Hardware man retiring after amazing career CHRISTINE DALGLEISH Citizen staff

It’s been a 47-year career for one of the longtime employees of Northern Hardware, who is retiring from his retail hardware career at the end of the year.

“I was at Northern Hardware just over 43 years and then I’ve been here at Central Builders’ for three and a half years,” Peter Mueller said. “When we closed the store downtown I was not quite ready to retire. I was 62 then and I’m going to be 67 in January.”

Mueller started at the Northern when he was just 20 years old in 1976.

“I had worked at The Bay that was across the street at the time for a couple

of years part time in their sporting goods, bicycle department, and then there was a job opening to work on bicycles at The Northern and I knew it was the store the community knew to go to and it was a summer job as well and it continued to go forward,” he said.

Recalling the Moffat family’s older generation with great fondness, Mueller said it was a pleasure to work with them.

“It was a family-run store and The Northern was well known as the community’s place to shop. It was quite enjoyable to work there. People would even come from out of town and it was always nice to meet them and talk to them while providing them with their supplies.”

A woman, who was born and raised in Prince George, was found murdered in her home in Mexico earlier this month.

Her family is now speaking out to raise awareness and demand justice in her case.

Val Vardabasso, 58, was living in Puerto Peñasco, also known as Rocky Point, just south of the Arizona border, and was killed in her home on Dec. 14.

Circumstances surrounding Vardabasso’s death are still being investigated by Mexican authorities.

Initial reports say neighbours saw an empty vehicle running in her driveway for a long period of time and suspected something was wrong.

They went to the back of the house to check on her and saw that the sliding door had been forced open.

The neighbours then found Vardabasso’s body, which was inside the shower with her hands and feet bound.

Jordan Anderson, Vardabasso’s cousin, said she had been living in Puerto Peñasco for many years and was working as a house sitter while doing odd jobs.

“She was living her absolute best life in Mexico. She talked so highly of her life in Mexico. She had such a great little community,” said Anderson.

However, Anderson said that Vardabasso was being stalked and had a restraining order on an ex-boyfriend.

“She ended things with him, and it didn’t end well, and he had been stalking her,” said Anderson. “From what I know it was not a quick death. It was pretty horrific. It looks like she put up a really big fight.”

Anderson said what is incredibly difficult is that Vardabasso had just been back to Canada in October to attend Anderson’s father’s funeral.

Vardabasso and Anderson’s father were first cousins and had grown up together much like siblings.

“She had been processing the loss of my dad, who is her first cousin, and I know that was really hard on her,” said Anderson. “Then just the circumstances and the details surrounding her death are just enough to make you sick.”

Anderson said that from what she understands the ex-boyfriend is a person of interest, but no charges have been made.

Mexican journalist Hector Aldrete originally published the story about Vardabasso’s death in the online news outlet El Periodico Del Frente, but CityNews Calgary has reported that the initial news story has since been taken down as Mexican authorities said it would impede the investigation.

“We just want to have people talk about it and raise some awareness because there’s that fear that it’s going to go cold,” she said.

“She had a really great community there and she had built some really good friendships but that doesn’t mean anything if the authorities down there aren’t going to take it seriously.”

Vardabasso attended Prince George Secondary School and after graduation moved to Edmonton and then Calgary, where her ex-husband and son now reside.

Anderson said she lived with Vardabasso for a time in Calgary, which she remembers fondly.

“She was one of the most sincere people in the world,” she said. “I feel like no matter who you were, or what your relationship with her was, she made you feel like the most important person in the room when she was talking to you. Like she was just so genuine.”

Anderson said Vardabasso is someone that her whole family will miss dearly.

“The fact that her life was taken from her, and someone actively sought her out. The fact that it could potentially be domestic abuse… and I feel like that is something really prevalent that we deal with that people don’t talk about,” said Anderson.

“It makes me sick to think about how she went out.

There needs to be some justice in regards to that. Like maybe if we started talking about it, we place some pressure on the right people to take action,” she said.

“We just can’t let a life with such a great legacy – we can’t let her light go out.”

Four Rivers Co-op buys Spruce Capital Feeds TED CLARKE Citizen staff

When you think of Prince George landmarks – Mr. PG, the Nechako River cutbanks, the CN Rail Bridge there’s one other that has stood the test of time.

It’s the horse in the sky at Spruce Capital Feeds.

For the better part of 50 years, it has been drawing customers to the store where they can buy livestock feed, tack equipment, farm fencing, seeds, fertilizers, pet food, jewelry, workwear, Western wear and cowboy boots.

Aside from a few new product lines, what they sell won’t change now the store has been purchased by Four Rivers Co-op, and the horse that stands high atop a pole at the front of the store is not going anywhere.

“Yes, we are committed to keeping the horse in the sky,” said Four Rivers Co-operative CEO Allan Bieganski.

“Everybody knows where it is. We’re going to have the same great staff, same great selection, same great pricing, the only thing that changes is it’ll be owned by Four Rivers Co-op.”

Greg Parker, who currently owns the store in partnership with his wife Velma and Harold Giesbrecht, says the horse likely dates back to the early days of Spruce Capital Feeds, which was started by the Short family.

Over the years, Mueller moved from the bicycle department to the sporting goods department and then moved over to the hardware side of the store for more than 20 years, eventually becoming manager.

“In the hardware department I got to help people out with their plumbing supplies and electrical,” Mueller said.

“Plumbing is a real challenge for a lot of customers so they would come and see me for my expertise and it was great to see a big smile on their face when they got the right product and knowledge.”

During his off time in the last eight years, Mueller has been piloting the blimp during Prince George Cougars games.

“One of my hobbies is flying RC (remote control) airplanes and the blimp is an RC aircraft and my team loves to fly low during pre-game to visit all the young people,” he said. “I really enjoy working with the Cougars in that department.”

Mueller has no plans to leave the city.

“My time here at Central Builders’ has

been unique and even an old fella like myself has learned a few things,” Mueller said. “I learned about lumber sales and concrete supplies, and I always liked to serve the customers here. My time here has been wonderful and I hope the young people I have trained here keep passing those customer service skills to others along the way.”

Mueller said he’s looking forward to still seeing his customers out and about in the community.

“In retirement, my wife has a honey-do list for me so we will work together on that and we’ll be going on different adventures as well,” he said. “We’ll be visiting our kids more often.”

Mueller and wife, Linda, have two adult children who live in Vancouver.

“We’ll also be doing some travelling as we visit friends across Canada,” Mueller said. “And we have a cabin out at Summit Lake so we’ll probably spend more time there in the summer. So Peter won’t be bored.”

The Parkers will stay on as managers of the store, which has 14 employees, all of whom have agreed to job offers from the new owners.

Regional district names new CAO HANNA PETERSEN Citizen staff

Chris Calder is the new chief administrative officer for the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George.

He will assume the role from Jim Martin, who is retiring at the end of the year. Calder is the current general manager of finance with the regional district, a position he’s held since June of 2018.

Prior to joining the regional district, Calder worked for the Prince George office of KPMG. “We are delighted to work with Chris in this new capacity,” regional district board chair Lara Beckett said

in a release. “Over the past five and a half years, Chris has demonstrated strong leadership and an exceptional understanding of the financial challenges facing the Regional District. We look forward to working with him and we know there is a strong team supporting him as he transitions into this new role.”

