Researchers spend a lot of time exploring this human-animal interaction. But the concept might have been laughable not too long ago when animals were there for purely utilitarian purposes like guarding the premises or catching pests. While, by and large, they don’t have to do that anymore, why are they still sleeping in our homes, eating our food and why do we grieve for them when they pass on?

For one, when we name them, they become individuals, not things. Another, it seems our empathy with animals evolved over the millennials into what is now a desire for pets. Yup, it appears that pet ownership is a basic part of our genetic code.

John Bradshaw, an authority on the relationship between humans and animals wrote “The Animals Among Us” back in 2017. In it, he debunked the notion that keeping a pet can benefit the owner’s health. It seems there are a couple of problems with these claims.

For one, there are a similar number of studies that suggest that pets have no or even a slight negative impact on health. Another, pet owners don’t necessarily live any longer than those who have never even entertained the notion of having an animal living under the same roof.

The latest theory thrown into the exchange suggests genetics: That genes that promote pet-keeping may be unique to humans.

But they are not universal. Somewhere in the past some societies or individuals, thrived due to an instinctive rapport with animals.

Pet-keeping is an intrinsic part of what makes us, us (humans).

Pet owners should not put face coverings on pets as this could cause harm. In addition, the CDC states: “Do not wipe or bathe your pet with chemical disinfectants, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or any other products not approved for animal use.”

Can Dogs Sniff Out Covid-19?

What You Need To Know Atlanta, Georgia, USA: Treat pets as you would other human family members – do not let pets interact with people outside the household. In addition, if a person inside the household becomes sick, isolate that person from everyone else, including pets.

The latest advisory from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquartered in Georgia, USA, on 28 June 2020, notes that a small number of pets worldwide, including cats and dogs, have been infected with the virus, mostly after close contact with people with Covid-19.

While it appears that the virus can spread from people to animals in some situations, the risk of animals spreading Covid-19 to people is considered to be low. As such, the CDC recommends that pet owners limit their pet’s interaction with people outside their household.

For cat owners, the advice is to keep them indoors when possible and do not let them roam freely outside.

When walking dogs keep them on a leash at least two meters away from others and avoid

Covid-19 & Pets:

Philadelphia, USA: Researchers are enlisting all the help they can get, including the use of dogs, to test and screen for the Covid-19 virus.

A pilot training programme utilising scent detection dogs has been the focus of a research initiative at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) in the United States. Led by Dr Cynthia M Otto, director of the Working Dog Center, eight Labrador Retrievers are being trained to sniff out the coronavirus.

With up to 300 million smell receptors – compared to six million in humans – dogs are well-positioned to aid in disease detection. This pioneering study – that will explore the sensitivity and specificity of scent – sets the stage for dogs to be a force multiplier in the mission to detect Covid-19, particularly among asymptomatic patients, or hospital or business environments where testing is most challenging.

Penn Vet is using the Labradors, over three weeks in July this year, through a process called odour imprinting. The dogs will be exposed to Covid-19 positive saliva and urine samples in a laboratory setting. Once the dogs learn the odour, the investigators will document that the dogs can discriminate between Covid-19 positive and Covid-19 negative samples, establishing the platform for testing to determine if the dogs can identify infected people.

“Scent detection dogs can accurately detect low concentrations of volatile organic compounds, otherwise known as VOCs, associated with various diseases such as ovarian cancer, bacterial infections, and nasal tumours. These VOCs are present in human blood, saliva, urine or breath,” said Cynthia Otto, DVM, PhD, professor of Working Dog Sciences and Sports Medicine and director of Penn Vet’s Working Dog Center.

Dogs Are Now Classified As Companion Animals In China

Beijing, China: China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, announced in early April that dogs would no longer be considered livestock, but instead, as loyal companions.

The change of policy means dogs cannot be bred for food, milk, fur, fibre, medicine, or for military or sports purposes. The ministry said the “progress of human civilisation” and the “public’s concern” for animal welfare were reasons for reclassifying dogs as companion animals.

The ministry is finalising guidelines to the draft. But given the clear classification of dogs as companion animals by the ministry, local governments in China could follow suit to ban the consumption of wildlife and pets.

Shenzhen, the southern Chinese city bordering Hong Kong, became the first city in the country to

ban the eating of cats and dogs in early February this year.

Around 10 million dogs and four million cats are estimated to be slaughtered and eaten in China every year, according to Hong Kong-based animal welfare group Animals Asia, but the practice is coming under increasing criticism from the country’s growing ranks of pet lovers.

Feeding India’s Abandoned Pets: An Essential Service

Delhi, India: The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) has declared feeding companion and stray animals to be an essential service during the nationwide control and containment of Covid-19 pandemic lockdown.

In an advisory issued by the AWBI, it called for District Administrations “to allot specific time during the morning and evening hours for individuals/volunteers to provide food and water for street animals and birds”. The Board has asked the various cities in the country to give special “feeder passes” to individuals and animal welfare groups to feed street animals who are in danger of starving.

The advisory issued by Dr OP Chaudhary, its Chairman, requested the concerned authorities to create awareness amongst the public to take care of stray animals during the lockdown and that “the law enforcement authorities may also be directed to see that the animals and birds do not suffer due to hunger.” India imposed a lockdown from 24 March - 31 May, 2020. p

he Covid-19 pandemic shifted many veterinary clinics from routine to emergency-only appointments – leaving pet owners to address minor injuries and basic grooming issues normally resolved by professionals.

Veronica Jones, DVM, an emergency medicine veterinarian at NorthStar Vets in Robbinsvile, NJ, in the United States, says pet owners don’t have to weather the coronavirus storm alone and provides tips on when and how to visit a vet, at-home remedies and the best ways to keep your pet safe and healthy during this crisis.

Veterinary services are essential during this time of crisis. In these unusual times, should pet owners hold off on non-emergency visits?

Pet owners should call their primary vet first for any health issues. Some places discourage routine appointments, but some veterinary clinics are still open or offer telehealth services for mild issues.

do wonders for a wound. Afterwards, you can apply a triple antibiotic ointment like Neosporin to help the cut heal.

When it comes to wounds, pets like to lick them to try and heal them. I’d recommend putting on a collar with a cone to prevent them from licking and infecting the wound until it heals.

How can I bathe my dog at home, and how often?

Dogs need to keep their natural scents and oils, so a bath every six weeks should suffice. You can use your bathtub for a small dog, or a kiddie pool or a hose outside for a large dog, and a regular dog shampoo unless your dog has allergies and needs a special shampoo.

Products for pets aren’t as heavily regulated as products for humans, so I advise pet owners to look at the shampoo ingredients and avoid heavily scented shampoos.

Social distancing is making us all a little stircrazy, and taking the dog for a walk can be a good distraction. But, how much is too much exercise for a dog?

Older dogs don’t need as many walks, especially because they can have joint issues. For younger dogs, a walk or chasing a ball around the yard is a good activity for them two or three times a day.

Just don’t overdo it.

