Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. María in Nobody’s Land is an unprecedented and intimate look at the illegal and extremely dangerous journey of three Salvadoran women to the U.S. Doña Inés, a 60-year-old woman, has been looking for her daughter for five years and is following the same route her daughter took. Marta and Sandra, tired of the violence from their husbands and wanting to overcome poverty, decide to leave their families behind to travel to America - with only thirty dollars in their pockets. Aquí: Pedro returns home to a small mountain village in Guerrero, Mexico after years of working in the U.S. He finds his daughters older and more distant than he imagined. His wife still has the same smile. Having saved earnings from trips to the U.S., he hopes to make a better life and to pursue his dreams of starting a band. Allá: The villagers think this year’s crop will be bountiful. There is also good work in a growing city an hour away; however, the locals are wise to a life of insecurity, and their thoughts are often of family members or opportunities far away, north of the border. From Harvard University’s Sensory Ethnography Lab, known for pushing the boundaries of aesthetics and nonfiction films, El mar la mar explores the U.S./Mexico Sonoran desert border with an experimental approach that at times borders on total abstraction while touching on the narratives and experiences of the migrants and border patrol agents that traverse the region. Masterful Argentine guitarist, Dani Cortaza, performs Argentine Folk Music seasoned with elements of jazz.
