WHAT IS A

Petoskey Stone?

HEXAGONARIA PERCARINATA, COMMONLY KNOWN AS A PETOSKEY STONE, IS A FASCINATING FOSSIL WITH A UNIQUE APPEARANCE AND A COMPELLING HISTORY. DATING BACK 350 MILLION YEARS, THESE STONES ARE THE FOSSILIZED REMAINS OF ANCIENT CORAL POLYPS. THEIR DISTINCTIVE FEATURES INCLUDE TIGHTLY PACKED, SIX-SIDED CORALLITES, EACH WITH A DARK CENTER OR "EYE" SURROUNDED BY THIN RADIATING LINES.

The stone's name has its roots in Native American history. In 1787, a French fur trader and his Ottawa wife named their son Pet-O-Sega, meaning "Rays of the Rising Sun" in the Ottawa language. Pet-OSega became a successful businessman, landowner, and well-respected Ottawa Chief. In 1873, a small settlement on the nearby Bear River was named Petoskey in his honor, cementing the connection between the man, stone, and town.

As Petoskey developed into a popular Victorian-era tourist destination, these unique fossils became sought-after souvenirs. The pattern within each cell of the Petoskey Stone resembles the "rays of the rising sun," creating a romantic link to the area's origins and its namesake.

Plus, “I’m bringing you a Petoskey Stone” was much more endearing than “Wait until you see the hexagonaria percarinata I got you.”

In June of 1965, the Petoskey Stone was named Michigan’s official State Stone, and Miss Ella Jane Petoskey, the only living grandchild of Chief Petoskey, attended the formal signing. In the city that bears his name, a bronze statue of the Chief stands on a bluff overlooking Little Traverse Bay –found on Lewis Street, near the Perry Hotel. As you explore the shores and landscapes of Northern Michigan, keep an eye out for these natural treasures that embody both beauty and history.

Tips

THINK SPRING!

1

Many enthusiasts consider spring to be the best time for rockhounding, as the melting ice churns up the shoreline and uncovers hidden specimens. However, Petoskey Stone hunting is good from the spring thaw until the first snowfall later in the year, offering ample opportunities to discover unique treasures along the coast.

HAPPINESS IS IN THE HUNT

While Petoskey Stones are commonly found in this area, hunting requires patience, determination, and an eagle eye. Take your time and enjoy the experience of hunting for stones with friends and family. During your search, consider picking up any trash you see along the way to help keep our community clean.

3 2 Search

WET > DRY

Dry Petoskey Stones often appear as ordinary limestone, ranging in color from light to dark grey. The distinctive, hexagonal “rays of the rising sun” pattern emerges when the rock’s surface is wet, which is why it’s easier to spy Petoskey Stones along the shore or by wading out into the water. If you’re hunting in a dry area, carry a water bottle to spray likely candidates to bring out that pattern. Or consider it for a rainy day adventure!

PROTECT YOUR FEET

Many of the best rockhounding locations are found along rocky shorelines, so protecting your feet is essential. Consider bringing waterproof shoes to allow you to explore the beach comfortably.

SHOP SMALL

If your search is unsuccessful or you don’t have time to hunt, there’s no need to worry. Several local shops sell polished Petoskey Stones as well as unpolished stones with polishing kits. You can also take home handmade jewelry, ornaments, drawer pulls, wine stoppers, and other gift items made from our local stone. 4 5

With pristine lakes and miles of coastline, boating is one of the most popular ways to explore this region. And while Lake Michigan’s Little Traverse Bay tends to be a central hub for boating activity, you are never far from an inland lake, with Lake Charlevoix, Walloon Lake, Crooked Lake, and the Inland Waterway all within a few miles of one another. Consider renting a kayak or standup paddleboard for a serene float, or crank up the power with a speedboat, pontoon, or jet ski rental. Of course, there are also a plethora of local harbors to dock your own boat as well.

Contrasting the thrill of boating, page 26 introduces some of the best beaches in the Petoskey Area, where lazy, relaxing beach days take top priority. Sandy

shores, perfect for sandcastles, beach volleyball, and sunbathing, can be found wherever your trip takes you.