Once you get back to your normal schedule, your dog won’t be getting hourly walks with you.

There have been increasing reports that cats and dogs have tested positive for Covid-19.

Should I be concerned that I can catch the virus from my pet?

At the moment, regular testing for pets is not being done, and pets are only being tested when they show Covid-19 symptoms and other illnesses have been ruled out. There have been reports that a few cats and dogs have tested positive for Covid-19.

What about claw trimming?

When you hear a “click” or “clack” on a hard floor, that sound is an indication that a pet needs a nail trim. Cats can file their claws down themselves on scratching posts or cat trees. Dogs won’t do that.

Dogs have darker nails than cats, so you have to be careful that you don’t cut the quick at the bottom

of the nail, which is full of blood vessels and will be painful if broken.

You don’t have to trim all of the dog’s nails in one sitting. Give them a treat after a few clips and let some time pass in between to allow them to adjust to the process.

Look at the shampoo ingredients and avoid heavily scented shampoos

However, we’re hearing from the CDC and the veterinary community that infection rates are low in pets, and they have very mild symptoms. We understand that these pets contracted the illness from humans, not the other way around.

However, we should limit our interaction with others ‒ and that includes pets ‒ to reduce potential spread. If you’re the only person coming into contact with your pet, then that’s OK, but I’d recommend postponing play dates with pets from other households until the crisis subsides.

Animal shelters are full of volunteers and animals that need homes. Is it a good idea to adopt a pet during this crisis?

If someone wants to adopt a pet now, then I wouldn’t deter them. But, right now, we’re working at home, and, later on, we may not be.

So, make sure it’s a pet you will be able to handle when you go back to your normal routine.

Since we’re not at this point entirely sure about pets and Covid-19 risk, you will want to wash a newly adopted pet when you get home. p

Meet the man at the helm of Singapore’s most iconic animal welfare organisation.

Life’s Chosen Path

The lead up to his tenure at the SPCA involved several factors. First, his passion for social work (at old folks home, etc) and then, an inclination towards societal issues kept him looking into the welfare side of life – for both animals and people.

His background and experience in animal welfare will put paid to any doubts raised before that: from the World Animal Protection (Bangkok, Thailand), Soi Dog Foundation (Phuket, Thailand), Animal Aid Unlimited

H

e is a man on a mission. Dr Jaipal Singh Gill is the executive director of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), and, lives matter – not just animal lives – but all lives, matter emphatically to him.

It’s not possible to separate the man from his work. After all, his work is what makes him tick.

At the helm of the iconic animal welfare name since 2016, Dr Gill is 37-years of age; married; a vegetarian; has an older brother; really enjoys music and is into Yoga. He is also a Volunteer Police Officer, a qualified veterinarian but above all, he is dedicated to improving the lives and welfare of animals.

Yes, he’s had pets (past tense here). As a child, there were guinea pigs, terrapins, dogs and fishes at the start of his lifelong love of animals. Except cats. “My mother said no cats,” Dr Gill remarks.

His favourite dog, a Maltese of 14 years passed away back in 2011 of a heart problem. He and his wife (“hugely passionate about animals”) have taken to fostering animals when time permits ever since.

“I was always reading about animals, starting from as young as I can remember.”

(Rajasthan, India), and Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Singapore), and that is just part of his internship experiences while in vet school.

It was at the National University of Singapore in 2004 and his involvement in life sciences that saw him making inroads into the animal welfare arena. Dr Gill says: “Animal welfare wasn’t really on the agenda so I started a Students Animal Welfare Group.”

He adds: “The whole bunch of us – at least 10 other students – got involved in running numerous animal welfare activities. At that time, we got involved in the domestic animal scene, volunteering work etc.”

There, a better understanding around law and policies of the day that could contribute towards the betterment of all, also made him realise that: “There are many things that could be done.” Upon graduation, he knew his path in life was set and he knew where he was going.

Providence Had A Hand In It

Of him hitching up with the SPCA, he says: “The timing was perfect.” One day after lunch, back in 2007, he spied a small and inconspicuous ad by the SPCA for an animal inspector. Providence must have smiled at him, as he called to apply immediately and, after an interview… walked out with a job on hand.

His interviewer was none other than the doyen Deirdre Moss, an animal champion if

ever there was one. Till today, he keeps in touch with his good friend and ex-boss, and her field of volunteer work in Australia. Dr Gill credits her as his mentor and is ever appreciative of his time spent under her tutelage.

Of the job itself, It was a baptism of fire: “Looking back, I must admit, it was a tough job.

I came away with respect for the job of an SPCA Inspector – seeing animal cruelty on a daily basis, really gets to you.”

Though tough going mentally and physically, he adds: “There was no time to think during the day, but… in the middle of the night… you ask yourself, ‘Could I have done better?’” He realises there were lots of self-doubts: “But you learn to stay positive. The rescues keep you going – at least, I have that to fall on.”

Further Upgrades

After a year, he wanted to better equip himself in his role: “I could upgrade myself further in terms of my animal welfare knowledge, etc. I wanted to upgrade myself and want to come back to do better for animal welfare.” So it was back to school.

He completed his Honours at the University of Melbourne and was back home by 2009.

When in Australia, he conducted animal welfare research with baby calves in the dairy industry, even an Orang Utan project (effect of visitors on animals), and even a chicken farm project. Upon his return, he re-joined the SPCA as Assistant Manager of Operations and supported the animal welfare services. The coverage of his field gave him wider exposure – from animal shelters to investigation and disease control.

He did this for two years after which he realised he could do much more for the animals if he continued with his studies. He got his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at the University of Melbourne four years later. He adds: “This is right, I love what I was doing.”

It was then back to the fold at the SPCA in 2016 as Acting Executive Director. “There were lots of different options, including work in Australia, but I wanted to come back to finish my work here.”

Back On The Fast Track

That year, the SPCA moved to Sungei Tengah, and it hit him front and centre. “There were financial challenges as we had to build up from scratch – there was nothing but grassland when we took over the land.” Sparing no effort, their staff members rolled up their sleeves, and then: “We were back to focusing on animal welfare issues.”

“One of the first things we looked at was the pet population.” The swelling numbers of abandoned animals were of grave concern especially for the animal shelters across the island.

“We wanted to nip the problem in the bud, concrete things had to be done.” Sterilisation was one big part of the answer. The other, microchip rules that were put in place by the government to tighten pet dog ownership, to discourage the dumping of animals.

The microchip rules took bite within a few short years and produced a clear decline in dog abandonment. With schemes like Project ADORE and the Trap-Neuter-Release-Manage programme funded by the then Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA), Dr Gill is confident that the population numbers will decline further. “This should accelerate over time, so that the numbers will be down. When the shelters are getting emptier over time, that means we are tackling the problem.”

However, as he improves one area, he notices another coming up – animal training. “Over time, the science behind animal psychology and training has evolved. Our knowledge of training has changed.” This is SPCA’s latest cause for concern.

He says: “With the advancement in science, we need to let go of some old animal training methods. Humane and force-free rewards-based approach should be the default.”