“I look forward to working closely with the board, staff and communities to implement the regional district’s strategic priorities,” he said.

As CAO, Calder will be responsible for all aspects of regional district operations, including overseeing a staff of nearly 100, and the provision of more than 90 different local government services within the regional district.

RCMP Street Crew unit reporting busy year HANNA PETERSEN Citizen staff

Prince George RCMP has released yearly data from the activities of the Street Crew unit in 2023.

Police report that over the course of 2023, the Street Crew unit removed over nine kilograms of methamphetamine, two kilograms of fentanyl and two kilograms of cocaine, as well as firearms, body armour, nearly $100,000 in cash, and several vehicles from the streets of Prince George.

One investigation led the team to take enforcement action against a Lower

Mainland crime group, active in the B.C. gang conflict, effectively suppressing an illicit drug supply line coming into Prince George.

Charges have been forwarded against nine major drug targets, as well as dozens of lower level targets, which police believe will lead to significant sentences if successful.

Seven of the nine major drug targets had significant ties to the B.C. gang conflict, including several individuals from the Lower Mainland that were believed to be establishing drug lines in Prince George.

A common trend being observed is the

usage of short-term rental units to set up drug operations and police encourage the proprietors of short-term rentals to be vigilant.

The Street Crew unit also proactively targets individuals involved in auto theft and property crime.

In 2023, over $1,500,000 in stolen goods was recovered and returned to their owners.

This includes cars, trucks, ATVs, electronics, and a wake boat.

Several prolific offenders have been arrested by the team and investigations forwarded to the courts.

The Street Crew unit is comprised of

plain clothes police officers specializing in covert policing, who are tasked with disrupting criminality through proactive and targeted enforcement.

The team mandate encompasses drug trafficking, property crime and prolific violent offenders in the Prince George area, as well as the development of criminal intelligence.

Ness Lake polar bear dip goes New Year’s Day CHRISTINE DALGLEISH Citizen staff

The 23rd annual Ness Lake Bible Camp Polar Bear Dip will see participants take the frozen plunge into the water as a fundraiser that helps send kids to summer camp.

The dip takes place January 1 and starts off on dry land at 1:30 p.m. where prizes are won for most money raised and best costumes.

“This fundraiser is an epic event,” Dayna Penson, event organizer, said.

“Something super unique to the north.”

In the event’s 23-year history, more than $190,000 has been raised for children in need.

The adventure begins at 1:45 and goes until 3 p.m. After taking the plunge, participants can grab a free hot chocolate and a cinnamon bun.

All funds raised at this event go directly to the Camper Sponsorship Fund.

Contractors recognized for regional highway work TED CLARKE Citizen staff

The provincial government recognizes the efforts of local contractors to keep people and goods on the move and earlier this month released its choices for B.C. Contractor of the Year awards to celebrate achievements in construction, road/bridge maintenance, safety and community service.

Following are the award winners: Community Service Yellowhead Road & Bridge Ltd. (Vanderhoof) partnered with the nonprofit Murray Ridge Ski Area to provide

road maintenance, snow removal and parking-lot care to ensure safe travel for students on ski days, saving the ski club thousands of dollars each season while also making skiing more affordable for people in the community.

Yellowhead also partnered with the Stellat’en First Nation on the Stella Road pedestrian walkway project, donating materials, equipment and more than 550 person hours. The one-kilometre path separates pedestrians from traffic and enjoys widespread community use, including people who use wheelchairs.

Paving Dawson Construction Limited

resurfaced more than 54 kilometres of Highway 97 at Hixon, south of Prince George, using 15 per cent recycled-asphalt pavement to create a smoother and sustainable road. The company also helped manage traffic during the wildfire season and completed the project ahead of schedule and within budget.

Bridges and Structures Gitga’at Park Derochie Industrial Services Inc. rehabilitation of the Old Skeena Bridge near Terrace. The project preserved the circa 1925 bridge’s historical significance. The company added a second shift and finished the work four months ahead of schedule.

Grading Thompson Brothers Construction completed the Highway 29 Lynx Creek bridge replacement and highway-realignment project north of Chetwynd, required after the flood of November 2022.

The project included a large highway-embankment fill, 150 metre bridge and a 280 m causeway to cross Lynx Creek.

The company moved more than two million cubic metres of material to extend a stability berm, provide embankment-wave protection and adapted final grading despite the challenges of wildfire evacuations.

Time to get ruthless with toxic drug traffickers

T

he ongoing toxic drug crisis and the massive death toll seen in Prince George and across Canada is a public health issue but that doesn’t mean the lawyers and the politicians have nothing to contribute.

The opportunity for decisive federal government action came Tuesday when an Ontario man was charged with 14 counts of second-degree murder for selling lethal substances to people who later took their own lives.

What exactly is the difference between the sodium nitrite Kenneth Law is accused of selling, sometimes to minors according to police, and the men and women trafficking enough fentanyl and other tainted and toxic drugs to kill dozens or hundreds of people?

A law degree is not required to realize the answer is nothing at all.

In both cases, the buyers are vulnerable individuals and their plans with the drugs are irrelevant. Their

problems with addiction and/or mental health are being exploited by the seller for monetary gain.

The type of drug cocktail the seller is offering is also irrelevant. If it is sold in a quantity that kills, that should come with a second-degree murder charge, with the number of counts dictated by the number of people that could die from the amount being trafficked.

Furthermore, the federal government could reverse the onus on a convicted fentanyl trafficker charged with second-degree murder. That would make it up to the trafficker to prove no one would have died from the quantity of fentanyl being sold, rather than police and Crown lawyers having to build a case that someone did, in fact, die from the fentanyl that was sold by that trafficker.

And why stop there? A convicted second-degree murderer for fentanyl trafficking that fails to demonstrate remorse and that they have used their time in prison to

turn their lives around is not only ineligible for parole but is given the dangerous offender designation and the indefinite incarceration that comes with it.

If this sounds like the government giving itself excessive legal power, who would be hurt? Law-abiding citizens, addicts trapped in their illness, or drug traffickers who don’t care how many people they hurt and kill selling their poison, so long as they get paid?

Government should keep safe supply and harm reduction policies in place to help and support people suffering under the disease of addiction.

That is the compassionate thing to do.

But when it comes to treating the cancer on society that the traffickers of toxic drugs are, government shouldn’t hesitate locking these people up for many years to protect all citizens.

That is the just thing to do.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR NATUROPATHS READY TO HELP With 30 years practice experience in Prince George, I’d like to comment on your recent article regarding naturopathic medicine, the provincial drug toxicity crisis and the benefit that naturopathic medicine can offer to vulnerable populations such as those with opioid use disorder.

Given the nearly 700 naturopathic doctors in B.C. who can prescribe and serve their patients on a daily basis throughout BC in a primary care role, this approach, in my opinion, should be used not only for those suffering with opioid or alcohol use disorder but as a model of care during the current primary care crisis.

While “harm reduction” does offer some benefit by

E-mail: letters@pgcitizen.ca using “clean drugs”, there are many other things that should be considered to help people struggling with these diagnoses including lifestyle counselling , botanical medicines (which has been used for hundreds of years), nutritional support, and psychological therapy to address past traumas, to name a few. Naturopathic medicine offers a very comprehensive, evidence-based medical approach that works as both a primary therapy or as adjunctive therapy, depending on the needs of each individual patient. Using “drug therapy” in isolation will never solve the underlining cause of these illnesses.

