Mokha Laget: Color Walk July 5 – 31, 2013

Mokha Laget Mokha Laget was born in Algeria and spent her early life in North Africa, France, and the United States. Of the kind of cultural integration acquired by those who spend time abroad, Laget has said “as I travel from country to country, I am gathering color, texture and design ideas. What eventually evolves into a piece of art has been influenced by this collage of life.”

In the 1990s Laget moved to the Southwest and her painting style, accordingly, was impacted by the region’s striking color and dazzling light. Pure, resonant, and rich colors populate her latest paintings, which are balanced with angular elements that simultaneously divide and unite the compositions. Describing her work, Laget says it “pushes the boundaries of complex relations between color and composition.”

Indeed, her use of vivid color, coupled with the often monumental scale of her canvases, generates a heightened kind of architectural drama, allowing her to convincingly advocate for a relationship between interior and exterior spaces—a convergence that sumptuously succeeds thanks to Laget’s ability to explore apparently opposing forces.

Her educational background includes coursework in philosophy and anthropology, a Bachelor in Fine Arts from the Corcoran School of Art, a postgraduate degree from the School of Linguistics at Georgetown University, and graduate work in Museum Studies from UC Hayward. She has exhibited widely in national settings as well as in Europe, worked as an independent curator, is a published translator and poet.
