H

ere we are, another year has passed and the Association continues to spread the word of “EACH OTHERS KEEPER.” I remember that when I came into the office in December of 1998, the Associations assets were $50,734,211 and the surplus was standing at $12,611,126. Our country suffered a monumental disaster in 2001 and many heroes were lost in a hateful and unwarranted attack on our countries core values. Over the years that followed, the Association continued to advance our mission statement and increased our membership as we continue to provide life, health, and fraternal benefits to our members.

Today, the Association is proud of our assets of $194,423,419 as of September 30, 2018 and surplus $56,403,294 during the same time period.

With the help of our actuary, we have developed an outstanding Cancer plan and it has become one of our leading products. Within a couple of years of its introduction the Association enhanced the benefits by 50% without increasing the premium to our members.

Also, we have enhanced our Accident Only plan to keep up with our ever changing healthcare coverage. The future looks bright for the Association to provide insurance coverage to police officers, firefighters, and correctional officers. Our Fraternal Benefits continue to grow as the Board of Directors have increased our Scholarship and Orphans Income benefits and we are proud to say that over $10,000,000 in scholarship money has been awarded to children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of our members since its inception. The Association will continue to find new ways to cover our everyday heroes, providing protection to them and their families.

Fully Engulfed First Floor Akron, Ohio — On July 2, 2018, E4 and L4 arrived to find a man standing outside screaming his kids were in the house. Crews used thermal imaging and officials were able to locate the three children in an upstairs bedroom. Firefighter Jon Michael Willoughby, Lieutenant Paul Kittle, and Firefighter Bob Lucey braved heavy fire and smoky conditions to find the three children. Once everyone was rescued, the fire was extinguished and no one was injured.

Firefighters remained on the scene several hours after extinguishing the fire watching for flare ups.

Cincinnati, OH — On September 6, 2018, gunshots and chaos erupted in the heart of Cincinnati’s downtown when a man opened fire in the lobby of Fifth Third Center, killing three people and wounding two others.

Dozens of police officers, including PFIA Agent/Officer Greg Toyeas, Police Officers’ Jennifer Chilton, Antonio Etter, and Eric Kaminsky rushed to the scene and exchanged gunfire with the suspect. A crowd of people who had been on their way to work scattered across Fountain Square to safety.

The gunman was shot and killed by police officers after a brief gun battle.

PFIA was again a proud sponsor of the Central Coventry Fire District’s annual Trap Shoot. The event raises funds for the CCFD Relief Association in honor of James Harrington who succumbed to occupational cancer.

McCoy Stadium is currently the home to the Pawtucket Red Sox, Triple A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. All money raised was split and donated to the Pawtucket Firemen’s Relief Association, Pawtucket Police Explorers Program and The Boys and Girls Club of Pawtucket.

On October 5, 2018, on Larimer Square in Denver, Colorado, hundreds of firefighters, representing dozens of local and national firehouses, will compete with their best red and green chile recipes. All proceeds go to the Colorado Muscular Dystrophy Association. This year PFIA sponsored Denver Fire Station # 9.

PFIA sponsored several holes at the 2018 Stamford Professional Firefighter’s Association’s annual benefit golf tournament that was held on September 20, 2018 at the Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course in Fairfield, Connecticut.

The benefit raised over $4,000 for the Bennett Cancer Center of the Stamford Hospital.

Guns and Hoses team up for first charity hockey game on September 9, 2018. Summit County (Akron, Ohio) Sheriff Deputies and Green firefighters team up for the first charity hockey game with the proceeds split between Christmas Shop with a Cop and Muscular Dystrophy Association. They played 3 twenty-minute periods with the Hoses winning this year. They hope to make this an annual event. PFIA Agent Don Trejbal attended and contributed on behalf of PFIA. The Cedar Rapids Fire Department Fire Bowl Charity Event for St. Florian Fire and Burn Foundation was held September 29, 2018 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The fund raiser involved local area fire and police departments playing volleyball.