The time has come for naturopathic medicine to be fully embraced by the ministries of Health, Mental Health and Addictions and the Provincial Health Officer to include naturopathic therapies and principles in a

more meaningful way for both the treatment of opioid use disorder but to also include naturopathic physicians as a viable option during the current severe shortage of family doctors in this province and in particular northern BC. We do not need to bring in doctors and nurses from other countries. We need to better utilize the medical professionals already living in BC. This includes naturopathic physicians but also the approximately 10,000 health care professionals who lost their jobs by standing up for their constitutional rights and yours, and their personal choice to accept or reject a medical procedure.

This is another story that needs to be told!

Attack on mayor’s expenses unwarranted

D

on’t let your misgivings about a politician justify unfair treatment in the news media.

Last week, our local CBC outfit took a run at Mayor Simon Yu. It was a rare investigative piece that highlighted a lot of missed opportunities.

Why not a story on Coun. Cori Ramsay who spent $1,539 of our money on hotels plus an unknown amount on airfare this past June in Ottawa for the Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference?

I’m sure there’s an argument this was for city business and not just something she would put to work enhancing her personal brand and re-election campaign material. But it’s hard to see.

Or what about the city winning the nation’s code of silence award? Is the systemic corruption of our cherished institutions and bureaucracies something the CBC, as a rule, doesn’t cover, for fear of besmirching the credibility of their

fellow public sector employees?

Instead, they suddenly targeted our inexperienced, vulnerable, and politically isolated mayor.

It was a good yarn. I applauded the reporting at first, shocked Yu would stay at a $759 hotel room. A luxury suite.

This number obviously drove the story.

Charging “$759 to stay overnight at Ottawa’s Château Laurier is certainly a choice,” quipped CBC reporter Justin McElroy to his large audience.

But that $759 was for two nights, not one, a key detail that would have undermined the narrative. (The CBC has since quietly corrected its story).

So really he stayed at a $380 hotel, when the Canadian Senate invited Yu, a Chinese-Canadian, to a solemn and symbolic Ottawa commemoration of the shameful time in our history when we discriminated against Chinese immigrants.

If Ramsay’s Ottawa junkets aren’t

stories, neither is this one.

As for the rest of Yu’s expenses, they should be lower, but according to the CBC’s own chart, he spent around $2,500 more than the $20,000 the mayors of Kelowna and Nanaimo spent last year.

Is that $2,500 difference, ignoring the $4,000 he saved not renovating his office, a good enough reason for a national scandal? And if so, why wasn’t the $30,000 the Mayor of Nanaimo spent in 2018 a national headline?

I’m not saying we don’t criticize these expenses. I’m saying the CBC’s focus makes no sense.

Yu’s $242 stay at the Treasure Cove Casino is also a bit overstated. Sure, he could have went home for the night, but minus the cost of the cab ride home and back for his morning meeting, that mistake cost us probably $160.

That’s not much meat for a political feeding frenzy, either. And if the story is

a dud to begin with, you can’t really go after how he screwed up his response.

The reality of the situation is voters propelled an unwelcome outsider into the heart of City Hall, a broken, secretive institution that longs for a return to the halcyon days of Lyn Hall when administration and council held hands in a functional but frivolous union of incompetence and waste.

Remember those days?

Probably not if the CBC was your source of news. They barely covered it.

Whether or not Mayor Yu is worthy of re-election remains to be seen.

The question right now is whether our local CBC is aware of the deepening institutional rot in our society, or if they are simply another part of it, pulling out the knives only when those rotten institutions stand to benefit, and remaining silent when they don’t.

Fixing a first-world problem breakthrough of 2023

A

s we approach the end of each year, for whatever reason, we start to see articles about the year just past.

Even science journals are not immune to top ten lists and highlight articles.

Indeed, Science is one of the most prestigious journals in the world and every year they run a feature on the “Breakthrough of the Year.”

They declared the family of weight loss drugs this year’s most important breakthrough.

As the article points out, obesity is a public health crisis. Chronic obesity can lead to Type 2 diabetes, heart disease,

arthritis, fatty liver disease, and some cancers. In the United States, 70 percent of adults are considered overweight. In Europe, more than 50 percent struggle with excess weight. In Canada, approximately 65 percent have weight issues.

Individuals have tried many different approaches, from diets and surgery to a wide variety of pills such as amphetamines and diuretics, with little success.

The most recent fad was fen-phen, which held promise until long-term use was shown to trigger catastrophic heart and lung conditions. Weight loss drugs seemed doomed to failure due to their side effects.

But a new class of drugs has hit the market. It mimics a gut hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1).

This is not an overnight story or even really just a 2023 story. Researchers discovered GLP-1 in the early 1980s and gradually worked out its biochemistry. It modifies blood sugar and was pursued as a possible control for diabetes.

In the 1990s, it was discovered that injecting GLP-1 into the brains of rat made them eat less. Of course, humans aren’t rats, but a study of 20 healthy young men found intravenous injections had a similar impact on their appetite. Various derivatives, such as a similar peptide from the

The drugs didn’t really catch fire until two years ago, when Novo Nordisk’s next iteration, semaglutide, was introduced to the market as Ozempic for diabetes and Wegovy for weight control. And while two percent of the population is now using these compounds, researchers continue to search for iterations which have fewer side effects and better results.

The 2023 breakthrough of the year – drugs to treat what is predominantly a first-world problem.

WHAT ABOUT SNOW REMOVAL?

Earlier this month, I needed to go shopping at Save-OnFoods, which is across the road from the apartment that I live in.

The sidewalk was cleared of snow and West Austin Road was cleared of snow but for anyone walking, or

for me having to shop using my handy walker, how on earth am I supposed to get my walker and myself across at least a two feet wide bank of snow at least three feet deep?

My option was I had to walk, with my walker on the side of the road, and thankfully I wear a high visible vest.

Can our City of Prince George do something better?

Would I get a ticket from the RCMP for walking along the roadside? I hope not.

Lheidli T’enneh chief reflects on successful year HANNA PETERSEN Citizen staff

It’s been another busy year for Lheidli T’enneh First Nation as it has been busy forming partnerships with businesses, industry and breaking ground on a new daycare.

Chief Dolleen Logan said that aside from forming partnerships the one thing that really excited her this year was starting work on the new daycare facility at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park beside Exploration Place.

The construction work began this July and the building is finally taking shape.

“It’s going to be amazing once it’s finished. Because we need a daycare and it’s a beautiful location. It’s going to be 24 hours, so the first one of its kind for all the shift workers,” said Logan.

The new facility will include space for 24 infants and toddlers, 25 for children aged three years to kindergarten and 26 for schoolaged children.

and land-based learning.

Logan said it’s been a challenge because there’s been a lot of paperwork, meetings and it’s been a slow process to even break ground on the building.

However she said the building is coming along and if everything goes as planned, the project should be completed in fall 2024.

“It’s going to be a very welcoming, calming place.”

Lheidli T’enneh has also been involved with two big hydrogen projects, supporting Hydra Energy’s hydrogen refueling station, which is slated to become operational in 2024, and forming a partnership with Australian company Fortescue, who is proposing to build a green hydrogen plant in Prince George.