There are plenty of ways to stay active and enjoy the outdoors, too. Hundreds of miles of trails for hiking and biking are some of the top reasons many return year after year. Page 28 gives you a checklist of sights to see along the Little Traverse Wheelway, a scenic 26-mile bike ride between Harbor Springs and Charlevoix, going directly through Bay View, Petoskey, and Bay Harbor along the way. And for golf enthusiasts, make sure to read up on page 34 for all you need to know about golfing in this beautiful area – often referred to as some of the most picturesque links in Michigan.

Catching the Breeze on a BOAT CRUISE

UPON YOUR ARRIVAL IN THE PETOSKEY AREA, YOU REALIZE YOU’RE SURROUNDED BY BLUE. GLITTERING SWATHS OF FRESHWATER IN CERULEAN, TURQUOISE, AND COBALT SHADES MEET YOUR EYE AT EVERY TURN. FORGET DRIVING —YOU WANT TO BE OUT RIDING THE LAKE MICHIGAN WAVES. BUT, IF YOU DON’T HAVE A STURDY ENOUGH VESSEL TO HANDLE THE BIG LAKE, THAT’S OUT OF THE QUESTION… OR IS IT?

Ferries used to be a popular and necessary way of transporting people and goods across Little Traverse Bay. Their usage died out around the mid-1900s, and driving became the norm.

However, a few Michiganders recently revived the Little Traverse Bay Ferry Company. Since opening in 2020, over 20,000 people have been ferried amongst their ports in Petoskey, Harbor Springs, and Bay Harbor, and they’re making sure you can get out into the bay, even if you don’t have your own private vessel.

LTB Ferry Co. owns two boats: the Miss Lauren, which seats 49 passengers, and the Harbor Princess, a 149-passenger ferry. The Harbor Princess hosts sunset cruises on Lake Michigan’s Little Traverse Bay, which has quickly become a popular summer activity for both locals and visitors. With a full bar and snacks available, commentary about the region by the captain and crew, and the area’s showstopping million-dollar sunsets, it’s hard to beat. The boat can also be rented out for private events.

“We do recommend getting your tickets a little bit in advance,” advises Chris Chamberlain, owner and captain.

“Especially on some of those really busy days in July.”

The Miss Lauren, LTB Ferry Co.’s other vessel, taxis passengers regularly between ports in Bay Harbor, Petoskey, and Harbor Springs. This is a great way to avoid traffic and explore each of these beautiful communities by boat. Options are available for one-way, round-trip, and around-the-bay tickets – learn more about transportation via the Miss Lauren on page 41.

Speaking of water taxis, you can also take a tour of the Harbor Springs shoreline on the Pointer Boat, a restoration of the water taxis that serviced this area decades ago. Originally built in 1934, this historic boat was restored and extensively upgraded in 1989 and continues to be maintained in pristine condition today. Tours depart from the Pier Restaurant in downtown Harbor Springs and route along the

shoreline of historic neighborhoods, including Harbor Point and Wequetonsing, sharing Harbor Springs’ unique maritime history. Private charters for up to 12 guests are also available with the Pointer Boat and can be catered by the Pier Restaurant.

Some considerations for ferry passengers: Capt. Chamberlain suggests checking the weather forecast for your trip. You’re not as protected from the wind as you might be on an inland lake, so plan and dress accordingly. If possible, purchase tickets in advance to avoid a sold-out day and, of course, enjoy yourself. Isn’t the water what we’re all here for?

PETOSKEY STATE PARK

Biking the Wheelway

From Charlevoix to Harbor Springs

BICYCLING IS AN INCREDIBLY POPULAR ACTIVITY IN THE PETOSKEY AREA, AND THERE’S A STANDOUT TRAIL THAT BEATS THEM ALL FOR RECREATIONAL CYCLING: THE LITTLE TRAVERSE WHEELWAY.

