DEAR FRIENDS We are pleased to present the 2018-2019 Annual Report. You’ll find it filled with the warmth, energy, and positivity of the School. The year was marked by program achievements, new program offerings, seamless leadership changes, and repeated recognition of staff excellence, all made possible by your support. Our children and students are making remarkable progress, as evidenced by our program outcomes.

The year was noteworthy in that we launched two high impact programs. The PG RISE at Randolph, our collaborative high school program, opened its first classroom in the fall with P.G. Chambers School staff and the Randolph High School environment. Four teenagers successfully completed their first year in a program that offers our sophisticated special education and therapy expertise in a safe, yet broader, school environment. In addition, we began a year-long consultative relationship with Newark Public Schools’ multiply disabled/medically involved programming.

Services include staff training, curriculum consultation, and onsite assistive technology clinics.

At P.G. Chambers School, excellence is the cornerstone of our work and we are strengthened by the mix of both longterm and new faces. This winter, we honored staff anniversaries including an impressive number of 40, 35, 30, 25, and 20-year awards. We also welcomed Jerry DeFrancisco as our new President of the Board of Trustees, along with new board members Deb Hughes of ADP, Chris Cirrotti of Langan Engineering and Environmental Services, and Bob Rigby of dancker. New members of the management team are Kathleen DeSantis, development director, Schkira Pittman, assistant principal, and Holli Wright, MS, PT, director of physical therapy. We also extend our deepest gratitude to two very special members of the Board of Trustees who completed their terms: Unjeria C. Jackson, MD, who served as President and is now our first honorary emeritus board member, and Tom Walsh, former Vice President of the Board. Both have provided wise leadership and given generously of their time, talent, and treasure for many years.

Staff excellence is evident daily and reflected in our strong outcomes and in professional speaking invitations and awards. For example, senior speech language pathologists Kristin Geraghty and Christine Cayero presented at the American Speech and Hearing Association conference in Boston on teaching graduate students about interprofessional practice as a means to best treat the whole child. This work spawned additional presentations at Seton Hall University and the New Jersey Council for Exceptional Children conference.

Julie Haggerty, DPT, ATP, a recognized leader in the assistive technology field and PGCS director of assistive technology, received the national “Excellence in Creative School-Based Therapy” award from Education Resources, Inc., a leading provider of continuing education for therapists. Janet Michalowski, RN, BSN, CSN, PGCS director of nursing, received recognition as the NJ March of Dimes Pediatric Nurse of the Year.

EXTRA, EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT OUR STUDENTS LEARNING TO READ! Here at P.G. Chambers School, our students keep growing and growing! Our school is proud to immerse our students in a culture of literacy by incorporating literature, creative writing and public speaking into the school day. Students in Kindergarten through grade 8 learn reading foundation skills by participating in two primary curricula, SPIRE and MEville to WEville. SPIRE is a multi-sensory phonics program while MeVille to WeVille emphasizes reading vocabulary related to everyday life. A process of dynamic assessment is used by our teachers to monitor student progress and adjust strategies to foster success.

In the 2018-2019 school year, 92.5% of our school aged student sample demonstrated progress in reading skills!

Self-Care Update!

We have continued to emphasize strategies to promote gains in our students’ self-care skills.

For the 2018-2019 school year, 54% of our students demonstrated gains in self-care skills, while 36% maintained the skills they acquired in previous years.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Every year, P.G. Chambers School has the privilege of working with many talented and passionate volunteers, and for that, we are so grateful. Here is a snapshot of some volunteer activities from 2018-2019: In October 2018, employees from Bayer created a “pumpkin patch” for our students in the Learning Park.

Volunteers helped each student choose the perfect pumpkin and shared in the students’ joy and laughter during this fun event.

Students from Immaculate Conception High School in Lodi visited in January to assist our speech department in creating Pragmatic Organization Dynamic Display (PODD) books. Students toured the school, learned how PODD books support our students in communication, and then got to work helping our staff!

Kids Helping Kids, a volunteer student group from Hanover Park Regional High School, came to PGCS in February to read snowman books with our students and make a snowman craft to take home. The students returned to PGCS in the spring to assist with field day.

