bram to Abraham explores the Abraham saga (11:27-22:24) through a literary lens, following the legendary figure of Abraham as he navigates the arduous odyssey to nationhood. Rather than overlook the textual discrepancies, repetitions and contradictions long noted by diachronic scholars, this study tackles them directly, demonstrating how many problems of the ancient text in fact hold the key to deeper understanding of the narrative and its objectives. Therefore, the book frequently notes the classic division of the text according to primary sources, but offers an alternative, more harmonious reading based on the assumption that the narrative forms a single, intentionally designed unit. The narrative’s artistic design is especially evident in its arrangement of the two halves of the story around the protagonists’ change of name. The stories of Abram and Sarai in the first half of the cycle (11:27-16:16) are parallel to the stories of Abraham and Sarah in the second half (18:1-22:24). A close reading of this transformation in the biblical narrative illuminates the moral and theological values championed by the figure of Abraham as luminary, soldier, family man, and loyal subject of God.

udaism’s Promise, Meeting The Challenge Of Modernity follows Seymour W. Itzkoff’s well-received three-book series, Who Are the Jews? Judaism’s Promise, confronts the many revolutions that have reshaped Judaism over the centuries allowing it and its people a path of leadership into the modern world. It takes the writings of the Torah, Holy Scriptures, and Talmud seriously as exemplars of the human search for civilizational and moral intellectuality. The book’s basic concern is with the withering of Judaism as a force in contemporary Western civilization. Sadly millions of Jews have left the faith. Others venture forth only hesitantly into a synagogue, now a bastion of fossilized ritual and conspicuous consumption. These millions needed more from the orthodoxy, and this book attempts to show them the way back by giving renewed life to the heritages of Judaism, and, consequently, to its meaning for the modern world. Judaism’s Promise argues for a return to the synagogue’s originating Hellenistic commitment «to come together» in intellectual and moral study. As Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan argued, Judaism must once more become in the 20–21st century the civilization that it once represented to the wider world, and not a fossilized ceremonialism.

he book refers to universal eschatology contained in the Letters to the Thessalonians (1 Thess 4, 13-5, 11; 2 Thess 2, 1-12). The whole material is divided in two groups (eschatological motifs and apocalyptic motifs). Each of the motifs is analysed in the Biblical context and in the Intertestamental Literature context (the Old Testament Pseudepigrapha and the Qumran Literature). The exegetical analysis and the comparative analysis show similarity and diversity of the way Paul used the motifs. They also show which motifs were created or extensively modified by Paul in order to contribute to the creation of Christian eschatology. After presentation of the importance of eschatological topics in the 1-2 Thess (chapter I), the analyses of prodroms (chapter II) and events connected with the parousia (chapter III) indicate the way of using each of the motifs in different traditions. Based on results of the analyses, the Jewish background and Paul’s original contribution to the New Testament eschatology are presented in chapter IV.

a réciprocité est habituellement conçue comme une structure d’échange où ce que l’on rend est de valeur à peu près équivalente à ce que l’on reçoit. Il en est ainsi de la traditionnelle règle d’or, «Ne fais pas à autrui ce que tu ne voudrais pas qu’il te fasse», et de la loi du Talion, «Œil pour œil, dent pour dent». L’idée très répandue de la juste rétribution exprime cette manière de penser. Dès l’origine, le christianisme fait valoir une autre optique : le don ne récompense pas forcément le mérite, il arrive qu’il soit gratuit, et le pardon répond à la faute. C’est donc une interaction asymétrique qui est ainsi impliquée par cette tradition et notre logique habituelle s’en trouve déroutée. Pour pallier cette carence, le présent ouvrage propose de recourir au calcul matriciel élémentaire. Il y puise une petite série de modèles assez simples et il examine s’il est plausible de les appliquer à des manifestations typiques de la pensée chrétienne. Il en résulte l’idée de l’alternance : à tel moment, la conscience est focalisée sur le monde, à tel autre, sur l’écoute de l’Evangile. Un tableau métaphysique intégral est hors de portée.

