SOUTH DOWNS OPEN 10 OCTOBER 2026 - 13 MARCH 2027 Petersfield Museum and Art Gallery

OVER 150 ARTISTS CELEBRATING THE BEAUTY OF THE SOUTH DOWNS

Daniel Al-Azzawi (9) Seven Sisters, 2026 Pencilon paper 23 x 32 cm framed

I drew the Seven Sisters with pencils because I really like the South Downs. I enjoy seeing the cliffs and the beautiful countryside. I wanted to show how special this place is to me.

Anna Cousins (10)

Sunrise on the South Downs, 2026 Airdry clay 17 x 10 x 7 cm

I have been walking the South Downs with my family and we always have adventures. This sculpture shows the hills stretching into the distance which I have seen AND climbed! Sometimes we have also seen sheep and lambs.

Benjy Cousins (13)

Over the Downs to Marquise 1917, 2026 Pencil on paper 31 x 38 cm framed

This work connects with my experience of the South Downs, as I have been walking it with my family. The stunning views of the Downs almost give a sense of flying when you stand on one of the hills. I was inspired by reading the World War One aviator Capt. W. E. Johns' Biggles books, to create this drawnfrom memory sketch. I am practiced at drawing Aeroplanes because I love everything about them. I have visited lots of different aircraft museums including IMW Duxford and studied many books with historic photos and diagrams of plane types.

Eleanor Eaglesham (6)

Sunset between Autumn and Winter, 2025 Watercolour 24 x 28 cm framed

I paint with my mummy in the morning before school. I can see the hills from my bedroom window.

Ada Howard (11)

Willow, the South Downs Hare, 2025 Felt 12.5 cm

I have seen lots of hares in the South Downs and they are so beautiful so I decided to make a needle felted model of one, I named her Willow after one of my favourite trees.

Max Jay (10)

Bluebells, 2026 Photograph 33 x 43 cm framed

I will often lie down in the grass and on the forest floor to get close to what I’m photographing.

Faris Jones (12) Bold, 2026 Photograph 24 x 29 cm framed

There are many sorts of insects that I have photographed, but this caterpillar caught my eye. The colours of the flower and the caterpillar were striking with the vibrant yellow and I obliged to take a photo.

Kedric Lam (5)

Happy Tiger and Flowers, 2025 Oil pastel 53 x 43 cm framed

I saw pretty flowers there - yellow, blue and green ones, like in my picture. The tiger looks strong like the big hills. It makes me happy, just like playing outside!

Oscar Newton (5)

Camping Under the Sun, 2026 Acrylic on board 23 x 23 cm framed

My painting shows my love of adventure and being outdoors in the South Downs countryside.

Lila Petherick (15) St Catherine's Hill, 2026 Acrylic on canvas 19 x 24 cm framed

St Catherine's Hill is a famous Winchester landmark. I love the scenery and the fact that it is beautiful at all times of the year. The bold colours I've used reflect my impression of the western border of the South Downs Way.

Ted Pye (13)

Thorns and Beak, 2026 Photograph 33 x 43 cm framed

My school is on top of the South Downs and there are fields and hedgerows beyond the playing fields where I point my camera to catch the birds foraging and gathering up nesting materials.

Wren Pye (11) Spirals, 2026 Photograph 33 x 43 cm framed

I like to use my camera to get really close to details, small things and tiny moments.

Charlie Ralfe (15)

Light Over the Downs, 2026 Acrylic and gouache 44.5 x 62 cm framed

Inspired by walks and journeys in the South Downs.

Natasha Simon (11) From My Window, 2026 Acrylic pens and paint 40 x 50 cm

I can see Butser hill from my window and when it is cloudy I can’t see the hills. My favourite time is the sunset and once the sky was so red and orange. This is what I based my picture on.

Sofia Rose Wendes (6) Two Flowers, 2026 Acrylic on canvas 30 x 20 cm

I like the flowers in Grandma’s garden.
