[…] Click here to read more.

Christian Life & Practice

Whereas, almost all Catholic moral theologians and ethicists do not have many problems receiving the negative judgment of Donum Vitae on heterologous artificial insemination and regular IVF as procedures of generating human life, only few find it difficult and unacceptable for the Simple Case IVF to be proscribed because they consider it less problematic. The Catholic Scholars who express dissent against the evaluation and conclusion of the Magisterium on the Simple Case seem to suggest that the destruction of human embryos and the use of a donor constitute the only problem of this procedure. But their reasoning can be considered inadequate because it fails to understand the theological and moral basis for the dignity of human procreation. The fact that the Simple Case IVF violates the principle of inseparability of the conjugal act by seeking the generation […] Click here to read more.

Why is it that churches agree to the same basic faith in hundreds of dialogues, and yet remain locked in an „ecumenical winter“? In Choose the Narrow Path, Bishop Pierre Whalon argues that to acknowledge the same doctrines while acting as if churches should remain separate is not only a recipe for disaster, but it is also itself a sin. This book spells out that doctrinal agreement in Part I, while Part II uncovers a more personal reaction, structured around the Nicene Creed. The primary argument is that, while churches may be „one,“ „holy,“ and „catholic“ in what they believe, none of them is truly „apostolic“ in their action. To begin to address this failing, the author calls for exceptional intercommunion for members of all churches that subscribe to the Narrow Path but are still reluctant to walk it together.

“Bishop Pierre Whalon … offers clear points about the challenges that Churches face, but also a way forward through what he describes as “the narrow path.”

- The Most Reverend Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop and Primate of The Episcopal Church

“Bishop Pierre Whalon’s Choose the Narrow Path is a much needed and highly accessible handbook of the contemporary Ecumenical Movement for the unity of the Christian Churches.”

- The Right Reverend R. William Franklin, Assistant Bishop, Diocese of Long Island

“Bishop Pierre Whalon has gone beyond the rhetoric to produce a sound scriptural-based systematic treatise with concrete practical applications. The book … may well be the catalyst, as the subtitle suggests, That Opens the Way for the Churches to Walk Together.”

- Prof. Cyril Orji, Professor of Systematic Theology, University of Dayton, OH

“Bishop Whalon’s Choose the Narrow Path is … a book for Christians of all stripes to read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest—great for study groups and church leaders alike.”

He calls for action now so that we can avoid the scandal of disunity which threatens to plunge us into the depths, and instead to witness together to Jesus the Risen Christ.”

The book is a significant new analysis of African Pentecostal theology of humanity. In particular, it offers a new, more comprehensive interpretation of African Pentecostal theology of humanity ‘in Christ’, which author Chammah J. Kaunda views in terms of becoming, transcending and flourishing. The book takes an interdisciplinary approach, fostering dialogue with African studies and Pentecostal studies, but also with a broad spectrum of disciplines and approaches: post-colonial studies, theology, religious studies, cultural anthropology, and philosophy. The aim is to construct a new conceptual metaphor, the poetics of mysticality, materiality and plasticity. In the Bemba (Zambian) notion of Muntu, the author identifies not only a metaphor […] Click here to read more.

This book investigates the question of human flourishing in African New Pentecostalism in South Africa. In a context marked by deep economic inequality and high unemployment, many poor South Africans rely on African New Pentecostal prophets to bring spiritual meaning to their lives. Collectively, and using various theoretical frameworks and methods, the authors of this volume analyze and critique the concept of this pursuit, and ask what can be done to challenge African New Pentecostal prophets to respond effectively.

The book will be of interest to academics, pastors, researchers and university students in Pentecostalism in Africa, Missiology and Science of Religion, Sociology and Psychology of Religion and the public role of religion in South Africa and beyond.

“This volume provides a uniquely fresh perspective on African Pentecostalism by linking three important discursive fields: human flourishing, charismatic Pentecostalism, and decoloniality. The volume provides important insights into the normative notions brought forward by prophetic Pentecostalism on what constitutes a good life. It thereby substantially advances the debate on Pentecostalism and prosperity. Even though the book zooms in on South Africa, its chapters bear relevance far beyond. The volume is therefore a must-read for anyone wanting to engage with current trends in African Christianity.”

- Philipp Öhlmann, Associated Senior Researcher, Center for Rural Development, Humboldt University; Research Fellow, Department of Theology and Religious Studies, University of Botswana

“This is an intellectually stimulating, original, and thought-provoking contribution to the field of African Pentecostal Studies. It has not failed to deliver and must be read to understand new creative interpretations of the movements by African Christian scholars.”

