Dear reader, You're looking at the 6th edition of Oskar Kovačič Primary School magazine. In this issue our students revealed their thoughts about the future, about what they believe in, wrote about friendship, life in Slovenia, their holidays abroad, they introduced some of their teachers and successful students. FRIENDS HOW IMPORTANT ARE THEY? A friend is someone who keeps you company, that’s what someone can think. It’s true, they do keep you company but they’re also there for you. They will help you in bad moments or if you are in danger. They are the ones who keep you going, they’re always there for you even when you don’t want them to. Mr Miha Kastelec is a PE teacher at Oskar Elementary, he teaches me and my friends, but there’s another PE teacher, Mr Darijan Trojar and he teaches other students. There are also a lot of other good chefs, cooks and chef assistants at our school who make excellent food every day. Medard Verbinc, 9b Mr Miha Kastelec is one of the sport teachers at our school. Most of the time we play football with him. At Oskar we have a cleaning lady whose name is Mrs Zdravka Indžić. Sometimes

Interview with our ski jumper
Rok Masle
We talked to you last year but we've decided to ask you a few more questions since we've heard that you've had an amazing season. And you became national champion once again. Tell us, what were your best moments of 2018/2019 season?
What was your favourite competition?
Ok, well, the best moment of the past season was when I won 3rd place in the Alpen Cup* in Chaux-Neuve in France and that is actually a big achievement because the guys I was competing with were four years older than me.
My favourite ski jumping hill for now is the HS 140 in Planica.
Probably the one where I won 5th place in Kranj because it was the first time I was that good in the Alpen Cup. Which is your favourite ski jumping hill?
*Alpen Cup (a ski jumping competition held by six countries, competitors coming from Slovenia, Italy, France, Switzerland, Austria and Germany) And what are your ski jumping highlights? In the summer I had a bad season but I won the European competition in Hinterzarten, Germany. Then in the winter season I was again European champion in Kandersteg, Switzerland and I won 5th and 3rd place in the Alpen Cup. I also won two national competitions in the winter season.

How did you first get into ski jumping? I was three years old and it was my aunt who was looking after me at the time. Once she took me to Mostec where the guys were training ski jumping and I was like Oh, my gosh! I’ve always wanted to fly! so that was a perfect opportunity and from then on I kept asking my parents for one year to take me to training there and after one year I finally managed to get what I wanted. What was it that fascinated you about this sport? Flying. Who do you look up to and why? That’s Robert Kranjec because at the time when I started training, he was the best. How do you keep fit? I’ve been training a lot. What kind of training do you have? I have different kinds of training: for strength, explosive power, ski jumping, coordination, fitness, regeneration (football, stretching and massage) and gymnastics. Have you had and serious injuries so far? The most serious injury was when I fell in Planica, It was a pretty nasty fall. I had a light concussion. At gymnastics I once broke my ankle.
Are you allowed to eat sweets? I am allowed to eat everything but it’s not good for my weight. What's your favourite post competition snack?
Weight is a big issue for ski jumpers. We've heard that you have a sweet tooth. How do you cope with that?
That’s a burger but I’m not allowed to eat that. I also love chocolate rum bars.
I try not to eat food like candies but sometimes I just can’t resist. It’s hard.

What do you think of junk food? I love junk food but you need to put that aside and eat healthy food.
What do your parents think about all this? They support me.
Do you do any other sports?
You've been absent from school quite a lot because of training and competitions. What do your teachers have to say about it? Have they been supportive and understanding?
Yeah, gymnastics. You've also been competing in Nordic combined. You've been quite successful, haven't you?
Most of them were, especially my class teacher, Mrs Petra Kajzer Kvalić. She’s very understanding, helpful and thoughtful.

When you miss a lot of lessons how difficult is it to learn certain things in a short period of time?
Do you see yourself competing in this discipline in the future or is it only ski jumping that you live for?
It’s hard because you have a lot of new material to learn but not enough time to do it.
Absolutely not. It’s only ski jumping.

