Letter from the President

Welcome to the Summer 2025 issue of The Protector!

We are excited to report we have received 239 applications for our Scholarship Program this year! PFIA provides $600,000 of funding for 100 scholarships each year. The high school seniors who applied this year have a better than one in three chance of receiving the scholarship! The deadline to apply was May 15. The scholarship recipients will be notified later this summer. If your student did not apply this year, or if they did apply and were not awarded a scholarship, they are free to apply as a sophomore and throughout their undergraduate years. PFIA has awarded over 12 million dollars in scholarships since beginning this program in 1987. Contact your local representative for deadlines and more information on how to apply.

Another fraternal benefit our Association provides is our Uninsurable Child Benefit. This benefit provides $10,000 of Whole Life insurance at standard rates to an eligible child, age 0-23, of a member in good standing with the Association who applies for a policy and is declined because of health reasons. All underwriting procedures will be exhausted before a policy is issued. Contact your local representative for more information.

Remember to keep us informed of any changes you would like to make in your coverage, beneficiaries or contact information. Your local representative can be found in the back of The Protector magazine.

Finally, we would like to congratulate Vice President of Operations Jeanie Williams on her 35 years of service to our Association and we wish her a long and happy retirement!

We hope you have a fun and safe summer!

Fraternally,

Buffalo New York Fire Department, Local 282, retired

THOSE WHO PERFORM Above and Beyond

Developing a plan

On April 8, 2025, E26 was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident (MVA) with a report of persons trapped. Upon arrival, E26 found a two-vehicle accident, with one vehicle overturned on the westbound sidewalk. After sizing up the scene, E26 determined that no individuals were trapped at that time.

Upon further investigation and after speaking with bystanders, it was discovered that two off-duty members of IAFF Local 73—who happened to be working the election polls at the library across the street—had immediately sprung into action and extricated the injured civilians from the severely damaged vehicle. These members crossed four lanes of relentless traffic on foot to reach the scene.

Once at the vehicles, they discovered two civilians trapped inside the overturned truck. Without hesitation, they began to develop a plan to extricate the victims from the heap of sharp, mangled metal. Utilizing the only tools available—a rock and a pickaxe—these quick-thinking individuals managed to pry the crumpled door open to gain access to the patients. They then carefully assessed and removed the civilians from the vehicle.

Thanks to their swift and courageous actions, these members saved valuable time and likely prevented further injury to the victims.

Captain David Reinecke and Firefighter Matthew Zoia were off duty at the time and had no access to the tools or personal protective equipment (PPE) typically available while on duty. Nonetheless, they acted with extraordinary bravery and selflessness. Their actions demonstrated the true spirit of valor and service. They are a shining example of what it means to be a firefighter—both on and off duty.

Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis

October 9, 2024

What are diverticulosis and diverticulitis?

In diverticulosis, small pouches develop and bulge out through weak spots in the walls of the colon, typically in the part of the colon called the sigmoid colon on the left side of the abdomen. These small, balloon-like pouches are called diverticula.

The condition is more prevalent as people age. For example, it is estimated that half of people in the United States ages 60 to 80 have diverticulosis, but only one person in 10 develops it by age 40. It is equally common in women and men.

If the diverticula become inflamed or infected, the condition is called diverticulitis.

Diverticulitis can lead to serious complications such as abscess, perforation, intestinal blockage from internal scarring, or fistula, which is an abnormal connection between two organs. A rare but life-threatening complication called peritonitis can occur when diverticula rupture, leaking infection into the abdominal cavity.

Symptoms of diverticulosis and diverticulitis

Most people who have diverticulosis don’t have any symptoms, but some have mild cramps, constipation, or bloating. Diverticulitis causes more severe symptoms, including any of the following, but particularly the first two:

• steady abdominal pain

• tenderness to pressure in the lower abdomen, especially on the left side

• fever

• nausea

• vomiting

• chills

• cramping

• change in bowel habits (constipation or diarrhea)

• sharper pain with breathing or jarring movements such as walking.

Lower intestinal bleeding can occur in people with

diverticulosis. The loss of blood can cause weakness and dizziness.

