This study examines how the process of Christian initiation is catechetically and pastorally practised currently in the Catholic Diocese of Masaka, Uganda. It integrates the author’s pastoral experience in the Diocese with relevant literature in order to examine Solemn Communion. It argues that the catechetical course known as Mugigi, which the missionary White Fathers mostly originally hailing from France introduced into the area of present-day Masaka Diocese circa 1906 and became correlated with the reception of Solemn Communion, would benefit from the indigenous education in the Buganda kingdom, not to mention the Bugandan traditional religious worldview. It concludes that such cultural elements would not only profit the inculturation process but would also inform the concept of Christian initiation.

Martin Luthers Judenfeindschaft ist berüchtigt. Ihr Zusammenhang mit zentralen Themen seiner Theologie ist jedoch umstritten. Die Antisemitismusforschung wiederum hat sich bisher nur wenig für theologische Wurzeln der Judenfeindschaft interessiert. Die Untersuchung führt beide Perspektiven zusammen: Luthers Schrift «Von den Juden und ihren Lügen» (1543) wird nicht nur im Blick auf die darin zum Ausdruck kommende Judenfeindschaft analysiert, sondern auch auf ihren theologischen Gehalt hin befragt. Dadurch verschärft sich das Problem: Der Antisemitismus ist im Zentrum der Theologie des Reformators verankert, in der Christologie und in der Rechtfertigungslehre. Diese Erkenntnis führt zu einer Sicht auf Luthers Theologie, in der diese selbst zum Problem wird. Andreas Pangritz ist Professor für Systematische Theologie an der Evangelisch-Theologischen Fakultät der Universität Bonn. Seine Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind: Theologie des 20. This book assesses the conceptualisation of international mission in the Methodist Church Ghana. It demonstrates that Ghanaian Methodists possess a robust ecclesiology with roots in the Akan concept of «abusua» and an evangelical theology rooted in John Wesley. The author gives interpretations to the ways mission takes place and proposes twelve models of mission whereby members of diasporic communities are agents of mission. As mission is seen a responsibility of the whole church, mission is a common theme related to the migration of Ghanaian Methodists to other contexts, often understood in terms of in the global North. The church’s presence in North America and Europe presents challenges and opportunities that must be negotiated in a broader Methodist mainline milieu.

Questioning Authority analyzes current conflicts concerning authority in the Anglican church and offers a new framework for addressing them. It argues that authority in the church is fundamentally relational rather than juridical. All members of the church have authority to engage in discerning the church’s identity, direction, and mission. Most of this authority is exercised in personal interactions and group practices of consultation and direction. Formal authority in the church confers power so responsibilities can be fulfilled. Church relations always include conflict, which may be creative and helpful rather than divisive. Conflict arises because persons and groups follow Christ in ways related to their own cultural context while also being in communion with others. Communion in the church requires embracing diversity, recognizing and respecting others’ perspectives, and working together to discover and create common ground. Today’s church needs more participatory forms of governance and decision-making that are conciliar and synodal. Ellen K. Wondra, an Episcopal priest, is a member of the World Council of Churches’ Commission on Faith and Order and Research Professor Emerita in Theology and Ethics at the BexleySeabury Seminary Federation in Chicago, Illinois. This book offers a comparative theological exploration of the challenges and opportunities presented by the Qur’ānic representation of Christianity as the People of the Book, ahl al-kitāb, in the Qur’ānic commentary tradition. The research is divided into three parts. The first part explores the Qur’ānic understanding of the People of the Book through traditional Islamic exegesis, known as tafsīr, of four Islamic scholars whose work spans more than a thousand years. Part two takes a closer look at the pre-Islamic period, the occasion of revelation of the Qur’ān as well as the Arabic speaking Christian response to Islam in the post-conquest period. Part Three explores the modern use of the term People of the Book by several scholars in the context of our increasingly interconnected and pluralist societies. Richard Lawrence Kimball is a founding member of the Galway Interfaith Alliance. His interest in Muslim Christian relations began while serving as a U. S. Peace Corps volunteer in Gabes, Tunisia in the 1980s. Here he came into contact with the Christian community of southern Tunisia and in particularly Père Dominique Tommy-Martin of the White Fathers of Africa who has inspired Richard. Père Dominique taught Richard, as well as many others throughout his more than 60 years of ministry, that it is indeed possible to be Christian and to love and respect Islam. He recently received his PhD in Philosophy from the Irish School of Ecumenics, Trinity College, Dublin.