Expertly maintained by the Top of Michigan Trails Council, the route is a 26-mile paved trail between Charlevoix and Harbor Springs that meanders along Little Traverse Bay through Bay Harbor, Petoskey, and Bay View. The trail is home to some of this area’s most unparalleled views of Lake Michigan. Primarily used by cyclists, the route is open to walkers, runners, and rollerbladers as well, with ample signage to guide you along.

Before you set off on your ride, it’s important to know that a 1-mile section of path between East Park and Magnus Park was, unfortunately, damaged due to erosion and remains closed as of 2025. There is an unofficial Wheelway detour onto US-31 around the erosion zone; however, the detour isn’t recommended by the Trails Council or Visitors Bureau, especially for children or inexperienced cyclists. Pylons on the highway during the summer months are there to protect you, and all cycle traffic should remain on the bay side of the highway regardless of the direction of travel.

7 Incredible Hiking Trails for The Seasons

Avalanche is a challenging hike with a few options for the approach. The easiest route is to take the staircase, located straight up the hill from the parking area, all the way up to the viewing platform. Or, spend some time amongst the shady maples by starting your ascent at the trailhead located on the east side of the park (to the left of the main parking area).

Yes, it’s a steep hike, and you’ll need to bring water, but the payoff is incredible. Hikers are rewarded with a breathtaking view of Lake Charlevoix straight from a painting. Words can’t describe how the verdant greenery contrasts with the deep ultramarine water.

Petoskey State Park has a few trails, depending on your mood. If you’d like a moderately strenuous hike/snowshoe, the one-mile Portage Trail is just right for you. It winds across and between small, wooded dunes at the south end of the park. And, if you’d like to really get your heart pumping, try the half-mile Old Baldy Trail, closer to the north end of the park across from the Dunes Campground. You’ll be rewarded with fabulous views of Little Traverse Bay. The Portage Trail can be steep in some areas, and Old Baldy climbs to a height of over 700 feet. Ice cleats will help you keep a grip in slippery spots during the winter.

Just east of Petoskey, McCune Nature Preserve is a place of pure beauty. There are 3.5 miles of easy-to-moderate trails crisscrossed by Minnehaha Creek, a designated trout stream. McCune encompasses a variety of habitats, so there’s always something different to look at, no matter what season you choose to frequent the preserve. You’ll see abundant hardwood species on your walk, like maples, beeches, and red oaks, pass through the cool shade of a cedar swamp, and catch some sun in a beautiful, snow-covered meadow. The footbridges over Minnehaha Creek are picturesque additions to the park.

4

THORNE SWIFT NATURE PRESERVE – HARBOR SPRINGS

Good for: Spring / Summer / Fall

Groomed trails in Winter: No

At only 30 acres, Thorne Swift is a fairly small preserve. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in character and beauty. The first thing you’ll notice when entering the parking lot is the caretaker’s cottage, with a caretaker who provides seasonal guided programs and advice on enjoying the preserve. Thorne Swift includes a rare stretch of public Lake Michigan shoreline. The beach isn’t huge, but it’s also not typically crowded, and there are great views of Harbor Springs and dune habitat.

Over a mile of fairly easy paths lead through varied terrain, including upland dunes and a cedar swamp with elevated trails. There’s a pond observation platform for wildlife viewing and a dune observation deck to take in the shoreline. Be sure to note the giant purple-stemmed angelica that grow throughout the park.

(Note: Thorne Swift Trails are open 10 AM – sunset typically from April – November)

5 BEAR RIVER RECREATION AREA – PETOSKEY

Good for: Winter / Spring / Summer / Fall

Groomed trails in Winter: No

Right in the heart of Petoskey lies the Bear River Valley Recreation Area that borders the Bear River as it rushes towards Lake Michigan’s Little Traverse Bay. A unique link in the North Country Trail system, it’s one of the most popular trails in town, for good reason. There are ample opportunities not just to hike but to sit down and enjoy a picnic lunch, fish, and watch whitewater kayakers ply the waters of downtown Petoskey.