Annual New Britain PD vs FD charity softball game which raised $900 for The CT Breast Health Initiative on behalf of a lieutenant from the police department who was diagnosed with breast cancer this year. This was our third year having the game and first win for the police department with a final score of 14-8.

The Elk Volunteer Fire Department Annual Fish Fry raised over $5,000.

EVFD was very appreciative of the donation received from Police and Firemen’s Insurance Association for their continued support.

The Akron Police Department’s Kids Need A Firm Foundation (K.N.A.F.F.), the Victims Assistance Program, and the Fraternal Order of Police Akron Lodge #7 partnered for a fund day for children. The 18th annual K.N.A.F.F. picnic was July 27, 2018 at the FOP Lodge at Wolter Park. Children ages 17 and under, accompanied by an adult, enjoyed a fun and free afternoon with local law enforcement. Activities included free food, K-9 demonstrations, archery, fishing, face painting, and more.

The picnic is held each year in honor of Officer George R. Knaff killed in the line of duty on November 5, 1994. Officer Knaff had a love for children and a special place in his heart for the kids he interacted with on his beat. In his memory, the picnic offers a fun opportunity for children to positively engage with police officers and a day free from violence to ‘just be a kid.’

In addition, representatives from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources were on hand to help teach fishing and archery and Guardians Advocating Child Safety and Protection provided free child ID & fingerprinting cards. The annual picnic is funded in part by The Millennium Fund for Children of the Akron Community Foundation. The day was a huge success.

Y B R E D X O B AP O S S D I K R E P NATIONAL SU National Super Kids Classic is held at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. This event allows children with disabilities and special needs to race down the All-American Soap Box Derby Hill and experience the “Thrill of the Hill.” Each racer must win their race in their community in order to race in the national race.

The racers come from all over the United States. They race in special cars built for two. The copilot has racing experience driving one-person soap box derby cars. Their expenses are paid and they are housed in a local hotel during their stay. A banquet is held the night before the race, where each racer is given a trophy because they are all winners. After the race, they are treated to a picnic at Akron Fraternal Order of Police Park.

The board members of Super Kids are all volunteers, many being police officers, spouses of officers, and local business owners. PFIA sponsored a car in this year race again as in years in the past. PFIA Agent Don Trejbal was able to attend the dinner and was able to sit with some of the racers. It is a quite President of Super Kids/Retired Judge humbling experience. These Racers are SUPER KIDS! TIMELINE

PRESERVING THE HISTORY OF

First Responders Officer Hugh Burns First Indianapolis officer to lose his life in the line of duty.

During the evening of August 28, 1882, Officer Hugh Burns, 38, was shot and killed by a young Kentuckian who had arrived in the city only a few hours before the incident.

Passing through Indianapolis while en route for Kansas City, John J. Jeter of Campbellsville, Kentucky, spent the time waiting for the west bound train drinking and playing cards. Later accounts suggest he may have been robbed at some time during the evening.

At about 10:00 p.m., he suddenly appeared in front of Keating’s saloon, at the corner of Garden and Tennessee Streets armed with a revolver. Waving the gun at another patron, Jeter was heard to say, “You’re the [one] that insulted me.” During the course of a struggle, the gun was discharged, the bullet flying harmlessly away.

Jeter then broke loose and still flourishing his revolver, made the crowd stand quiet while he cursed and yelled at them.

Living nearby, Officer Hugh Burns heard the commotion while sitting in the doorway of his residence, off-duty. Without stopping to put on his coat or arm himself, he crossed over to the saloon to quiet the disturbance.

He found the crowd being held at bay by Jeter. Approaching Jeter, Officer Burns laid his hand upon Jeter’s left arm, stating, “I’m an officer – consider yourself under arrest.”

Jeter was standing at the time with his revolver held high. As Officer Burns spoke, Jeter answered, “the hell you are,” and dropping the muzzle of his weapon, fired an overhand shot at point blank range.

The bullet struck Officer Burns just below the neck, ranging downward, penetrated the aorta inflicting a wound almost instantly fatal. Officer Burns staggered back and attempted to clutch a post, but fell to the ground. As he did so, Jeter fired a second shot, striking the officer’s left arm.

