. Howard Senior Activity Center in Capitol Heights is a home to a garden that is used by community members of all ages. The five garden beds were constructed twice as tall as normal raised beds so that they could be more easily accessible to persons with disabilities and in wheelchairs.

Those interested in using the multi-generational garden can call center staff at 301-735-2400.

Pollinator Meadows Pollinator meadows are large pollinator habitats that feature a variety of native wildflowers and grasses. These meadows provide food and shelter for beneficial insects, birds, and other wildlife.

The Department is in the process of converting 15 acres of land into pollinator specific habitat this year. Below are the sites and acreage being seeded with a Xerces Mid-Atlantic pollinator mix to be converted into pollinator meadows. .

In the fall and spring months, Kids’ Care programs utilize the gardens to grow beets, broccoli, brussel sprouts, carrots, collards, lettuce, kale, radishes, spinach, and Swiss chard.

In the summer months, summer camp participants are out growing beans, carrots, cucumbers, eggplant, okra, peppers, pumpkins, squash, sunflowers, tomatoes, and watermelons.

Using the fresh produce grown in the gardens, kids are able to take part in cooking demonstrations that teach them how to make recipes such as smoothies, kale chips, and cooked greens.

The Department of Parks and Recreation is dedicated to utilizing this new avenue to connect patients/customers with our parks and services to improve their quality of life. Park Rx America is the only Park Rx program to link a “park formulary’’ (searchable database of parks) directly into the electronic health record (EHR) to allow providers the ability to prescribe parks “real time” to their patients. We believe this will encourage overall behavioral change, improve health outcomes, and foster new stewards and advocates for public lands.

GOALS OF PARK RX AMERICA: • Help doctors and other health professionals “prescribe nature” to patients and families during routine delivery of health care.

The Arthritis Foundation Walk with Ease program is a walking program that can reduce pain and improve overall health.

What began as a virtual walk across Maryland, one mile at a time (a total of 300 miles), has grown and blossomed into a virtual walk across America!

Governor Bridge Natural Area With over 2 miles of natural surface trails, the Governor Bridge Natural Area is an excellent area for hiking, biking, bird watching, and nature study. All trails are identified by white fiberglass markers with color coded diamond directional arrows. Users are encouraged to evaluate trail conditions prior to use and follow proper trail etiquette.

Henson Creek Trail Enjoy 5.7 miles of biking, hiking, jogging, and inline skating on an asphalt surface, or horse riding along the grassy shoulder of the trail. The scenic, recreational trail passes through several neighborhood and community parks, including Tucker Road Athletic Complex and Community Center.