“The two big projects are not only green, but it’ll bring bring jobs for members and non-members, for everyone

in the communities,” said Logan. “We are slowly going green, everyone in the world, I think all of Canada and around the world are trying to get to net zero.

We’re starting.”

She said Lheidli T’enneh are stewards of the land and they have to take care of the territory.

“It is time for the world to step up and head towards going green so we have this world to hand down to generations and generations and generations. This is exciting for us.”

This summer Logan was also reelected, making history once again. When she was elected in 2021 she was the first female chief elected since 1969. The first was Mary Pius, and now Logan is the first female chief to be re-elected in the nation’s history.

“I still get nervous when I think about the reelection,” said Logan.

“It was history making. I didn’t realize it until after it was brought to my attention that I was the first female chief to be re-elected in Lheidli T’enneh history. It’s been exciting and I get a lot of congratulations still.”

Reflecting on his first year in office, Mayor Simon Yu admitted the mayor’s job came with a steep learning curve and with a huge sacrifice on family time.

“Because I was not involved on the city council before, I needed to know the working style of the councillors, on top of trying to learn the procedurals and all the legal aspect of the mayor’s duty,” he explained.

“During the campaign is one thing, you will you try to understand the politics and to try to understand the issue as an outsider. But once you’re inside, you try to dissect all the issues in detail and it’s a little bit more complicated than I thought.”

He said a lot of the problems facing Prince George need to be coordinated between multiple levels of government and First Nations, which takes time.

“It is a process. It is consensus building,” he said.

“These are the things that I knew I had to do but I did not know the extent of the time that had to be devoted before getting any file moving along in the direction that I think citizens expect of me.”

Yu said his two biggest moments as mayor so far was

signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the province for homelessness supports called Heart to Hearth and advocating for Prince George issues at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Vancouver.

However, following the signing of the MOU the city closed down the Millennium Park encampment, which was met with criticism from both local advocacy groups and housing minister Ravi Kahlon urging council to reconsider its choice.

“Closing down the park, fundamentally, is a safety issue,” said Yu, adding they made a tough decision as a council. “If I look back perhaps we should have had a much, much better advanced consultation with the First Nations, with Carrier Sekani and with the people that were directly affected down there.”

He said the city needs to find a proper structure to deal with encampments but added there is a two-way dialogue between the city and the province to address every single piece of these issues.

“So, can we solve the problem? In a short one-year time, I was relatively naive, I saw, you know, I can make huge strides within one year. But it looks like it’s going to take a few years to even put a structure around it.”

He said they need to work more diligently to address

the long term health of downtown.

“It’s difficult, no question because I have to balance the interests of downtown, the city interests, as well as the interests of all the citizens, I repeat all citizens in Prince George. I do not want this community to be divided to become a you versus me. You versus us.”

Yu said he is confident in the growth of the Prince George economy, especially with the burgeoning energy industry alongside the forest sector.

“Prince George is geographically too important,” he said. “We are halfway between Asia and America. We are right in the middle. I cannot see a better place for future development while we adjust to climate change. Prince George is going to be important for the province, for Canada and for the world.”

In September, Australian company Fortescue announced its intention to establish a major green energy hub in the city and last year Hydra Energy broke ground on its hydrogen refuelling station on Sinitch Road, which will be operational in early 2024.

“To that I’m still very much confident and that has not changed because of my first year in the office. As a matter of fact, my confidence in Prince George has strengthened because of it.”

Couple marks 20 years after right-to-marry case HANNA PETERSEN Citizen staff

Prince George couple Tess Healy and Wendy Young celebrated a significant milestone this year.

Not only was 2023 their 20th wedding anniversary, but it marks 20 years since they became one of the eight British Columbia couples who pursued the same sex-marriage lawsuit that went to the Supreme Court and won in 2003.

This lawsuit also paved the way for the national legalization of same-sex marriage in 2005.

Their love story Healy and Young’s love story started when they met at a Prince George Cougars hockey game. However, Young was in another relationship at the time so the two wouldn’t really connect until a few weeks later when Young and her then-girlfriend had broken up.

“We ended up talking over the phone and over email and I felt okay about that and then there was going to be a dance and I said well maybe you’ll have a dance with me at the gay dance?” said Healy.

After the dance, they started seriously dating and despite some friends taking bets that they wouldn’t make it they moved in together about a year later.

They bought the house that they would end up living in together for the next 23 years.

In 2001, they decided to have a commitment ceremony because at the time gay and lesbian couples couldn’t get married.

“We wanted to have that public affirmation of community and family gathering to witness our union,” said Healy.

At the same time, Gala, a Prince George LGBTQ organization, asked Healy and Young if they wanted to be one of the couples from across the country to be part of a human rights case on same-sex marriage rights.

They had to write essays and were even interviewed for the case on the night of their commitment ceremony, which they held in their backyard with over 100 guests in attendance.

“Those essays we wrote became affidavits. We had to go down and try and get a marriage certificate and be turned down and that was the basis for the case,” explained Young.

“Two years later we won and we hadn’t expected to win that quickly. We thought this would be five to seven years.”

At the time, Stephen Harper was running for Prime Minister and Healy said there were a lot of conservative rumblings about rolling back the case so they decided to get legally married before they had the opportunity to take it back.

“We were the parade marshals for the pride parade that year and we said ‘well, how do you feel about us getting married in the park? As part of the festivities?’” said Young.

The Pride Parade ended at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park and that is where they got married.

One of the drag queens serenaded them and Peter Zimmer, who was the pastor at the St. Michael and All Angels’ Anglican Church in Prince George at the time, officiated.

“He actually said, ‘I’ve been asked here to do the blessing and what I’m here to say is, this is your blessing’ and he pointed to all of the people in the crowd, which brought cheers and applause,” said Healy.

Zimmer also officiated their 20-year vow renewal ceremony, which they celebrated this past August.

20 years of legal marriage “I can’t believe it’s been 20 years of legal marriage,” said Healy. “The big thing is that there are young gays, lesbians, trans queer youth growing up, who’ve never known Canada differently.”

Healy and Young said they were surprised at how quickly the culture changed to accept same-sex marriage.

“I thought at some point, you will have gay and lesbian weddings and there will be people who will be happy,” said Healy.

“Maybe their favourite uncle is marrying his boyfriend. But I thought that wouldn’t be in my lifetime. I thought it would be a generation or two before that would happen and it was very quick.”

Healy and Young said they realized it was important to be visible as a healthy, happy lesbian couple which opened up opportunities to make change happen.

They reflected on two significant moments that happened to each of them in the span of 10 days.

Young said she was on a flight and one of the flight attendants recognized her from the media coverage of the case and thanked her because her niece had come out to the family by showing them a newspaper article of Wendy and Tess and said, “this is me.”

At the same time, Healy was facilitating a workshop when a woman came up to her at the break and said that her daughter had been having suicidal thoughts.

The daughter had taken the front page of the newspaper with Healy and Young’s article to her mother to explain why she was struggling.

“Now she is happy and healthy and her mom knew that she was going to be able to keep her kid alive instead of having to organize a funeral,” said Healy.

Rise in homophobia Healy said she feels like every generation has its battles and same-sex marriage was the battle of her generation but for the next generation it’s transphobia.