- Chammah Kaunda, Assistant Professor, Yonsei University, South Korea; Extraordinary Professor, University of the Western Cape, South Africa

“This important book creatively explores human flourishing in the context of New Prophetic Pentecostalism in Africa. It should be read by all who are interested in the most recent developments of Southern African Pentecostalism and those concerned about genuine human flourishing in the church and wider society.”

- Dr. Simo Frestadius, Dean of Research, Regents Theological College; Executive Director, Institute for Pentecostal Theology; Chair, European Pentecostal Theological Association

Christianity: Old Testament

This book successfully mines the rich theology of Passover through fresh exegesis that reads the text according to ancient Hebrew literary conventions. The results indicate that the original author viewed Passover as having far more theological depth than is typically acknowledged today.

Numbers 3:13 indicates that during Passover Yahweh consecrated the firstborn. Yet, how did he do this? Through a close reading of the final form of the text and sensitivity to ancient Hebrew style, the author perceptively notes the connections between Passover and other rituals in Exodus. He suggests that Passover is a ritual that not only rescues the firstborn from death through sacrifice, but also purifies and sanctifies them. The firstborn are moved from the realm of death to life and after being imbued with holiness, made fit to enjoy Yahweh’s presence. […] Click here to read more.

“Centred on Passover, God’s deliverance of the Israelites from captivity in Egypt is the great salvation event of the Old Testament. Yet, the theological dimension of Passover has received little attention. Dr Gehrig’s monograph fills this major hiatus, offering an insightful interpretation of Exodus 12-13. Highlighting how Passover functions as a sanctification ritual, his conclusions are exceptionally important for readers of the New Testament who see no soteriological significance in the original Passover event”.

“A number of factors make this a deeply satisfying study: It is comprehensive in its responsible engagement with a wide variety of views on the text and its background; it is critical in its judicious assessments of such a variety of views; and it is highly competent in its application of poetics to a well-disciplined “literary and theological approach” to reading its target text. Further, its writing style is incredibly clear—perhaps the crowning achievement! Besides its noteworthy contribution to the study of the Passover text in Exodus, it promises to open up fresh avenues of insight in the study of the Hebrew Bible more widely (and to the New Testament as well). I hope this work gains a wide readership”.

“Here is a book that is long overdue. Paying close attention to narrative features that have previously been misinterpreted or ignored, Gehrig demonstrates how important these are for a holistic interpretation of one of Scripture’s most seminal texts, as well as its theological significance within the book of Exodus and beyond. Those wanting a comprehensive and eminently engaging discussion of the Passover narrative in Exodus need look no further”.

Literary Allusions in Esther: A Study on the Convergence of Intertexts and Narrative examines the robust intertextual nature of MT Esther. Its textual landscape is filled with a plethora of allusions to other texts scattered throughout the Old Testament canon. While these intertexts have often been identified individually, they have not always been considered a collective whole. By employing a new, eclectic method of exegetical analysis (‘Analogical Convergence’), the author demonstrates one means by which these intertexts complement one another and converge with the authorial intention embedded into MT Esther.

In Literary Allusions in Esther, Ron Lindo offers a nuanced and sophisticated engagement with the book of Esther. His survey of proposed ‘intertexts’ in secondary literature is comprehensive yet […] Click here to read more.

“The basis for a compelling new account of Esther’s thrust as a story. Literary Allusions in Esther makes important contributions to the field, and should feature in further discussions of the story’s shape and the extent to which it interacts with other texts from antiquity.”

“That Esther is a work which is composed with allusion to other texts is now increasingly recognized. This work makes an important contribution by establishing a disciplined method for understanding this and how both the surface text and its interaction with other texts in the Old Testament contribute to its meaning. Scholars working on Esther will need to engage with this disciplined and careful work.”

This book focuses on Luther’s very last lectures, which interpret the Joseph story in the final chapters of Genesis. Scholars have frequently neglected the later Luther and the Genesis Lectures, making this an important new contribution to the field. Luther’s lectures are not a modern scientific commentary, but enarrations, as Kenneth Hagen calls them, filled with public proclamation, expanded narrative, and a performative sense of language. The author furthers Oswald Bayer’s performative interpretation of Luther’s theology with a more sophisticated linguistic philosophy, while continuing Bayer’s theological direction. The book is an important new contribution to Luther studies and will be of interest to […] Click here to read more.