How would you describe yourself in one sentence?
What is your goal for this season? To be better than in the last season.
I’m not going to do this. You should ask others.
Where do you see yourself, let's say, in five years time?
What do you do in your free time?
I see myself in the World Cup but that’s something I can’t predict.
Most of the time I actually play video games and go out with my friends. And I sleep if I have time.
Could you tell our readers what it takes to become a successful athlete?
And when you're on top of the ski jumping hill, getting ready for a jump, what goes on through your mind?
You need to train hard and do whatever it takes to become the athlete you’ve always wanted to be.
I’m like… I don’t know. At first I try to focus on the things my coach tells me. When I climb on the gate I need to clear everything off my mind. And then I just feel free.
Do you have any advice for those who would like to succeed in sport? If you have a dream to chase, nothing can stop you!
Are you ever scared of the height when you look down?

I’ve never really been scared but I was nervous the first time I went to 120 ski jump since I had never experienced something like that before. But also very happy.

What’s your greatest achievement? My greatest achievement was when I won the National Championship with a jumping rope. Which three words describe you best? I think I’m kind, talented and I don’t give up that quickly.

What are you good at? I think I’m good at art and gymnastics. What is your favourite apparatus? My favourite apparatus is a jumping rope. What are you bad at? I’m really bad at housework and maths. What things annoy you? Hiking and cycling.
What are you afraid of? I’m terrified of spiders. I hate them!

Have you got any irritating habits? I don’t think so. Who do you admire and why? My role model is Aleksandra Podgoršek because she’s very good and very talented. What do you worry about? I’m worried about my high school future. What’s your favourite piece of advice? Just don’t give up on your dreams. What do you usually eat before a competition? I usually eat some salad. What are your plans for the future?
I want to become a professional gymnast. How much free time do you have and how do you spend it? I don’t have much free time. I spend it for homework, studying, going out…

INTERVIEW WITH MOUNTAIN BIKER MEDARD VERBINC
WHY DO YOU LIKE MOUNTAIN BIKING? Well, mountain biking is a fast, dynamic, adventurous and thrilling sport. And when you’re out biking, you feel one with nature. WHEN DID YOU DEVELOP INTEREST IN IT? A couple of years ago.
I ASSUME THAT THIS IS A HOBBY OF YOURS. WOULD YOU LIKE IT TO BE SOMETHING MORE? Yes, right now this is only my hobby but I would love to be a professional downhill rider one day. WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL? Jure Žabjek. He is a professional Slovenian downhill rider. But there are also people like Danny MacAshill, Nikola Rogatkin and Danny Heart.

MOUNTAIN BIKING IS CONSIDERED AS A DANGEROUS SPORT. WHAT’S YOUR OPINION ABOUT THAT? It’s only dangerous if you’re inexperienced and don’t have the right gear. HAVE YOU EVER INJURED YOURSELF? Yes. But nothing serious yet, mostly cuts and bruises. IS IT A PRICY SPORT? HOW EXPENSIVE IS YOUR GEAR? Yes. It’s quite pricy. The most expensive bikes can cost up to 11,000 €. But my gear is only worth about 3,000 €. WHERE DO YOU RIDE HERE IN LJUBLJANA? Well, in Ljubljana there are many options for riding. Ljubljana has 4 pump tracks and 2 trail parks (bike parks). These two consist of Golovec trails and Podutik bike park. I spend most of my time on Golovec trails. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. You’re welcome. Ira Verbinc, 7a

What do you train and how many times a week? Do you train together? Neja: We train jazz ballet and cheerleading 3 times per week, sometimes even 4 or 5 times. Nika: Yes, I also train gymnastics on Saturdays, because Jazz ballet also requires flexibility. We have extra trainings at the weekends before every competition. How do you prepare for a competition? Neja: We go to Kranjska Gora for three days and usually one month before a competition. Our practice lasts 8 hours per day. It involves running for good form, lifting exercises for better power, strength and balance. Nika: We also have gymnastics for good flexibility and of course we’re repeatedly rehearsing our routine. How does a competition day look like? Nika: We get up very early and then we prepare a full energy meal. Then we pack make up and costumes and of course lots of food. When we get to the dance hall our coaches do our make-up and hair and after that we get dressed. The moment before we hit the stage is the most stressful but 28
also the most important moment because the quality of a dance on stage depends on how peaceful and focused your mind is. Neja: After a rehearsal we change into something more comfortable and cosier and spend time together, making jokes and having fun. After a competition we often go to McDonald’s where we celebrate. (laugh) We know it’s not really a healthy place to eat food, but It’s mostly just a tradition of our team. Which three words best describe you? Nika: I think I’m a very hardworking person, stubborn and determined. Neja: Yes, I’m also very hardworking, stubborn and thorough. That’s important in dancing. What are you afraid of? Nika: I’m a little bit afraid of heights and every competition I’m scared that things won’t work out the way I wanted. Neja: I’m scared of small closed rooms and to be alone. Who do you admire and why? Both: I think we both admire our coach Eva Dajčman, because she always stands by us and has our back on the bad or good moments of our life. Together we face challenges when we win or lose. She’s the best motivator and the strongest person we know. This year she was pregnant but she trained us until the nationals, which were only 2 days before she went to a maternity hospital. At that time we also became

