ith the year end and the onset of winter, the short days and long nights, makes me reflect on the past year. Have I accomplished my goals and am I proud of what has become of 2015?

I can honestly say that I am. Now I may not have been able to stick to the strict diet and exercise I yearn to keep each and every year, but the accomplishments I have made keep me content of success and that is very important to me. We have had so many wonderful stories this year and my absolute favorite part is being involved in so many of them. I’m very thankful for the Carmel Fire Department for allowing me to take part in their educational and adventurous day with kids of all ages. Even my oldest daughter got to take part in the festivities and she absolutely loved it! I’m also thrilled that I got to visit Vohne Liche Kennels and witness some of the action of these K-9’s in training. It was a wonderful experience for me and I’m so pleased with all the things I have taken in along the way.

I hope everyone is looking forward to the New Year, and remember don’t make resolutions you know you’re not going to keep. It will make you feel better if you set achievable goals. So eat that piece of cake, just eat half and if you only have 15 minutes for a workout, do it because something is always better than nothing.

Because the structure was built as a cold storage warehouse, there were a very limited number of access points for the source of ever increasing smoke conditions.

Lieutenant Kelly Hopkins and Private Al Taylor of Engine Co. 4, Lieutenant Joe Chesek and Private Joe Coronitti of Engine Co. 2 entered the structure.

After searching with no positive result, they decided to exit the building as their air supply was diminishing. As they retreated following a hand line, they discovered that tires had fallen from their storage rack blocking their escape.

As they moved tires out of the way, more tires were falling blocking their path out. Not wanting to leave the security of the hand line, a mayday was transmitted by the crew. As the RIT team was responding from their designated staging point, Chauffeur John Rivers, who was standing by the new entry point, donned his SCBA, tied off some rope and proceeded into the structure.

Rivers called out to the crew and used his hand light in a near zero visibility condition to see if he could locate them. Over a very short distance, Rivers was able to make contact with the trapped crew, now perilously low on air, and lead them out of

the structure to safety.

Close to Home On August 4, 2015 Firefighter Derek Lopez, after working a 24-hour shift, was returning home to be with his wife and two daughters. When he observed smoke in the area, he followed the smoke to a 3 ½ story occupied residential structure. He noticed heavy fire on the 3rd floor/roof area of the structure.

He phoned the alarm in to give the building location and to confirm a working occupied building fire.

He noticed the front door was open and proceeded to the 3rd floor where he encountered two on duty Providence police officers and a heavy smoke condition. He then proceeded to remove four occupants to safety, while descending checking the 2nd and 1st floors. Once outside Firefighter Lopez was informed of an occupant living in the basement so he made his way to the rear of the building where he alerted the occupant and guided him to safety. What a great effort for Firefighter Lopez to help without hesitation to save the occupants.

Kitchen Fire Branford Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a kitchen fire, which more frequently than not, turns out to be a pot on the stove or other minor fire event.

Often you can hear it in the dispatcher’s voice, the slightly more seriousness or excited announcement that says, “You’re going to work”. There was nothing in his voice to indicate to this department that what they were about to face was not routine. Just a little before 4:00 a.m. is a somewhat unusual hour to be cooking so thinking this was continued on page 9 Winter 2015 • The PFIA Protector

The Troy Police Cadet Post 4102 is a not for profit organization overseen by sworn members of the Troy Police Department. The post consists of youth between the ages of 14-21 who have a vested interest in a career in law enforcement, and who volunteer their time to assist the police department in its everyday operations.

The youth attend classes, partake in training and assist the department in both small and large-scale community events. They also ride along with the members of the department. All of these activities are done with the cadets in full uniform. The Troy Police Cadet Post 4102 would like to thank PFIA and Officer Christopher Parker for the generous donation for five new complete uniforms for the five new cadets the police department recently accepted.

On August 24, 2015 the Buffalo Police Benevolent Association hosted its 3rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament at Brierwood Country Club in Hamburg, NY. Proceeds from the tournament were to benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Western New York. Over the last two years the Buffalo PBA was able to present the Ronald McDonald House of WNY with over $11,000. These funds go a long way to help this most valuable organization continue to provide great services to the people of WNY. PFIA purchased two hole sponsorships and donated two gifts for the basket raffle. Pictured below are some of this years participants.