“Peter D. S. Krey offers a theologically expansive and polyvalent reading of Luther’s lectures on the last chapters of Genesis, the story of Joseph and his family in Egypt. Composed at the end of his days, the lectures were fully informed not only by Luther’s mature theology, but also by his own lifelong struggles with hopelessness and fear. Krey’s writing is lively, at times moving, his scholarship capacious. His book calls renewed attention to this most important work just when our own deeply troubled world needs it most.”

“Dr. Peter Krey takes the reader on an energetic ride, as he examines Luther’s reading of the Joseph Story through a variety of intriguing interpretive lenses. With his unique and empathetic approach, Krey has accumulated an original examination of a key section of Luther’s Genesis lectures. Luther is alive on these pages that lay out the complexity of his theological language in ways that resonate with both mind and heart.”

Ezekiel has often been called ‘the prophet of the spirit’ because of his surpassing use of the word רוח, ‘spirit’. The main argument of this book is that Ezekiel’s ‘spirit’ motif conveys a polysemous symbolism which, nonetheless, accentuates an overarching leitmotiv. Ezekiel’s ‘spirit’ symbolism signifies a paradigm shift in ancient Israelite visualization of divine presence in Israel: from visible phenomena and experiences, mediated through rituals at cultic shrines in Israel, to an omnipresence that is not necessarily mediated through cultus.

Moreover, author Samuel W. Muindi posits that the African Pentecostal ‘en-spirited’ worldview is an apt hermeneutical lens for understanding Ezekielian ‘spirit’ symbolism. The experiences of […] Click here to read more.

In this monograph, the author demonstrates that the Acts of the Apostles is a highly creative hypertextual reworking of the Letter to the Galatians, with over 500 strictly sequentially organized conceptual and linguistic correspondences between Acts and Galatians. This hypertextual dependence on Galatians explains numerous surprising features of Acts. Critical explanations of these features, which are offered in this monograph, ensure the reliability of the new solution to the problem of the relationship between Acts and the Pauline and post-Pauline letters.

Throughout history, the Fourth Gospel has been an enigma to its readers, and most notably in the way that it shapes its characters. Although traditional approaches to gospel characterization have often confined its characters to the pages of the text, The Voices of the Fourth Gospel presents a fresh, interdisciplinary approach that reveals the characterizations of the Fourth Gospel as vibrant, literary products based on eyewitness testimony of their encounters with Jesus of Nazareth. As such, the characters of the Fourth Gospel emerge as unique “voices” that speak to both the realities of their narrative world and the context of the emerging Christian community in Ephesus at the end of the first century. Based on the Fourth Gospel’s chronological and geographical distinctions, The Voices of the Fourth Gospel challenges its readers to hear the voices of each character […] Click here to read more.

Click here to read more.

Click here to read more.

Julian of Norwich in Her Phenomenology engages Julian’s primordial religious experience of May 1373; her subsequent definition to its revelation within her spiritual texts; and their hermeneutics made manifest from centuries of historical context. The meaning of Julian’s experience continued to unfold throughout her life: with its grace, and by insight with her own use of phenomenological method. The historical manifestation of Julian’s graced experience is given its closest phenomenological expression within her Short Text (Amherst) and in her Long Text (Sloane), with their collective human-Divine collaborations. But first, they arise phenomenally for Julian in the reciprocal gaze exchanged between her God and her soul. It is by God’s Trinitarian gift of love, and in her grace-filled collaboration with […] Click here to read more.

“You have done a magnificent study of Julian. The initial chapters are splendidly researched though I missed the Syon Abbey contribution. Then I loved your final chapters where the footnotes keep giving Julian’s text. I especially applaud your seeing the Carmelite aspect which I don’t think others have.”

“A new work on Julian of Norwich is always a cause for celebration and Dr Clemmer’s book is no exception. The reader is enabled to follow Julian closely before, during and after her unique visionary experience, examining contemporary history and spirituality from many angles. And the story continues right up to Edith Stein in the twentieth century. This book will delight all Julian lovers, as well as others who want to know Julian better and appreciate her in greater depths.”

How should Christians read the Bible to learn about God?

This is a perennial issue in Christianity and a variety of answers have of course been given over time. Perhaps the most profound answer to this question in the twentieth century came from Brevard S. Childs, an Old Testament professor, whose ‘canonical approach’ sought to redefi ne how the Bible is used in the Church.

Childs’ Canonical Approach: A Critical Assessment provides a fresh study of Childs’ approach from the perspective of biblical studies. It makes two arguments that break new ground. Firstly, it argues that Childs’ approach consists of three main elements that were variously developed and implemented over time: the theory of canonical […] Click here to read more.

