Dear friends of Sano Sansar! You already have in your hands the 15th issue of Sano Sansar. It’s been almost a year since the last magazine, the beginning of the pandemic, of the lockdown, of the hugs and the unbridled kisses! But don’t be discouraged, we will recover everything that makes us feel alive, because as Txarango says: “ living is the attitude of filling life” and that has not yet been stolen from us. The magazine follows the same format as last year, reporting on: Socialité, Outstanding News, Culture, Academic Year and Character (this year, very special one. In 2020 has not all been negative things!). We take this opportunity to send you lots of energy, hugs, kisses and best wishes. Now you can enjoy the magazine!

COVID-19 The pandemic continues to spread around the world, but there is no increase in the number of people infected in Nepal. Why is this?

It has been 12 years since we created our Sano Sansar family in Nepal and this has been the first year that we have not been able to celebrate it all together. For the moment Nepal doesn’t allow the entry of tourists, except those who go trekking. The desire to celebrate the anniversary was not lacking, so everyone got down to work and prepared a fun party: dances, songs, theatre and some other games, to spend a fun afternoon. As always, to finish the party, they made a great dinner and a fingerlicking birthday cake!

Football match One of the things we have been most grateful for has been the trips out of the house during this year of pandemic. Since we have been allowed to walk around, we have been able to enjoy nature, play games and spend more time outdoors. Of course, wearing the mask at times! In Nepal, it is not compulsory to wear it in the street.

ONLINE CLASSES The academic course 2020 has had a different methodology compared to other years, as in most of the rest of the world, schools have had to adapt to Covid’s restrictive measures. As a result, most of the academic courses in Nepal have been done online. However, in December, face-to-face classes resumed in most schools. It has been a difficult year, especially in terms of following the classes. Some students do not have an internet connection, others do not have computers at home and others live in remote areas where the connection does not reach them. Fortunately, the schools have been flexible and have not demanded the same involvement from the students. At Sano Sansar we have been able to follow the classes satisfactorily. We have made use of all the spaces at home, and we have divided the students into all the rooms to follow the online clases. We also had to extend the internet connection for better connectivity.

What does the Nepalese media say about Covid?
“Nepal has not recorded any death related on Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, the public health ministry said. This was the third consecutive day that the country has recorded no deaths from complications caused by the coronavirus disease.”
Kathmandu Post, (February 22, 2021). “A total of one million doses of coronavirus vaccine will be imported on February 23. From the airport, the vaccine will be taken to Teku freezing centre for storage. The vaccine will be administered to those over 55 years of age from 7 March.”

BIKASH INTERVIEW Bikash is 24 years old, he is one of the young boys in the house who is already out of Sano Sansar. He is finishing pharmacy studies and was recently infected by coronavirus. He is the first case we know firsthand in Nepal and we decided to interview him to understand how the virus is affecting the country and how they are experiencing it.
When did you get infected? On the 16th of February.
What symptoms have you had?
My symptoms have been different as compared to those that people have when they are infected with Covid. I mainly had muscular pains, especially in my legs and swollen eyes.
Do you know anyone in your circle who has also been infected? No, I don’t know anyone.
After you found out you had Covid, did you know what protocol you had to follow?
Yes, the doctors told me that I had to confine myself to my room for 10 days and avoid contact with other people. If I had to go outside, I had to wear a mask.
And have you complied with it?
Yes, I have followed it correctly, as it is the only way to control the virus and prevent it from spreading.
Why do you think the virus is affecting Europe more than Nepal?
Maybe it’s because we have a stronger immune system, also because the average population is younger and the younger they are, the stronger they are. But it could also be the diet, dhal bhat is our main food and has many nutritional properties. Perhaps the method of counting the infected is flawed and we do not know the exact number of
infected people.
As a pharmacist, do you think the virus is not being taken seriously in Nepal?
At the beginning of the pandemic, when we were confined, most people were worried about the virus, it was new, and we didn’t know how it spread. People were careful to follow the restrictions rigorously. But when the lockdown was over, the virus seemed to have disappeared. Now, it seems that there is no pandemic, few people are wearing masks and we are living normal lives.
Do you think the Nepalese government has implemented enough measures to prevent infection?
The government has not implemented enough measures, it’s a mess! The problem we have now is that the state has reduced the number of tests to detect the virus and there are probably infected people who don’t know it.
Are people in Nepal afraid of the coronavirus?
Of course, because health is wealth, and everyone loves his or her life. When we are healthy, we can live longer. Another worrying fact is that if a person is seriously affected by the virus, we don’t have enough health facilities in Nepal to treat them.
Would you get vaccinated against Covid if you had the option, but it was not compulsory?
If I got infected with the virus again, then I would definitely get the vaccine.

CULTURAL FEST This was the first year that we didn’t celebrate the festival in the street. Do you remember when we used to go around the neighborhood singing and dancing in front of the neighbor’s houses? Well, this year we had to celebrate it at home. As you can see, everyone wears the tika, a red pigment made from natural products that the eldest man of the family, in this case Rupak, puts on the foreheads of the rest of the family. The gesture is a sign of blessing.
Why is it red?
It symbolizes the blood that binds the family together.

We are happy and sad at the same time that we have more and more young people outside our home. Because we know each time we will have fewer children in Sano Sansar, but the ties that we have created between all of us will be forever. This acamedic school year 2020- 2021 has been very strange. Most of the school year has been followed virtually, like here in our country. But with the difference that in Nepal they did not go to school in person until the 6th of December 2020. Imagine the students who did not have a good internet connection or even the opportunity, or access to a communication network, as is the case for students living in remote areas. Luckily this was not our case. For this reason, Nepal is considering the possibility of delaying the course a little more, so that

students can pass the course with a minimum level of achievement. A conventional Nepalese primary and secondary school year should end in March, but because of virus, it will probably end in April this year. For this reason, the grade shown for each student is the one they are currently in, but which they will soon finish. With the exception of those who have finished XII and are still waiting to find out what they want to study. Once they have chosen higher studies, then they will have to leave Sano Sansar nest and start on a new stage like the rest of the young people who are already emancipated.

We can finally announce it! We still don’t know if it will be a boy or a girl, and in fact we won’t know until the day of the birth, because that’s what his/her parents have decided. Rojina is expected to be due at the end of this month, beginning of April. This is just around the corner!
Shall we place bets? What do you think the baby will be? Recently some of the Sano Sansar girls prepared a baby shower for Rojina and Rupak. As you know it is a party that pregnant couples throw to reveal the sex of the baby. In this case, nothing was revealed because no one knows if it will be a boy or a girl, we just celebrated life and the fact that soon we will be one more!