On August 28, 2015, the Newark, NJ Fire Dept. had it’s 18th Annual FF Michael DeLane Day at the Races. Held at Monmouth Park Race Track. This event raises funds for Wounded Warriors, and toys for children in the hospital at Christmas time. PFIA was there as a sponsor. FF Michael DeLane was tragically killed in the line of duty, and this event is held in his honor.

Jim Snyder and Mike Carrigan held their own “Heating up Summer” contest by offering a drawing for a PFIA logo watch to anyone that filled out a free ticket and reviewed their insurance with Jim and Mike. Buffalo, New York police officers giving back to their community.

Buffalo PD Officer Lucia Esquilin (pictured) and Buffalo PD Officer Patrick Baggott of C District are two fine examples of police officers that care about the community they serve and protect everyday. They teamed up with WNY Heroes and a local radio station, WYRK, to help some local veterans families have a Merry Christmas this year for the annual “Adopt-A-Veteran for Christmas 2015” fundraiser.

With the generosity of fellow BPD members and a donation from PFIA, many families of veterans in the western New York area will have a very Merry Christmas this year.

not going to be just a minor kitchen fire. Upon arrival, you could hear a police officer say, “It’s going good!” The threestory multi-family home engulfed with fire on all three floors with four people trapped inside.

Assuming command and doing a 360-degree size-up, the department could see the police officers on scene yelling to three people in the third floor window.

Fire and smoke had already made the first and second floors untenable and was rapidly spreading into the attic. With fire blocking both their stairway and the exterior fire escape, the window was the only way out for the third floor tenants.

The first arriving crews raised a 35’ ladder to the window while simultaneously stretching the first hose line to attack the fire and retake the stairs to the third floor.

With smoke filling the room, the three residents on the third floor struggled not to panic, while police officer’s shouted to reassure them. Firefighter Jeff Kaczynski assisted by Firefighter David Morton ascended the ladder and one by one led them to the ground. At the same time without the benefit of protective equipment, Police Officer Bryan McGinnis kicked open the ground floor door to the second floor stairwell. With smoke obscuring his vision, he found his way to the upper door and pounded on that door. After hearing a voice, he kicked the door open, lay on his belly and shined his light through the thick smoke. This resident having awoke to blinding smoke had rolled to the floor, choking and dizzy he saw Officer

McGinnis’s light and made his way to the stairs where the officer dragged him to safety.

The fire ultimately required a general alarm for Branford, which includes a call back of off duty members, as well as mutual aid from three surrounding communities to bring under control.

(Meritorious Service Awards) With the help of Firefighter John Cudgma, Firefighter Jason Karpovich, Firefighter Ralph Marino, Firefighter Richard Hart, Firefighter Robert Hart, and Sargent John Alves did the work of twenty with no room for error or time to spare.

Thomas LaValley - August 5, 2015 Shreveport Police Department (LA) 4-year veteran Police Officer Thomas LaValley was shot and killed when he and several other officers responded to a domestic violence call involving a man threatening other family members with a gun. When officers arrived at the home in the Queensborough area, the subject opened fire.

Officer LaValley was struck multiple times. He was transported to University Health where he succumbed to his wounds.

The subject fled the scene, but was apprehended the next day. He was also wanted for a shooting that occurred approximately three weeks earlier.

Larry J. Leggio - October 12, 2015 Kansas City Fire Department (MO) 17-year veteran and

John V. Mesh - October 12, 2015 Kansas City Fire Department (MO) 13-year veteran Fire Apparatus Operator Larry J. Leggio and Firefighter John V. Mesh died from injuries sustained in a structural collapse while working at the scene of an apartment building fire.

Multiple units were dispatched on initial calls that indicated fire visible from the structure; additional units were dispatched as the incident escalated, with a full second alarm requested shortly after arrival.

Tactical assignments were made, including establishing a Rapid Intervention Team, and crews began operating to effect fire suppression and occupant rescue, rescuing multiple occupants by ladder prior to deteriorating conditions and forcing a shift to defensive operations.

Evacuation was ordered and hours later, a collapse was reported on the east side of the building. Two mayday calls were received from the collapse area, indicating firefighters in urgent distress; four firefighters were reported trapped by the collapse.

The Rapid Intervention Team witnessed the collapse and held their ground for no more than 10 seconds until command ordered them to effect the rescue.