In September of this year, Healy was speaking at a Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) education gathering when an anti-SOGI protester with a sign stood in front of her shouting his viewpoints.

However, people in the crowd converged on Healy to form a protective shield using their pro-SOGI signs and a rainbow-coloured umbrella to block out the man’s sign.

“I’ve been having sort of these feelings of fear that I haven’t had for decades,” said Healy, with Young adding “There’s a nastiness that’s crept in.”

Healy said she had been nervous to speak at the protest because she was fearful that something would happen.

“What happened at that protest, we walked away all of us feeling closer and unified and we conquered something together. It was the most amazing feeling,” she said.

“I hate that we’re having to be here again. But we’re here again and we will do what we did the first time around, which is be strong and be proud.”

Healy reflected that when they decided to join the court case they joked that they could be a footnote in history but didn’t really recognize the significance of it because they were busy living their lives.

“We were lucky when we found each other and I think we’ve got a really good life,” she said.

“It’s gone by really fast and I do think that same-sex marriage case, in a way, becomes a bookend to measure the changes that have come by since. I think that’s a big thing for me.”

Should old acquaintance be forgot: In memory TED CLARKE Citizen staff

In 2023, we said our final goodbyes to people who made Prince George a better place to live.

Here are some of those whose lives made a difference and why we will remember them.

Ken Goss, 72 Growing up in Prince George playing lacrosse, hockey and baseball, Goss was fast on his feet and tough as nails and he took his athleticism and love for sports to the golf course. After 18 years as a plumber/pipefitter, he got into the house selling/buying business and became one of the city’s most successful and innovative real estate agents, earning him a place in the Re/Max Hall of Fame.

He was first among local real estate sellers to put his personal phone number on a For Sale sign, first to use a cell phone for his work and first to wrap his truck in advertising decals to promote his business.

Judy Feyer, 81 She was only a year old when her dad moved the family from Wadena, Sask., to Prince George and as a logger/ truck driver he taught Judy how to drive a logging truck at age 14. He also passed on his love for music, which would later serve her well as part of the BC Old Time Fiddlers Association.

Judy and her late husband Stuart (who died in 2006) were known for giving back to the community as volunteer organizers and for many years they contributed to the Sons of Norway, a group that preserves Norwegian heritage, culture and tradition. At age 70, Judy started her community radio career when she got behind the mic at CFIS FM 93.1 and her dedication resulted in her selection as Prince George Community Radio Society Volunteer of the Year in 2017.

She once told longtime city historian Kathy Nadalin and former Citizen columnist, “Volunteers are not paid – not because they are worthless but because they are priceless.”

Barb Dean, 76 Anybody who spent any time in the children’s book section of the Prince George Public Library’s downtown branch will remember Dean’s passion for her job turning kids on to books. She worked there for more than 30 years and her willingness to promote reading as a path to learning was represented throughout her work greeting kids and their families at the library. She participated in local book talks and travelled to conferences in several North American cities. As a children’s book advocate she relished her role as an educator, visiting kids in schools, and passed on that love for books geared to children and young adults to her grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Kris Yip, 47 A true sportsman and gentleman, Yip never boasted about his own accomplishments even though he had a lot to brag about. From a young age he excelled at

every sport he tried, from skating to skiing to climbing to cycling and it was his bike that he gained national attention. Despite the challenges of coming from a cold northern climate, in 1993 Yip went on to become junior national champion in the criterium and road racing events. During the pandemic he qualified to ride for Canada in the UCI Esports world championships and his virtual riding helped pave the way to a top-10 finish for one of his teammates. The birth of his sons prompted a career switch from aerial mapping in 2008 and he worked as an insurance agent and mutual funds advisor.

His untimely death came during an indoor training ride at his Prince George home.

Johnny Sung Chung Wong, 86 After arriving from China in 1954, Wong established his reputation as an exceptional cook working in several major hotels and restaurants. As owner of the Connaught Inn restaurant, he was known for offering large generous portions and it became THE place to go for prime rib and roast dinners.

He met his wife Kay in 1956 and they became the first Chinese couple married in Prince George. Prominent in the community as part of the Prince George Chinese Preservation Society, Dart Coon Club, the Chinese Benevolent Association and Chinese Freemasons Society, Johnny’s volunteer efforts to preserve the culture of his birthplace was instrumental in helping newcomers get established in the city. A city resident for nearly 70 years, he took an active role in organizing food booths set up for the Prince George Exhibition and Canada Day

activities and took pride in training Lion Dance performers for New Year’s celebrations.

Mike Church, 87 When Mike Church put his mind to work designing Aberdeen Glen Golf Course in the hills and valleys of a Prince George forest, he envisioned a championship-calibre course with heavily-treed fairways and plenty of elevation changes – a golf course like no other in the city which would challenge everyone but exclude no one.

Church’s work as a successful logger, gold miner and heavy-equipment operator took him to exotic locations around the world where he attended golf schools to learn the game.

He took the time to pick the brains of golf pros, course superintendents and owners to give him ideas of what features he wanted to bring back to northern B.C. to incorporate into his own course.

A man of few words, he knew enough about moving piles of dirt to create the kind of landscape that would put a smile on a golfer’s face and it took two years for him and his crew of a dozen heavy haulers to turn that parcel of land in the Hart into his 18-hole legacy.

Howard Lloyd, 92 Lloyd served as a city councillor and regional district director for Prince George from 1972-75 and was the Social Credit MLA for the Fort George riding from 197579. A native of Turtleford, Sask., Lloyd was 10 when he and his family moved to Prince George. He started his working career in sawmills, then built roads and skidded logs for a time, then went into business with his brothers to form the Lloyd Bros Lumber Company and in 1960 started Howard Lloyd Logging.

When the logging industry became too challenging to make a go of it, Lloyd turned to politics for a brief time, and finally settled into farming in the Beaverly area until he retired in the 1990s.

Harold Dornbierer, 92 Harold was second in line in the ‘Dornbierer Dynasty’ that started when his father August was appointed to the department’s top position in 1942. He took over the job from his father in 1967 to become the city’s fourth fire chief and held the job until 1985. Harold’s brother Mike also served as chief from 1992-99.

Harold was a prominent figure in the community throughout his 35-year career with the city firefighting force and was deeply committed to serving the citizens of Prince George.

Rob Buchanan, 90 Known for his love of the outdoors and adventurous spirit, Buchanan made a name for himself as a competitive marathon paddler who won the Simon Fraser Canoe Races multiple times and went on to race on rivers all over North America.

The Prince George Sports Hall of Fame member was also a competitive curler who won the coveted Kelly Cup men’s title in the ‘50s.

He was one of the founders of Buchanan Benson Real Estate and Insurance during the boom years of Prince George when the city’s pulp mills were built in the mid-‘60s and he was one of the partners that developed Purden Ski Village in 1968.

Kum Duk (Kay) Lim, 89 Born and raised in Korea, Kay came to Prince George with her husband Chong in 1964 and she established herself as one of the city’s premier vocal teachers and was well-known to the music and cultural community.

Kay was a fundamental member of community choirs and was a founding member of the Prince George Cantata singers.

Chong, who died less than a year before his wife, established the radiology department at Prince George Regional Hospital as director and together their generosity and commitment to the city lives on through the CNC scholarship fund and their donations to the Prince George Community Foundation.