Jeter attempted to escape by fleeing on foot. With considerable resistance and injury, he was captured and subdued by the crowd.

Officer Burns was survived by his wife Catharine, whom he had married earlier the year he died.

She had been home preparing a meal when her husband had left to go to the disturbance. Hearing the shots, she called to him. Getting no reply, she ran into the street and saw him lying there. With the assistance of others, she lifted him and carried him into their home.

Officer Burns was also survived by a young brother, James, of whom The Indianapolis Republican wrote: “(He) almost doted upon Hugh, and the love of the two brothers was wonderful.”

Officer Burns was well known in the city. He had come to the United States many years before as a small boy. When he grew up he became a bartender and afterward kept a saloon at the corner of Illinois and Georgia streets. Having sold his saloon, he became a member of the police force about three months prior to his death. At the time of his death he was in line for promotion.

Services were held at St. John’s Cathedral where a large assemblage of friends gathered. A line of 150 carriages followed the remains to the Catholic cemetery for burial.

A month after Officer Burns’death, Mrs. Burns was reported to be dangerously ill with typhoid fever. Having left home before daybreak one morning, she was found several hours later lying beside the grave of her husband. Mrs. Burns survived her illness and remarried a number of years later. She died in 1925.

Her gravesite lies next to both husbands at Holy Cross Cemetery, Section B, Block 9, Plot 587.

Officer Burns is the first IPD officer known to have been killed in the line-of-duty. Until August 28, 2018, there was no marker at his gravesite detailing his sacrifice.

The IMPD Leadership Academy dedicated a foot stone for him at Holy Cross and Saint Joseph’s Cemetery on Meridian.

The ceremony included a 21 gun salute, the chief’s honor guard, and a flag folding ceremony.

“Every fallen officer has the same kind of story, it’s similar in ways.

And even though he died over 100 years ago, we try to remember the fallen in the same way,” said Detective Erin Anderson.

FALLEN HEROES Garrett Willis Hull Fort Worth Police Department (TX) 17-year veteran Police Officer Garrett Hull succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained as he and other members of the Criminal Intelligence Unit attempted to apprehend three armed robbery suspects.

The officers had been conducting surveillance of the three suspects, who had been involved in more than 15 armed robberies in which three people were shot.

The suspects entered a bar shortly before midnight and robbed the 10 patrons at gunpoint. As they fled from the building the officers attempted to take them into custody.

All three suspects attempted to flee on foot into the surrounding neighborhood. During the foot pursuit, one of the men opened fire, striking Officer Hull in the head. Other officers returned fire and killed the subject before placing Officer Hull in a patrol car and transporting him to a hospital.

The other two suspects were apprehended nearby.

Officer Hull succumbed to his wounds the following evening.

Frank A. McClelland Jr. Ludowici Police Department (GA) 21-year veteran Chief of Police Frank McClelland was struck and killed by a vehicle being pursued by other officers.

The pursuit had started in Liberty County and continued through Hinesville and into Long County on Highway 84 at speeds topping 100 mph. Chief McClelland was attempting to stop traffic at the intersection of Highway 84 and McDonald Street when the vehicle struck him. The vehicle then left the roadway and fatally struck a motorcyclist at an adjacent gas station before coming to rest.

The fleeing subject was taken into custody at the scene. He was charged with two counts of murder, vehicular homicide, and DUI. Chief of Police McClelland was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War.

Above and Beyond Gaining Entry

Englewood, New Jersey – On December 9, 2017, Officer Joseph Doyle responded to a report of a medical emergency inside a residence. On his arrival, he learned that the individual who was having the emergency fell down a flight of stairs while attempting to let the EMT’s in.