They located, uncovered and removed several

firefighters from the immediate area. The first ambulance, transporting a firefighter, arrived at Truman Medical Center. A second emergency transport left the scene with both Fire Apparatus Operator Leggio and Firefighter Mesh. They were pronounced dead at the hospital after paramedics, nurses and doctors had attempted to revive them. A third firefighter was transported to University of Kansas Medical Center and a fourth transported non-emergency to St. Luke’s Hospital.

Steven Vincent - August 24, 2015 Louisiana State Police (LA) 24-year veteran Senior Trooper Steven Vincent was shot and killed while checking on a vehicle that was being operated by a suspected intoxicated driver.

Trooper Vincent was on patrol when he spotted a vehicle from a previous reckless driving report. The vehicle in question had driven off the road and was stuck in a ditch. Trooper Vincent approached the vehicle and began speaking with the occupant and then ordered him to exit the vehicle. The male exited the vehicle with a sawed off shotgun in his hand and opened fire, striking Trooper Vincent in the head.

The man then taunted Trooper Vincent as he lay on the ground mortally wounded.

A passing motorist witnessed the incident, stopped his vehicle and tackled the subject. He then wrestled the shotgun away from the man while additional civilians stopped to assist, utilized Trooper Vincent’s handcuffs to cuff and take the subject into custody.

They then called for assistance and rendered aid to Trooper Vincent.

Trooper Vincent was taken to Lake Charles Hospital where he died the next day from his wounds.

Chad H. Wolf - August 28, 2015 Michigan State Police (MI) 7-year veteran Trooper Chad Wolf was killed when a vehicle struck his motorcycle.

Trooper Wolf was on motorcycle patrol and traveling northbound in the right lane of the highway, when a vehicle towing an empty trailer traveling in the left lane quickly changed lanes in an attempt to access the entrance ramp. As the vehicle changed lanes, it struck Trooper Wolf’s motorcycle. Trooper Wolf was dragged for several miles before the driver pulled over at a rest area.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Trooper Wolf cooperated with the investigation and was released without charges.

Darren H. Goforth - August 28, 2015 Harris County Sheriff’s Office (TX) 10-year veteran Deputy Sheriff Darren Goforth was shot and killed from ambush while pumping gas into his patrol car at a commercial gas station.

Deputy Goforth was on patrol and had completed an assignment at the scene of a vehicle collision. He went to a local gas station to fuel his patrol car. As Deputy Goforth stood next to his patrol car filling it with fuel, a male subject walked up behind him and fired multiple shots. After Deputy Goforth fell to the ground, the subject shot him several more times before fleeing the scene in a pickup truck.

The subject was apprehended the next day following a massive manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies from around the Harris County and Houston area. He was charged with capital murder. continued on next page

The subject was arrested by the other Marlin police officer and a Temple Police Department officer took the man into custody.

Chief Allen was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hospital where he remained until succumbing to the wound on November 10, 2015.

Dennis Rodeman - September 9, 2015 Lansing Fire Department (MI) 7-year veteran Lansing Firefighter Dennis Rodeman died from injuries when he was hit by a truck while collecting donations for a “Fill the Boot” fundraiser for muscular dystrophy. Lansing police say Rodeman had some sort of confrontation with the man in a truck. The truck drove off then circled back and hit Rodeman. Rodeman was transported to Sparrow Hospital where he passed away from the injuries he sustained in the collision. A 22-year-old suspect is being held on charges of leaving the scene, fleeing, and eluding.

Darrell Allen - November 10, 2015 Marlin Police Department (TX) 21-year veteran Chief of Police Darrell Allen succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained 10 days earlier while struggling with a subject inside of a club in Temple, Texas.

Chief Allen and another Marlin Police Department officer were working a secondary employment assignment at the club when Chief Allen attempted to arrest a subject for creating a disturbance. The man produced a handgun and shot Chief Allen in the face as the two struggled.

n June 7, 2015 firefighters from Rhode Island and Massachusetts participated in a 5K-road race at Slater Park in Pawtucket, RI. This event was in the honor of Marine Kyle Coutu, who was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom.

What made this 5K unique was the fact that all the firefighters wore full protective clothing and self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) while participating in the road race. The firefighters decided to show support to Kyle and all our troops who have to wear their equipment and body armor in temperatures of sometimes 100+ degrees to protect our freedom. A member of the Providence, RI Police Department and a marine, played the bagpipes at the start of the race. A friendly competition was developed between all the firefighters to see who could last the greatest amount of time while breathing from their SCBA before it ran completely out. The winner lasted 40 minutes and 39 seconds. It was a wonderful day for a great cause while enjoying the camaraderie of brother firefighters and honoring one of our local marines.

