Take this lovely circular five mile walk with your best furry friend which leads you from Sandscale Haws Nature Reserve to Roan Head beach. There are fabulous views of the Duddon Estuary and the Lake District Fells. The beach is dog-friendly although it is advisable to keep your dog on a lead in areas within the National Trust Sandscale Haws Nature Reserve with its wealth of wildlife and over 600 wild plants. Park in the National Trust car park at Roanhead.

Festive Treats

An easy-to-follow festive recipe that your dog is sure to love!

Cranberry Biscuits (Canine Approved)

These treats are simple to make and will delight your dog…

Ingredients (Makes roughly 12 treats)

Directions 01

Preheat your oven to 350°F/180°C/160° Fan/Gas Mark 4.

Line a baking sheet with greaseproof paper.

Blitz the rolled oats in a food processor until the texture resembles flour.

In a mixing bowl, combine the egg and apple sauce.

Add in your oat flour and mix until the dough comes together.

Add the cranberries and mix until they’re evenly distributed.

Flour your work surface and roll out the dough until it’s about 1cm thick.

Cut out shapes using your favourite festive cookie cutters. Gather any scraps, re-roll, and keep cutting until you’ve used up all the dough.

Place the cookies on your prepared baking tray.

Bake for 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

What’s so special to you about Many Tears Animal Rescue Centre?

At the moment, I’m on tour with my best friend Joanne for our podcast “My Therapist Ghosted Me”, preparing for my “Spencer and Vogue” tour next year, as well as working on my brand Bare by Vogue.

When did you get Bertie and what made you fall in love?

Many Tears are amazing. They do an incredible job helping so many dogs. I love following them (on Instagram) and seeing how they rehome dogs in the most amazing places.

What life lessons have Bertie and Winnie taught you?

I had been looking on the Many Tears rescue site for six months, I just wanted every single dog that they posted. I’d lost out on a one-year-old French Bulldog but then they sent me a picture of Bertie. I thought he was a perfect puppy, and great for the kids to help them use up their energy!

How does Bertie get on with Theodore, Gigi and Otto?

He’s really good around the kids - he’s obsessed with them, they play on the trampoline together, get up to mischief, and Otto has learned to be more gentle with Bertie.

To be super selfless. I got Winnie before I had kids which taught me there’s a lot that goes into looking after a dog. I think that people aren’t always aware quite how time-consuming they are. But it’s also the most rewarding thing because they’re just such amazing animals, and nobody will ever be as excited as they are when you walk through the door!

How does he get on with Winston (Winnie), your other dog?

They’re finally getting on! They play-fight a lot, Bertie runs after Winnie in the park, and now that they love each other it’s nice for Winnie to have some dog company - although they are never really alone with our busy household!

What do you feel strongly about with regard to animal welfare?

Be really, really sure you understand the commitment, training and work required before getting a dog, and know that it’s not going to be plain sailing. I think it’s sad when people forget that and then give them away. You need to be careful when deciding and always adopt because there are so many dogs out there that need wonderful homes.