the national champions for the first time and we were beyond happy. It was the best way to end our dance season for this year. What is your greatest achievement? Neja: I think our greatest achievement would be competing at the European championship last year in Finland. It was an amazing experience, dancing in front of thousands of people, getting to know the Finnish culture and seeing the sights. We were 5th in Europe and the best in Slovenia. It’s very cold there and nights are basically very bright. Nika: This year we became national champions for the first time. I’ve been dancing for 7 years and we never won the nationals, until this year and I think all the hard work has paid off. Like last year, we are also going to the European championship this year. It will take place in Russia in St. Petersburg. We can’t wait, but we still have a lot of work to do and a lot of practice. What are your plans for the future? Nika: I’ve always wanted to dance at the International competition which takes place in Orlando, Florida. Then I also want to try different dance styles. Maybe hip-hop or Latin-American dance. You can’t live from 30
dancing, because you don’t get paid for your performances unless you are collaborating with celebrities, so It’s hard to make dreams come true, because we even have to pay for competing, even when we’re representing our country. I’m sure every dancer’s dream is to became a member of University of Minnesota dance team which is the best dance team in the world and they’re multiple international winners. My dream is to become a professional dancer and choreographer in the future. Neja: Yeah, I think people sometimes don’t realize how hard dancing really is. It takes insane athleticism, mental discipline, control over your whole body and muscles, and most importantly, we need to express emotions through dancing, to move the audience and to leave a mark on them. Life in Slovenia There are eight regions in Slovenia: Prekmurje, Styria, Carynthia, The Upper Carniola, the Lower Carniola, the Inner Carniola, Bela Krajina and the Littoral. The population of Slovenia is about 2 million. There are a lot of Bosnians in Slovenia. The official language is Slovene and the most common foreign languages you can hear are Bosnian, English, Italian and German. The capital of Slovenia is Ljubljana with the population of about 300,000 people. The longest river is the Sava and the highest mountain is Triglav. It’s 2,864 metres high.

School in Slovenia usually starts at about 8.00 a.m. and ends differently. We have a 20-minute long snack break and a lunch break. There are quite a lot of different activities at our school. A lot of my schoolmates love football but I prefer freestyle scootering and cycling like my friend Aleks.