A Long Walk for

Whatever it takes, David Roth ’91 will be ready to walk across the country to help raise money for veterans and their families. It doesn’t matter if it means training in the ring with a former heavyweight boxing champion, dropping almost 50 pounds so far, or striding long past the time his legs grow sore, Roth will be prepared, come April, to walk more than 3,000 miles.

It’s all part of Route for the Brave, a fundraising walk Roth’s undertaking in his role as the board chair of Helping Hands for Freedom, an organization that serves wounded veterans and their families as well as the families of fallen military personnel.

The walk will help raise money to build a retreat home aimed at helping veterans to recuperate from PTSD and reacclimate to civilian life alongside their families.

“How do we get that message out? I came up with the idea of using U.S. Route 40, which is basically the route that built America,” Roth says. “I’m a regular guy who wasn’t in the best shape last November, but I’m doing this to get out and meet people and share our story.”

Inspired to End Suffering Although not a veteran himself, Roth was a natural fit when he joined Helping Hands for Freedom as board chair in 2013.

He knows plenty of veterans — family, members, friends, and members of the Indianapolis Metro Police Department, where he works as a detective. He also has extensive fundraising experience, having worked for 16

years as a representative of the Police and Firemen's Insurance Association, which assists families of officers and firefighters who’ve died, been injured, or fallen ill.

Stories of veterans’ and military families’ suffering moved Roth to organize and undertake this grueling cross-country hike. Some are close to home. After a stepson returned from deployment, Roth helped him readjust to life as a family man.

Others are close to his old police beat, where he met a war widow and her children, one of whom has down syndrome, living in a dilapidated van. Although help was available, the woman had trouble filling out forms to get assistance.

Roth and his colleagues helped her with paperwork and got her children enrolled in school. They collected donations and helped set the family up in an apartment.

“When you experience that, how long would you walk?” Roth asks. “Those stories inspire me so much.”

Building a Retreat For Veterans, Families Stories like that have Roth and his colleagues eager to do something big for veterans and their families.

That’s where the retreat house comes in. The idea, Roth says, is to create a safe space for PTSDstricken veterans to readjust to civilian life with their families.

“We want them to be in a place where they can get away, get counseling, and where they know they can get help,” he says.

The upcoming walk will raise money for the house, and Helping Hands for Freedom hopes to attract a big donor to help fund

the project. The group hasn’t chosen a location but is considering potential sites in Indiana, Kentucky, and Arizona, Roth says. The property may include space for horseback riding and other animal therapy as well as provide families with access to trained counselors.

“I’m just looking to create one retreat home where we have relationships with psychologists, with business people,” Roth says.

“We have the specialists that can come in there and give their time.

It’s a getaway where people can sit down and talk. How about the family sitting down with the soldier? And having dad or mom explain what they went through and why they do what they do.

We want that place to be a retreat where people can come together.

Until you feel you’re part of a healing process, it’s hard to let go of those events that have happened to you.”

Training to Walk Across the Country The walk will raise money and awareness for the house. The undertaking has required a great deal of preparation from Roth, who weighed 287 pounds just a year ago. Since then, he’s dropped 47 pounds, thanks partly to workouts with former heavyweight boxing champion Lamon Brewster. A mix of sparring, circuit training, eating better, and plenty of walking has helped him get in shape for the long hike.

The walk, from Atlantic City to San Francisco between April 28 and August 26, will require Roth, who’s 47, to walk 28 miles a day, six days a week, starting at about 5:30 a.m. and ending around 2:30

p.m. That leaves time to meet with families and veterans’ organizations and engage local media for publicity.

Roth is taking a leave of absence from his job for the walk. He considers it an opportunity to fulfill the aspirations for public service he gained as a student at Notre Dame, where he majored in sociology and did service work for the Center for Social Concerns.

Earlier this year, he walked across Indiana to help raise money for Helping Hands for Freedom, a warm-up for the cross-country hike.

“The interest snowballed,” he says. “Grants started coming in.

People were watching and along that walk, I was able to help some families. I was so inspired that it didn’t matter what was going to happen or how sore I was. I had such a sense of fulfillment.”

