Dear Class of 2024,

Technically, I wasn’t supposed to graduate with you all, but I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of this graduating class. Beginning a college career through a computer screen wasn’t easy. We met our first college friends over Zoom chats and Instagram direct messages; we rushed sororities and fraternities online and we all longed for the beautiful Malibu sunsets we had been promised.

I remember so distinctly the feeling of finally being able to enter campus for the first time, allowed only to sit outside with masks on. I remember the joy of receiving the email that we would be resuming in-person classes. Some of you looked much different than I imagined based on your Zoom screens.

When I think of the class of 2024, I know we are forever united by more than just our alma mater and graduation year. We are a class defined by joy and heartbreak. The heartbreak of losing such a vital part of our college experience, but the immense joy of reveling in our in-person time together. The heartbreak of losing such vibrant and bright members of our community who should be sitting side-by-side and walking across the stage: Alec, Asha, Deslyn, Niamh and Peyton. Yet, as we all receive our degrees today, we are blessed with the joy of having known and loved them.

And we know that we could not have done this alone — we are blessed beyond measure to have the Pepperdine community to lean on, to cry and to celebrate with. As we each embark on life’s biggest adventure yet, we leave behind the campus we called home for three years and carry with us all of its lessons and memories.

I hope each and every one of you is beyond proud of yourself. I am so proud of us all.

With immeasurable love, Marley Penagos (Seaver ‘24)

Dear Class of 2024,

Four years ago, when I hopped onto Zoom for my first college class, I wouldn’t have been able to grasp the love I would develop for the class of 2024.

I remember logging into my first-year seminar, not sure what to expect. About five minutes into class, I got a Zoom chat from Deslyn Williams, wanting to get to know me, hear about my major and talk all about rushing the next week online together. From that moment, I knew this University was full of sincere and genuine people — who I would love and be loved by each and every day.

Throughout my time as a student journalist at Pepperdine, I have had the opportunity to tell many of your stories, and I’ve been inspired by you every day. I’ve learned about the unique talents you each bring to this University and the aspirations you have for your time after Pepperdine. I hope I have been able to tell your stories in a meaningful and thoughtful way.

Even while designing this senior edition, I’ve learned more about the depth of our class, as I have read the funny stories, words of wisdom and tributes your loved ones have written for you.

While we may have had an unconventional four years, we have developed a bond that I will always cherish. We have leaned on each other through tragedy and have celebrated with each other in times of joy. Through Zoom school freshman year, a masked-up sophomore year, a relatively normal junior year and a senior year marked by grief, we have relied on each other and on our faith to get us through.

Pepperdine has so much to offer with academics, athletics and, of course, Malibu, but to me, the best part of this University is the people who fill it. I hope this senior edition can remind you of just that — the people who have made your four years here what they are.

All my best,

Abby Wilt (Seaver ‘24)

You have grown and learned not just academically and through ROTC but about life, mindset and ability. You have taught yourself about real estate, the stock market and business. You continue to tirelessly educate and pursue those fields of interest laying the foundations for your future ventures. At the end of the day, all of these accolades are excellent but what we are MOST proud of is the human you are, the man you are. There is no one we would rather have in life by our side than you. Congratulations!!!

All our love, Mom, Dad Mimi, Tally and Mac

OLIVIA NOELL BAKER

Olivia – You are a true gift from God, and we are so incredibly proud of you. We remember the day when the dream of attending Pepperdine became your reality. For us, we are focused on who you have become since you left for college. The incredible woman you are and how college has been about your willingness to discover your best self. How tirelessly and deliberately you’ve learned how to engage with all the people around you to find your own unique place in the world. Knowing how you navigated and poured your heart into every experience, seeing you accomplish your goals and choosing joy is what we are most proud of. You are courageous, fierce, authentic, and extraordinary. We know without a doubt, you had an amazing 4 years at Pepperdine; you developed fantastic relationships with friends, professors, and co-workers as well as the families you impacted as a Tour Guide for the Office of Admission. Cherish those moments and remember the laughter, the tears, the late-night talks, the sunsets, last minute runs for ice cream and don’t forget the studying, wait, when you look back, forget about the ridiculous number of hours you studied. All that said, your years at Pepperdine contributed to the amazing young woman you are today. It’s your Faith in God and leaning on Him when you are unsure that really makes the difference. Maybe you don’t know the best decision, but you know God will show you the way. Continue to walk in relationship with Christ for it is with Him that you will find your greatest joy and best life. Completing college is a huge accomplishment and there is so much more to life, God’s not done with you! Now get out there and make your dreams come true!