“When the shelters are getting emptier over time, that means we are tackling the problem.”

“Hung, to instil fear? We want to get rid of the most cruel of practices. We’re saying: There is an alternative.” Training takes time, and he acknowledges that owners who send their dogs for training, their expectations too, have to be moderated for this to happen.

Be Kind To Animals

SPCA’s role has been always clear to him – to end animal cruelty – to be kind to animals. While there are long term and short term challenges towards this end, the future lies in taking up root causes.

“Before you get a pet, you must be armed with the knowledge to care for it.” Dr Gill and his fellow staffers will be looking towards this educational component for potential pet buyers soon. “We can do better for the animals.”

Law and policy-making is another important arena and they plan to do further work with the different ministries. Make no mistake, the SPCA is for all creatures big and small. Outside the pet sector, the lives for fresh seafood – from fish, eels,

even prawns at the supermarket can be improved.

“There must be a better way to handle this. But it is heartening to see that people today are more concerned and aware of what’s going on. Society is changing.”

He praises ACRES (Animal Concerns Research & Education) and notes: “We live in an urbanised environment and human and wildlife skirmishes will arise from time to time.” Yes, from otters to macaques, more such conflicts are to be expected.

On improving the pet sector, there are two main issues he’s looking at: Raising the standards

of the pet industry, such as boarding facilities, and the ongoing educational programmes.

Personal Front

Although the work on the animal front is very emotional and closest to his heart, he makes time for other work too – as a Volunteer Police Officer.

“I’ve been doing this for three years already. I do enjoy the role. It provides me an opportunity to give back in different ways.”

On the personal front, his first thought is of his family. Not one born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he is grateful that his parents gave him the

opportunity to do what he wanted most. Till today both his parents (above 60 years of age) are still working. “I only managed to do this because of the strong support I had from them, and my wife.”

He wants to be involved in work where he contributes to possible lasting change. On the agenda he sets for himself: “I want to keep updating myself. Our views change as we get more exposed, and I want to continue to upgrade myself – there’s so much more to learn.”

When asked the hardest question in the twohour-long interview: Describe yourself in three words, his answer is much like the man himself

– real and straightforward. He says: “Passionate.

Committed. Fallible.”

Yes, passionate. Yes, committed. Fallible?

Being very human, he recognises that he is fallible and is therefore very critical of himself. Haunted with questions like: How can I do better, what needs to be done better? He says: “The work that my team and I do has to be meaningful.”

Parting words from Dr Gill: “I am very privileged and honoured to be in this position and I have a fantastic team with me at the SPCA. We get to do positive things – we can, ultimately, see a brighter future for animal welfare.” p

SPCA’s Position Statement On Animal Training We advocate for humane, force-free, rewards focused and evidence based approaches to animal training.

Examples of this are the use of rewards such as food, toys or praise to promote desired behaviours, as well as to encourage the learning of alternative behaviours in place of unwanted behaviours. We believe this approach is kinder and more effective with long lasting results. It makes training more enjoyable for the animal and the human, while encouraging the development of a strong, positive human-animal bond.

We oppose the use of aversive and forceful methods that can cause pain, injury, fear, distress or anxiety.

Examples of this are beating, kicking, choking and hanging, and the use of equipment such as electric shock collars, choke collars and prong collars. We believe this approach does not address the underlying causes of behaviour, and can negatively impact the animal’s welfare in the short and long term. It may also lead to increased aggression and can result in the development or worsening of behaviour problems.

It's a Love Story...

It’s the sight of stray animals and unwanted hungry kittens that tugs at Maxine’s heartstrings. Wanting to do the right thing by them, she propels herself into the world of business and now has a Kickstarter Launch to boot.

S

he is Maxine Ang Bishko, a Singapore-based pet enthusiast and selfproclaimed “Chief Animal Slave” to all the fur-kids who have touched her life. The 32-year-old is launching her Kickstarter campaign for the Modpod, a modular design furniture system for, obviously ‒ cats. The “furniture cats can finally use” would enable “humans and cats to cohabitate while allowing everyone from shoebox to big spaces to maintain a stylish décor in their homes”, is how she puts it.

While it functions as a coffee table, bed, or bookshelf, these boxes also function as a hideout and a nest for four-footed inhabitants of the house.

A Journey In Time

Her journey as a sassy entrepreneur and, inventor to this point started back in 2007. “My mother is a huge animal lover. She used to bring chickens from her kampung into our new home, as well as her pet dogs she had adopted as strays.” Maxine grew up in a veritable menagerie with guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, tortoises, and fishes for pets. No cats though.

All that changed when “I found my first cat, a kitten in the school canteen when I was studying in Nanyang Polytechnic.

He was an abandoned little thing, sitting in a cardboard box together with two of his siblings. I took him home and named

Over the years, the rest of her family promptly too got involved finding strays in drains, bushes, even construction sites.

him Cadbury.” They all took on the task of fostering, neutering and re-homing many of them. “Many of them did not get adopted, so they stayed with us and are now part of our family.”

It’s obvious she had vested interest when she started a pet supply business around 2007. This was when online shopping was a relatively new concept, but she soon realised that – apart from filling a need amongst pet owners to have heavy and bulky pet supplies delivered to their doorstep, being in the business brought a huge benefit – helping her to feed her growing brood of strays.

The business grew and after eight years, she specialised in the distribution of all-natural food products from USA, Japan, Malaysia and Taiwan into Singapore. Being in the business also opened many pathways for Maxine and, she soon saw a nice little niche where she could entrench herself happily ‒ for a while at least.

She sought to design and manufacture furniture that cats and humans could use together.

Maxine says: “Growing up in Singapore and becoming accustomed to living in small quarters, I wanted to change the way we all live with our pets.”

Over the course of time, Maxine found herself busy sketching and designing an all-inclusive modular furniture that would allow her family and her brood of cats to enjoy. Memories of how her household furniture was decimated by their eager claws propelled her in the development of the ultrastrong Modpod system.

Research & Development

By 2016, the first sketches for these modular and configurable pieces came to light. Then there were the many edits and versions – from colour, to minute details (including sleek joints) required to assemble the pieces. She notes that every 0.01mm change affected the product’s durability, safety and strength.

Multiple visits to factories in 2017 to discuss prototype manufacturing resulted in copious design changes. A year-and-a-half later, her design finally saw the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel ‒ the final design was on hand for Maxine’s own pets to pounce on it.

Preparing for the Kickstarter launch produced another set of problems. The Modpods were being produced in Shenzhen, China, in a factory known for

producing prototypes for other Kickstarter projects too. Shipping the models to customers around the world soon proved to be a bug-bear as her product weighed in at three kilos per cube. To keep costs down, the team wrestled with the problem and eventually managed to set up a sensible logistical infrastructure.

Finally, at the beginning of this year, the Modpod took off at a Kickstarter pledge of US$49 per cube. It was launched in mid-July this year to the general public on Kickstarter.