This book examines and compares, from an interdisciplinary perspective of Religious Studies and International Relations, the conduct and rhetoric of the Orthodox Churches of Greece and Cyprus vis-à-vis the ‹Europeanisation› process. This study focuses on the conditionality of their «sense of belonging» in the European Union (EU) as their predisposition is dependent, in part, on their sense of «being», as well as on their perception of an ideal type of Europeanness. In this context, this book offers insights on how the Greek and Cypriot Churches, as soft power actors of domestic and European capacity, perceive Europeanness and Otherness; thereby, the compatibility of the personified Greek and Cypriot states with the EU as a postWestphalian political-cultural entity comes into view.

This book extrapolates a uniquely Pentecostal and incarnational Spirit Christology, inspired by piqued interest in the Holy Spirit and for the purpose of ecumenical dialogue. The method employed is Pentecostal in its emphasis on the Spirit, incarnational in its consideration of the life of Jesus, and Spirit Christological in its uniting of the two. The aim is to supersede the five-fold gospel model by systematizing Pentecostal praxis into a cohesive and identity-giving Spirit Christology. The book distinguishes the components of Pentecostal identity through an investigation of past and current Pentecostal voices, juxtaposes them against secular and other denominational categories, and ultimately arrives at a distinctly Pentecostal conceptualization of Spirit Christology that translates ecumenically and generationally. In fact, this project is the first constructive Spirit Christological endeavor developed by a Pentecostal and dedicated to the specific, Pentecostal issue of fusing holiness for living and power for witness. It is solidly ecumenical, utilizing the theology of Edward Irving, James D. G. Dunn, Karl Barth, Colin Gunton, and David Coffey, and it is the only text that brings these voices together in one volume. A Spirit Christology will be beneficial to a diverse audience of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as academic professionals. The development and explanation of a Pentecostal and incarnational Spirit Christology will be a unique and valuable addition to a variety of classes, including courses on the doctrine of Christ, the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, contemporary theology, and recent Pentecostal theology. Furthermore, the content draws from Pentecostal, Reformed, and Catholic traditions, a conglomerate that will appeal to an ecumenical audience.

Jüdischer Anarchismus fand in der radikalen Religionskritik des 19. Jahrhunderts einen festen identitären Bezugspunkt. Infolge der Oktoberrevolution und der Repression in der Sowjetunion setzten eine religiöse Renaissance und Neubestimmung jüdischer Radikalität ein. Diese Rückkehr zur jüdischen Tradition verschob die Grenzen der jiddischistischen radikalen Subkultur und wurde je nach Standpunkt als religiöser Nonkonformismus, Bedrohung, Verweichlichung oder als Erweiterung epikureischen Denkens und als Bereicherung erfasst. Diese argumentationsanalytische Untersuchung schält die Prozesse der Gruppenbildung heraus, arbeitet verschiedene Begriffe von jüdischer Religion und Lebensform (Yidishkayt) heraus und zeigt, dass nicht Religion, sondern Erkenntnis und Autonomie den Kern der Debatte bildeten.

This book is about the Russian contribution to monasticism on Mount Athos and the Athonite contribution to Russian spirituality and marks the millennium of the Russian presence on Mount Athos. Athos has been the spiritual heart of the Orthodox world for even longer and Russian pilgrims have congregated there throughout its history. Russian monks visiting Athos have returned to their homeland with the treasures of Athonite spirituality such as the practice of hesychasm in the sixteenth century, the Patristic anthology known as the Philokalia in the eighteenth century, and the spiritual classic The Way of a Pilgrim in the nineteenth century. In the twentieth century the Russian monastic population fluctuated wildly, but still they produced influential elders such as St Silouan and Fr Sophrony, and Athonite elders continue to exercise enormous influence on the revived Russian Orthodox Church to this day. The papers collected in this volume, first delivered as contributions to a conference held by the Friends of Mount Athos in February 2017 at Madingley Hall, Cambridge, span the breadth of the millennium.

This book aims to shed new light on asceticism of the heart and imperial Christian aspects in the ascetic life of Melania the Younger, in particular, and of a specific group of Roman aristocratic ascetic women, in general. The author draws on the examination of rhetorical language and textual production of the Life of Melania the Younger written in the fifth century. In so doing, the author investigates the broader religious and socio-cultural contexts of the two forms of conflicting rhetorics in the text, according to socio-rhetorical criticism. The tension of the dual subjectivity arising from the asceticism of the heart and the ideological and material aspects of Christian imperialism in the context of Jerusalem and Constantinople takes the reader into unexplored intellectual territory.