This is a story about how my family and I went to Lanzarote during last winter holidays. On the first day we landed at the airport and rented a car. As soon as we landed we were amazed upon the strange landscape of the volcanic island. There was very little plants accept cactuses of which there were plenty. We drove to the city of Costa Blanca where we met up with the owner of the apartment we rented. Once we brought all of our stuff inside and settled in, we went to the heart of the city. There we ate the best Indian food ever.
On our second day we decided to go to a local national park called Timanfaya. There we got onto a bus which took us around the park. There we saw over a dozen volcanic structures and the most diverse landscape I have ever seen. There was sand coloured as red as blood and rocks as dark as the darkest night. We were left amazed and shocked. At the centre of the park there was also a restaurant where the chefs would prepare the food on the hot air that was coming from a deep pit. And there wasn’t even a fire at the bottom; the rocks inside the pit were just so hot from the volcanic origin of the island. In the afternoon we went to an incredible beach called Papagayo beach. There we just relaxed and laid in the warm sand. On Friday we decided to go to small a nearby island by the name La Graciosa. When we got there we rented a couple of bikes and picked a cycling track. It was quite rocky but the view was amazing and the weather was perfect. After about 42
an hour of cycling we came to a beach. It was the most amazing and breathtaking beach I have ever seen. We stopped there for about 45 minutes and I even went swimming in the ocean. The water was quite cold and the waves were very strong so I didn’t stay in the water for very long. After that we finished our bike ride and returned to our island.
We heard that there was this huge local trade fair in a nearby city so we went to see it. It was in a small town called Teguise so almost all of the streets were crowded. Local craftsmen were selling their products. There you could get almost anything. From cheeses, pastry and soaps to wallets, magnets and porcelain bowls. There were also a few street performers doing amazing tricks and stunts or singing and making beautiful music. After the fair we went to see a few volcanic caves, which were quite impressive, and a fresh water pool in which lives a special species of albino crabs that have no pigment what so ever. On the last day of our stay on Lanzarote we decided to go to an annual carnival. It wasn’t the biggest one on all of the Canary Islands but it was still very big and full of energy. There were so many performers that were so different from one another. There were people dressed up as Japanese samurai, sailors, pirates, fairies and so many drummer groups. There was even a whole group of men dressed as Elvis Presley! There were a couple of floats whit blasting music and even a dragon. We all enjoyed our travel very much. I would highly recommend Lanzarote as a holiday spot to everyone that likes breath-taking landscapes, a rich history and culture and sunny weather. Jan Gosenca, 8d

The sea was pretty cold but I went swimming anyway. Once while I was swimming a fish called the weaver fish stung me. It hurt so much. This is the most poisonous fish in the Adriatic sea. People who live there told me I had a lot of bad luck, because they’ve been swimming there ever since they were children and this fish has never stung them. In the end everything was all right.