Diagnosing diverticulosis and diverticulitis

The condition is more prevalent as people age. For example, it is estimated that half of people in the United States aged 60 to 80 have diverticulosis, but only one person in 10 develops it by age 40. It is equally common in women and men. However, unless you have had a colonoscopy, CT scan of your abdomen, or barium enema, you would not be aware they exist.

On the other hand, diverticulitis almost always causes symptoms. Your doctor will ask about your medical history, bowel habits, and diet and will conduct a physical examination. Your doctor will press on your abdomen to check for tenderness.

Based on the location of your symptoms and the location of abdominal pain and tenderness, your doctor may be able to make the diagnosis without further testing. If your doctor is unsure or concerned that you may have an abscess or other complication, he or she will likely order additional studies. These usually include blood tests for signs of infection and an abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan.

Lower intestinal bleeding is commonly caused by a broken blood vessel within a diverticula. But it is often very difficult to identify the exact bleeding site, even with colonoscopy.

Expected duration of diverticulosis and diverticulitis

Diverticula do not disappear unless the section of colon is removed surgically. Diverticulosis is a lifelong condition that can be managed, primarily with adjustments in diet. Symptoms of diverticulitis or bleeding from diverticulosis may subside within a few days after treatment, may continue, or may get worse in the case of severe illness or complications.

Preventing diverticulosis and diverticulitis

People whose diets contain large amounts of fiber are

less likely to develop diverticular disease. The recommended daily fiber intake is at least 20 grams per day, but a healthier goal is 35 grams of fiber daily, preferably from fruits, vegetables, and grains. Your doctor also may recommend unprocessed bran or a fiber product. It is important to increase fiber intake gradually and to drink more water to increase the bulk of the bowel movements, which reduces pressure inside the bowel.

Physical activity also may lower the risk of diverticulosis. Many doctors previously recommended that people with diverticulosis avoid eating nuts, popcorn, and foods with seeds. This restriction has not been proven to prevent diverticulitis.

Treating diverticulosis and diverticulitis

The only possible treatment for diverticulosis is to increase fiber in the diet. Fiber will not heal existing diverticula, but it may prevent more from forming.

If you have symptoms of mild diverticulitis, your doctor may recommend a short period of observation without antibiotics. There are no specific dietary recommendations, but many doctors suggest a low-fiber diet until symptoms resolve. If the diagnosis is uncertain, an abdominal CT scan is usually ordered. Depending on the results, your doctor can then decide if treatment at home with oral antibiotics versus intravenous (IV) antibiotics, either at home or in the hospital.

If fever and pain continues, you may be developing complicated diverticulitis, for example, an abscess can develop when a diverticulum becomes perforated (develops a hole). An abscess is a collection of pus. A surgeon then will help your doctor plan the next step: drainage or surgery. The choice depends on the extent of the problem and your

overall health. Drainage means that the surgeon cleans out the pus.

Surgery also may be required during the hospital stay to treat a particularly severe episode of diverticulitis. Emergency surgery is required if the abscess breaks open and causes peritonitis, the most serious potential complication of diverticulitis. Peritonitis requires surgical repair as well as intravenous antibiotics.

For persistent or recurrent bleeding from diverticulosis, surgery may be the only option.

The most common procedure, known as a colon resection, involves removing the part of the colon that contains the bleeding diverticula and reattaching the ends.

When done during emergencies, a colon resection is often done as a two-stage process. First, a section of colon is removed, but because of infection, it is not safe to rejoin the ends. Instead, the surgeon creates a temporary hole, or stoma, in the abdomen and connects the colon to it, a procedure called a colostomy. A bag is attached to collect the stool. Later, a second operation is done to reattach the end of the colon, and remove the colostomy.

After successful treatment for diverticulitis, your doctor normally will recommend a high-fiber diet. Later, you may need to have a procedure called a colonoscopy, which is an internal examination of the colon.

In general, surgery is not recommended after only one or even two attacks without complications. However, it is usually recommended after a third episode occurs in the same location within the colon.

Repeated episodes of diverticulitis can lead to internal scarring and

narrowing of the colon, which also may require surgery to remove a piece of the colon.

When to call a professional

Call your doctor if abdominal pain in one spot lasts for longer than a few hours, especially if it becomes worse or is accompanied by fever.