Graham Speake studied classics at Trinity College, Cambridge, and was awarded a doctorate by the University of Oxford for a thesis on the Byzantine transmission of ancient Greek literature. He is the founder and Chairman of the Friends of Mount Athos and author of Mount Athos: Renewal in Paradise (2nd edn., 2014), for which he was awarded the Criticos Prize. He is also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. Kallistos Ware holds a doctorate in theology from the University of Oxford where from 1966 to 2001 he was Fellow of Pembroke College and Spalding Lecturer in Eastern Orthodox Studies. He is a monk of the monastery of St. John the Theologian, Patmos, and an assistant bishop in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain. In 2007 he was raised to the rank of metropolitan.

Er behandelt dessen Tropus-Begriff, Methodologie und Zeichentheorie. In this thought-provoking study, Dan Lioy asserts that a Christocentric and Christotelic perspective is an unmistakable feature of Paul’s discourse. This book deals with the world of the psalms, in order to reveal the elements of faith as expressed in the various prayers. It includes an encompassing study of the variety of experiences: How can an individual in distress experience a situation which contrasts his actual reality altogether? What causes an individual to believe that God wants him to live and does not want him to die? What are the individual’s sources of confidence in justice as ruling over the universe, and his confidence that the harmony of the universe leaves no room for evil? Virtually all books of the Old Testament express the world view and opinions of their authors, with a didactic purpose on mind. Not so the Book of Psalms: Here we can find an expression of the pious individual’s world and his beliefs. The psalms are what the authors sought to place in the mouth of the worshippers, thinking that they would aptly express what was on their mind. Anybody who seeks to understand how faith and thoughtfulness join together with the individual’s emotions through a wonderful creative shaping, is invited to read this book.

The Relationship between Temple and Agriculture in the Book of Haggai This is the first book to explore the importance of agriculture in relation to the restoration of the Jerusalem temple in the Book of Haggai during the Achaemenid period. Scholars discussing the rebuilding of the temple have mainly focused on the political and social context. Additionally, the missions of Ezra and Nehemiah have been used as a basis for analysing the economy of postexilic Judah. This has, however, understated the wider socio-economic significance of the temple by disregarding the agricultural capacity of Judah. The Book of Haggai is primarily concerned with agriculture and the temple. This analysis of Haggai includes an examination of the temple’s reconstruction from a historical and economic point of view, with agriculture playing a central role. Archaeological records are examined and show that prized commodities such as olives and grapes were produced in and around Jerusalem in large quantities and exported all over the ancient Near East. This book is intended to shed new light on the value of agriculture for the people of Judah and the whole imperial economy. It also presents a new interpretation of the Book of Haggai and a new perspective on the temple economy in Jerusalem.

A Textual and Archaeological Analysis of the Reign of Jehoshaphat My People as Your People provides an in-depth analysis of the chronology, history, and archaeology associated with the reign of Jehoshaphat of Judah. The synthesis of these various elements illuminates a diverse geo-political picture of the southern Levant in the mid-ninth century BCE. In recent years, archaeologists and biblical scholars have dealt quite extensively with the tenth and eighth centuries BCE due to both the controversial aspects of recent interpretations associated with the so-called United Kingdom and the established archaeological data relating to Judah’s rise as a significant polity in the eighth century BCE. On the other hand, the ninth century BCE has received considerably less scholarly treatment, despite the fact that many new archaeological strata have been uncovered in recent years that have a direct bearing upon this period. My People as Your People is an attempt to fill this gap in our knowledge. In accomplishing this, it both provides a nuanced understanding of Judah in the mid-ninth century BCE and also demonstrates the significance of this period in the larger setting of the history of the Divided Kingdom.

An Investigation of the Usage of Jewish and Greco-Roman Imagery in 1 Thess. 4:13–18

This book contains a methodological fundamental-dogmatic study, which frames a comprehensive overview of the Church in the light of reason and faith. The understanding of the Church in the history of Christianity was – and still is – a subject of numerous misunderstandings, either among the believers themselves or those who observe it from the outside. Presenting the post-conciliar approach of the integral ecclesiology, the author puts a stronger emphasis on biblical origins and nature of the Church and on the split between the synagogue and the young community of followers of Jesus Christ. He expands the hallmarks of the Church from the usual four to five (Marianity) and displays a growing communio in practice and in ecclesial self-awareness.