Closing The Gap

On her personal life, Maxine revealed that she got married in Oahu, Hawaii in the middle of last year. The Singapore-side-of-ceremonies were held in February this year, fortunately, before the advent of the country’s Covid-19 Circuit Breaker.

“It was a long-distance romance spread over the past five years. We are currently seeking to close the gap… for me to move to Hawaii, where hubby Brian is based as a US Marine,” she says with a deceptively coy smile.

Of the future, Maxine says: “I hope that Modpods will be able to one day also provide a shelter for all the stray cats and little animals out there on the streets, no matter which part of the world they are from.”

Never one to turn her back on the less fortunate cats roaming the streets, Maxine has already made a pledge with her Kickstarter launch. She says: “Our Kickstarter launch allows backers to pledge Modpods to El Nido, Philippines, to help the El Nido Cat Sanctuary build their shelter. The Modpods will be sent directly to them. This is our first step toward changing the way strays live.”

Artist uses reclaimed metal to craft his bigger-than-life animal sculptures.

W Brian Mock uses reclaimed metal to craft his incredible animal sculptures.

hile most of us can only think of upcycling, this American artist uses scrap metal from old car parts and unused cutlery and turns them into fanciful outdoor sculptures.

Sculpture specialist, Brian Mock grew up near Portland, Oregon in the United States. He spent his young life drawing, and much of his adult life painting and wood carving. In the late 1990’s he began sculpting with recycled metal and, found his new avenue for his creativity.

From the screws, nuts, and bolts gathered, he discovered his love for upcycling art. After teaching himself how to assemble and weld his artistic sculptures into forms, he was able to create an entire menagerie of metallic animals – including dogs and cats – all from reclaimed materials.

Today, Brian’s work can be seen in galleries from New York to Maui, in public spaces, and several publications – including two art books. His sculptures have been purchased by a number of luxury hotels, by countless international collectors, and by “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” museum.

A Cat Food That Reduces Allergies

Science has finally found a way for pet parents with sensitivities to cat allergens to live with their cats.

urina has introduced a cat food called “Pro Plan LiveClear” that reduces cat allergens.

According to Nestlé Purina, LiveClear is the first and only cat food that reduces the allergens in cat hair and dander.

Managing cat allergens is a struggle for the one in five adults worldwide who are sensitized to cat allergens. “Many people think that cat hair is the root of their problem,” explained Dr Ebenezer Satyaraj, PhD, Director of Molecular Nutrition at Purina, immunologist for Nestle Purina Research and lead investigator on the research that led to the development of Pro Plan LiveClear, “but it’s actually what’s on it – the major cat allergen called Fel d 1, a protein that cats produce naturally in their saliva.”

All cats produce Fel d 1, regardless of breed, age, hair length, sex or body weight. When cats groom, Fel d 1 gets on the hair and skin through the saliva, and eventually into the environment.

Fel d 1, our goal was to neutralise it rather than inhibit its production.” A six-month safety study also showed that the egg product ingredient coating the LiveClear kibble is completely safe for cats to eat. The action happens in the cat’s mouth, but once swallowed, the ingredient is digested like any other protein.

“These allergens have created a huge barrier to cat ownership and may limit the loving interactions between cat lovers and cats,” says Dr Ebenezer Satyaraj on the research. “Our discovery has the potential to transform how people manage cat allergens.”

The Reducing Factor

The key ingredient in Pro Plan LiveClear is a specific protein sourced from eggs. When cats eat LiveClear, the protein binds to the Fel d 1 and safely neutralises it in the cat’s mouth. By reducing active Fel d 1 in the cat’s saliva, it reduces the allergen that is transferred to the cat’s hair and dander when they groom, ultimately reducing the allergen in the environment.

In a published study, feeding the product was shown to reduce the allergens in cat hair and dander by an average of 47 percent, starting in the third week of daily feeding.

No Truly Hypoallergenic Cats

Contrary to popular perception, there are no truly hypoallergenic cats. All cats produce Fel d 1 – regardless of breed, age, hair length, hair colour, sex, or body weight. Up to 95 percent of reactions in cat allergen-sensitive people are caused by Fel d 1. Produced primarily in cats’ salivary and sebaceous glands, Fel d 1 is transferred to a cat’s hair and skin during grooming, then dispersed into the environment via hair and dander.

A response in people sensitised to Fel d 1 occurs when the allergen comes into contact with the individual and then binds with specialised immune defence proteins in their body. In this research, spanning more than a decade, Purina scientists found that an anti-Fel d 1 antibody (IgY) can block specific sites on Fel d1 produced in cats’ saliva, thereby neutralising the allergen.

Purina makes it clear that this cat food is not intended to replace other allergen-management strategies, like vacuuming or extensive cleaning of the home, but it offers an additional tool to reduce cat allergens in the environment. p

WHAT YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE CAT LITTER BOX, BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK! While most cats take well to a cat litter box, others face snags and difficulties when they have to answer the call of nature.

ontrary to what most people think, there is not much training needed, as long as the litter box meets all the basic requirements. However, should for some reason your cat takes displeasure to using the cat litter box, there may be some rationale behind his behaviour.

For example, it could be a way to alert you to its own physical or psychological discomfort. Peeing outside the box may be a way to communicate to you ‒ certainly not to spite you.

Some cats may be experiencing health issues that need to be addressed by a vet. Others may be going through a difficult time, such as when ageing or health issues crop up.

Each cat has a personality of its own. While some may be fussier, others are more anxious or less confident naturally. For the more sensitive cats, their environment must feel safe and conducive to reduce the stress level.

Becoming aware of your cat’s perspective towards the litter box will help prevent and also address problems that may lie ahead.

Avoiding Accidents

To avoid “accidents” around the house, consider the following six pointers: 1. Size Matters • Don’t buy a litter box that just fits a kitten. Buy a larger box that fits the total length of a grown cat standing.

• Don’t buy a box that is too shallow unless you have an ageing cat that has difficulties getting in the box.

2. Litter Substrate • There are different types of litter substrates with different attributes. While some are made of clay, others are manufactured using soya or even paper. Your cat may have a preference for one over another. Some cats are fussy with even the size and texture of pellets.

• In general, cats like a good thick layering inside the box.

• Try not to change the type and texture of litter substrate too suddenly. It’s best to introduce the new kitty litter by mixing 1 part of it with 1 part of the old substrate. Alternatively, have a separate box with the new litter substrate, placed beside the old box.

• Preferably continue the same litter substrate that your cat was already accustomed too before you adopted him.

3. Cleanliness • Keep the litter box clean. When a litter box is out of sight, hard to reach, or comes with an added cover on top of the box, there are fewer chances that the box will stay clean.

• Cats don’t like to squeeze in and step over their own/other cat’s pee and poo. As such, be generous in terms of size when selecting a cat litter box. A litter box size is generally 55cm in length, by 40cm in width and 15 cm in depth.

The caveat here is: The bigger the better!

Scoop twice a day or more depending on the number of felines in the home.