Anhand zweier Fallstudien untersucht Björn Röhrer-Ertl die Entwicklung des Theologischen Programmes zweier evangelischer Pfarrkirchen des Historismus in Bayern. Diese dahinschwindende Tradition hat in den Fallbeispielen als eine wesentliche Ursache einen Wertewandel, weg von der generationenübergreifenden Einordnung in einer Tradition hin zu einem Primat der Autonomie des Individuums. Für den Autor steht es fest: Tradition ist kaum mehr vorhanden, wird kaum mehr verstanden. Er appelliert, diesen gesellschaftlichen Wandel nüchtern anzunehmen und zu gestalten.

Based in New Zealand, the author, an Anglican priest, made a number of pilgrimages 1995– 2008 to the extermination (and other camp) sites of the Third Reich, 1933–45. These find expression in Diary entries that describe the sites as they now are and scope the problems they raise for both Jews and Christians. The book thus places the Holocaust at the centre of Jewish-Christian dialogue. In face of the silence of God and the choiceless choices of the victims, the central question is how we – Jews and Christians – can talk agency either of God or the inmates. With a view to opening a conversation between Auschwitz and Golgotha, the author invites the Jewish interlocutor into a consideration of the Jewish victim Christ in the ‘no-way-out’ of the cross. Can there then be mutual recognition between the many Jews of heroic faith and selfsacrificing love in the death camps and the victim caring Christ? Three examples are cited: a Mrs Levy at Auschwitz; the Paris Rabbi, Berek Kofman; and Janusz Korczak at Treblinka. These and others like them embody an ethic of caring that allow us to be hopeful about the modern world. Raymond Pelly is an Anglican Priest living and working in New Zealand. He has an MA in Theology from Oxford University and a Doctorate in Ecumenical Theology from the University of Geneva. Besides serving in numerous parishes, he has taught at Westcott House, Cambridge (UK); St John’s College, Auckland (NZ); and the University of Massachusetts, Boston Campus (USA). He was also Visiting Scholar at the Episcopal Divinity School, Cambridge, Mass., in 1982/3 and 1995/6. His most recent work, 2005-2014, has been as Honorary Priest Associate at the Cathedral of St Paul, Wellington, New Zealand, where he had a ministry of counselling, spiritual direction and education.

What can man know about God? This question became one of the main problems during the 4th-century Trinitarian controversy, which is the focus of this book. Especially during the second phase of the conflict, the claims of Anomean Eunomius caused an emphatic response of Orthodox writers, mainly Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nyssa. Eunomius formulated two ways of theology to show that we can know both the substance (ousia) and activities (energeiai) of God. The Orthodox Fathers demonstrated that we can know only the external activities of God, while the essence is entirely incomprehensible. Therefore the 4thcentury discussion on whether the Father and the Son are of the same substance was the turning point in the development of negative theology and shaping the Christian conception of God.

Partnership is a controversial concept in Protestant mission. This historical and missiological study traces the relations between Dutch and Indonesian churches from the colonial through the postcolonial era in the history of the Netherlands Missionary Council, the International Missionary Council and the World Council of Churches. Der ägyptische Jurist Muhammad Qadrî Pâshâ (gest. 1886) erstellte Ende des 19. Jh. nach den Kodifikationen zum islamischen Familienrecht und zum islamischen Zivilrecht auch eine solche zum Recht der Religiösen Stiftung (waqf) auf hanafitischer Grundlage. Er orientierte sich dabei vor allem an den klassischen islamischen Rechtswerken und Fatwâ-Sammlungen. Nach dem Muster europäischer Gesetzeswerke untergliederte der Autor das Sachgebiet in einzelne Kapitel und Abschnitte. Damit schuf er ein wichtiges Referenzwerk, welches nach seinem Tode erstmals 1894 in Kairo im Druck erschien. Qadrî Pâshâ nutzte verschiedene Methoden der hanafitischen Lehre, um den Rechtstext an die existierenden gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen und Herausforderungen anzupassen. Die in der Folgezeit veröffentlichten Gesetze der arabischen Länder zur Religiösen Stiftung konnten auf den Text zurückgreifen. Dabei ging und geht es vor allem um eine zeitgemäße Verwaltung und gewinnbringende Nutzung von gestifteten Immobilien. Die kommentierte Übersetzung folgt dem arabischen Original. Hans-Georg Ebert hat die Professur für Islamisches Recht am Orientalischen Institut der Universität Leipzig inne. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind klassisches und modernes Islamisches Recht sowie das Recht der arabischen Länder. Zudem beschäftigt er sich mit dem Verhältnis von Recht und Religion im Islam.