The author applies Umberto Eco’s literary theory of the open work to the perennial problem of the literary macrostructure of the Apocalypse. Revisiting the complexities of its genre, intertextuality, language and communication, he cumulatively traces all indications of literary openness in Revelation. Then the book discusses the extraordinarily diverse scholarly approaches and analyses from this viewpoint. As a result, John’s multiple and varied structural signals are recognised as demonstrably clustered within specific subsections – complex transitions creating a specifically open literary arrangement. More generally, the wider concept of literary openness is offered as a theoretical framework applicable to the specific complexities of some apocalyptic writings.

1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 has long been the quintessential Pauline text on the parousia of Christ. Nowhere else does Paul reveal a more vivid picture of Christ’s coming. The apostle Paul employs a number of images to describe the parousia to the Thessalonian congregation who have become anxious, grief-stricken, and despairing in the midst of the loss of their loved ones. Until recently scholars have held that Paul’s use of imagery in 1 Thess. 4:13–18 was either inspired by Greco-Roman imperial categories or Jewish apocalyptic categories. Michael E. Peach provides a fresh examination of imagery in 1 Thess. 4:13–18 arguing that Paul synthesizes both the Jewish and Greco-Roman imagery. With careful analysis, Peach traces the history of interpretation of Pauline eschatology finding patterns of thought concerning the source of inspiration of Paul’s use of imagery. An Inquiry on the Fourth-Century Trinitarian Controversy The concern of the book is whether Hilary of Poitiers compromised the Nicene faith, a charge suggested even in Hilary’s own day, when he attempted to bring together the homouseans and the homoeouseans. The author revisits the arguments offered by recent studies on the issue and analyzes the primary sources to assert confidently that Hilary did not compromise the Nicene confession. The book demonstrates that the confession of faith of the homoeousean group with whom Hilary conciliated was not another form of Arianism. Similarly, the author clarifies that the distinction between the numeric unity and specific unity on which modern authors unsympathetic to Hilary base their negative assessment of the Hilarian program of rapprochement was not operative in the fourth century Trinitarian discourse. Hilary merely affirmed the orthodoxy of the homoeousean confession by demonstrating its affinity with the Nicene doctrine through his explication of the significance of the nativitas of the Son from God the Father, a theological concept employed by both ecclesiastical parties to establish their respective beliefs in the divinity of the Son and His substantial relationship with the Father.

Part Three: The Pelagian Crisis (411-430) The seventeenth century was the century of Saint Augustine. In 1695, Louis Sébastien, Le Nain de Tillemont, finished volume 13 of his Mémoires ecclésiastique, entitled La vie de saint Augustin. The volume consisted of approximately 1200 pages wherein Louis Sébastien gathered from the works of Augustine and elsewhere all extant passages relevant to the biography of Augustine of Hippo. Completed in 1695, the biography was published posthumously in 1700. The work lies in the tradition of Jansenism from Port-Royal and the Leuven. Though an ascetic recluse on the family estate for the last twenty years of his life, he was in touch with important French scholars and the ecclesiastical movements of his time. Louis’ work is the first modern biography of Augustine and the most comprehensive of all Augustinian biographies, even today. Modern authors consult him and frequently adopt his theories without citation. His method exercises influence on contemporary Parisian scholarship on Augustine. This English translation has been divided into three volumes covering three time periods: part 1: birth to episcopal consecraton (354–396); part 2: the Donatist controversy (396–411); part 3: the Pelagian controversy (411–430).

Diese Uneinheitlichkeit der Begründungen könnte sich negativ auf deren Geltung auswirken. In rechtlicher Hinsicht hat sie sich zu einer positivrechtlichen subjektiven Anspruchsnorm entwickelt. Daraus ergeben sich im konkreten Entscheidungsfall Operationalisierungsprobleme, beispielsweise beim Ausgleich milieubedingter Nachteile von Bildungschancen und gesellschaftlicher Teilhabe.

