The cereal (kibble) companies would have you believe that there are three age classifications (puppy, adult and senior) and two to four formulations that cover all dogs and cats. The RAW food companies and their followers would have you believe that all dogs are carnivores and all carnivore eat the same diet from the 4 lb. Yorkie which originated in England to the 175 lb. Tibetan Mastiff from China and the water spaniel to the desert dwelling Sloughi.

Make no mistake about it, our animal health care crisis is in large part a crisis of the commercially processed fast food cereal diet -- roughly three quarters of the three-billion plus spend on pet health care in this country goes to treat chronic diseases. Most of these chronic diseases could have been prevented by a change to a species-specific whole food diet. So for those of you who do not have the time for a veterinary nutrition lecture here is what you need to know in a nutshell; 20 rules to follow when selecting a premade food for your pet companion.

1. Know what foods their ancestors ate in their native land during the breeds development.

2. Only feed food that your pet’s great, great, great grand parents would recognize as food.

3. Feed whole food or a mixture of whole foods.

4. If you can’t identify what is in the food don’t feed it to your pet.

5. Do not feed food that is colored.

6. Do not feed food products that have 10 or more Ingredients listed on the label.

7. Do not feed any food that is labeled: For Puppies, Senior or Diet on packaging.

8. Avoid food products that have added or tell you to add supplements.

9. Stay away from foods that pretend to be something they are not. (colored pieces made to look like peas or carrots)

Do not feed any food products that are not stored in a freezer or refrigerator.

Do not feed any food products that have ingredients a 5th grader could pronounce.

12.

Avoid foods sold in a bag or a can and placed on a shelf.

Do not feed food produced in manufacturing plant.

14.

Buy food made by humans not machines.

15.

Avoid buying food from big box stores.

16.

Feed food that will rot if left out for more than three days.

17.

Do not feed food products that are advertised on TV.

18.

Avoid all food that claim to be completely nutritious and balance for all pets.

Avoid any product produce by a company that suggests your pet should eat like it were another type of animal. (wolf or tiger)

20. Once you have determined what your pets native food source was during the development of it breed or breeds, feed a rotation of all of those foods.