Will someone with a disability, either mental or physical, be recognisable in the heavenly realm? If they no longer have their disabilities, how will we know them? Are disabilities part of who we are? In the case of someone who loses a limb in an accident, it is easy to imagine them with the missing limb restored, but with congenital conditions many complex questions are raised. This book attempts to look at the issues in detail by comparing two key interlocutors, St Augustine and Jean Vanier. Although Augustine lived more than a thousand years ago, his teachings on the subject of heaven are still fundamental to much contemporary theology. Jean Vanier, founder of the L’Arche communities, works with people with learning difficulties. His contribution is supplemented by the work of Henri Nouwen, a Dutch Catholic priest whose writing was heavily influenced by his experiences with L’Arche. Finally, this book also offers some suggestions for the application of the theological debate to pastoral situations. Nicola Santamaria taught maths and psychology in secondary schools for many years, before completing a doctorate in theology at King’s College London. During this time, she worked at St Joseph’s Pastoral Centre for people with learning disabilities and taught at Allen Hall, the Roman Catholic Seminary in the Diocese of Westminster.

Religious freedom, as a fundamental Human right, guaranteed by the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR), constitutes a key-issue that contributes to broadening the reflections on the overall Human Rights-related problematic between East and West, by shading light on the more complex issue pertaining to the conceptualization and implementation of Human Rights in countries belonging to the Eastern Orthodox tradition. The present volume studies the diversity that characterizes the Orthodox theological traditions and interpretations regarding Human Rights, not only in terms of an “external”, or a “strategical” approach of socio-political and ecclesial nature, but also through a reflexive analysis of theological discourses.

The Eldest Brother and New Testament Christology explores the origin of cultural representations of Jesus as an eldest brother. Through ethnographic surveys, author Harald Aarbakke shows that the role of the eldest brother in different African societies is often accompanied by additional roles, among them mediator, protector, and leader. The work is based on the last command of the risen Jesus to his disciples in Matthew’s account of the events that followed the resurrection of Jesus. The command is: «Make disciples of all nations». The command reverses the initial restriction of the disciples to only the lost sheep of the house of Israel. The work presents the command as the climax of Matthew’s post-resurrection account, which is told in four scenes and each of the scenes contains a command. The last command sanctions the mission to the Gentiles without ending the mission to Israel. Making disciples involves baptism to increase the number of Christians (Church growth) and teaching to increase adherence to the teachings of Jesus (Church life).

This monograph demonstrates that the Fourth Gospel is a result of highly creative, hypertextual reworking of the Acts of the Apostles. The detailed reworking consists of around 900 strictly sequentially organized thematic, and at times also linguistic correspondences between John and Acts. The strictly sequential, hypertextual dependence on Acts explains John’s modifications of the synoptic material, relocations thereof, additions to it, and many other surprising features of the Fourth Gospel. Critical explanations of such features, which are offered in this study, ensure the reliability of the new solution to the problem of the relationship between John and the Synoptics.

This book presents the Book of Ecclesiastes as a single coherent work, whose ideas are consistent and collectively form a comprehensive worldview. Moreover, in contrast to the prevailing view in the research literature – it presents the Book of Ecclesiastes as a work with an essentially positive outlook: Kohelet’s fault-finding is aimed not at the world itself, or how it functions, but at the people who persist in missing out on the present, on what it has to offer, and of the ability to enjoy all that exists and is available. Contrasting with these are Koheleth’s positive perscriptions to make the most of the present. To my mind, his remonstrations are meant to «clear the way» for his positive recommendations – to clear the path, as it were, of the obstacles to accepting reality. These two aspects, the negative and the positive, come together in this investigation into Koheleth’s belief, which is founded on an acceptance of all that God has created.