Doug French, 80 Doug joined the Citizen in 1963 and worked his way up the company ladder to become display advertising manager. He worked for the newspaper for 27 years before he retired at age 50. During that time he gained a reputation as a kind and considerate boss who treated everyone with fairness and respect. He and his wife Delores were well-known for putting on memorable Christmas parties at their Prince George home.

Florence Schultz, 77 Until she succumbed to cancer, Schultz suffered a lifetime of trauma, brain injury and a multitude of health issues, but didn’t dwell on the negative and did everything she could to help the most vulnerable people in our community. As friend and colleague Diane Nakamura put it in a tribute article, “I will never meet anyone who will come remotely close to Florence’s tenacity, courage and integrity.”

As a member of Uniting Northern Drug Users (UNDU) she spread her shared her unwavering compassion and wisdom with many unhoused individuals suffering generational trauma, addictions, mental health and poverty.

A devout Christian, the streets of downtown Prince George became the church that allowed her to fulfill her mission.

Roy Nagel, 81 A former managing editor of the Citizen, Nagel started out as an aspiring lawyer in Saskatchewan but decided he didn’t want to spend his life defending clients and telling just one side of the story.

He became a newspaper reporter in Moose Jaw and Saskatoon before moving on to a management position with the Winnipeg Tribune, where he learned the fine art of presenting facts and opinions to the community without stepping on too many toes.

He joined the Citizen news team in 1980 and delivered the daily news until 1997 when he became general

manager of the Central Interior Logging Association, where he used his negotiating skills to fight for better worker safety and represent independent contractors who previously felt powerless taking on governments, regulatory agencies and lumber giants.

Viola Merritt, 99 Vi met the love of her life, Lloyd Merritt, after she moved with her family from Alberta to Vancouver, and they were married in 1946.

Three years later the young couple moved to Giscome, where Lloyd worked as a carpenter and in 1953 they opened Lloyd’s Drive Inn restaurant which they operated for 16 years. Vi and Lloyd worked side-by-side in every endeavor: restaurant, house construction, equal partners in life until that partnership was broken with Lloyd’s passing in 2009. They are now reunited once again.

Orv Claffey, 89 He was a 19 year old living in Radville, Sask., when he saw newspaper ad from the Prince George Lumbermen looking for hockey players and with very little money in his wallet he took them up on their offer and went on to become an effective forward for his new team. The Lumbermen became the Mohawks and Claffey went on to play competitive hockey for 17 years.

Active for 35 years as a hockey referee he also taught young officials to be whistleblowers while continuing to play with the Prince George Rec Hockey Association and Mohawk/Rusty Nut Oldtimers before he hung up his skates after 55 years in the game.

A member of the Prince George Sports Hall of Fame and Canadian Adult Rec Hockey Association Hall of Fame, Claffey was a longtime volunteer timekeeper at Prince George Cougars/Spruce Kings games.

Keith Buchanan, 63 Keith and his wife Michaela were co-owners of Purden Ski Village and Purden Lake Resort campground and RV park. His uncle, Rob Buchanan, was one of the original owners of the ski hill and Keith started out operating the chair lifts and gradually learned how to fix every piece of equipment needed to keep Purden open for skiers and he eventually bought out the other shareholders to take ownership.

He got into flying helicopters as his year-round occupation and gained a reputation as one of the city’s most reliable pilots, a job he held for 40 years until his accidental death on Sept. 29, when he and Jerry Edwards were killed in a helicopter crash shortly after they took off from the base at Purden Lake.

Jerry Edwards, 56 A self-employed forestry silviculture consultant, Edwards started Grizzly Forest Management in Prince George in 1999 and it was his job to survey cutblocks that had been harvested and reforested and compile reports about the health of the newly-forested areas.

“It is a testimony to an employer when your people hang in year after year - he was a kind, generous and very fair boss who put his employees first,” said Carolyn Thorp, who worked with Edwards. “The company was small, but we did good work. Bottom line, though, it was Jerry who put in the time, thought and detail into the quality work that was handed in to the varying forest companies we worked for. I know that the licensees had great respect for Jerry.”

He was flying with four other workers contracted by Canfor when he was killed in a helicopter crash Sept. 29 that also killed pilot Keith Buchanan.

Chris Hopwood, 61 A former manager of the Prince George Real Canadian Superstore, Hopwood worked at the store for nearly three decades, utilizing leadership skills he honed as a former McDonald’s Restaurant manager.

Sports were an integral part of his life and he was a passionate coach, referee and executive with the Prince George Minor Hockey Association and spent years as a volunteer with the College Heights Community Association.

He retired in 2020 which freed his schedule for daily walks, disc golfing, detailing vehicles and devoting more love and time to his family.

Stu Berry, 80 The longtime Prince George Spruce Kings trainer put his competent first-aid skills to work stitching up cuts and taping wounded limbs, but he also understood the mental and emotional side of junior hockey and was a father figure to the boys on the bus, many of whom were away from their homes for the first time.

His day job as audio-visual department manager at the College of New Caledonia offered a flexible schedule that allowed Stu and his wife Diana to travel in their own vehicle to the Kings’ road games, which they rarely missed.

Canine physio clinic helps ailing dogs TED CLARKE Citizen staff

Physiotherapy works for humans to improve strength, endurance and flexibility to reduce pain and restore mobility, so why not try it on dogs?

Marissa DuBois saw the benefits of canine rehabilitation as a veterinary technician working at the Murdoch Veterinary Clinic in Prince George and in June she opened Stretch & Fetch Animal Rehabilitation.

Since then, she and her staff have created a thriving business restoring function to dogs who can barely walk or are unable to move on their own before they begin their treatment.

“Some dogs just need fitness and we condition them so they won’t get hurt, those are more active dogs that you want to take skiing, biking or hiking,” said Du Bois. “We see dogs who have just had surgery and need to rebuild and we see dogs that need surgery but can’t have it because they have other medical conditions and can’t be put under.

“Some dogs we do get them back to 100 per cent again, it just depends on the injury. Some just need quality of life management and they might come every two weeks for the rest of their lives. Some people were on the verge of putting their dog down and now we’re a year past that.

We’re realistic that we can’t fix every problem, but we can manage it and make them more comfortable and happier.”

They also work with cats, provided they don’t mind being handled.

During her 10 years working at the Murdoch clinic DuBois started out as a receptionist and became a registered veterinary technician, then achieved her rehabilitation practitioner certification from the University of Tennessee. She worked for a couple years out of small exam room at the Murdoch clinic until veterinarian Marina Mann got her rehab training and was ready to team up to open the centre.

Staff work with dogs suffering paralysis or who need wheelchairs, prosthetics or braces to move. They use hands-on manipulations and exercises to loosen up stiff joints or eliminate a limp. Staff also provide massage, laser therapy and pulse electromagnetic therapy.

The centre, at 988 Third Ave., has multiple treatment rooms, a full-sized animal gym and an underwater treadmill known as the doggie hot tub.

“Hydrotherapy is a good resistance workout for dogs so it helps them retain their muscle mass as they age and helps them rebuild muscle mass if they’ve lost it due to injury,” said Mann. “It’s great for building fitness in dogs, especially here during the winter months if people aren’t able to exercise them as they would normally in the summer. It’s kind of like a hot tub for them.”