Officer Doyle was also informed the individual, a 99-year-old man, was unconscious at the bottom of the stairs at the base of the side door. Officer Doyle looked through the window at the top of the door and observed the unconscious male with visible signs of injury. Officer Doyle exhausted all means of gaining entry to the residence by attempting to locate an open window or other doors. Once that failed, he had no other choice but to attempt forcing entry through the front door. Due to the present snow storm, which had already produced 5-6 inches of snow and other emergency calls for service that were ongoing, Officer Doyle had to accomplish this task by himself without any assistance or backup. Even though the EMT’s were present, they were not authorized to assist with forcing entry. Officer Doyle had a great deal of difficulty gaining entry to the residence due to poor traction and iced surface conditions on the front steps and landing. He used his left shoulder and left

leg to attempt entry. He finally gained entry and the victim was resuscitated and initially treated on scene. He was eventually transported to the hospital for further treatment.

Officer Doyle acts were selfless and his determination and persistency saved this mans life.

Officer Doyle was diagnosed with a separated shoulder, a back injury, and bursitis in his left hip over the course of time.

An Officer and a Veteran

Pueblo, Colorado — On March 5, 2018, officers were dispatched about a man with a weapon.

Corporal Richard Jones was the first on scene and saw the male on the south side of a parking garage.

He was sitting on the curb with his head held down and was holding a handgun between his legs.

Corporal Jones ordered the male to put down the gun, but he refused as he asked him to kill him multiple times. Corporal Jones learned he is a veteran with the United States Military and spoke to him as a fellow vet and offered him help. The victim agreed that he needed help, but clearly felt that the system had let him down and there were no other options.

The victim told Corporal Jones the only way he could help him was to take his life. Jones pleaded with the victim to put the gun down, but he seemed determined to end his life; suicide by cop.

With time and patience, Corporal Jones created trust and rapport with the victim. He eventually agreed to put the gun down and to get the help he needed.

Due to the commonalities with this victim, eventually leading him to place his gun on the ground and get the help he desperately needed, Corporal Jones was professional and recognized that a fellow vet was in emotional agony.

The skillful efforts displayed a spirit of determination that saved this man’s life. The Pueblo Police Departments mission states in part that we are obligated to preserve the peace, reduce fear, and provide for a safe environment; all of which Corporal Richard Jones fulfilled on this day.

Sleeping Residents

Savannah, Georgia – On March 11, 2018, Savannah Fire was dispatched to an early morning fire at an apartment complex. Engine 8 (Captain Mike Metivier, MFF Charles Pottorff, AFF Amber Barnes, and AFF John Schmaltz) arrived within five minutes and found a female victim with severe burns was already outside her apartment, which was on fire and spreading to the second floor above. She was taken to the Burn Center and remains in critical condition. Motel Fire

McAllen, Texas — On July 2, 2018, McAllen Fire Department Engine Company 3 (Lt. Marco Martinez, Driver Aaron Valdez, and Firefighter Alfredo Pena) responded to a motel fire. They were faced with a rescue situation, entering and rescuing a motel guest who had received burns.

Upon tending to their patient, it was discovered that her dog was still in the room. The patient was transported to the hospital and later transferred to the burn center in San Antonio. The crew of Engine 3 was able to find the dog.

They took the pet to the station and cared for him until the patient was released a couple of weeks later. The patient returned to pick up her dog and asked the McAllen city council to recognize these fine gentlemen.

Akron, Ohio — On July 20, 2018, officers were dispatched to a 2-year-old in cardiac arrest.

Officer Timothy Hunt, Officers’ Gary White Jr., Felicia Tinney, and Drew Campbell arrived on scene. They were met by EMS Paramedics Craig Griffith and

Chris Maresco and entered the house to find the unfortunate situation of a 2-year-old not breathing, with no pulse. EMS quickly picked up the child and took him out to the med unit.

Overwhelmed with trying to start an IV and doing CPR, Officer Hunt quickly jumped in the med unit and asked them what he could help with. Officer Hunt did CPR on the young child for approximately 20 minutes (in the parking lot and the entire drive to the children’s hospital). Once at the hospital, EMS quickly moved to the child into the trauma room where doctors and nurses took over. After working on the young boy for approximately an hour, the child finally had a stable pulse. The quick actions from our officers and EMS saved this boys life. The child was in critical care but hopefully will continue to live a healthy life.