“The ‘canonical approach’ to the Bible pioneered by Brevard S. Childs appeals to many Christians who want to understand Scripture as a coherent and self-consistent work in the form it now has - however it came into being. In this dissenting examination of ‘canonical reading’ Robert Brown shows that it comes at too high a price, obscuring the diversity of Scripture and flattening it out. Those attracted by the approach, as a way of finding positive and constructive teaching in the Bible, will be forced to look critically at its possible drawbacks too. A clear and incisive critique of a much-lauded current fashion in biblical interpretation, seen by many as a way to ‘reclaim’ the Bible for the church.”

FBA, Emeritus Oriel & Laing Professor of the Interpretation of Holy Scripture, University of Oxford, and Senior Research Fellow of Campion Hall, Oxford

“The task of reuniting biblical studies and theology is a crucial one for both disciplines, at least for those, like Robert Brown, who seek to understand how the scriptures speak to them of God. For many, the work of Brevard Childs has seemed to be the magic bullet, but his work is too often misunderstood by admirer and detractor alike. This careful study addresses these misunderstandings with clarity and precision, offers a much-needed analysis of the central concept of ‘canonical shaping’, and suggests ways forward that unite the synchronic and the historical-critical approaches. It is essential reading for anyone aspiring to do biblical theology in the 21st century.”

[…] Click here to read more.

This book is a meticulously researched and thought-provoking study that delves into the analysis and comparison of rituals in two distinct settings: the ancient Book of Leviticus and traditional Malagasy culture on the island of Madagascar. Author Olivier Randrianjaka invesigates why Malagasy Christians connect with Leviticus despite the apathy of the Western church. As this book demonstrates, the key unifying themes are sin, purification, and sacrifice. Profound parallels emerge between Levitical rituals (such as postpartum purification and the Day of Atonement) and Malagasy rituals (such as taboo violation, postpartum purification, and the New Year royal bath). The study highlights the universal relevance of sin, purification and […] Click here to read more.

“This is a remarkable book that represents a groundbreaking exploration of the intricate connections between Leviticus and Malagasy traditional rituals. The author’s meticulous analysis and profound insights into the themes of sin, sacrifice and atonement offer invaluable knowledge for Christian readers. I highly recommend this work to anyone seeking a comprehensive understanding of Madagascar’s religion, particularly its rich tapestry of traditional rituals.”

- Dr. Razivelo Mariette, Lutheran Faculty of Theology (SALT), Madagascar

“Rituals for purification play a significant role in most cultures, and this book contributes to the understanding of these phenomena in general. It provides insight into these rituals in Malagasy society and their description in the Book of Leviticus in the Bible. The book focuses on religious praxis, as described in texts and demonstrated in life. Every person will encounter these phenomena, and here is a tool to grasp their meaning.”

Nicholas of Cusa (1401–1464), thinker, polymath, and cardinal, had a long-standing interest in Islam. To date, however, no work has satisfactorily dealt with his volatile attitude towards the Islamic faith and the Ottoman Turks. This book revisits Nicholas of Cusa’s attitude towards Islam, criticizing previous work that has overlooked Cusa’s involvement in preparations for a crusade, and the significance of Cusa’s polemical A Scrutiny of the Koran (Cribratio Alkorani) of 1461. The book also addresses the prevailing image of Cusa as a dove of peace and champion of interreligious dialogue, and suggests an alternative and more complex picture which takes account of Cusa’s crusading […] Click here to read more.

“Nathan Ron sets the record straight about Nicholas of Cusa as so-called pioneer of ‘inter-religious dialogue’ based on a close reading of the irenic Peace of Faith and the polemical Scrutiny of the Koran, together with his role in mounting a crusade for Pope Pius II.”

- Gerald Christianson, Professor Emeritus of Church History, United Lutheran Seminary, Gettysburg; Past President, American Cusanus Society

“Nicholas of Cusa often is presented as a champion of interreligious dialogue. This book rightly brings to the fore Cusanus’ often harsh polemic against Islam and his role in Pius II’s crusade against the Turks.”

Philosophy & Religion

This book constructively proposes that the work of Hans Urs von Balthasar is a credible alternative to the epistemological and ethical concerns of postmodernism, which arose from nineteenth-century nihilism and continues in contemporary thought and culture. It critically examines postmodern efforts to reclaim “faith,” the “self “ vis-à-vis the divine, and “kenosis” by revisiting and reframing the thinking of postmodern theorists (Nietzsche, Heidegger, Lyotard, Derrida, Vattimo) within von Balthasar’s narrative of theological aesthetics and ethics. The heart of the author’s theological alternative to postmodernism is the Gestalt Christi, through which von Balthasar strives to restore the connection between the beautiful and the transcendental, faith and ethics, and ultimately the human and the divine to take back […] Click here to read more.