A Chronicle of Carriages The Presidential Motorcade

The image of the presidential motorcade is one of the most commonly recognizable symbols of Secret Service protection. But sleek, black limousines with darkened windows and advanced security elements were not always features of the presidential limousine.

Horse and Carriages - 1906 The Secret Service initially used horses and carriages, but these were gradually phased out when the automobile became the preferred mode of transportation in the early 20th century.

1939 Lincoln “Sunshine Special”– were armorplated in the early part of 1942.

Railroad Horse Car - 1944

Packard Touring Limo - 1936 1936 Packard Touring Limo - A 1936 Packard Touring Limousine was used by President Franklin D. Roosevelt while visiting New York City on June 30, 1938.

Advent of the Armored Limo - 1941

Before utilizing today’s methods of transporting vehicles for protective visits by airplane, in the old days, the President’s limousine and follow-up vehicles were driven across the country for use upon the President’s arrival. Soon however, the agency realized that the distance needed to transport each vehicle produced wear and tear on the vehicles as well as driver fatigue, so the search for alternative means of transportation kicked into full gear. Beginning in 1944, the Secret Service transported motorcade vehicles using a revamped railroad horse car that could hold four automobiles. It was fitted with portable ramps so that the vehicles could be loaded on and off the railroad car quickly. The railway car was also equipped with water tanks to wash the cars en route and held racks for extra tires and accessories for emergency maintenance. For overseas destinations, the vehicles were loaded aboard ships.

President Dwight Eisenhower - 1955 With the United States’ entry into World War II, the Secret Service increased its protective web around the President.

In December 1941, Franklin Roosevelt became the first President to use an armored vehicle. Originally belonging to infamous gangster Al Capone, the car was seized by the Treasury Department in 1932 on an income-tax evasion charge. The car’s armor actually was comprised of only bulletproof glass; the body of the car was still vulnerable. The vehicle was used until limousines in the presidential fleet – such as the

President Dwight Eisenhower rode in a 1955 Chrysler Crown Imperial during a visit to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on November 14, 1955. Equipped with a sunroof, the limousine was powered by a 250 horsepower version of Chrysler’s famed “hemi” V-8, an engine later favored by drag racers.

President John F. Kennedy - 1963

President John F. Kennedy traveled in his 1961 Lincoln Continental Limousine during a visit to San Diego, California on June 6, 1963. The limousine included a series of removable steel and transparent plastic roof panels that could be installed in various combinations. It also contained a hydraulically operated seat, which could be raised 10 ½ inches to give the gathered crowds a better view of President Kennedy and his fellow passengers. After President Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, the entire vehicle was armored and returned to the Secret Service in May 1964. The finished product weighed about one ton more than the original weight of 7,800 pounds.

Air Travel - 1965 In the 1960s, air travel began to provide the Secret Service a much more convenient and effective means of transportation. Official vehicles were able to be loaded aboard aircraft to destinations in advance of protective visits.

President Ronald Reagan - 1981 Credit: U.S. Secret Service The 1972 Lincoln Parade Limousine was used by President Ronald Reagan on Inauguration Day, January 20, 1981. In the aftermath of the assassination attempt on President Reagan on March 30, 1981, the vehicle was returned to the Ford Motor Company for refurbishing. President George W. Bush - 2005 On Inauguration Day 2005, President George W. Bush rode in a 2006 Cadillac DeVille Touring Sedan (DTS).

The limousine actually was a refurbished 2005 model that gave the appearance of the 2006 Cadillac, available to the general public. The vehicle was wider, longer and taller than its predecessor.

President Barack Obama - 2009 President Barack Obama travels in a 2009 customized DTS Cadillac that was in production for two years prior to being unveiled on Inauguration Day. Slightly more upright than its predecessor, the vehicle features 19.5-inch wheels and enough room for five seated passengers. The interior is ornate, complete with a foldout desk for the President. The limousine is designed to Secret Service specifications, which includes a heavy duty chassis, extended length and armored material, and offers the President secure communications with encrypted measures.

At the time, the Assistant Director for the Office of Protective Operations noted, “It is safe to say that this car’s security and coded communications systems make it the most technologically advanced protection vehicle in the world.”

The Future - 2015 The Secret Service continues to be responsible for procuring, driving, maintaining and securing the vehicles at all times. Each vehicle is outfitted with a variety of equipment to provide the protectors with a secure environment throughout the entire trip. As the agency has adapted its protective and investigative responsibilities to keep pace with evolving security needs, the Presidents’ limousines too have changed over the years to reflect the tastes, needs and security considerations of each generation.