Prognosis

With proper treatment and a highfiber diet, the outlook for people with diverticulosis and uncomplicated diverticulitis is excellent. Most people with diverticulosis never have symptoms.

People who have diverticulitis usually improve within two to four days after treatment begins. Over 85% of patients recover with bed rest and liquid diet, with or without antibiotics. Most never have a second episode of diverticulitis.

The prognosis varies if complications develop and is particularly serious in the case of peritonitis.

About 90% of people who have a colon resection do not have symptoms return after the surgery.

WE PAY OUR RESPECTS TO OUR FALLEN HEROES

Deputy Sheriff Brandon Ray Sikes

Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, GA

6-year veteran

Deputy Sheriff Brandon Sikes was shot and killed during an attempted traffic stop just before exit 194 on Interstate 20, near Augusta, at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Deputy Sikes and three other deputies were serving a domestic violence protective order on the subject. At first, the man was compliant and non-threatening, but when deputies turned away, he fired at them with a 9mm AR Pistol. Deputy Sikes was mortally wounded. Another deputy was shot in the face. Two deputies returned fire. One of the deputies gathered the injured deputy through a barrage of gunfire and transported him to the hospital, where he is in critical condition. The suspect attempted to flee in his camper but was stopped on the highway. Hours later, drones found the suspect dead inside his camper with pipe bombs, firearms, and ammunition.

Deputy Sikes was a United States Army veteran and had served with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office for over six years. He is survived by his wife, who also serves with the agency, a daughter, parents, three brothers, nieces, and a nephew.

Firefighter/Medic Graham Hoffman

Kansas City Fire Department, MO

3-year veteran

Firefighter/Medic Graham Hoffman was stabbed in the chest by a patient he was transporting to a local hospital. Immediately after the stabbing, additional personnel from the Kansas City, Missouri Fire and Police Departments were dispatched to the scene.

Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department crews worked to save Firefighter/Medic Hoffman’s life while they transported him to North Kansas City Hospital. Lifesaving efforts continued in the hospital emergency room before Firefighter/Medic Hoffman was moved into surgery. Despite all these lifesaving

efforts, Firefighter/Medic Hoffman passed away from the injuries he sustained. The patient who stabbed Firefighter/Medic Hoffman was taken into custody.

Sergeant Grant J. Candies

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, LA 9-year veteran

Sergeant Grant Candies was killed by the driver fleeing a traffic stop on Interstate 10 in Slidell near the Oak Harbor exit.

The driver was driving recklessly without a tag on the car when a deputy attempted to stop the vehicle on Brownswitch Road. When the driver refused to stop and continued to drive at speeds of 85-90 mph while swerving on the roads, a pursuit ensued. Just after midnight, Sergeant Candies was deploying a spike strip to assist with stopping the vehicle pursuit when he was struck and killed by the suspects.

The suspects, all juveniles, continued to evade St. Tammany Parish deputies on Interstate 10 into Orleans Parish, where their vehicle crashed into a New Orleans Police Department unit near Crowder Boulevard at approximately 12:30 a.m. All suspects were apprehended, and the driver was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and aggravated flight. Two other juveniles have been charged with first-degree murder and attempted firstdegree murder.

The New Orleans Police Department officer in the unit struck by the suspects was injured but was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released from the hospital.

Sergeant Candies was a United States Marine Corps veteran and had served with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office for nine years. In 2023, he saved two lives and was named St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputy of the Year. He is survived by his wife, two children, mother, father, three sisters, and a brother.

A short time later a mayday was declared and Firefighter John “JR” R. Gaudet was rescued from the debris. Two other firefighters were also injured at the scene. All three were immediately transported to the UHS Wilson Medical Center where Firefighter Gaudet was pronounced deceased. The two other firefighters were treated and released.

Special Deputy Sheriff Larry Henderson, Jr.

Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, OH 33-year veteran

Special Deputy Sheriff Larry Henderson was intentionally struck and killed by a driver while directing traffic at the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive and Burnett Woods Drive in Cincinnati.

