From the Garden to the Kitchen: Seasonal Selections Using produce from the garden and orchard, the Riversdale Kitchen Guild members cook over an open hearth in the Dependency kitchen. Selections are inspired by the traditional seasonal cycles of a 19th century farm. Drop by to watch them work from noon to 3:30 pm on selected Sundays: February 28, March 13, April 3, April 17, May 8, May 22, June 5, and June 19. GARDEN TOURS are also scheduled at 1:30 pm and 2:30 pm on these dates—FREE with paid admission.
Volunteer Opportunities Immerse yourself in history! As volunteers, you’ll dive right into the behind-the-scenes action as you share the story of Riversdale. No experience is necessary—we’ll provide training. Docents lead guided tours of the museum. Education docents assist with school and Scout programs. Or you can work in the garden or museum shop or join the Kitchen Guild cooking in the Dependency.

, a National Historic Landmark, was begun by Henri Joseph Stier, a wealthy immigrant from Antwerp, in 1801. After his return to Europe, his daughter, Rosalie, and her husband, George Calvert, made it their home. Mrs. Calvert’s correspondence tells the story of this family and their elegant house, a story that is an integral part of the history of Prince George’s County, the state of Maryland, and the nation. Today, this historic house museum of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission offers regular tours and special programs throughout the year. Henri Stier was custodian of a collection of fine European paintings, and he left them in Mrs. Calvert’s care until requesting their return in 1816. Before they shipped them back to Antwerp, the Calverts opened their house for people to view them. From April to October, you can see reproductions of 16 of Some of the Finest Paintings Ever in America. There were many people to feed at Riversdale. In February, see how African Americans cooked and ate as you visit The Plummers’ Kitchen. In 1803, Mrs. Calvert had a cook who would “easily learn what he doesn’t know.” Learn what YOU need to know to become one of our cooking volunteers at our Kitchen Guild Open House in March. Also in March, come and learn more about local food traditions at A Taste of Maryland. The Kitchen Guild continues to prepare produce grown in our garden for Seasonal Selections on selected Sundays through the spring and summer. Jane Austen was a contemporary of Mrs. Calvert. In March, Austen Film and Fashion will showcase Austen’s novel Emma. Come and join us for merriment at our lively Tavern Night in April. Enjoy more live music, beginning with free indoor Chamber Concerts. Summer’s Jazz on the Lawn series kicks off in June with a celebration of the Lord Baltimore Country Club, a “convenient and exclusive resort” established at Riversdale in 1914. This is an election year. In April, send your children to spend a Hands-on History Day learning about Senators Hiram Johnson, Thaddeus and Hattie Caraway, and other “political animals” who lived at Riversdale in the 20th century. In May, remember the lives of the Plummers and other families at our African American Family Day. Despite the distance separating her from them, Mrs. Calvert was always her parents’ “affectionate daughter.” Bring your parents or other special adults in your life for FREE Mother’s Day and Father’s Day tours.