The initial Stretch & Fetch consultation with DuBois and Dr. Mann costs $190 plus tax and the price of each rehab sessions is $75 ($115 if using hydrotherapy). The price is reduced for package sessions.

Therapist takes on running challenge for charity TED CLARKE Citizen staff

Last week marked the start of a lengthy challenge for Carley Billups.

The 43-year-old occupational therapist for School District 57 (Prince George) plans to run 1,000 kilometres in 13 weeks to raise money for the Variety Children’s Charity.

That’s like running all the way from Prince George to Trail in the West Kootenays or Dease Lake near the Yukon Border or to Olympia, the state capital of Washington, south of Seattle.

Her Winter Run Challenge for Northern BC Kids is raising money to pay for medical equipment, specialized therapies and autism assessment services for families in the north.

She plans to run six days a week and will have to average 77 km per week to reach her running goal.

All the money raised here stays in Prince George and Billup’s goal is to raise $5,000. As of Friday afternoon, she’d raised $775 through her Variety Club/Just Giving page.

Billups worked 11 years as a pediatric occupational therapist and has been with the school district for the past year.

She’s seen how families are struggling to pay for

medical appliances such as wheelchairs, specialty strollers, adaptive bikes and bathroom equipment that are not fully funded through the healthcare system.

“These are usually for kids with quite complex needs, like cerebral palsy and brain injury and things like that,” said Billups. “Basically, where medical funding stops and people need other funding, then they can apply through (the Variety Club).”

Billups was more of a cyclist but took up running later in life. She races with the Prince George Roadrunners and she’s hoping a few club members will join her on her runs, especially on weekends when she’s planning a few 20- or 25-km group runs. Her five-year-old standard poodle Rusty is certainly game to go out with her at any time. She’s got cleats for her runners to keep from slipping on ice and snow.

“Most of it will be my regular morning runs, I go all over town,” she said. “I do run all the time and I’ve been slowly increasing my mileage because I wanted to aim for 80 km a week to make sure I have a buffer. There might be a few days when it’s too cold or too much snow or it’s just not safe. It’s kind of crazy how little snow there is right now.”

Tuomas Ukonmaanaho, 79, is the current Canadian record holder for the men’s decathlon for 75-79 yearold-men with a score of 5440 that he set in 2022. Ukonmaanaho has set countless world, Canadian and BC records in his specialties of sprinting 100m and 200m, 4 by 400 m and 4 by 800 m relays, as well as in pole vault.

Currently the superstar athlete ranks No. 1 in Canada in the 100 metres with a time of 14.84 seconds, No. 2 in pole vault with a height of 2.30m and No. 3 in javelin with a throw of 28.24m.

Canadian indoor rankings see Ukon Tom, as the Prince George Track & Field club members call him, ranked No. 2 in the 60 metre with a time of 9:35 seconds, No. 2 in the 400 metres with a time of 1:18.31 and No. 3 in shot put with a throw of 9.17m.

Tara Weber, 34, is the best powerlifter in Canadian history. In her most recent win at the Olympia Super Finals competition in Florida in November, Webber lifted 1,565.27 lbs. in one day during her squat of 705.47 lbs., bench press of 358.24 lbs., and dead lift of 501.56 lbs. She

On the same page is Tina Lamarsh, who started power lifting at 50 and then at 51 broke Canadian records for her age category. She was encouraged to start by her son and now her it’s-never-too-late attitude can spur

everyone into action at any age.

Death racer Larry Malmgren, 62, was looking for a way to get into shape and then as it goes with some motivated people he found what he liked and took it to the extreme. In August, he completed the Canadian Death Race in Grand Cache, Alberta where he ran 118 km that begins and ends on a 4,200-foot plateau passing over three mountain summits that offers a 17,000 foot elevation change. He finished the race in under 20 hours and placed 52 out of 286.

Lauri Karjaluoto, 78, moved to Prince George for the cross country skiing decades ago and continues to be an avid athlete. From the age of 70 to 75 he would ski his age in kilometres on his birthday. Lauri’s message is always that it’s never too late to start something new.

“Just come out and ski,” he advises.

The team of curlers whose combined age is 305 years, beginning with skip Floyd Crowley, who at 84 years old drops to the arena floor and does push ups to warm up. David George is the youngest on the team at 69, Linda Meise is 73 and Hilary Crowley is 79. They are a competitive team that outplayed everyone else in Zone 9 to participate in the 2022 55+ BC Games.

In Nishitokyo, Japan, the hometown of Prince George Spruce Kings forward Kazumo Sasaki, hockey is considered a fringe activity that not many kids play.

“You can’t compare it to what hockey is in North America , it’s a minor sport for sure and that’s why I came here,” said Sasaki. “There’s not such a thing as minor hockey in Tokyo, there’s only the high school league, a couple hundred players.”

That’s out of a Tokyo metropolitan population of 38 million.

Sasaki’s dad played recreational hockey while he was in college and the rink was only three minutes from their home.

Kazumo started skating at a young age and before long was playing with his dad’s team.

Sasaki, who turned 18 on Dec. 24, came to North America four years ago to play academy hockey in Cambridge, Ont. That led to a job last season playing in the North American Hockey League for the Chippewa Steel. He put up 12 goals and 26 points in 54 games and played well

enough to earn a college scholarship next year at Lake Superior State.

“That was a huge step for me and it took a little long to get used to it but I finished the year strong so it was a good experience for me,” said Sasaki.

“It’s been awesome, I like everything here, we have a great group of guys and off the ice I have great billets and

teammates, ”said Sasaki. “Before this I was in Cambridge and Eau Claire (Wisconsin) and I’m kind of used to the environment of a small town.”

The BCHL’s decision to pull out of Hockey Canada resulted in a rule change that allows each team two non-North American imports and that also brought Swedish import defenceman Max

Ranstrom to Prince George. Ranstrom is also committed to Lake Superior State, along with Kings forward Rylan Brady.

Ranstrom, who turned 19 on Dec. 21, is getting his first taste of North American life.

“At the beginning it was a little bit tough, the time change, the culture, but the longer time goes the more you get used to it and I like it a lot here, it’s kind of like home,” said the five-foot-10, 195pound Ranstrom. “Compared to Swedish cities, this would be considered a bigger city.”

Hockey is big in Sweden, with an estimated 63,000 minor hockey players out of a population of 10 million and Ranstrom grew up playing the game with his friends in Filipstad, a city of about 11,000.

The biggest adjustment for Ranstrom is the rink size. North American rinks are 15 feet narrower and 10 feet shorter.

“You get to playing at high speed and you can jump on offence more, but at the same time you have more pressure and less time to react, but I like it,” said Ranstrom. “It’s a funner style to play than back home, a lot more quick.”

Artist specializes in beadwork

The Prince George Tapestry Senior Singers are fundraising for travel to Whistler for their first choral music festival since the pandemic began.

The seventh annual fundraising dinner gala is set for Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Columbus Community Centre. The meal starts at 6:30 p.m. and features beef dip, vegetarian lasagna, Caesar salad and vegetable platter with Swiss cream tarts and traditional Milanaise cookies for dessert.

Net proceeds will support the Tapestry Senior Singers’ April 2024 trip to Cantando Whistler Music Festival. Tickets are $50 each, which makes a night out a lovely holiday gift idea.