The Bear River was once a center of industry, lined with sawmills and heavily dammed. Now, the river offers peace and contemplation away from the bustle of downtown, with 1.5 miles of trails meandering through the recreation area.

If you continue your hike towards the river’s mouth and bay, you’ll find yourself in Bayfront Park, with the view of an open body of glittering water on sunny days. Keep walking northeast on the sidewalk and enjoy the waterfall in Sunset Park, a scenic overlook for pictures, and a staircase down to the beach.

WALDRON FEN NATURE PRESERVE – ALANSON

Good for: Winter / Spring / Summer / Fall

Groomed trails in Winter: No

7

OFFIELD FAMILY VIEWLANDS – HARBOR SPRINGS

Good for: Winter / Spring / Summer / Fall

Groomed trails in Winter: Yes

If you’re seeking a striking landscape, look no further than Alanson’s Waldron Fen Nature Preserve. Fens are wetlands fed by mineral-rich waters, and in summer, this fen is home to over 100 bird species, including sandhill cranes, wood ducks, and a myriad of songbirds. Orchids, lobelia, mosses, wild rosemary, and other water-loving plants share the stage with snapping turtles and newts. In winter, the tawny waving heads of wild grasses and sedges make this a stunning place to visit.

Waldron Fen has about two miles of trails encircling the wetland and a viewing platform to get a broader view of the preserve. It’s not a very strenuous hike, but you can end up on some muddy terrain, so waterproof boots are suggested. Keep an eye out for the cheery red berries of winterberry holly, a shrub that decorates the trail margins. The holly, like other wetland plants, loves to keep its feet wet and provides winter food for many bird species.

A golf course turned into a nature preserve? Absolutely. Little Traverse Conservancy’s Offield Family Viewlands contains over four miles of trails and counting in the 280-acre parcel. Even better are the vantage points that make this Harbor Springs preserve an area favorite, with scenic views of the Little Traverse Bay and the Inland Waterway.

What are the trails like? Imagine meandering across rolling hills with spectacular, wide-open vistas. Those in a meditative headspace can walk the reflection labyrinth, accessible by a barrier-free trail off the lower parking area. Or visit the Viewlands at night for spectacular views of the night sky.

WHAT IS THE TUNNEL OF TREES?

6

Can’t Miss Stops Along

the Tunnel of Trees

This famous stretch of scenic highway named the Tunnel of Trees follows M-119 (Lake Shore Drive) and extends 20 miles from Harbor Springs north to Cross Village in Michigan’s northern tip of the Lower Peninsula. This winding narrow road follows the Lake Michigan shoreline from atop scenic bluffs, and the name “Tunnel of Trees” comes from the canopy of trees that cover or nearly cover the road for much of the journey. As you drive along and look out over Lake Michigan, you can even see Beaver Island and area lighthouses in the distance on a clear day. This stretch of road is famously trekked in the fall months but is equally beautiful for a drive in the spring and in the summer. In the springtime, you can see blankets of trillium throughout the forest as you drive the road.

YOU’VE HEARD OF THE TUNNEL OF TREES… BUT THE BEST PART (OR MAYBE SECOND BEST) IS MAKING FUN STOPS ALONG THE WINDING WAY. AS YOU NAVIGATE THIS MICHIGAN WONDER OF TREES THROUGH HARBOR SPRINGS, GOOD HART, AND CROSS VILLAGE, BE SURE TO CHECK OUT A COUPLE OF THESE GREAT PLACES.

DOWNTOWN

HARBOR SPRINGS

Harbor Springs is a picture-perfect, quaint small town. There are many little shops to visit and spots to find unique keepsakes, like at HANNI Gallery, for unique handmade jewelry and other gifts. This was once called the Birchwood Inn and still has its bones with a renovated mid-century modern boost and an OTIS flair all its own. The lobby’s General Store has grab-and-go food and drink items, and the Fireplace Lounge is a great stop for a cocktail or even dinner on select nights.

TRILLIUM WOODS COFFEE

This little coffee shop along M-119 is just before Middle Village and is great for espresso, coffee, baked goods, and other gifts. Its décor and seating make for a relaxing stop – there is even outdoor seating.