Throughout the year, members of our board of trustees, board committees, and special event committees, all give of their time to advance the mission of PGCS. We are continually amazed at the dedication and caring of our community.

FOREVER FORWARD Recent Legacy gifts totaling over $766,000 impact students today and tomorrow Eliot Goldberg was a resident of the Borough of Morris Plains and upon the death of his only heir, P.G. Chambers School received an unrestricted bequest of $611,000. We are beyond grateful for the seed that was planted many years ago by those who came before us. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Eliot and his late daughter Linda Ermine for this transformational gift to our students. While we wish we could have celebrated their generosity in their lifetime, please know that we celebrate them now with much gratitude and appreciation for this truly special gift.

The late Ruth and Harry Kalish

For more than 40 years, Ruth Kalish hosted Broadway theatre trips to raise money to support P.G. Chambers School. Ruth was first introduced to the school, which was then called the Easter Seals Center, by the late long-time P.G. Chambers Auxiliary member, Estelle Kanter. Together with a group of dedicated members, they increased awareness of our school and raised over $250,000 through the theatre trip fund raiser which still exists today. But Ruth’s desire to help children with disabilities started back when she was a driver for the United Cerebral Palsy in Queens. At that time, her husband Harry was commuting from Long Island to work at Bell Labs in Whippany, and

Harry and Ruth Kalish designated a portion of their charitable remainder annuity trust to continue the work they have been so passionate about for over 40 years. it would not be long before they decided to make New Jersey their home. As a new resident of East Hanover, Ruth immediately searched for a place to volunteer her time and support children with disabilities. PGCS was the grateful beneficiary until her death in June 2017.

Ruth was predeceased by her loving husband, Harry in December 2015.

Harry was a genius, artist, computer technician, selftaught pianist, and a true renaissance man who enjoyed a distinguished career at Bell Labs working in the early stages of computer graphics. Both Harry and Ruth enjoyed the arts, jazz and going to the theatre. Upon Harry’s retirement in 1981, Harry and Ruth started a modest business selling art supplies, which quickly grew into an international business designing and selling Kalish Finest Brushes to artists all over the U.S. and beyond. Harry and Ruth were true entrepreneurs who always followed their passion for engineering, design, and the arts.

Ruth and Harry gave so much during their lifetime to P.G. Chambers School and many other worthwhile organizations. Their legacy of love and caring for individuals with disabilities will live on through their recent $155,845 gift from their charitable remainder annuity trust. Ruth and Harry will always be an inspiration and we are forever grateful for their generous and thoughtful gift.

EARLY INTERVENTION High impact for our youngest population When a child is born with a disability or exhibits signs of developmental delays, it is best to begin services quickly.

P.G. Chambers School’s early intervention program provides interventions and therapies tailored to each child’s individual needs and gives parents and caregivers essential tools, including strategies to implement developmentally stimulating activities at home, information on how to access resources, and techniques to plan and advocate for their child.

A parent shared that observing her child’s therapy sessions, asking questions, and implementing the techniques in their daily routine are all extremely beneficial. As she puts it, “I’m there to learn when therapy is taking place. The parent is very much a part of the team.” The collaborative approach and communication between therapists and parents are a vital part of our program’s success.

P.G. Chambers School’s early intervention program is one of the few that offers center-based groups for toddlers. It is during these invaluable weekly sessions that children have the opportunity to develop social skills in a fun, interactive environment. Beth Skolnick, mother of a recent participant, described the group sessions stating, “Imagine my daughter and I going to a beautiful and stimulating space

where in the course of an hour they played, sang, did an art project, bubbles, and the infamous parachute! This felt like what typical kids did but in a supportive, therapeutic environment...”

Thanks to philanthropic support, our early intervention program continued to grow in 2018 - 2019 and served 172 infants and toddlers with disabilities and developmental delays. Program highlights from the year include intensive staff training on working with young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and hosting three transition workshops designed to inform and empower families in preparation for the transition from early intervention to preschool.