Savannah, Georgia —On August 29, 2018, Officers Terrell Truit, Ian Gallagher, and Shaquille Brown responded to a structure fire. Dispatch advised that a female was inside of the home and could not get out because of the thick smoke. Officers’ Truit, Gallagher, and Brown arrived ahead of firefighters and immediately ran into the residence. Officer Gallagher opened the front door but was met with a very thick black cloud of smoke, which covered the entire home and visibility was extremely low. The fire began to engulf the back of the residence where the kitchen was located. Officer Gallagher attempted to make entry into the front of the residence while calling out to the female, but he could not enter due to the thickness of the smoke. He tried turning his back from the front door, trying to catch his breath.

The woman inside was becoming frantic and as she began searching for a window, there were screams for help coming from the home, which officers heard. Officers’ Truit and Brown finally located the woman at one of the side windows where she was attempting to keep her head outside to breath. She was unable to pull herself out of the home due to her physical condition so all of the officers pulled her out and escorted her away from the scene. The fire department arrived and neutralized the fire. The quick thinking and ability to work together saved this woman’s life.

n May 2018, Sheila Thun, retired lieutenant from the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office, attended the “Annual Brothers and Sisters in Law Enforcement Luncheon.” This is a group of retired and active peace officers that join together with their families to share a common brotherhood luncheon. Their guest speaker was Sheriff Parnell McNamara, a man who has been fighting crime all of his adult life.

Prior to becoming the sheriff, he

served the state as a U.S. Deputy Marshal. Sheriff McNamara followed in his fathers’ footsteps, along with his brother, Mike McNamara, who were also Marshals.

Like every city in the nation, there is the good and there is the bad. They have had their share of tragedies in McLennan County from the Branch Davidians Standoff, to the West Explosion, and to our recent events of Human Trafficking.

Human Trafficking has rapidly spread across our nation. Many people think human trafficking is kidnapping a victim, moving them across state or national boarders, and coerced into trafficking but victims are regularly seen in everyday instances and missed by law enforcement and even health care professionals. There are several indicators and law enforcement around the country will stop at nothing to eliminate this life shattering crime.

Human trafficking, also known as trafficking in persons (TIP), is a modern-day form of slavery.

It is a crime under federal and international law; it is also a crime in every state in the United States.

The McLennan County Sheriff’s Office started cracking down on trafficking in 2014, and has since placed 4th in the nation against these crimes. Arrest rates have been high and have included all walks of life.

Massage parlors, buyers, and johns (individual who pays for or trades something of value for sexual acts) are creating this demand on all fronts. Some immigrants are brought here with the hopes and dreams of coming to America for a better life. Their dreams are quickly shattered when they become coerced into slavery by madams and pimps.

Many of those who were found working in local massage parlors speak no English, have no cars, and are sleeping on the floor. The victim is usually from another country, but is not always the case.

“What we’ve come to find is human trafficking isn’t always a small, isolated event with a trafficker and two girls. Often times it’s very large-scale, sophisticated, organized crime network that is profiting on the backs of men, women, and children.”

Detectives have made hundreds of arrests on various charges in their efforts to combat human trafficking in recent years.

They will be re-focusing their efforts, but the goals remain the same, McNamara said.

According to Homeland Security, anyone can join in the fight against human trafficking. As a public servant, recognizing the key indicators is the first step in identifying victims that can help save a life. Here are some common indicators to help: • Does the person appear disconnected from family, friends, community organizations, or houses of worship?

Has a child stopped attending school?

•

Has the person had a sudden or dramatic change in behavior?

•

Is a juvenile engaged in commercial sex acts?

•

Is the person disoriented or confused, or showing signs of mental or physical abuse?

•

Does the person have bruises in various stages of healing?

Sheriff McNamara’s office is shifting its attention away from transactional arrests to focus on the people running human trafficking operations. Most arrests for prostitution charges are listed as Class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to 180 days in county jail and a fine of up to $2,000, and many firsttime offenders get deferred probation, court records show.

Does the person show signs of having been denied food, water, sleep, or medical care?

•

Is the person often in the company of someone to whom he or she defers? Or someone who seems to be in control of the situation, e.g., where they go or who they talk to?