Elles les juxtaposent ou les opposent sans chercher un principe de leur articulation. Rechercher un concept qui articule densité des significations proprement humaines de l’action et action divine, mais aussi la pluralité des interprétations est la question de départ de cette recherche. L’auteur reconstruit le concept de «Lebensführung» (conduite de vie) dans la théologie éthique de Trutz Rendtorff, un concept historique transféré dans une théologie éthique pour l’établir comme médiation de la religion et de la culture. Le lecteur est invité à penser la question des deux règnes, qui prolonge l’appel du Concile de Vatican II à penser l’Eglise dans le monde de ce temps.

Auf die biblisch-theologischen Schriften antwortete die römisch-katholische Kirche erst mit dem Konzil von Trient (1545–1563). Luthers drei Reformationsschriften sind auch heute eine wichtige Basis im Gespräch der Gläubigen mit der Welt und mit ihrem Glaubensleben darin, wie auch in den Ökumenischen Gesprächen der Kirchen und Religionen. I turned back my feet to your decrees (Psalm 119, 59) Torah in the Fifth Book of the Psalter Scholars have described Psalm 119 as the «crux criticorum» of the Fifth Book of the Psalter (Pss 107-150). While the length of the psalm and its insistence on the question of YHWH’s Torah are basic indices pointing to its importance in the Book, the question of its message, that is, the logical development of its theme has remained an exegetical problem. The author proposes a solution, namely, that Psalm 119 is structurally arranged to show the Psalmist’s own experience of straying and returning to YHWH’s Torah. The resolution of the problem has implications for understanding the organisation of the Fifth Book and for the place of psalms such as 111 and 147, which also reflect on the theme of Torah in the final Book of the Psalter.

The Gospel of Luke

Eine qualitative Untersuchung zur Wahl der Erziehungsziele kirchlicher Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter Viele Kirchgemeinden bemühen sich um ein reichhaltiges Programm für Kinder. Dabei verfolgen sie bestimmte Ziele. Um diese herauszufinden, wurden im Rahmen dieser Arbeit Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter aus katholischen, evangelischen und freikirchlichen Gemeinden befragt. Es zeigte sich, dass es in allen drei Religionsgemeinschaften wichtig ist, die nächste Generation für die Gemeinde zu gewinnen. Es kamen aber auch unterschiedliche Denkweisen zum Ausdruck, zum Beispiel, welche Voraussetzungen ein Kind erfüllen muss, um als Christ gelten zu dürfen. Bei der Wahl ihrer Erziehungsziele orientieren sich die Mitarbeitenden kaum an den Erwartungen, die an sie herangetragen werden. Viel wichtiger ist ihnen ihre eigene Biografie: Was sie selbst erlebt – oder nicht erlebt – haben, möchten sie den Kindern weitergeben.

Finding Guidance in Genesis and Galatians to Serve the Household of God The author presents a close reading of Martin Luther’s lectures on Galatians (1531) and Genesis (1535–1545). It reveals that Luther employed his unique understanding of Law and Gospel to inculcate in his students the understanding and desire to faithfully live out their callings in the vocations to which God had appointed them. He provided resources to do the same in the parishes they were to serve. Though in recent years the field of Luther studies has begun to appreciate the invaluable pastoral insights of this experienced master of pastors, the research has focused primarily on Luther’s early works. Moreover, little attention has been given to exploring Luther’s message as he cultivated an upcoming generation of pastors in his classroom. This work seeks to address this lacuna.

A Hypertextual Commentary This commentary demonstrates that the Gospel of Luke is a result of twofold, strictly sequential, hypertextual reworking of Paul’s Letter to the Galatians. The ideas of this letter were sequentially illustrated by Luke with the use of numerous literary motifs, taken from other Pauline and post-Pauline letters, the letters of James, Peter, and Jude, the Gospel of Mark, well-known classical Greek and Hellenistic works, the Septuagint, the Damascus Document, and the works of Flavius Josephus. Consequently, the Lucan Jesus narratively embodies the features of God’s Son who was revealed in the person, teaching, and course of life of Paul the Apostle. The Gospel of Luke should therefore be regarded as a strictly theological-ethopoeic work, rather than a biographic one.