Was prägt menschliche Existenz in einer Welt des Wandels?

So fragt der Religionsphilosoph Thomas Brose aus Anlass seines 60. Geburtstags.

This volume is the first of its kind to focus entirely on food in the context of pilgrimage and faith-based tourism. It presents key studies that are relevant to academics, pilgrimage stakeholders, faith-based tourism stakeholders, planning and policy makers, tourist guides, students and interested readers alike. The knowledge and rich contents should find its way into practical applications and educational materials in the field.

The value of this edited collection lies in the approach of the contributors, who have explored food as a complement to spiritual experience in the context of pilgrimage and faith-based tourism. They demonstrate how giving, receiving and sharing promotes respect and understanding. At the same time, food can be used as an active peace-building tool, promoting inclusion, bridging cultures and bringing harmony to the table and beyond.

Since the dawn of humanity, people have traveled in search of meaning and to petition for worldly and otherworldly blessings. In the twenty-first century, the number of people traveling to religious sacred sites on pilgrimage has increased more than at any point in human history. An increased demand for pilgrimage routes and trails with the spiritual rather than the religious walker in mind, has also led various enterprising groups and individuals to develop entirely new pilgrimage routes and trails. This book highlights this new chapter in pilgrimage and trail development with essays by pilgrimage scholars and practitioners working in over ten countries. These include an examination of circular pilgrimage in The Netherlands, weird or […] Click here to read more.

Mount Athos is the chief centre of pilgrimage for Eastern Orthodox Christians. As the spiritual hub of the Orthodox world it is also home to more than two thousand monks. Each of its twenty monasteries welcomes thousands of pilgrims every year to venerate its holy icons, to make their confessions, and to listen to the wisdom of its elders. This book delves into the nature of pilgrimage, for both Western and Eastern Christians. It describes the pilgrim experience both from the standpoint of the visiting pilgrim (be it men to the Athonite monasteries or women to their daughter houses elsewhere) and from that of the receiving monk. “Mount Athos, for over a thousand years a centre for monasticism, has attracted pilgrims for nearly as long. This fascinating collection of essays discusses pilgrimage, the pilgrims, and the monks themselves. The Athonite ban on females has not precluded essays by women, testifying to the Holy Mountain’s appeal, transcending geography.”

This book presents a significant new reading of the function of divine testing in Luke-Acts. By using narrative criticism, fresh readings are provided on these texts, which are often deemed “difficult” or “unintelligible” by modern readers. Author Cato Gulaker argues that the many allusions to divine testing make good sense within the theological rationale of Luke, including the idea of praying to God in order for him not to lead his petitioners into temptation. As this element of the New Testament writings in general, and Luke in particular, is largely overlooked in academic publications, this book will be vital for scholars, clergy, and the general reader interested in this aspect of the theology and cosmology of the two-part Lukan narrative.

Bible and Theology in Africa

The 20th century made sub-Saharan Africa a Christian continent. This formidable church growth is reflected in a wide range of attempts at contextualizing Christian theology and biblical interpretation in Africa. At a grassroots level ordinary Christians express their faith and read the Bible in ways reflecting their daily situation; at an academic level, theologians and biblical scholars relate the historical traditions and sources of Christianity to the socio- and religio-cultural context of Africa. In response to this, the series Bible and Theology in Africa aims at making African theology and biblical interpretation its subject as well as object, as the concerns of African theologians and biblical interpreters will be voiced and critically analyzed. Both Africans and Western authors are encourgared to consider this series.

PARADOX OF BECOMING Pentecostalicity, Planetarity, and Africanity

Studies in Biblical Greek

This occasional series of monographs is designed to promote and publish the latest research into biblical Greek (Old and New Testaments). The series does not assume that biblical Greek is a distinct dialect within the larger world of koine, but focuses on these corpora because it recognizes the particular interest they generate. Research into the broader evidence of the period, including epigraphical and inscriptional materials, is welcome in the series, provided the results are cast in terms of their bearing on biblical Greek. Primarily, however, the series is devoted to fresh philological, syntactical, text-critical, and linguistic study of the Greek of the biblical books, with the subsidiary aim of displaying the contribution of such study to accurate exegesis.