4. Number Of Boxes • Cats are generally fine sharing cat litter boxes with their cat mates. If you have more than one cat, the rule of thumb is 2 + 1. For example, three cats should have four litter boxes.

• Always have a minimum of two litter boxes even if you have just one cat. Even if the additional box is used only on an occasional basis, it provides your cat with an alternative option.

5. Open Concept • It’s preferable to get a litter box without an added cover. A cat likes to see all around him when he goes about his daily business.

They don’t like the notion that they may get ambushed by another cat/dog. This is especially so when you are introducing a new companion animal into the environment or have multiple cats. Moods and relationships between cats can change daily and over time. It’s best to have no cover.

• The concentrated poo and urine smell in a covered box also makes the box less attractive for a cat.

• Scoop twice a day or more depending on the number of felines in the home. While some cats will cover their handiwork after they’re done, some cats won’t.

A cat litter box should be placed in an open and easily accessible location.

• Remember cats don’t like to step on their pee and poo, or, on their friend’s pee and poo either.

• Don’t use plastic bags inside the litter box.

• If you insist on getting one with a cover, start with the cover off, and if all goes well, then place the cover back on after a couple of months of successful introduction.

• When you introduce a new cat, keep the lids off for the same period of time and gradually put the tops back on, one at a time, monitoring the most popular boxes.

• If you have a cover, remove the door of the litter box permanently to keep the box more open, circulate air better and lower the feeling of being trapped.

• If your cat misses the box, your first step is to remove the cover immediately.

• Some cats are more anxious and the trip to the box may prove stressful to them. Sudden noises, visiting guests, noisy children, travelling paw parent and even new furniture may trigger the onset of anxiety for a cat heading to the litter box. This is where having more than one litter box would help a nervous cat.

• It’s important to note that electric self-cleaning litter boxes are not advisable for certain types of cats and situations. It is an enclosed litter box type and it makes noise and movement when operating.

6. Location • A cat litter box should be placed in an open and easily accessible location. It is not advisable to choose a dead-end corner in the toilet or utility room, even for that matter purpose-built furniture.

• Do not put all your litter boxes in the same location. While it may be convenient for the paw parent, it certainly defeats the purpose of having an extra litter box.

• Noisy areas (eg: a box placed next to a washing machine, playful children) might not be the most ideal location for an already nervous cat.

• Should you choose to train your cat to do it on the human toilet, your cat may not be thrilled to jump and balance precariously – especially when age and sickness catch up with him. Be prepared to change and adapt back to a more conventional litter box concept.

Finally, it’s best to let your cat make the right decision right at the onset. Consider your cat’s best interest when it comes to selecting the substrate, size, type and placement of the litter box.

Should your feline companion develop behavioural issues with the litter box, don’t wait to act. The longer the problem persists, the harder it will be to correct it. Consider contacting a cat behavioural expert after ruling out any underlying medical issues with your vet. p

s a certified Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator (CPR and AED) instructor for humans, I have always been curious about how lifesaving works for our furry companions.

Couple this curiosity with a few health scares from my very own fur baby, it did not take me long to decide on signing up for the PetSaver CPR, First Aid & Care programme.

The next part was the fun one – practicals! Besides learning about the different kinds of muzzles to use on both dogs and cats, we were also taught how to muzzle our dogs (using toy dogs), which is dependent “on the situation, the size and behaviour of the pet, the injury and if you are alone or if you have help”.

Then we got to carry out the correct actions and perform the right CPR and breathing techniques on pets small and large, or barrelchested. Our instructor made us emulate different versions of approaching a pet: From making your presence known, to giving them the help they require, all within a reasonable amount of time.

Hands-On Lessons

Our instructor, Ralph, a Pet Tech CPR & First Aid Instructor from Fido Pawpose, was effable from the start. As soon as I walked through the door with my family, he was there to greet us personally.

The class was kept small for easier communication and more space for each of us to move and workaround. After a 15-minute introduction of the programme, we were all set and ready to get started.

The programme commenced with a theory lesson on the essential must-knows. Taking us through the various ways of better discerning the changeable and non-changeable factors that contribute to the well-being of our pets, our instructor gave an engaging and interactive lecture on emergencies and how best to tackle them when the situation calls for it.

As confidence and steadiness are important factors when handling pets in dire situations, we had to demonstrate the techniques learnt in front of the whole class.

All’s Well That End’s Well

After the many rounds of practice, it was time for us to figure out to do in different scenarios eg: when faced with a situation at home, or the dog park.

From Choking Management, Blood Loss Protocols, Shock Management, and even Seizures, we not only got to learn and practice how and what we should do, but also what we should NOT do, one of them being not putting our fingers or hands into our pet’s mouth and trying to hold them.

Even if your pet is the sweetest, most gentle creature you have ever known in your life, their teeth and claws can still hurt you during such times of discomfort. The programme ended off with a short question and answer session. Any doubts or unclarified queries were carefully and rectified by Ralph. We were also advised and taught how to prepare a simple First Aid Kit for our pets for emergencies.

While it was only within a day, all of us came out of the course feeling more enabled to help our animal friends when they are in need. A certificate of completion was awarded to each of us at the end of the course, which also bestowed upon us a two-year license to carry out the lifesaving methods we have learnt on our furry friends when the situation calls for it. p

A Word Of Caution Things to take note of: • Be clearly and consistently aware of your pet’s age, nature and health issues.

• When approaching an injured pet, always alert them of your presence first.

• Make sure First Aid, CPR and/or Rescue Breathing is carried out accordingly.

• Do not, in any circumstance, put your hand or fingers into the mouth of the pet.

Parvo in puppies is, unfortunately, a common disease with deadly consequences.

anine parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious virus that will affect all dogs.

Rottweilers, American Pit Bull Terriers, Doberman Pinschers, and German Shepherd are at increased risk of disease. Toy Poodles and Cocker Spaniels appear to have a decreased risk of developing enteric disease.

The virus is highly contagious and spreads very easily around dogs and puppies that aren’t up to date with their vaccinations. It affects the dogs’ gastrointestinal tract and causes acute gastrointestinal illness, especially in pups younger than four months old.

The virus itself is resistant to heat, cold, humidity, and drying, and can survive in the surroundings for long periods. It is generally spread via direct contact and it can contaminate surfaces, food and water bowls, leashes and collars.

Even recovered dogs can serve as carriers and shed the virus periodically.

Signs & Symptoms

The virus spreads through body fluids, including dog’s poo and vomit. It is extremely hardy and might survive within the environment outside the body eg: in the grass at a park – for at least six

months or longer. It’s not uncommon for dogs to catch Parvovirus after a walk.

Symptoms to look out for include: bloody diarrhoea, vomiting, weight loss, weakness, fever, lethargy, anorexia, dehydration, depression. Your veterinarian can run several tests to find out if your dog has been infected with CPV. After exposure, puppies and adult dogs begin shedding the virus within four to five days. Puppies can continue to shed the virus for up to 10 days after clinical recovery. As such, it’s recommended that recovering pups be kept isolated from other dogs.