POND HILL FARM

So many great things and times to be had at Pond Hill Farm in the fall! Just enjoying a walk around the farm or down their trails is free of charge. During their fall festivities, you can try out pumpkin bowling and pumpkin smashing, grab a bite to eat, and browse their market to pick out some goodies. Don’t forget to search their pumpkin patch and pick your favorite!

The entire Petoskey Area has a rich history woven throughout it, but this is especially true for Cross Village. Since its early settlement, it has been home to many different people. Originally called Waganakisi by the Odawa Indians who settled the land, some of their descendants still inhabit the Petoskey area to this day. The unique lunch and dinner restaurant, Legs Inn, is a famous spot (and can get rather famously busy) that serves up the most delicious Polish and American cuisine. Pierogis and golumpki, yes please! They generally are open from May to October each year.

Explore History Along Petoskey’s Unique Trail: The Inland Waterway

Michigan has many monikers, like the “Great Lakes State.” According to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), it is also known as the “Trails State,” with thousands of seasonal routes crisscrossing the state – from hiking and biking to paddling and skiing. The scenic trails throughout the Petoskey Area provide a wealth of recreational opportunities for locals and visitors while also offering unique historical perspectives – a trip back in time, as it were. As you venture along these various routes, be on

the lookout for markers, museums, and other remnants of days gone by, which are sure to enhance (and educate) your experience.

Long before Northern Michigan became a tourist mecca, Native Americans avoided the often-treacherous waters in the Straits of Mackinac by paddling a series of connecting lakes and rivers today known as the Inland Waterway – the largest such route in the state. More than 50 encampments have been unearthed along this route, including one in Ponshewaing on the north side of Crooked Lake, with artifacts dating back over 3,000 years.

This 38-mile water route spans Emmet and Cheboygan counties (including the communities of Conway, Oden, Ponshewaing, Alanson, Indian River, Topinabee, and Cheboygan) and consists of Crooked Lake, Crooked River, Burt Lake, Indian River, Mullet Lake, and the Cheboygan River, before emptying into Lake Huron. With a maintained depth of five feet, the waterway boasts two seasonal locks – one in Cheboygan and one in Alanson, which is also home to the “World’s Shortest Swing Bridge,” originally built in 1901. Each Labor Day, this town hosts an annual bridge walk led by the Rivertown Jazz Band and includes other community activities in Memorial Park.

Open to both motorized and nonmotorized boaters, the Inland Waterway invites a leisurely river experience past quaint homes, historic businesses, and beautiful natural areas where swans, geese, and loons are often seen. The lakes are large enough for water skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, and jet skiing, with several beach areas as well.

In 1957, the State of Michigan erected the Inland Waterway Historic Marker at Burt Lake State Park in Indian River to recognize the importance of this route to early commerce, including fur traders, freight service, and day-long passenger excursions. The Inland Water Route Historical Society was formed in 2004 to research and document the history of this route, operating a museum

on River Street just one block east of US-31 in downtown Alanson (near the swing bridge). Open seasonally, you can visit the Inland Water Route Historical Museum to see photos, artifacts, and special displays about this intricate connection of water trails.

One step into Bay Harbor’s Maple + Batter and you know you’re in for a treat. For one, the place smells like pancakes, which is always a good sign for a restaurant that boasts perpetual brunch. Two, the atmosphere is amazing: the white and gray marble floors and floor-to-ceiling windows give the place a dreamy, airy feeling.

Maple + Batter’s menu is about 95% breakfast, and they knock it out of the park. Expect to encounter pancakes and waffles, French toast and croissants, a variety of omelets and benedicts, breakfast tacos and burritos, beloved biscuits and sausage gravy, and the largest portion of crispy hashbrowns that’s legal in the state of Michigan.

Our favorites? The breakfast charcuterie board (yes!) and candied bacon, their monumental stack of pancakes, Florentine omelet overstuffed with fresh veggies and tomatoes, and the truffle avocado toast complete with pickled red onions, feta cheese, poached eggs, and arugula.

