About “The Teacher Trainer”

The Teacher Trainer is a practical journal for those involved English and modern language teacher training, teaching and training subjects through the medium of English and teaching and training in wider education fields. Whether you are a teacher who tends to be asked questions by others in the staff room, a Director of studies/head of department, a mentor or supervisor, an inspector going out to schools or a teacher educator at a university or you do all this online or in blended/ hybrid ways – which is most likely today – this journal is for you. Our aim is to provide a forum for ideas, information and news, to encourage collaboration and innovation between professionals and to understand how trainers in other fields operate and to continually learn from each other.

I am delighted to welcome you to the relaunched The Teacher Trainer journal. I am the new editor and if I can approach anywhere near the professionalism and standards set by Tessa Woodward, Seth Lindstromberg and Marian Nicholson over 35+ years I will be very pleased indeed. In these 35 years The Teacher Trainer has had a unique and high reputation for excellence as a voice of teacher education communities with a geographical spread representing published contributions from authors based in the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Macedonia, Malaysia, Malta, New Zealand, Norway, Palestine, Singapore, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, Turkey, USA, UK, Vietnam and Wales. It has taken quite some time to set up a new system with a new website and a new look that identifies closely with the Pilgrims and our sister magazine https://www.hltmag.co.uk/. I am pleased to say, though, that we are back and will continue to be an important voice for the teacher education community in English and wider education.

New times, though, require new approaches and innovations as we move forward as Pilgrims and as a teacher education community. Pilgrims has always been about innovation and breaking new ground as we explore what we can mean by humanistic approaches in teaching, learning and training.

As this is a first relaunch of the journal we are offering it for free for everyone so you can see how it will look now before you decide to subscribe – which, of course, we hope you will. The journal will now be digital only and subscription information will be available very soon on the website. We intend and aim for The Teacher Trainer to engage fully with new innovations in teaching and learning through our website, social media and linking up directly with a whole range of global teacher education communities through discussion and interaction. As we all know, the pandemic has changed how we interact and we will contribute to all the new innovations and approaches in teacher education. As well as articles from contributors across the teacher education field we will have special features in terms of classroom practice, conference reports, current research, training around the world interviews, trainer education voices, books that have influenced us, articles and ideas that are inspirational and much more. However these are only headings and we welcome contributions that do not fit neatly into these categories. If you would like to contribute to the journal or if you have any questions at all, please do get in touch via the website The Teacher Trainer Journal or directly to me phil.dexter@pilgrimsttj. com. Guidelines for contributors are on the website and also included in this edition.

The purpose of The Teacher Trainer remains as before, to reflect the authentic voice of teacher educators across the word representing the best of the diversity and good practice of our different teaching contexts. The current archive, which will be freely available, includes all issues in editions 33 and 34 that were produced, an index of articles from 2016, and a link to a number of back articles. We intend to have a full archive available as soon as possible. We recognise there has been a break with some issues in 2020 but please be assured that everyone will be able to access all our content.

I hope you enjoy this first new edition and I look forward to hearing from you as both a reader/subscriber and a contributor.

choice, in line with the zeitgeist of our times.

Welcome from Pilgrims

Welcome to the Teacher Trainer Journal. You will notice a few changes to the journal, which has been published since way back in 1986 and was in the expert hands of the previous editor and administrator, Tessa Woodward and Marian Nicholson. We salute Tessa and Marian’s unflinching dedication to shaping the journal into such a cutting-edge, unique publication in the field. On behalf of the great Pilgrims family we extend our warmest welcome to the new editor, Phil Dexter. I have no doubts whatsoever the journal will be in equally expert hands with Phil at its helm. What will remain unchanged is the journal’s renewed commitment to providing a forum for the various voices in all aspects of teacher education. These are very trying times, and I’m confident the TTJ will seek to understand the new landscape and continue to provide the reader with a broad range of articles that draw from teacher educators’ research and practice. Thank you for your patience and we hope you will enjoy the new TTJ.