From 2010 to 2014 there has been a shocking amount of 742 law enforcement officer deaths in the United States (www.odmp.org). The number one cause of death is gunfire. The murder rate of these officers fluctuates from year to year approximating the total percentage amount of the five years starting in 2010 at 24%, 2011 at 25%, 2012 at 18%, 2013 at 16% and 2014 at 18%.

As time passes, the news will continuously show the rewards of being an officer, but will also show the tragic events that can take place in an officer’s life.

I have personally viewed on social media, officers pulling people over to give them gifts, dancing in the projects and playing football with underprivileged children, just to name a few. There are also times I have watched the heart wrenching stories of criminals killing officers. I can’t help but to ask, “Why?” What reason could someone have to possibly open fire on an officer?” Is it because they don’t want to get caught that day or they’re not ready to go to jail? Do they not realize that each and every day service men and women put their lives on the line to protect lives of others?

Growing up with a parent in law enforcement definitely has its advantages and disadvantages, according to some of our PFIA agents, which have long lines of law enforcement family history.

Some of the advantages of being a LEO’s (Law Enforcement Officer) child is living in a strict household. These days, in my opinion, many kids lack the desire to achieve and have negative influences.

Now not all LEO’s are extremely strict, according to Tanya Young of Fort Worth, Texas, you

either followed the rules or else. Her father was in law enforcement for 42 years, as well as her brother and husband. If you think about it, no parent wants his or her child to be a troublemaker, especially if you are one that enforces the law. Tonya mentions the proud moment when her father became the Chief of Police and when her husband became a hero for saving triplets. Some people live for moments like this, only a select few get to live it every day.

I couldn’t even imagine the popularity that comes with being a LEO’s child.

Tonya mentions having CRX on her license plate, this let everyone know she was a child of an officer.

There’s just something about that select few in a uniform who put their lives on the line while saving lives.

Currently, with social media, it’s a huge deal and goes viral quite frequently.

Jeff Tomovcsik, of McKeesport, Pennsylvania Fire Department, says he didn’t really live in a strict police household, but also says he has never even considered using drugs. I really believe that it’s good for kids not to be sheltered from all the negative things that happen in the world. My family watches Cops and Investigation Discovery. I figure if my girls witness the bad things that can happen, then maybe, just maybe they will look back and remember seeing the show and think before they act. The most amazing feeling in the world, according to many LEO’s, whether it’s assisting or influencing someone, is seeing the impact imprinted on children’s lives. Jeff recalls being in grade school; his father was a police officer who came to talk with his class about strangers and drugs. I’m sure the other kids thought, “Wow, someone who catches the bad guys, how brave and heroic they must be.” I bet you could

definitely see the expression of pride upon Jeff’s face. However, this also invoked the envy of some of the other kids. But that didn’t bother Jeff. He stated, “All the kids knew my parent was in law enforcement, I thought it was pretty cool, even if some of them didn’t”. Everyone wants to hear the miraculous reports and details of the law. I know I love hearing all the heart-felt stories that officers share with their community.

Although there are many rewards being a law enforcement officer, there are disadvantages also. These men and women risk their lives every day, some don’t make it home to their families. In addition, the amount of stress related to the job is excessive and can take a toll on their health.

Imagine going to your job each and every day, wondering if today was your last. When you deal with so many criminals and evil people daily, you’re bound and determined to run into the one that could possibly take your life.

You know what’s out there; you know what people are capable of, yet you go on because it’s your job.

Can you imagine seeing the murder of an innocent child or entering a house that was set fire by an arsonist, killing an entire family? Those things could haunt a person for the rest of their lives. Many people don’t realize what these LEO’s endure and how these things affect their lives.

Overall though, being a child of a law enforcement officer, although scary at times, is rewarding and satisfying. As Tonya and Jeff would agree, the influence it had is worth it. Both of these individuals grew up knowing they wanted to be a public servant, not only to help people but also to try and change the world, helping others, one person at a time.

Dependent children are defined as natural or legally adopted children or stepchildren living in the member’s household or primarily supported by the member. W

e are proud to announce Bradd Roembke as our National Sales Director for Police and Firemen’s Insurance Association.

Bradd is a 1987 graduate from Ball State University.