Most deaths from CPV occur within 48 to 72 hours following the onset of clinical signs. If your puppy or dog shows any of those signs, you should contact your veterinary instantly.

Preventive Steps

The good news is, Parvo is a preventable virus.

To protect adult dogs, pet owners should take care that their dog’s parvovirus vaccination is up-todate. Keeping pups isolated from adult dogs after shows or field trials are recommended. Bitches used for breeding should receive a full course of parvovirus vaccinations, as the puppies depend on

If your home and yard are contaminated by an infected dog, there are steps you can take to disinfect the area. Cleaning with a solution of onepart bleach mixed with just about 30 parts water is a suitable technique for disinfecting any indoor space (including bedding, food and water bowls, etc) that once housed an infected dog.

While it is recognised that humans cannot get parvo from their dogs, they can pass the virus from one dog to another via, their garments, shoes, or hands. p

Canine parvovirus replicates in the lymphoid tissue of the oropharynx after ingestion. From there, it spreads to the bloodstream. It attacks with rapidly dividing cells throughout the body, especially those in the bone marrow, lymphopoietic tissue, and the crypt epithelium of the jejunum and ileum.

Replication in the bone marrow and lymphopoietic tissue causes neutropenia and lymphopenia, respectively. Replication of the virus in the crypt epithelium of the gut causes the collapse of intestinal villi, epithelial necrosis, and hemorrhagic diarrhoea.

Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis is based on an appropriate history. The most common and most convenient technique of testing for the presence of CPV is by faecal sampling. An enzyme-linked-immunosorbent serologic assay test or hemagglutination test is then conducted.

While the CPV ELISA test is fairly accurate, it can sometimes offer false positive or false negative results, as such, additional testing may be required to confirm a diagnosis.

No specific drug therapy is available to eliminate the virus in infected dogs at this time. Treatment is generally designed to support the dog’s body systems, directing the restoration of fluid balance until the system can defend itself against the infection.

A clinical stay is usually necessary as intravenous fluids and nutrients need to be administered. Blood transfusions might also be useful to boost low blood cell counts that may result from CPV infecting the bone marrow. Oral electrolyte solutions may be used in mildly dehydrated dogs without a history of vomiting.

The Biggest Dog In Singapore?

N

ot too long ago, Matt Harris was watching a video at home on the largest Great Dane in the world and they showed it next to its owner. The dog came up nearly to the person’s chest and the person looked quite small.

Matt turned to Tucker, his Great Dane of six months old at the time, and realised that the dog came up to about the same height when placed next to his wife. “It didn’t appear he was much smaller than this largest dog. And given the size of Singapore and how few Great Danes there are here, I just made a guess he is likely the biggest!”

Yes, he’s now on a quest to find out if indeed Tucker is the biggest Great Dane in Singapore and put paid to the claim.

Growing Brood

Matt Harris and his wife Lisa have an obvious partiality towards Great Danes for a long while.

Originally from the United States, the couple moved to Singapore from California back in 2011 with their previous two dogs, also Great Danes.

Their children eight-year-old Michaela and six-year-old Parker were born here and they attend an international school. While Lisa works in human resource for a multi-national company, Matt’s been kept busy as an educational consultant. He recently started a local business that uses eLearning to teach Child Abuse prevention techniques in organisations that serve children.

As to their penchant for Great Danes, Matt says: “We have found them to be very loving animals and very loyal. However, they tend to be happier with a companion. When they are in pairs they always have another dog to play with or cuddle when we are not around.”

Hefty Challenge Matt Harris is on a quest – to find out if indeed he owns the largest dog in Singapore – a Great Dane towering almost 1 metre high.

A chance holiday in June last year saw them in Melbourne, Australia. They drove four hours north to a recommended working vet technician and breeder with a great reputation. “The puppies were nine-days-old when we met them. We fell in love with these two at the time!” Matt got them duly shipped to our sunny shores by September 2019.

Feeding the growing pups was needless to say, an ever-growing affair. Matt feeds them with “grain-free kibble, mixed 30 percent with two cups of Royal Canin Maxi Puppy three times a day.” But

that’s not all. There’s the added vitamin C, fish oil, glucosamine and probiotics and about 250g of sweet potatoes to round off their hefty meals.

With two two-footed young ones and two four-footed young ones running around their house Matt says: “It’s a fun challenge, but a challenge for sure.”

The dogs, now just over a year old, are energetic, curious, mischievous, loving, and generally very happy though completely unaware of their size. He adds: “They love to sit in your lap if you get down on the ground with them and they are always good for a cuddle.”

However, the Harris’ has more holes in the yard than they would like and, of course, the children’s toys have been stealthily filched when no one’s looking. He adds: “The kids also fall victim to the dogs sometimes as the dogs can often get pretty excited when playing. It’s a bit difficult when you’re a six-year-old confronted by a playful pooch that outweighs you by 30 kgs.”

Gentle Giants

The gentle giants like to wrestle and run around the Harris’ garden, but for the most part, they sleep. “Great Danes are not overly energetic (just in spurts, really) so they nap a lot and they always want to be in the same room as one of their people.” Besides, he adds: “they are quite attached to each other, whining loudly when one is taken for a walk alone.”

The size and weight of the dogs now? Matt got them across to the vet (after the first phase of the Circuit Breaker) and promptly got them tallied up.

He says: “They are BIG and HEAVY!” Tucker hit the scales at 68kgs and notched 92cm high at the shoulder while Harley came in at 55kg and 81cm in height.

While there is no official confirmation on whether his dogs are the biggest in Singapore, Pets magazine, is looking if there are any other contenders for the position. If you know of any other bigger dog in Singapore, do write in and help Matt in his quest. p

hen people think of cats, not many breeds come to mind as quickly as the Bengal Cat. Coming from the hybrid mix of the Asian Leopard Cat, Egyptian Mau and the domestic cat, Bengals have a unique appearance like no other.

Depending on their pattern and coat, this means that the average Bengal can fetch anything from SG$1,400 to SG$25,000 (Champion Bloodlines) with only the Savannah or Ashera to beat the price tag, making them one of the top “designer” type cats in the world. The current world average is somewhere between US$1,500 US$3,000.

What makes the price so justified? While many believe that the piece of pedigree paper is justification enough, the actual price of breeding the cat is also a big part of the price tag.

Bengals are great at observing their owners and adapting to their gestures and expressions.

Trait Marks

The typical traits of a cat also play a part, such as generation, quality, age, temperament, and demand which is usually associated with the coat.

With the average requirement for a Bengal to be at least four generations from the Asian Leopard Cat, it is no wonder their coats are truly unique.

Bengal Cats have an athletic appearance with its lean, balanced look. The large triangularshaped head is supported by a thick neck. Large feet and a thick tail complete the overall feral cat look. Their high cheekbones, dark markings around the eyes and the small ears make them specifically distinctive. And their coats have a plush feel, unlike any other cat breed.