Do You Baby Girl! We love you! Mom and Dad

What a remarkable journey you have taken during your time at Pepperdine! From Covid remote-learning in the cabana, to boot-legged fraternity rush and your new brotherhood at Sigma Chi, to dorm life overlooking the Pacific at Seaside, to studying abroad in Florence, to working with the incomparable Dean Phillips, to condo life on PCH with your pledge brothers, to pledge-training your real little brother and introducing him to all-things of the “White Cross,” to experiencing tragedy and learning how to walk faithfully through life’s greatest sorrows. You have dug into your relationship with Jesus and dove into the some of the world’s greatest literature in the Great Books course, all while perfecting your skills as a chef, baker and botanist extraordinaire! Your journey on this earth may have been cut short, but the impact you left on our lives is immeasurable. We will carry your spirit with us always.

Deslyn, may your soul rest in eternal peace. We love you more than words can say.

Your parents Desmond & Olive

Our angel Asha, we celebrate you at graduation! You gave 100% to everything with your bright and inquiring mind. We are so proud of the beautiful legacy of love, hope and kindness you have left for us all. You truly were a gift to our family and to each person who was fortunate enough to know you. Sometimes you doubted yourself, your humility preventing you from seeing how incredible you were. We see it, Pepperdine sees it, your friends see it. We miss you more than we can say and wish so deeply that we could hug you and watch you celebrating with your friends. You did it Asha! Graduating from Pepperdine was once a dream for you. We applaud loudly your courage and all of your efforts, and we marvel at the amazing young woman you became. We will see you again. We love you forever.

rolston NIAMH

Love, Bridget

Time spent with Niamh was often a bemusing exercise in youthful ignorance of facts and figures and trivia, juxtaposed with moments of unpredictable curiosity and surprise. As a girl and eventually a young woman, she could be decidedly disinterested in the mundane aspects of life. But as her parents, we also were witness to her capacity to set her mind to a task, or to educate herself in the domain of anything that might interest her. She was fearlessly resilient and willing to risk failure in her pursuit of competence and mastery. She overcame obstacles along the way, and wildly exceeded our expectations on many memorable occasions. As her family, we remember Niamh as the young woman we knew her to be: hard working, ambitious, athletic, determined and more than anything, an open hearted optimist. She was also humble, and grateful for her opportunities, and a good teammate and friend to many. Niamh loved to explore new places, meet new people, and embrace the opportunity for a new experience. Throughout her life she established relationships with many of her classmates that were full of joy and depth of feeling. We heard from so many of her friends of the fellowship and love they felt for her, and their memories of places they had experienced together or time spent in each others’ company. She enjoyed nothing so much as the love of a joke shared between friends, and the joyous laughter that frequently accompanied her presence. Throughout her life, one constant was the value she put on relationships with people, and her eagerness to make connections and to experience her life with friends by her side. I think it is fair to say that Niamh saw the inherent good in people, not in a foolish or naive way, but rather, in a way that was charming and endearing. She was also deeply sensitive and concerned about the emotional well being of others, even when it was directed towards people she didn’t know. If she perceived that someone might be uncomfortable or upset or simply in a situation that put them under duress, that bothered her. She frequently made overtures to strangers, expressing concern and offering a compliment or a kind word. To her closest friends we heard many stories of how Niamh was a loyal advocate who seemed to know exactly how to support them when they most needed it, and was always available and present. Compassion and empathy came from the deepest parts of her being. As a young girl there was very little that angered or upset her worse than when she perceived someone was less than considerate in regard to others, and she would be compelled to chide us saying “you’re so mean”. In a world that can for so many people feel cynical, combative and abusive, it is that much harder to feel the loss of her presence in our lives, when she is no longer with us to demand we find a way to be kinder and more compassionate. I hope that people will remember that Niamh loved the Pepperdine community deeply, and the manifestation of that love was her joy in celebrating the people who made it for her, a special place that was everything she hoped it might be. As you go on with your life, should you think about Niamh, I hope you will hear her voice, saying: “Love that for you!”

Niamh was my better half. She had a heart of gold and saw the best in everyone that she came across. She seriously didn’t have one mean bone in her body and always knew how to make everyone around her smile. I miss always having her by my side and feeling so safe in her presence. Love,

Mom
& Dad

Peyton, Asha and Niamh were the best roommates I could have ever asked for. Waking up to their smiles every morning, spending every waking moment with them, and then going to bed to their sweet “goodnights” every night, blessed every day that I had. Peyton was the embodiment of everything good. She was the most generous person I’ve ever met. She got me through my hardest times with absolute ease and grace. Her ambition and drive was unlike any other. She was, and still is, my inspiration in everything that I do. Love,