After graduation Bradd started working for Tony Matthews Concrete Company, which was a friend of the family. Tony was also an Indianapolis firefighter. It was Tony and his brother, Greg Roembke (retired Captain on the Indianapolis Fire Department), who encouraged him to pursue a career as a firefighter. In 1988 Bradd joined the Indianapolis Fire Department and was a dedicated fireman for 25 years.

During his career as a firefighter, he worked at the Firefighters Credit Union as a loan and collections officer from 1990 to 1999. He then served as the credit unions board of directors from 2000-2002.

In 1999, Dave Brunner hired Bradd as an Account Representative for the Indianapolis area fire departments.

He became account representative of the year in 2000, and qualified for 13 consecutive National Sales Conventions; he also represented Indianapolis at 4 Supreme Legislative Body meetings and served on many committees. His hard work and dedication gained him a promotion to Regional Manager in 2013.

Bradd and his wife Leigh Ann have 6 children: Nick (22), Matt (21), Zach (20), Samantha (18), Peyton (18), Ryan (15). He also has one awesome Granddaughter, Karsen (2) “I have dedicated the past 15 years to enhancing the lives of Indianapolis firefighters by providing them the products offered by PFIA. I believe there is no other insurance company that is as concerned with the welfare of its members as we are. One Saturday in June of this year, Denver Police District 1 Officer Bret Lane was dispatched on a report of a theft. The complainant was an 89-year-old military veteran named Fred. Fred explained to Officer Lane that his lawn mower was missing and suspected the neighbor’s grandson. Officer Lane talked with Fred then took a look around, and found two broken down mowers in the severely overgrown lawn. The officer took a report, then contacted Officer Ben Austin and Officer Manny Gomez. Together, the three officers responded back to Fred’s home after the end of their shifts. With their personal lawn mowers and trimmers in tow, the three officers cut down the three-foot tall weeds, and brought Fred’s yard back to a manageable state in just three short hours.

Now Fred has a new mower, and thanks to the officers’ help he can better manage his lawn!

Meritorious Service Award Heroic Action

Engines 4, 8, Truck 2, Rescue 1, and Car 21 (command vehicle) were dispatched in Scranton, Pennsylvania for a reported structure fire.

Rescue 1 requested a second alarm minutes later due to the large volume of smoke and fire visible while en route. The second

alarm brought Engines 10, 2, and 7 from Scranton and Ladder 6 from neighboring Dunmore Borough effectively stripping the city and Dunmore of fire coverage. Crews were greeted with a 3 1/2-story rooming house (approximately 20 residents) with heavy fire and smoke on the third floor and reports of entrapment. Rescue 1 (Lt. Dave Applegate, Chauffeur Don Chesek, and Pvt. Nick Azzarelli) was first on scene and attempted a primary search while other companies continued to arrive on scene. As Engine 4 (Lt. Kelly Hopkins, Pvt. Jack Davis, and Pvt. Tom Pattison & A.J. Samuel) arrived, they found an occupant in a third floor window. Assisted by Car 21, Chauffeur Gary Hughes, the crews quickly raised a ground ladder to the second floor. Lt. Hopkins traversed a small section of roof and used a roof ladder to make access to the third floor window and was able to rescue the trapped occupant with only seconds to spare and the fire was now beginning to engulf the room. Crews shortly thereafter had to evacuate the structure as it had become compromised due to fire damage. The

last companies cleared the scene at 8:00 a.m. the following morning.

Troubled Mother

The North Haven dispatch center received a report of a woman walking in the middle of the road, despondent over the recent death of her son. The woman told people she was going to visit him. When officers responded, the woman fled prior to their arrival. A K-9 track was initiated in an attempt to locate the woman before she had an opportunity to harm herself. Officers located the woman near the railroad tracks and attempted to make contact with her. She displayed a black handgun and began to point it in the direction of the officers telling them to shoot her as they commanded her to lower her weapon. She began walking away from the officers to a more populated area. One officer holstered his weapon, transitioned to his taser, and was able to avoid using deadly force by disarming the woman when she fell to the ground without injury. The officers learned the firearm she was carrying was an airsoft pistol along with two large knives. She was later transported to an area hospital to receive treatment for mental health.

Sergeant Christopher Thorpe, Officer John Gaspar, Officer Jim Brennen, and Officer Jason Janosko did a tremendous job resolving this situation without deadly force and obtained help for this troubled suspect.