Keep your Bengal happy and free from boredom by adding on toys that would simulate the hunting instinct in them. If you’re thinking of a cat that will laze on the couch all day long, the Bengal will certainly not fit the bill!

Bengals are known to be highly intelligent. Michael’s cats love watching animal documentaries (besides cartoons) to learn more about the world around them.

As a pet, they are known to be highly intelligent and trainable, creating the perfect housecat to have for any type of owner. They are also often known to learn basic tricks like sit and lie down.

• The Bengal Cat’s name comes from the scientific name for the Asian Leopard Cat, Prionailurus bengalensis.

• The first crossbreed was performed by Jean Mill in 1963, but the hybrid wasn’t perfected until the mid-1980s. Today, Bengals are bred only with each other.

• Bengals are the only domestic cat with rosettes that resemble the markings on leopards, jaguars and ocelots.

• The International Cat Association (TICA) accepted the Bengal for championship status in 1991 and the American Cat Fanciers Association (ACFA) accepted the breed shortly thereafter.

• It seems that Bengals are immune to feline leukaemia due to their inherited trait from their ancestry Asian Leopard Cat. The immunity was remarkable that a number of them were used as a study at the National Institute of Cancer.

• According to Yummypets.com, it seems that back in 1990, a British woman paid US$50,000 for a Bengal Cat.

lfred Khan, 41, is the owner of Designer Bengal. He’s a well-known figure in the local circuit and has become the de-facto advisor for all things a-la-Bengal-Cats. Being in the business for more than a decade, his dedication to both his clients and cats has earned him a reputation that’s hard to beat.

As a recognised specialist in this field and a certified breeder to boot, he knows quite a few things about these gorgeous creatures, to say the least. That’s the reason why when any prospective owners come through the door of his shop at Telok Kurau, he makes sure they leave fully educated and fully understand what they are getting themselves into.

He says: “First, I give them a briefing with emphasis on their origins.” He uses posters to tell them about this man-made hybrid – this is not your average domestic cat per se. While it is the call of the wild that makes these cats ever more attractive, understanding their nature would contribute to a forever home for the cats.

Back To Basics

Legally, the standard breed in Singapore must be at least five generations removed from the

original. Generally, it’s easier to handle one that is seven to 10 generations apart. “Those closer to the wild may be a bit unpredictable in terms of behaviour,” Alfred cautions.

Talking to them at this time, he is in essence, getting to know the potential cat parents better too. It’s important that they can maintain the cats and can accord the time required to take care of them. In terms of personality, he has to make sure the new parents are suitable candidates for the cats as they are outgoing, playful and pretty energetic.

In addition, the medical condition ‒ of the new owner and his immediate family are of interest to him. If there are family members with an allergy problem, that might be a cause for concern.

Insights like these can prove invaluable and would certainly lead to fewer frustrations and discord later on.

Home Sweet Home

The cat’s new environment comes under scrutiny too. He talks about areas of the house where they will be rehomed – from available shelving to scratching posts and a secure environment. Are there areas in the house that the cats can romp about?

Considerations and facilities to keep the cats stimulated and happy is one thing, cat-proofing the house is another. It’s a well-known fact that leather furniture tend to attract cats claws. Cats are difficult to contain at the best of times, with Bengals, it is more so. And, meshing placed around select places in the house may not be everyone’s idea of great décor.

However, Alfred wears his love for these cats on his sleeve’s and says: “I will not compromise on their safety.”

In Singapore, there are a few tiers of this breed that potential owners can choose from. For a Grade 3 it varies from $2,500 - $3,500; a Grade 2 feline will set you back anywhere from $4,000 to $5,000. The top tier Premium Grade goes for around $5,000 to $6,500.

Alfred is a member of The International Cat Association and describes the Bengal as: “A dog in a cat’s body, it’s much like having a mini leopard walking in the house.” That is the beauty of the animal, it’s a walk on the wild side. p Cats are difficult to contain at the best of times, with Bengals, it is more so.

So what exactly do you need to have to create an enriched environment for your Bengals?

Climbing, And Lots Of It

It can be a cat tree or flat board with sisal, but it has to be tall. The commercially ready-made cat trees are not made for climbing but scratching. Bengals are muscular hunters with a need for exercise.

Provide them with tall sturdy posts or boards and enjoy watching them climb their way up.

Jumping Around

This means shelves that enable ascent or descent and getting around, generally. If you have more than one Bengal cat, these strategically placed shelves, combined with climbing posts, bridges or natural cat trees will be their vertical playground and hunting ground.

A 360° round is most ideal if there is space within your home, but a wall space or two is good too with proper planning.

High Lookout Points

Bengals love to look out from, look down and rest on high places. These can be boxes to hide in, shelves, hammocks and bridges. If you do not have this provided for, Bengals will attempt to climb to the top of your fridge, cupboard, door, shower screen, laundry poles, cooker hoods, fans, chandeliers and many more unwanted places.

As long as there is a landing ground, they will be up there, even if these spots are precarious.

Perch By Open Space

Indoor cats can get bored looking at the same four walls, hence a perch by the window to watch the birds, listen to the leaves rustling or just to chill will enrich their environment.

These perches can come in the form of suspended platforms, shelves placed before windows, cat stations or bridges connecting two walls. Do remember to ensure that these windows or areas are secured for cats to safely look out from.

Bengals come from cross-breeding with Asia Leopard and domestic cats and they have the disposition of being wild, which can be a handful and challenging. Owning a Bengal keeps you on your toes and you can channel that high energy into something positive by bringing the “outdoors” into your home. Give Bengals opportunities to remain highly active to keep them happy and in turn, be happy Pawrents! p

Oriental White-Eye

Mata Puteh (Oriental White-Eye)

Easily recognised by a prominent eye-ring and yellow-green coloured feathers, the Oriental White-Eye is a small songbird with powerful vocals. Known affectionately as Mata Puteh, which also means “white eye” (mata putih) in Malay, this species is not as prevalent as before (the ‘70s) likely due to a progressive loss such as mangrove and forested areas.

Zebra Dove Chinese Thrush

Hwa Mei (Chinese Thrush)

The Hwa Mei, which means “painted eyebrow” in Chinese, is a passerine bird of Eastern Asia.

Another common species that can be found in Singapore, these birds are distinguished by their light grey-brown crowned head, stripes below the eyes and ears, and spots on its breast. It is also a popular cage bird due to its attractive singing abilities.

Merbok (Zebra Dove)

You may be surprised to know that this bird is a member of the dove family. Even though they look very much like a pigeon, these birds are worth quite a penny. With a long tail, and predominantly brownish-grey in colouring with black and white barrings, Merboks are well known for their pleasant soft, staccato cooing calls. Rumours have it that a record price of $96,000 exchanged hands for one such prized singer.

Keeping A Hamster: Top 8 Common Myths & Misconceptions When it comes to owning a hamster, these are the eight most common misconceptions that potential pet owners have.

amsters are one of Singapore’s most neglected pet species. As they are inexpensive, they are often bought on impulse by owners who have not done adequate research or taken enough considerations on caring for a pet. This results in many hamsters being housed in cages that are too small, with inadequate food, bedding, hideouts and even water.