If God knows human actions in advance, do humans really have freedom of choice? Throughout the centuries various solutions have been offered as to how to retain or reconcile both the concepts of divine omniscience and human freedom. One solution focuses on the idea of middle knowledge. This theory originates with the Spanish Jesuit Luis de Molina, was contested by Reformed theologians such as Herman Bavinck, and makes a remarkable comeback among present-day analytical philosophers such as William Lane Craig. Apart from a wealth of philosophical considerations, the appeal to biblical texts also plays an important role in the work on middle knowledge by each of these thinkers. The book examines their writings and investigates how contemporary biblical scholars interpret the biblical texts used by them. The author elaborates a creative proposal as to how these gained insights apply to the theory of middle knowledge and what this means for our overall evaluation of this theory.

Der Autor geht in vier Studien der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit des Kirchenhistorikers Franz Overbeck nach. Unter Verwendung unveröffentlichter Vorlesungen rekonstruiert er Overbecks Arbeit am Konzept einer altchristlichen Literaturgeschichte sowie an der Entstehungsgeschichte des neutestamentlichen Kanons. Er zeichnet zudem Reflexionen Overbecks auf wissenschaftliche Kirchenhistorie nach und beschreibt die Verwendung des Begriffs «profane Kirchengeschichte». Er zeigt, wie – im Kontrast zum Öffentlichkeitsanspruch des Aufklärers Kant – Overbecks Öffentlichkeitsscheu als kritischer Historiker des Christentums wächst.

Von ihr profitieren nicht nur Juden, die an Jesus als Messias glauben, sondern auch Christen und Juden, sofern diese sich darauf einlassen, eine Bewegung verstehen zu wollen, die aus beiden Traditionsgütern «schöpft», die mitunter kontrovers diskutierte Ergebnisse liefert, die aber gerade darin zugleich hilfreiche Impulse für das theologische Gespräch zwischen Juden und Christen offeriert.

Das Jahrbuch der Karl-Heim-Gesellschaft dient der Förderung des interdisziplinären Gesprächs zwischen christlicher Theologie und den Wissenschaften. Es setzt, in der Gegenwart verantwortet, das Erbe Karl Heims fort. Heim (1874–1958) prägte als Theologe an den Universitäten Halle, Münster und seit 1920 in Tübingen sowie von 1920 bis 1948 als Frühprediger an der Tübinger Stiftskirche Generationen von Pfarrern. Unter seinen Zuhörern befanden sich auch viele Naturwissenschaftler, denn Heim konnte einerseits naturwissenschaftliche Sachverhalte zutreffend elementarisieren und andererseits den christlichen Glauben mit diesen Ergebnissen in einen fruchtbaren Dialog bringen. Der 28. Jahrgang dokumentiert die Jubiläumstagung 40 Jahre Karl-HeimGesellschaft und enthält weitere Beiträge zum Thema «Braucht Glauben Wissen?». Mit diesem Jahrbuch wird die bleibende Bedeutung der Theologie Karl Heims für eine dialogfähige Theologie im 21. Jahrhundert deutlich.

Der Titel «Umstrittene Religionsfreiheit» ist Programm. Denn angesichts der Bedrohung des elementaren Menschenrechts erscheint eine interdisziplinär angelegte Diskussion um Kontur, Reichweite und Geltungsanspruch der Trias von Glaubens-, Gewissens- und Religionsfreiheit heute unbedingt geboten.