Unfortunately, State funding falls well below the amount needed to provide a comprehensive early intervention program of this caliber. With the support of funders who recognize the program’s impact, P.G. Chambers School is able to continue providing these services. We graciously thank the following generous funders from the 2018 – 2019 program year; The F.M. Kirby Foundation, the Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation, the C. Northrop and Alethea Marder Pond Foundation, The Margaret and Peter Chang Foundation, The Gertrude L. Hirsch Foundation, the MDRT Foundation, and other special friends.

PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES We are thrilled to welcome Jerry DeFrancisco as our new President of the Board of Trustees at P.G. Chambers School. Jerry is President of Beacon Professional Group, LLC., and a Distinguished Executive in Residence, Center for Academic Community Engagement, Siena College. Jerry is the former President of Humanitarian Services at American Red Cross where he provided leadership and management oversight of operations for 1,500 local Red Cross locations across the country and around the world. Prior to his tenure with the Red Cross, Jerry was a senior executive with AT&T and he brings his executive-level leadership skills to advancing the mission of the School. In addition to serving on the Board’s personnel and strategic committees, Jerry gives his time to support P.G. Chambers School’s Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) program, preparing the next generation of leaders within the organization. Welcome, Jerry!

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT We are excited to welcome Kathleen DeSantis, who has joined P.G. Chambers School as our new director of development. Kathleen comes to us with 33 years of development experience having served for the past 12 years as the Director of Alumni and Development at Far Hills Country Day School.

Kathleen also served as Director of Major Gifts at Morristown Memorial Health Foundation where she served as a member of the fund raising team to secure $29 million to build the Goryeb Children’s Hospital. Kathleen spent 10 years of her career at Wildwood Programs, a school and comprehensive service provider for children and adults with autism. Kathleen is a certified fund raising executive who has

been active in the fund raising community serving on industry boards, as a guest speaker, and a mentor to many. She is passionate about our mission and is enjoying getting to know our extended community. When asked what brought her to PGCS, Kathleen’s answer was quite simple, “I love kids as evidenced by my career choices, and to return to helping kids with disabilities and their families brings joy to my heart. I look forward to partnering with the dedicated staff, board, and our many generous contributors to continue to build a comprehensive advancement program that will help sustain PGCS for many years to come.”

The PGCS student leadership group held a clothing drive to benefit Roots and Wings in Denville NJ. Roots and Wings provides safe housing, case management, education, counseling and life skills to young adults who age out of foster care.

Our students collected and donated a total of 297 bags for people in need- how amazing!

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Nicole Craig is a proud and devoted alumna of P.G. Chambers School. Just the mention of her alma mater makes her break out into a huge smile!

Upon graduating from P.G. Chambers School, Nicole began her high school career at Horizon High School, where she starred in their production of Little Mermaid.

This story really resonated with Nicole because like her, the little mermaid had to find ways of communicating without a voice.

Nicole’s school career began in 1999 at age 3! P.G. Chambers School provided the joys of friendship, routine, seasonal celebrations, and the pride of accomplishment and independence; all the wonderful aspects of school life. Nicole loved being a part of the PGCS family. She remembers her teachers, aids, therapists, and staff with great fondness. And no wonder.

Each child is seen for her/his unique beauty and individuality.

At the age of 22, Nicole graduated from Horizon, and now attends a day program called the Sparta Center.

She is not the least bit shy and participates in everything.

She even motivated the staff to start doing science experiments! Last year, Nicole received a “Participant of the Year” award and the Center had a dinner in her honor. The experiences, exposure, and love Nicole received at P.G. Chambers School laid the foundation for her confidence and enjoyment of life, in high school, and now, as a young adult.

Now, at 23 Nicole maintains friendships with several old PGCS friends. She loves to reminisce about all of the amazing things that happened over her twelve years of growth and discovery. She loved being in the school plays such as Willy Wonka, The Polar Express, Beauty and the Beast, and Snow White, inspiring her love of plays, music, and books.

We are grateful for our PGCS family for helping Nicole discover her unique talents and to develop the confidence to pursue all that life has to offer.