“When we did our first sting, we had no idea what to expect, so when we arrested 20 people it was shocking,” said Detective Joseph Scaramucci, the departments lead human trafficking investigator.

Runaways are also at a greater risk of human trafficking because they have likely gone through traumas such as abuse, which exacerbates a disconnection between children and a community, putting them further in jeopardy. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children says that out of nearly 25,000 reports of runaways it received in 2017, one in seven was likely a victim of child sex trafficking.

The sheriff’s office works with other agencies around the state including San Antonio Police Department, Bell County Sheriff’s Office, Houston Police Department, and the Grand Prairie Police Department. They all ask the same question, how do you do it? The Sheriff stated, “My officers go under cover posing as men looking to pay for sex.”

Sheriff McNamara quoted, “There are some sick individuals out there and one that stands out in my mind was someone requesting a four year old and then a two year old. We must get these individuals off of our streets.”

You can build workouts around the Tabata principle in fourminute blocks, changing the exercise after each four-minute stint. For example you could do four minutes on the rower, four of press-ups, four of jump squats and four on a stationary bike.

You don’t want to make the overall workout too long, though, because this will probably mean you’re unable to maintain the intensity. It’s also important to make sure you warm up before your first 20-second stint at max intensity.

20-Minute Full-Body Tabata Workout If you’re ready to try some Tabata, this 20-minute workout from Maximuscle training expert Dan Lambert that targets muscles all over the body is a great place to start.

“When I use Tabata I like to bounce between two compound exercises – one upper body and one lower body – to increase heart

rate, distribute blood around the whole body and increase lactate production in the large muscle groups,” says Lambert.

Complete 20 seconds of exercise A, rest for ten seconds, then complete 20 seconds of exercise B and rest for ten seconds. Repeat this pattern four times for one full Tabata and then move on to the next pair of exercises. Complete five rounds with five different pairs of exercises in total.

1A Burpee Stand with feet shoulderwidth apart. Drop and place your hands on the floor just outside of your feet. Keeping your core engaged, quickly jump your feet back so you end up in the press-up position, then jump your feet back to between your hands. Jump up explosively and clap your hands overhead.

1B Heavy medicine ball slam Stand with your feet shoulderwidth apart with a heavy medicine ball between and slightly in front of your feet. Squat down to pick up the medicine ball, keeping your back straight and holding the medicine ball at the sides so your palms are facing each other.

Return to standing, then bring the ball above your head. Squeeze your glutes for extra force and, hinging at the hips, slam the ball into the ground with all your might.

2A Weighted walking lunge Hold a dumbbell in each hand by your sides with palms facing inward. Keeping your back straight and chest up, step forwards and slowly lower your body until your knees are bent at 90°, keeping your torso upright.

Hold this position for 1-2 sec. and squeeze your glutes. Step forwards with the other foot and repeat the move. Ensure your knees don’t go too far forwards beyond your toes because this can damage the joint.

2B Dumbbell thruster Hold a dumbbell in each hand above your shoulders with palms facing inward (a neutral grip).

Squat down until your hamstrings are parallel to the floor, keeping your back straight and the

dumbbells in position. Push through your heels to return to standing and press the dumbbells overhead.

3A Press-up Assume a face-down position on a gym mat. Place your hands on the floor in line with your shoulders but slightly more than shoulderwidth apart. Without flaring your elbows outward, lower your body until your chest is almost touching the floor, then press back up to the start, again without flaring your elbows. Keep your glutes squeezed and your hips in line with your torso and shoulders.

3B Jump squat Stand with your feet shoulderwidth apart and place your hands behind your head. Squat down until your legs are parallel with the floor, squeezing your glutes at the bottom. Explode back up and off the ground by driving

through your heels. Keep your chest elevated and back straight throughout.

4A Assisted pull-up This can be performed either on a machine-assisted station or with a strong resistance band tied around a pull-up bar. Hold the pull-up bar with a overhand (pronated) grip just wider than shoulder-width.