The Role and Function of Charism in the Theology of Yves Congar This book reveals the ecclesiological values of charisms in the context of the growing values of personalism in the Church. Yves Congar understands charisms in the light of pneumatological christology. The study discovers that Congar’s concept of charisms mirrors the values of the arrangement of the first three chapters in Lumen Gentium. The role of charism is most intensive when Congar combines it with the concept of the people of God. His ecclesial diagrams bring out the complementary roles of hierarchy and laity. Gerhard Ebeling’s Rejection of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification By the end of the twentieth century, ecumenism’s deteriorating state had become evident. This deterioration can be attributed to many causes, however, the erstwhile German ecumenist Dr. Gerhard Ebeling’s rancorous, public debate among theologians in Germany in 1998 over the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification remains a contributing factor in its decline. Through an investigation of Ebeling’s systematic theology and his lifelong examination of the theology of Martin Luther, much of which is based upon German texts not translated into English, Scott A. Celsor identifies the hermeneutical and ontological concerns at the heart of Ebeling’s objection to the Joint Declaration. Consequently, this book provides scholars with ardent historical insights into the bitter, public debate in Germany over the Joint Declaration in addition to critical insights into the hermeneutical and ontological objections that some evangelicals still lodge against it. This, along with the accompaniment of an extensive bibliography dedicated to the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification, make this text an ideal, advanced introduction for graduate seminars on ecumenism, the doctrine of justification, and the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification as well as philosophical theology in general.

Toward a Realist Doctrine of Creation The discovery by Charles Darwin of natural selection as the principal mechanism of biological evolution sharpened the classical theological issue of suffering in the natural world. Darwin’s discovery revealed predation and starvation to be the engine of biological development. Theological responses to evolution within the Christian tradition have typically failed to come to terms with these features of biological evolution, focusing instead on romantic notions of nature or assumptions about the benefits of progress. As a result, many doctrines of creation have operated with a limited understanding of the created world that is their subject. As Joel C. Daniels shows, however, this shortcoming can be remedied by utilizing the ancient resources of dramatic tragedy in a theological vein. By drawing together a theological interpretation of tragedy and a scientifically accurate understanding of nature, a realist doctrine of creation can achieve a high degree of realism with regards to suffering, respecting the unique characteristics of individual experiences while situating them in a theologically meaningful frame of reference. The theological category of tragedy does not solve the problem of natural evil. However, it has the double virtue of attending closely to the specifics of the natural world and maintaining a principled tension between experiences of suffering and Christian claims about the possibility of redemption. This book thus makes a unique contribution to Christian theology by drawing on multiple disciplines to address this issue of existential importance.

In this work, Xavier Lakshmanan argues for a textual linguistic approach to Christian theology. The book takes its shape in conversation with Paul Ricœur’s philosophical thought, demonstrating how Ricœur’s hermeneutic philosophy can inform the way Christians interpret and appropriate biblical narratives without delimiting the potential of the text or eroding the distinctiveness of its language. The text can be appropriated in ways that address the fundamental questions of life. New meanings are constantly generated from the same text in order to describe and redescribe existence, and form human identity. The self is linked inseparably with narrative; every interpretation of narrative is at the same time a reinterpretation of the self and of its possibilities. In such interpretative processes, the reader interprets the text and the text interprets the reader at the same time through an interactive reading. Accordingly, the aim of interpreting the narratives is to open up the world of the text in front of the text and in front of the reader. Here what the text uncovers is the «textual» structure of existence itself. The reality that unfolds through language discloses the possibilities of existence, and in this way the text creates a future. A revised identity emerges against the horizon of that future to give a coherent and dynamic account of the self against a horizon of hope.

Para el hombre moderno esta lectura resulta difícil. ¿Dios Padre pide el sacrificio de su Hijo para conceder su perdón? ¿Cuál es el significado bíblico de la expiación y del sacrificio? La teología contemporánea se ha hecho cargo de estas preguntas y ha procurado responder desde las raíces mismas del mensaje bíblico. El autor ofrece una visión panorámica de la discusión actual y de los principales núcleos del debate. A la luz de las contribuciones más destacadas muestra el sentido bíblico y soteriológico de la muerte de Cristo como sacrificio de expiación.