SMALL BATCH AT THE CUPOLA

340 State St., Harbor Springs smallbatchharborsprings.com

Brunch should be robust. We’re talking huge plates of food and sauces that overflow the bounds of plate and reason: brunch spots that turn it up to 11.

In Harbor Springs, Small Batch at the Cupola offers exactly that kind of brunch, inventive and full of flavor for both sweet and savory cravings. They’ve branded themselves an “entertaining food experience,” so imagine a plate of bananas foster French toast filled with cream cheese, smothered in whipped cream, drizzled with bourbon caramel sauce, and topped with fresh strawberries and a decadent scoop of gelato or picture benedicts garden: thick slices of ciabatta topped with rosemary ham, eggs, and a generous portion of Florentine sauce with a side of roasted whole purple and orange carrots and sliced zucchini.

While the menu changes regularly, no matter what you get, it’ll be a reasonable price for a decadent portion. The quirky, delightfully decorated dining room is small, and seating is first-come, firstserved, so make sure to arrive early for your brunch experience.

1 Water St., Boyne City magnumhospitality.com/cafesante

Is escargot brunch food? It is at Boyne City’s Cafe Santé. The casual European-themed restaurant offers daily brunch in its classy, eclectic dining room on Lake Charlevoix. In the summer months, brunch-goers can enjoy the lakeside view from a protected patio and sip a bloody mary or mimosa while waiting for the food to appear.

There’s an assortment of classic brunch fare; however, the croque madame is a real standout. Layer after layer of thinly sliced ham and gruyere are lovingly sandwiched between two slices of brioche and drenched with béchamel sauce, then topped with an egg. It’s a towering brunch sculpture that could easily feed two people. And if you’ve ever had a hankering to order crème brûlée cheesecake at brunch, you don’t have to hold back here.

If you want classy lakeside dining with eclectic choices, Cafe Santé will not steer you wrong. And yes, we took a vote: escargot with morel butter and homemade ciabatta bread is undoubtedly brunch food.

WHAT BETTER PLACE FOR SHOPPING LOCAL? DOZENS OF UNIQUE, LOCALLY OWNED BOUTIQUES AND SHOPS AWAIT YOU – FROM SWEET TREATS AND SOUVENIRS TO CLOTHING AND HOME DÉCOR. LEARN THE STORY OF ONE OF THE PETOSKEY AREA’S BEST-KNOWN BUSINESSES.

CROOKED TREE BREADWORKS

“We started in 1996 in response to a lack of good crusty bread around the Little Traverse Bay region,” reports Crooked Tree Breadworks founder Greg Carpenter. Add delectable scones, crisp shortbreads, buttery croissants, scratch-made cookies (think classics and be sure to try their outstanding Ginger Crinkle Cookies), and a famous Addictive Granola recipe, and you’re guaranteed to leave the bakery with more than you came in for. In 2024, they added a variety of Grab & Go Sandwiches on their own artisan bread and croissants as well.

Crooked Tree Breadworks has become a cornerstone of artisanal baking, not only for the Petoskey Area but all of Northern

Michigan. Their success stems from their commitment to traditional, time-intensive baking methods that have not changed since their inception.

Carpenter was methodical about developing his bread recipes. When he was learning, he had to be, as artisanal bread baking was still primarily a European craft in the 90s. He refined the recipes one variable at a time to create the perfect, crusty loaf.

His baking philosophy centers around a dedication to quality – “Use only ingredients that need to be there. Using the best ingredients and taking our time gets us the quality products we make here at Crooked Tree Breadworks.” This includes everything from selecting only the highest quality flour to bringing out the natural flavors of the wheat by using centuries-old techniques. Their bestsellers? Sourdough loaves and 3 o’clock Baguettes. Addictive

Granola is a pantry staple for people in the know, and the mixed berry scone is a popular item. Try their new salty and sweet Pub Nuts, Orange Balsamic Pecans, and new artisan crackers, too!