Hello! My name is Peter Peterson. I know my name and surname are funny, but that's not important now. Something strange happened and I don’t know what to do. I think it was about a week ago but my mum told me that it’s already been a year since then. I finished my school lessons and me and my friends decided to go climbing on the school roof. Yes, we were teenagers and we just had to do stupid things. It was super fun. One of us even had a spray for painting, so we had fun with it, too. We were playing “The games of the brave” like we call it. With those games we were trying to see who is the bravest of us all. In one round we were jumping from one roof to another. It was a pretty big gap and everybody did it… except me. Now you probably already imagine what happened. I failed the jump and landed very badly. I hit the corner of the roof with my head. But this isn’t the worst thing that happened. When I hit the roof, I just… bounced away. It’s hard to describe it. And the roof was changing its colour. First it was black, then it went blue and suddenly it was red, then it was orange, then green, then purple and then the colourchanging stopped with white. I was very scared. I looked around myself. I looked at my friends. They were standing totally still. Nobody moved. Then I saw one of my friends named Charles flying in the air. He was standing still, too. It looked like he just jumped and then… the time stopped. I realized that the time was frozen. I looked back to the roof. But the roof disappeared! And instead of it there was a giant mirror. I saw some kind of a flat in it… Wait! It was my flat! 57
I eventually realized that! And on the floor of that flat there was a strange shining sign. I felt like I knew it, but I didn’t know where from. The sign was white just like the roof before. And then I noticed… I wasn’t flying through the air anymore. I was standing still, like my friends. It was a strange feeling. I felt very weak because I couldn’t move. I was just looking at the mirror. And then it exploded with a strange red light. I started moving again. I was falling nearer and nearer to the ground. My friends were still frozen in time. I thought I would hit the ground but I didn’t. I actually fell through the ground! I was falling and falling and looking at the ground above me. Then I looked down and suddenly I saw my feet standing on the floor of our flat. I quickly looked up again but there was no ground above me anymore. There was the ceiling of our flat. I was in our flat. I looked around myself. Everything was dark… except one place. It was the kitchen. I decided to go there. When I arrived I saw a mirror. The same mirror as before, just smaller. In it there were my friends, frozen in time. And in front of the mirror there was… that strange sign shining white. I was so scared! Then I noticed that the living room was shining too! At first I didn’t want to go there, but at last I did. When I came there I nearly fainted, On the floor, there was my mum’s body and above it that sign was flying and shining. It suddenly started spinning, faster and faster. And then it stopped. Suddenly there was another light in the space. It looked like it was shining from my right hand. I rolled up my sleeves and yes, it was shining from my arm. There was that strange sign shining on my hand. I hadn’t noticed that sign on my hand before that day but it was there on my skin. I was frightened like a wild animal. Suddenly a lot of light travelled out of the sign and stopped somewhere in the air. The sign on my hand went dark again. The light was changing its shape and I didn’t know what was happening but then it stopped. It was the shape of… a ghost! Then from the sign above my mum came another ghost. These were my mum and dad’s ghosts They were following me and they were saying: ”Come with us, Pete! Come with us!” They called me that when I was little, but now they were ghosts. I ran as fast as I could, but I was too slow. They caught me and everything started shaking and went white. Then I woke up in my bed. I got up and went to the kitchen where mum was preparing breakfast. I asked her if this was real or if these were just dreams and she answered that it had happened a year ago. That surprised me! I asked her how could that happen and instead of an answer she just touched me. But her hand went through my body and everything went white again. I woke up in hospital. My head hurt. My mum was sitting next to me. She asked me if I had bad dreams and I said “Yes.” But then I 58
noticed that she had red eyes. I screamed. I felt very weak but I ran away anyway. She was laughing, but I was not. I was terrified. I ran as far as I could. So now I’m here hidden in a corner hoping that mum won’t find me. Oh, wait, that’s her voice! Mum: ”Peter! Peter Peterson! Where are you? Peter! Pete! Where are you?!” Peter: ”I’m here, mum!” Mum: “Oh, Peter! I’m sorry. I didn’t want to scare you so much. I just wanted to make a joke so I put red lenses in my eyes. It was funny for me but obviously not for you. Come here, I’ll explain you everything…” So, yes, then she really explained me everything. Those Games of the brave were real. When I hit the roof it was real, too. But then I fainted. So everything that happened after that moment was just my brain’s fantasy. All until I woke up in hospital. Meanwhile I was dreaming they drove me to hospital. That’s because I damaged my head when I hit the roof. I had an operation then. So now I’m here in a hospital bed. I already feel better than when I woke up, but I still need to rest. I wrote this story because I felt very bored here in hospital and because these dreams were very interesting. But also very scary. I’m 54 years old now and this happened a long time ago. I just got a new job but it was in another state. So me and my three-year old son moved there and the house looked very nice on the outside and on the inside, too. But all of the neighbours were acting weird. We lived there for about a month. But then things started getting really strange.
There were times when I was working or watching TV and my son would come up to me and ask: “Who’s the lady in the bathroom?” I said: “Nobody.” I even showed him the empty bathroom. One night I was sleeping when I suddenly heard footsteps coming towards my room and I had my back turned towards the door. Then someone came into my room I thought it was my son. I asked: “What do you want?” He wouldn’t respond. I got up and looked at the door but I saw nobody. I went into my son’s room. He was still sleeping. I went back to sleep. About a week later I saw that one of the planks on the porch was moved a bit. I moved it and found a ladder that was leading down to some sort of a tunnel. I went down and it was a small tunnel and at the end of it there was a gravestone. I was shocked and left the house as soon as I could. Anej Mlakar, 7d

We were on the top of a tower. I was standing on the edge and Marcus was standing beside me. There were Maria and Billy, too. It was very dark and we were listening to the song Sometimes good guys don’t wear white. We had so much fun that we forgot to worry about all the troubles. We love hanging out together. After a while we heard a loud scream come from the building across the street. Billy wanted to go down and check what was happening but we were all scared as hell. I don’t know how but he convinced us to follow him. None of us thought that this was a good idea. We opened the door because it was unlocked. Marcus called us from the balcony. He saw a hanged man through the window. We got scared even more when Maria screamed. When we came to her we saw a woman covered with blood. All this was happening in a row. We all thought that this was very strange like that series Stranger Things, you know. Like yesterday we saw red foot-prints. We thought that it was just paint but now we may think it was blood. Marcus called the police. They came and we explained everything. The next day we saw a mist at out hanging place. Billy heard a door lock. I was very scared. Then we saw a ghost. Then it all came to me. All the strange events. It was a ghost. We called the police immediately. Maria asked around if anyone knew a person who could deal with a ghost. We called Master Lee.