A Form and Literary-Critical Interpretation of the Named and Unnamed Women in the Elijah and Elisha Narratives In this book, Hye Kyung Park examines the functions and roles of the women who appear in the Elijah and Elisha narratives. The named and unnamed female characters in the Elijah and Elisha cycles frequently drive the plot of these narratives, giving a voice to important theological, historical, and social concerns that are otherwise overlooked. Consequently, this book elaborates upon the critical meaning of women’s voices through a close interpretation of the roles and functions attributed to women in 1 Kings 17:8–24; 2 Kings 4:8–37, 5, and 8:1–6. These female figures and presences include the Zarephath woman in 1 Kings 17:8– 24, twenty-nine third-person feminine verbs to emphasize the Shunammite woman’s frequent appearances in 2 Kings 4:8–37, the Israelite girl as a prophetess in 2 Kings 5, and the Shunammite woman’s return in 2 Kings 8:1– 6. Even though the various women in 1 Kings and 2 Kings have not been named throughout the biblical traditions, their presence and actions were crucial for advancing the prophetic narratives concerning Elijah and Elisha. Indeed, the women are crucial to the Elijah and Elisha narratives, both in terms of advancing the plot of the narratives and defining the roles of the prophets presented within.

The book gives a detailed overview of relevant traditional indigenous Sámi myths, beliefs and rituals based on empirical findings. The author inquires whether and how they are related to an ecologically sustainable use of the natural environment. Her main sources are ancient missionary texts, writings by Sámi and contemporary interviews with Sámi individuals. The traditional value system included ecological sustainability as a survival strategy. Beliefs and rituals, transmitted via stories, incorporated these values and transmitted a feeling of a round life, despite the strict rules for right behavior and punishment for transgressions. The term round symbolized a sense of safety, interconnectedness, reliance on mutual help and respect, identification and empathy with all living beings.

This textbook offers a brief overview of the basic approaches to the scientific scrutiny of religion. To remain uninterested in examining religion is more difficult than examining any other object of research. In relation to issues of religion, we cannot stand as impartial observers, because we are always somehow involved. Therefore, this book emphasizes not only knowledge of religions, but also how to find ways to get closer to impartiality. It offers an overview of topics, questions, and context, rather than a coherent theory.

Translated by Marcin Fijak This book discusses Theoderic the Great’s years of political activity, which coincided with the advent of a new era and were marked by features of two distinct civilizations. From the political and cultural viewpoint, he stood at the boundary between the Roman tradition and his Germanic origin. From the religious perspective, when he came to power in Italy at the Emperor’s behest, he found himself amid the conflict embroiling Rome and Constantinople at that time. It was the so-called Acacian schism centred around the issue of the recognition of the Council of Chalcedon (451) with its teaching on the two natures in Christ as well as the acknowledgement of Constantinople as the principal see of the Church in the East. Another ecclesiastical – and strictly Roman – problem noted in the Liber Pontificalis is the Laurentian schism, named after Lawrence, who was elected Pope on the same day as Symmachus.

Diese religionswissenschaftliche Untersuchung verfolgt die europäische Tradition der Astrologie von ihren orientalischen Anfängen bis in die Gegenwart. Als ein Sammelbegriff unterschiedlicher auf den Kosmos bezogener Lehren und Praktiken ist die Astrologie einerseits ein in sich konsistentes kulturelles Phänomen. Andererseits scheint es, dass sie mit der Überwindung des geozentrischen Weltbildes durch Kopernikus und Kepler ihre Begründung verloren hat und nur als «intellektuelle Regression» (Theodor W. Adorno) weiterhin bestehen kann. Dieser Auffassung steht die hier begründete These entgegen, dass die Astrologie den Wechsel der Weltbilder unbeschadet überleben konnte, weil die Begründungsmuster jenseits der rein naturwissenschaftlichen Perspektiven liegen. So hat sich die Astrologie als moderne individualisierte Religiosität auch in westlichen Gesellschaften etabliert.

Cet ouvrage renouvelle les études relatives aux commentaires patristiques des Psaumes, en prenant en compte l’apport du Judaïsme que les Pères connaissaient et qui marque leur interprétation du texte biblique, ne serait-ce que par le texte de la Septante qui sert de référence aux Pères grecs. Sans doute les Psaumes sont-ils davantage encore l’héritage commun du Judaïsme et du christianisme, comme l’a compris Augustin, qui entend, dans les Psaumes d’Asaph, la voix de la synagogue. Il n’en demeure pas moins que cet héritage commun permet une synergie entre les deux communautés, comme en témoigne, de manière éloquente, Maxime le Confesseur dans son Commentaire du Psaume 136, en dépit des différences d’interprétation qui existent.