At 1:00 p.m., Deputy Henderson was providing traffic control and monitoring the traffic signal box near the University of Cincinnati for their commencement ceremonies. While standing on the sidewalk, a driver deliberately drove his vehicle into Deputy Henderson. Deputy Henderson was transported to the UC Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver, who had recently viewed body camera footage of his son being shot and killed after fleeing a stolen vehicle armed with a handgun, was arrested and charged with aggravated murder.

Deputy Henderson was a United States Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office for 33 years. He is survived by his wife and five children. Two of Deputy Henderson’s uncles and four cousins also served in law enforcement.

Food for Thought... forSummer

Mango Cucumber Avocado

Ingredients:

2 ripe mangos, diced

1 cucumber, diced

1 avocado, diced

¼ red onion, thinly sliced

¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped

Juice of 1 lime

1 tablespoon olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

Combine mango, cucumber, avocado, and red onion in a bowl.

Drizzle with lime juice and olive oil.

Add chopped cilantro, salt, pepper, and chili flakes (if using).

Gently toss to combine.

Serve immediately or chill for 10–15 minutes for extra freshness.

Why its perfect for Summer:

Sweet, tangy, and creamy with a refreshing crunch

No dairy—light and gut-friendly

BBQ Beef

Ingredients:

1 cup water

1 cup ketchup

Ribs Salad

Optional: pinch of chili flakes or Tajín for a kick

Great as a side dish, dip with chips, or even as a taco topper

1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste

¾ cup brown sugar

½ cup vinegar

2 tablespoons prepared mustard

1 tablespoon salt

2 pounds beef back ribs

Instructions:

Mix water, ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, vinegar, mustard, and salt in a slow cooker, stirring to dissolve brown sugar and salt.

Place short ribs into the sauce and stir to coat. Set cooker on low, cover, and cook for 8 hours .

Why its perfect for Summer:

Summer is peak BBQ season, and ribs soaked in tangy, sweet, or spicy sauce hit the spot. The smoky, charred flavor pairs perfectly with warm weather and backyard gatherings.

MISCELLANEOUS Various Kinds of Things

April Fools’ Day fun from local law enforcement

Local law enforcement are having a little fun in honor of April Fools Day.

The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office is offering donut pay for minor traffic violations. Speeding will cost you two glazed donuts and one jelly-filled donut, while failure to signal can be a sprinkled apology.

Meanwhile, the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office posted on social media that all crime will be outlawed between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. so deputies can take a nap and stay vigilant.

“We could all have good, kindhearted fun without ruining people’s actual day. A five-minute laugh is better than a 24-hour cry.”

And the Henry County Sheriff’s Office is ruffling feathers with a new goose patrol unit to help control a rise in the territorial birds. Training tactics will include honk interpretation and evasive waddling. https://www.wsls.com/news/local/2025/04/01/watch-april-fools-day-fun-fromlocal-law-enforcement/?utm_source=chatgpt.com

Man tries to assemble stolen electric scooter in front of Target

A man in Florida was dubbed by a sheriff’s office as the “dumb criminal of the week” after he was caught trying to assemble a stolen electric Razor scooter in front of the Target he is accused of stealing it from.

According to the Flagler County Sherriff’s Office, the man was witnessed walking past cashiers and out Target’s front door without paying for the scooter worth $539.99.

Officials say that instead of fleeing the scene of the

crime the man stopped on the sidewalk in front of the store and started assembling the scooter. A responding deputy caught the man before he could finish assembling it and gave him a ride to jail.

“This dumb criminal of the week must have thought he was in another state or city where it’s okay to walk into a store and steal what you want and not face any consequences,” said Sheriff Rick Staly on Facebook.“He didn’t get to ride ‘his’ Razor but he did get a free ride to the Green Roof Inn in the backseat of a patrol car!”

According to officials, drugs were found on the man. He was taken to jail and charged with petit theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.

In Lakeway, Texas when a man tried stealing an unmarked police car full of police officers.

Law enforcement was already well aware of the suspect and knew that he loved to steal vehicles. Which is why they were watching him, waiting to see if he was going to attempt to steal another vehicle.

After exiting the residence, the subject approached the unmarked police vehicle and attempted to gain entry into the vehicle. As you would expect the officers jumped into action quickly and after a brief chase the man was arrested.

He is now facing charges which include tampering with evidence and engaging in organized criminal activity.
