Once an egg is laid, its hatching potential cannot be improved, only maintained. For that reason, hatching eggs must be kept under optimal conditions to prevent egg deterioration. Applying heat treatment during egg storage

One way to reduce the negative effects of egg storage is by applying heat treatment. In nature, a mother hen lays one egg every day until her nest is complete. As a result, the older eggs are warmed each time the hen returns to her nest to lay the next egg. These eggs thus undergo a short period of incubation every day. In a commercial hatchery, the same effect can be reached by applying heat treatment cycles during the storage time.

Hatching eggs are usually stored on the farm for one to four days after being laid. Upon arrival at the hatchery, they are kept in a storage room for several days before incubation starts. The total storage duration depends on the egg collection frequency, hatchery capacity and market demand.

The longer eggs are stored, the higher the losses in hatchability and egg quality. Subsequently, chick quality and post-hatch performance will deteriorate. In addition, the incubation planning that comes with different storage times is challenging.

1. Restored viability The X-Streamer™ Re-Store warms up hatching eggs for short periods of time during storage to restore the viability of the embryos. Thanks to the unique OvoScan™ technology, it guarantees a controlled, gradual and precise heating and cooling of the eggs. All values and setpoints are automatically adjusted to optimise the process according to the needs of the specific batch of eggs. This makes the Re-Store process very accurate, easy and error-free while also ensuring highly consistent results.

Inside the X-Streamer™ Re-Store, the number of viable cells is restored. This positively impacts hatch results with minimised embryonic mortality, as well as improved hatchability, chick quality and post-hatch performance for varying egg species and egg ages. Moreover, the eggs will start incubation in a more homogeneous embryonic development stage, which leads to better uniformity and chick yield.

Simplified planning When storing eggs in the traditional way, hatchery staff needs extra time to deal with the variations that come with the incubation of short-stored and long-stored eggs, such as adjusting incubation times, pre-heating programs, takeoff times, etc. With X-Streamer™ Re-Store, there is no need to compensate the impact of storage by applying different procedures. This results in a simplified incubation planning, which makes egg management much easier.

Engineering inspired by nature

Biological background f An embryo’s cell division begins from the moment the egg is fertilised. Thanks to the mother hen’s body temperature, embryonic development continues and the embryo remains viable. f At point of lay, the embryo consists of 80,000 to 120,000 cells. Once the egg is laid and the embryo is exposed to an ambient environment, cell division stops. Over time, the cells start to decay and the cell count drops. f Despite every effort made in commercial egg storage facilities to achieve the ‘physiological zero’ – or the temperature at which there is no cell division or decay, it is well-known that hatch losses increase with each extra day of storage. f As seen in nature, periodic warming during storage restores the cell count, guaranteeing optimum viability. The process also takes all embryos to a more advanced development stage, improving their robustness and ensuring the best possible uniformity at the start of incubation.

Many have tried to avoid viability loss by heating up hatching eggs in a non-dedicated machine. However, consistent results are hard to achieve that way. If the temperature is slightly too high or if the eggs are heated for too long, the embryos will die when placed back into the egg holding room. If the temperature is too low, the treatment will fail to achieve any results. An accurate system is required to precisely control the heat treatment cycles.