This book presents a qualitative study of the «Gospel of Prosperity» preached by the Charismatic and Neo-Pentecostal churches in Ghana, with a particular focus on its soteriological significance. The author explores the concept of the Gospel of Prosperity from a number of different angles, surveying its historical and ideological background, analysing its specific context in a Ghanaian environment and, finally, looking at its theological and soteriological relevance, compared with classical Christian teaching and especially Catholic systematic teaching. The theological investigation carried out here reveals both divergences and convergences, demonstrating areas where the Catholic tradition is challenged by the Gospel of Prosperity as well as vice versa. This analysis of the strengths and weaknesses within both traditions constitutes a springboard for a possible dialogue and access to common ground. Such a dialogue should be of great interest not only because of its signifi-cance for theological scholarship, but also because of the practical influence it could have on the lives of Christians, both in Ghana and elsewhere in the West African subregion.

Er betrachtet den Glauben an den Jüngsten Tag und das Leben nach dem Tod, der von allen Gesandten gelehrt wurde. Einen Glauben, der dem Glauben an Gottes Gerechtigkeit entspricht. Menschen, die glauben, für ihre Taten Rechenschaft ablegen zu müssen, handeln überlegt und verantwortungsbewusst. Der Verfasser thematisiert die Jenseitslehre des Koran, durch die auch der Tod einen Sinn bekommt. Das heißt, es kann im Vertrauen angenommen werden, dass der Tod nicht das Letzte ist, sondern dass Gott uns aus dem Tod zum ewigen Leben führt.

Albertz) – setzt an den Querverweisen zwischen den Überlieferungen an. Sie stellt das Quellenmodell in Frage und plädiert für eine überlieferungsgeschichtliche Lösung. Religions and Discourse Edited by James Francis Religions and Discourse explores religious language in the major world faiths from various viewpoints, including semiotics, pragmatics and cognitive linguistics, and reflects on how it is situated within wider intellectual and cultural contexts. In particular a key issue is the role of figurative speech. Many fascinating metaphors originate in religion e.g. revelation as a ‘garment’, apostasy as ‘adultery’, loving kindness as the ‘circumcision of the heart’. Every religion rests its specific orientations upon symbols such as these, to name but a few. The series strives after the interdisciplinary approach that brings together such diverse disciplines as religious studies, theology, sociology, philosophy, linguistics and literature, guided by an international editorial board of scholars representative of the aforementioned disciplines. Though scholarly in its scope, the series also seeks to facilitate discussions pertaining to central religious issues in contemporary contexts. The series will publish monographs and collected essays of a high scholarly standard.

Religious and theological reflection has often been confined to the realm of the private, the personal or the Church. In Europe this restriction of religion and theology can be traced back to the Enlightenment and has had long-lasting and pernicious consequences for the understanding of religious faith and society. On the one hand, there has been a rise in religious fundamentalisms around the globe, while, on the other hand, so-called advanced societies are constructed mainly along economic, pragmatic and rationalistic lines. Added to this is the reality that religious faith is increasingly lived out in pluralistic and multifaith contexts with all the challenges and opportunities this offers to denominational religion. This series explores what it means to be ‘religious’ in such contexts. It invites scholarly contributions to themes including patterns of secularisation, postmodern challenges to religion, and the relation of faith and culture. From a theological perspective it seeks constructive re-interpretations of traditional Christian topics – including God, creation, salvation, Christology, ecclesiology, etc. in a way that makes them more credible for today. It also welcomes studies on religion and science, and on theology and the arts. The series publishes monographs, comparative studies, interdisciplinary projects, conference proceedings and edited books. It attracts well-researched, especially interdisciplinary, studies which open new approaches to religion or focus on interesting case studies. The language of the series is English.