TIP – every Wednesday, their team bakes fresh Maple Brioche Cinnamon Rolls! Snag one early since they tend to sell out.

To stay up-to-date on happenings at the bakery, follow their social media @crookedtreebreadworks on Instagram and Facebook. They post daily, highlighting seasonal items, job openings, and all things delicious!

Don’t Skip: Horny Monk (Belgian Dubbel Ale) and their Smash Burgers.

Petoskey’s brewing history dates back over 125 years ago (to 1898) when Petoskey Brewing Company – aka the “Old Brewery” – was opened on present-day M-119. The signature brew coming out of this beverage factory was called Petoskey Sparkle, produced until 1915, when the brewery closed.

ELDER PIPER BEER & CIDER

923 Baxter St., Petoskey elderpiperbeer.com

Don’t Skip: A beer flight to try the beer and cider, Beach Grass Helles Lager, or a snack from the food truck.

New to the Petoskey Area brew scene, Elder Piper Beer & Cider started pouring from their taps in the spring of 2024. Elder Piper is owned and operated by Eeva and Trace Redmond, who have both been in the beer world for over a decade. Now back in Eeva's stomping grounds, they are inspired by all things

Northern Michigan as they create their beer and cider flavors. Elder Piper's cider utilizes their family apple orchard in Bliss, Michigan, which they spent a great amount of time working on before cultivating their brewery.

STIGGS BREWERY & KITCHEN

112 S Park St., Boyne City stiggsbrewingcompany.com

What to expect: A smaller indoor dining room, a live-edge wood bar decorated in colorful bottle caps, and a great patio for outdoor dining.

Don’t Skip: Red Wagon Lager (American Lager) and their Brisket Melt made with house smoked brisket.

As the only brewpub in Boyne City, Stiggs Brewery & Kitchen is the epitome of

Northern Michigan – complete with a burly, bearded, plaid-wearing lumberjack mascot. Housed in the restored 1899 White Timber Logging Company building, the 30 featured taps include Stiggs original brews as well as rotating and seasonal selections from other Michigan breweries.

POND HILL FARM – CAFÉ, WINERY, BREWERY & MARKET

5699 S Lake Shore Dr., Harbor Springs pondhill.com

What to expect: A working farm with a café, market, winery, and brewery all in one. A walk amongst the season’s harvest leads to a café and tasting room with an outdoor beer garden complete with picnic tables and a stage.

Don’t Skip: Pondhilsner (Pilsner) and wood-fired pizzas like classic Pepperoni and the Fun Guy Pizza

Adventure awaits as you taste their beers and ciders with fun in every season: hiking, sledding, gnome house hunt, pumpkin patch in the fall, hayrides, groomed Nordic trails, and more. This all-around family-friendly agritourism destination began in the mid-1990s, starting with a simple fresh produce stand utilizing the old-school honor system at the end of their driveway.

Pond Hill Farm is celebrating 30 years of business in 2025!

With the most terrain in Northern Michigan, including the greatest vertical in lower Michigan at 552 feet, and four terrain parks spread across 435 acres, your family experience awaits. Two lifts opened in the past two years, transforming how guests reach the slopes with the latest lift technology. Interconnect opened in

December 2024 with a focus of smooth and speedy transport; Camelot 6 opened in December 2023, becoming the fastest lift in the Midwest and features weatherproof warming bubbles.

Beyond the slopes, their Nordic Center offers cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat tire biking across more than 16km of maintained trails, plus equipment rentals. For a break from the hill, embrace the thrill of the tubing park, ziplines, the Enchanted Trail twinkling light walking path, horseback riding, and Sno-Go bikes. SKYBRIDGE MICHIGAN

Rise to new heights at SkyBridge Michigan, located at Boyne Mountain Resort in Boyne Falls. In winter, SkyBridge dazzles with Lights in the Sky – a magical display of over 200,000 twinkling lights adorning the world’s

longest timber-towered suspension bridge. Take the chairlift to the top of the mountain, stroll across the bridge, warm up by their firepit, and enjoy a warm beverage from the SkyBridge Food Truck or Eagle’s Nest restaurant, both at the summit.