Before taking ownership of a hamster, take a look at the top five most common misconceptions that potential pet owners have:

and could fight to the death ‒ even if they do not initially. Placing two or more hamsters together can be stress-inducing for your hamster. So just remember: One Hamster, One Cage!

1: Hamsters Need A Big Cage

It is a misconception that small cages are okay since they’re small. This is not true. Your hamster must have a large area to roam and burrow.

Hamsters in larger cages also tend to be more tame.

The absolute minimum size of a single floor space is: Dwarf Hamsters: 70cm by 40cm Syrian Hamsters: 80cm by 50cm Additionally, the larger your cage, the longer it takes to get dirty and stinky. Large cages only require spot cleaning every other day, and be totally cleaned out every 6-8 weeks unlike small cages where you have to clean and wash every single week.

“How about those acrylic tiered cages? There’s multiple floors!” The answer is no. Multi-tiered cages look pretty ‒ but the various levels do not give roaming and burrowing space needed.

2: Hamsters Do Not Need a Partner!

Well, hamsters are solitary animals, unlike guinea pigs and rats. They are also territorial

: Hamsters Do Not Eat Only Sunflower Seeds

Most hamster owners can agree that their hamsters love sunflower seeds a lot. However, these seeds are akin to our human version of junk food. Too much of that will cause obesity and various obesity-related diseases to your hamster such as heart disease. You may continue to give your hamster its favourite seeds as a treat but in moderation.

Popular commercial seed mixes available at pet shops have too much sunflower seeds and lack much of the nutrition that hamsters need. In the wild, a hamster’s diet consists of a mix of fruits, vegetables, insects and nuts.

Read the nutrition information before you buy seed mixes! Look for food that has minimal or no sunflower seeds, pellets and fillers. As a general guide, purchase only mixes with nutritional values as close to this as possible: Protein: 17% - 20% Fat: max 7% - 8% Fibre: 10% - 12% To supplement vitamins and protein, top up your hamster’s diet with fresh vegetables, chicken (boiled, unsalted), mealworms, and more.

4: Small Hamsters Do Not Equal Small

Hamster Wheels!

Hamsters need wheels and it has to be of the correct size. They are energetic creatures and they need to run! So, the wheel must provide the ability to run comfortably and safely with a straight back.

Else, you would risk them injuring their spine permanently, racking up a lot of vet fees down the road and of course, an unhappy and injured hamster.

If you have a Dwarf Hamster, it needs a wheel at least 21cm in diameter size:

The go-to fish in most aquariums. Easy to maintain and depending on the breed, can be incredibly stunning in appearance. It’s a case of “the more, the merrier” with Tetras. The specific difference in colour with Tetras are a big indicator of each specific type.

When placed together, this breed of fish is magnificent in any tank. With their striking bright orange-red look a sight to behold. When well cared for, these fishes can sometimes last up to 15 years. Although generally peaceful, they have been known to be aggressive under stressful conditions.

ringing a smile to your face. That must be the reason why German photographer Christian Vieler does what he does best: Catching dogs catching treats – all in an anticipating, goofy and oft-times, hilarious, split-second moment.

Christian has been taking these pinprick sharp photos since 2013. Using a portable flash to work with shutter speeds as fast as 1/8000th of a second, his first ‘shot’ of Lotte, his Labrador retriever, produced the results seen in his photo, books, calendar and posters.

The images let us see dogs in a new light, Vieler says. “I think the expressions of the dogs remind us of well-known feelings like desire, loss, pain or joy. And that’s what we normally don’t see that clear in the faces of our dogs.”

Most of the portraits are taken at his studio in Waltrop, Germany and as his popularity with his photo series “Dogs Catching Treats” grew, it led to the production of “Treat” and “Snapshots” in 2019.

Once the dogs are settled down for the photo shoot: “I start feeding the dog with his favourite treats to become his best friend for the next 30 minutes.”

Vieler says. He takes about 30 – 50 of these freeze frames. Circuit Breaker Video Challenge When: 5 - 17 May 2020

he circuit breaker measures were first introduced on 3 April 2020 in a bid to curb community’s spread. In other words: Keeping safe and making the most of our time at home.

Pet Lovers Centre and Pet Lovers Junior Club organised a circuit breaker video challenge for the young ones with their pets! The challenge offered the young ones a creative outlet plus, a whole load of fun while at it. In addition, playtime with your pet and family came with $50 worth of pet hampers for the winners.

Record Largest Online Gathering Of Pets & Owners When: 23 May 2020

I

n late May (in the midst the Circuit Breaker), some 293 participants gathered with their pets, and set a Singapore Book of Records figure for the largest online gathering of pets and their owners.

The virtual event, conceptualised by perromart, was held to encourage pet owners to come together during the Circuit Breaker, also raised food for the animal shelters. For every participant on the call, perromart donated 1kg of dog and cat food to animal shelters.

With the help from sponsors including name brands like Heka, Nutrience, Taste of the Wild, Addiction and Nurture Pro, perromart donated a total of 500kg of pet food to animal shelters instead of only 293kg.

During the 30 minutes Zoom call hosted by radio DJ Jill, from Kiss92, pet owners also had an educational session with Dr Tham from Jireh Veterinary Clinic.

rayer to Spring – Love is a solo exhibition

by Quek Kiat Sing, at the Visual Arts Centre this August. Kiat Sing, 48, juxtaposes modern-day subjects with traditional Chinese Ink to emphasise the relevancy of Asian culture in contemporary life.

Chinese ink painting on animals and pets are rare in Singapore and she has offered them a new lease in life with this chosen subject. A total of 44 pieces will be on show. While one part is based on the theme of Sakura Flower, the second part, ‘Love’ is dedicated to a series of pet paintings commissioned by various collectors.

“Animals are pure love. All pet owners can attest to this. My journey to paint them started with my own pets, Mandy (Chihuahua), and Bear Bear (Holland Lop),” says Kiat Sing.

“Originally, I wanted to have a dialogue session for the public where all the collectors of the pet paintings can talk about their pets and their paintings. Due to Covid-19, this event will be shifted online to my Facebook,” she adds.

Her favourite subject matters include the lotus ponds, mundane scenes of people and places in Singapore, as well as small animals. Kiat Sing has received numerous awards and has been commended in competitions such as the Sovereign Asian Art Prize, United Overseas Bank Painting of the Year Competition, the Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award and the China ASEAN Youth Artwork Creativity Contest.

She has twice been awarded the Freeman Fellowship at Vermont Studio Centre, USA; represented Singapore at the ASEAN Cultural Week in Vietnam in 2004; represented Singapore in the India-ASEAN Artist residency at Darjeeling, India in 2012; and has been selected to provide the artwork for Shenton Way MRT Station under the Land Transport Authority’s Art-in-Transit programme for the upcoming Thomson Line. p