Place both knees on the seat or band until your body is at full length. Contract your lats and pull your body up until your chin reaches the level of the bar.

4B Kettlebell swing Stand with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Hold a kettlebell in front of you with both hands using an overhand grip. Hinge at your hip, bringing your glutes back while keeping the back straight. Explode forward to swing the kettlebell up until it reaches chest height, keeping your arms outstretched.

5A Renegade row with press-up Adopt the top press-up position, gripping two dumbbells that are resting on the floor. Perform a press-up, then lift one dumbbell straight up into your midriff, lower it and then row the other dumbbell up in a similar fashion, ensuring your hips remain in line with your torso.

5B Mountain climber Start in a top press-up position.

Bring one knee towards your chest, then as that leg returns to the start position bring the other knee up towards your chest.

Repeat this movement pattern as quickly as possible. Ensure your core is engaged to keep your balance.

Sheriff’s Department K-9 receives donated protective vest

The donation comes from Vested Interest in K-9s through the Amazon Smile donor percentage purchases program. Department officials expect delivery of the K-9 vest within 8 to 10 weeks.

The East Tauton, MA based charity organization Vested Interest in K-9s works to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other forms of assistance to law enforcement dogs and other related agencies throughout the U.S.

“The nonprofit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially lifesaving body armor for their four-legged K-9 officers,” the press release stated. “Since its inception Vested Interest in K-9s provided 2,900 protective vests in 50 states through private and corporate donations, at a value of $5.7 million dollars.”

Department officials stated the program is open to dogs “actively employed in the US with law enforcement or related agencies.” Dogs must be certified and at least 20 months of age to receive a donated vest. Additionally, new K-9 graduates and K-9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate in the program.

The value of the donated vest is estimated between $1,744 and $2,283. A donation to provide one protective vest for a law enforcement K-9 is tallied at $950. The vests themselves come with a five-year warranty and weigh roughly four to five pounds each.

“There is an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K-9s throughout the United States,” according to the press release.

Vested Interest in K-9s has volunteer opportunities for interested citizens and also accepts tax-deductible donations of any denomination.

HERE’S THE FUN

A Little Humor Sometimes life gives you lemons, sometimes it gives you bananas, and sometimes it gives you something you’d never expect!

On September 21, 2018, Texas Department of Criminal Justice was donated 2 pallets of bananas comprised of 45 boxes. They were donated at the Ports of America in Freeport due to already being ripe.

Two sergeants of the Scott Unit arrived to pick them up and discovered something not quite right.

One of the boxes felt different than the others. They snipped the straps, pulled free the box, and opened it up. Inside, under a bundle of bananas, he found another bundle! Inside that, what appeared to be a white powdery substance. They immediately notified port authorities and awaited their instruction.

U.S. Customs arrived on the scene and the substance tested positive for cocaine. Customs agents then searched each box on the two pallets and they were all ripe and loaded. Once all 45 boxes had been emptied, what was left was quite the cache.

With an instinct that something just wasn’t quite right, our guys uncovered 540 packages of cocaine within the shipment, with an estimated street value of $17,820,000!

Now, the Drug Enforcement Administration and U.S. Customs and Border Protection are both continuing their investigation.

CHARITABLE FUND

PFIA’S

Charitable Fund PFIA can accept charitable contributions to the Fund that are tax deductible for the person or company donating.

The Board consists of the Executive Committee and two other current Board Members. The Board will determine every December meeting how much PFIA will contribute to the fund and then distribute the funds to predetermined charities. The fund will be distributed to a zero balance and start over on January 1st of every year.

We will lean heavily towards children and military families. The four funds that we will contribute to will be: Make-A-Wish Foundation®, Special Olympics, Special Operations Warrior Foundation, and St.

Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Everyone gives money to charities of their choice but we think giving our members a place to give, they know 100% of funds are distributed to charities close to their heart will be a very benevolent endeavor.

We think that will be a great extension of our fraternal mission and hope it is received well and becomes the go to place for members to help others.

What better way to fulfill our fraternal mission in today’s society with over 100 years of service with donating money to the deserving funds listed?