Gitxsan artist Carrie Davis of Prince George creates wearable art.

Her intricate beadwork is her newly learned skill, which she has embraced with great enthusiasm.

Shalane Pauls, of the Tahltan nation, got Davis started.

“We grew up together and she sat with me and I told her I wanted to make a pair of earrings,” Davis said.

“Our first session was six hours and she would not touch my needle, she would not touch my beads, she guided me with her words and I sat in her kitchen and finished my first pair of earrings,” Davis recalled.

“The next day I went back, we made another pair and then she told me to bead every single day for two hours until I was comfortable with whatever pattern that I was doing and I did that for a year,” Davis said.

She’s been beading for about two years now.

“I don’t bead nearly as often but when I do I always challenge myself to learn a new technique,” Davis said.

“Beading for me has really been about reclamation and exploring my culture. It’s about visibility and allyship.

Indigenous beadwork is not just for Indigenous people, it is for our allies to be part of our reclamation and reconciliation.”

When creating her artwork, Davis will access other Indigenous artists’ supplies if she can’t use or harvest her own, she said.

The backing on some of her earrings come from a Haida artist and her wooden stands she hangs her jewelry from come from an artist in Alberta.

“My brother is a hunter and he brought me antlers and I sat with a friend who owns a saw and we learned how to saw antlers together,” Davis explained. “It’s been a learning process. Beading is definitely endless and the more I learn, the more I touch animals and use hides and furs, bones, shells and quills – I use them all and I feel connected to them and the more I bead the more I learn about myself and the more I can teach my children.”

Davis has lived in Prince George for the last 14 years.

who are at risk of having their children removed from their care,” Davis said. “So I advocate for reunification and keeping those kids at home. And I raise my own four kids and I bead.”

Davis is a member of the Gitxsan Wolf Clan, born and raised in Prince Rupert.

“I’m a hybrid kind of Indian,” Davis laughed. “My maternal grandmother is from Kitimaat village, grandfather from Fort Simpson, BC, mom Gitxsan, maternal grandfather is from Switzerland – so I have quite a blend of culture and background.”

When Davis beads, she puts a little bit of herself into each piece of artwork and it’s very personal, she said.

“The messages in the beadwork are creator driven, they are spiritual and I really have to pay attention to what thoughts are coming to me as I am doing my beadwork,” Davis added. “I feel that everything carries an energy within itself, so I encourage people to touch my work. It should feel good in your hand. Transferring positive energy is what it’s all about.”

Coldsnap 2024 will feature two late-night Prince George shows at the Prince George Legion as part of the weeklong music festival this February.

For the first ever Coldsnap late show on February 9, Billie Zizi, the Reviberators and Folky Strum Strum will perform. On February 10, the Coastal Drifters and Elijah Quinn will play late into the night.

These shows will be presented at the Prince George Legion after the Mainstage performances at Knox Performance Centre. Doors for both late night performances will be at 10 p.m., with the show set to start at 10:30 p.m. both nights.

The Prince George Folkfest Society is offering a deal for anyone wanting to see two performances per night. On Feb. 9, Dance Dance Dance at Knox Performance Centre and Late Night Psych at the PG Legion goes for $45 and on Feb. 10, Cultural Confluence at Knox Performance Centre and Coldsnap Wrap Party at the PG Legion also goes for $45.

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved son, brother and uncle, Manjeet Singh Bhatti, on December 12th, 2023. He left us far too soon, leaving a void in our hearts that can never be filled.

Born on August 20th, 1975, Manjeet Singh Bhatti brought immense joy and love into our lives. His kindness, strength, and compassion touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Manjeet was a beacon of light to many and left a lasting impact on those around him.

Manjeet’s memory will forever be cherished by Sohan and Saroj Bhatti, Meena and Neil Aartsen, Reeta and Inder Dhillon, and a wide circle of family and friends who were fortunate to share in his life.

A memorial service to celebrate Manjeet’s life will be held on December 30th, 2023 at 10:00 am at Assman’s Funeral Chapel (1908 Queensway, Prince George, B.C.) followed by an Antim Ardas at Guru Gobind Singh Temple (443 Kelly St S, Prince George, B.C) We invite all who knew him to join us in honoring and remembering the beautiful soul that graced our lives.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Olive’s Branch Recovery in honor of Manjeet. It reflects his commitment to making a positive impact on the world.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of support during this difficult time.

Patricia (Pat) Woodcock 1937-2023 Patricia (Pat) Woodcock, 86, of Prince George, BC, passed away on December 12, 2023.

Pat was born on August 18, 1937 to Neil and Alice Pope in Winnipeg MB. After graduating from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute, Pat started her first job as a secretary in a law office.

In 1954, Pat met William Dixon (Dick) Woodcock at a high school basketball game. Pat and Dick went on to have 4 children.

In 1997, Pat retired from BC Rail and spent her time camping & fishing in Kitimat, then swimming with her swim club and playing cards at senior centers.

Pat was predeceased by her spouse Dick Woodcock, son-in-law Brent Tobin and great granddaughter Alexandra. She is survived by Joanne Wannop (Chalmis), Donald Woodcock (Colleen), Susan Tobin, Pamela Stuerzl (Torsten), as well as, 17 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.

In keeping with Pat’s wishes to spend eternity with her husband among the seas, her ashes will be spread at a later date by her family and friends.

1. For the Mushroom Sauté: Place the dried mushrooms in a medium bowl and cover with the boiling water. Let stand until softened, 20 minutes. Strain in a sieve lined with a double thickness of paper towels and reserve the soaking liquid. Coarsely chop the mushrooms.

2. Heat the olive oil in a medium, heavy frying pan set over medium heat. When hot, add the brown mushrooms and sauté, stirring often, for 6 minutes. Add the reserved mushrooms, garlic, rosemary, and 1⁄2 teaspoon salt; stir for 1 minute. Add the mushroom liquid and cook, stirring, until it has evaporated, 4 to 7 minutes. Season with salt and several grinds of pepper.

Remove the frying pan from the heat and cover with foil to keep warm. (The mushrooms can be prepared 1 day ahead; cool, cover and refrigerate. Reheat, stirring, over medium heat.)

3. For the toast and eggs: Brush both sides of the bread slices generously with olive oil. Set a 10- to 11-inch nonstick frying pan over medium-high heat, and, when hot, add the bread and cook until lightly browned, about 2 minutes per side. Remove the toast and cover loosely with foil. When pan is cool enough to handle, wipe it out with clean paper towels.

4. Add the butter to the frying pan and set it over medium heat. When the butter starts to foam, break an egg into a saucer, being careful to remove any shell fragments., and gently slide it into the frying pan. Repeat with the remaining eggs. Immediately reduce the heat to low and cook, basting the eggs with some of the butter in the pan frequently, until the whites are firm and the yolks are still soft and runny, 3 minutes.

5. While the eggs are cooking, arrange a toasted bread slice on each of four plates. Mound the mushrooms evenly over the toast.

6. Remove each egg with a spatula and arrange on top of the mushrooms. Season with salt and pepper and, if desired, garnish each serving with a rosemary sprig. Serve immediately.

Tip: If you can’t find dried crushed rosemary, crush regular dried rosemary in an electic spice mill, or place it in a self-sealing plastic bag and roll over it with a rolling pin.