3

ICE SKATING

There is something incredibly freeing about gliding along the smooth ice on a skating rink – once you find your balance, that is! Both the Winter Sports Park in Petoskey and Avalanche Mountain Preserve in Boyne City have well-maintained outdoor rinks (weather permitting, of course) with skate rentals available. If you’re looking for something indoors, the Petoskey Ice Arena hosts open skate hours and fun events throughout the year.

4

WINTER RAFTING

Did you know there is not just one location to choose from to experience winter rafting in Northern Michigan, but two? Jordan Valley Outfitters in East Jordan and Big Bear Adventures in Indian River will take you out on the rapids for a guided winter river trip. Both will leave you with lasting memories of exploring Michigan’s winter wonderland.

5

WINTER HIKING

The Petoskey Area’s natural beauty beckons in all four seasons, and the winter is just as good a time as any to get out on the trails for a hike. The Little Traverse Conservancy grooms and maintains dozens of local trails and nature preserves in the wintertime. Check out McCune Nature Preserve just outside of Petoskey, Offield Family Viewlands in Harbor Springs, or the Hill Nature Preserve in Boyne City.

Cozy Up This Winter IN THE PETOSKEY AREA

IT’S NOT ALL SKI HILLS AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES; COZY VIBES ARE TUCKED IN EVERY CORNER.

CHEERS AT A LOCAL WINERY

There are 16 wineries in the Petoskey Wine Region, with a delightful selection of red, white, fruit, and even maple wines. Particularly in the winter, chances are high that you will meet the owners themselves as they tell you the virtues of their various blends. If you’re traveling with the family, that works, too, since many of the wineries offer family-friendly activities like snowshoeing, coloring, firepits, and s’mores making.

PAMPER YOURSELF AT A SPA

What better time to take a moment for yourself than while on vacation? The Spa at the Inn at Bay Harbor and The Spa at Boyne Mountain Resort both offer you time to rejuvenate with their facial and massage services, nail and hair care, or full body treatments.

What sets them apart is their setting. Boyne Mountain’s spa is situated at their ski resort and, in addition to the previously mentioned services, offers a cedar sauna, a multi-level facility, steam rooms, and whirlpools.

The Inn at Bay Harbor’s spa is located on-site at their luxury hotel, which lies on the shores of Lake Michigan, with calming, endless views of the water.

SHOP AND DINE LOCAL

Whether you want to window shop or power shop in the Petoskey Area, you won’t be disappointed in the clothing stores, gift shops, galleries, and other locally owned treasure troves. When hunger takes over the need for fabulous buys, you’ll find plenty of options for any size group.

Scope out restaurants with igloo dining like Forty Acres Tavern at Boyne Mountain Resort, or make an evening out of your meal with a full dining experience like the Aonach Mor Moonlight Dinner – complete with sleigh ride to the top of their North Peak Mountain – at The Highlands in Harbor Springs. Hidden gems like the 1911 Restaurant at the Terrace Inn in Bay View or Vintage Chop House at the Inn at Bay Harbor give you a peek inside these cozy, tranquil communities blanketed in snow.

AVALANCHE BAY INDOOR WATERPARK

The biggest (and best!) indoor waterpark in Michigan is located at Boyne Mountain Resort in Boyne Falls. Adrenaline-pumping fun like the Big Couloir is the steepest drop you’ll find at a waterpark, while the Lazy River Adventure is laid back and fit for the family. A dozen rides in balmy 84-degree temperatures, terrific food service, an engaging kids’ area where art projects are created, and a super cool arcade means everyone is happy on this trip.

Where to Stay

DO YOU SEE YOURSELF WHEN YOU CHECK IN?

No matter your preference, there is something for you in the Petoskey Area. It’s also important to consider not only your lodging preferences but also your trip itinerary. Would you rather be in the heart of town or out along the lakeshore? Close to the ski slopes or right on the water? Explore what will work best for you.