Critical scholarship on the Qur’ān and early Islam has neglected the enigmatic earliest surahs. Advocating a more evolutionary analytical method, this book argues that the basal surahs are logical, clear, and intelligible compositions. The analysis systematically elucidates the apocalyptic context of the Qur’ān’s most archaic layers. Decisive new explanations are given for classic problems such as what the surah of the elephant means, why an anonymous man is said to frown and turn away from a blind man, why the prophet is summoned as one who wraps or cloaks himself, and what the surah of the qadr refers to. Grounded in contemporary context, the analysis avoids reducing these innovative recitations to Islamic, Jewish, or Christian models. By capitalizing on recent advances in fields such as Arabian epigraphy, historical linguistics, Manichaean studies, and Sasanian history, a very different picture of the early quranic milieu emerges. This picture challenges prevailing critical and traditional models alike. Against the view that quranic revelation was a protracted process, the analysis suggests a more compressed timeframe, in which Mecca played relatively little role. The analysis further demonstrates that the earliest surahs were already intimately connected to the progression of the era’s cataclysmic ByzantineSasanian war. All scholars interested in the Qur’ān, early Islam, late antique history, and the apocalyptic genre will be interested in the book’s dynamic new approach to resolving intractable problems in these areas. Daniel Beck is civil litigation counsel for the United States Attorney’s Office. He received his Juris Doctorate degree from Yale Law School, where his research interests concentrated on religious law in Antiquity. This book, which is a collection of various essays on Africa and the Bible, is a mustread for scholars and students who are interested in exploring the intersection between the Bible and public spaces exposing the liberating and oppressing strands of the Bible. Given the enchanted African worldview, which includes belief in miracles, divine healing and prosperity, the Bible is the go-to-authority of many religious activities. The critical question tackled in this volume is: how can Africa read the Bible from its various contexts to recover its usefulness on issues of gender, patriarchy and political and economic liberation? Yet equally, how do we guard against oppressive discourses that find support from the Bible such as polygamy, viewing women as unequal to men and growing economic disparities? In addition, throughout history, Africans are made to be comfortable with theologies that further distance them away from economic and political processes, such as the belief in an angry God who punishes and demands utter obedience—theologies which have sustained particular asymmetric socio-economic and political structures across the continent. This book is important because it traces the sociological contours in the Bible in relation to Africa, sensitizing us to the liberating strands and, at the same time, making us aware of the pathos associated with the literary reading of the Bible. Abram to Abraham explores the Abraham saga (11:27-22:24) through a literary lens, following the legendary figure of Abraham as he navigates the arduous odyssey to nationhood. Rather than overlook the textual discrepancies, repetitions and contradictions long noted by diachronic scholars, this study tackles them directly, demonstrating how many problems of the ancient text in fact hold the key to deeper understanding of the narrative and its objectives. Therefore, the book frequently notes the classic division of the text according to primary sources, but offers an alternative, more harmonious reading based on the assumption that the narrative forms a single, intentionally designed unit. The narrative’s artistic design is especially evident in its arrangement of the two halves of the story around the protagonists’ change of name. The stories of Abram and Sarai in the first half of the cycle (11:27-16:16) are parallel to the stories of Abraham and Sarah in the second half (18:1-22:24). A close reading of this transformation in the biblical narrative illuminates the moral and theological values championed by the figure of Abraham as luminary, soldier, family man, and loyal subject of God. Jonathan Grossman is a faculty member of the Department of Bible at Bar Ilan University. His main field of interest is the Bible as literature. In the Bible, the land of Israel is more than a piece of ground. It is a theological symbol, because it was an essential part of Israel’s practice of its relationship with God. The land is connected to a lifestyle and to the carrying out of religious acts, like the sacrifices and the celebrations. Aspects of this are the use of the land and the enactment of ecological and humanitarian obligations. In this volume, we concentrate on the religious viewpoints, especially how the promised land can be seen from the Old and New Testament perspective. Before practical conclusions are drawn, it is important to have a good overview of the subject in the entire Bible. The chosen approach is historic-canonical and implies that we use the order of Bible books from the Hebrew canon. Two additional chapters show the Jewish and Islamic viewpoints. This book has received the Franz Delitzsch Award 2018.

Die Studie behandelt mit Dtn 10,1211,32 einen bislang wenig beachteten Abschnitt des Deuteronomiums. Im ersten synchronen Hauptteil wird die Perikope nach text- und sprachwissenschaftlichen Kriterien untersucht und ihre literarische und rhetorische Struktur erschlossen. Der zweite diachrone Teil widmet sich der literargeschichtlichen und theologischen Analyse des Textes. Dieser besteht aus einem vermutlich vorexilischen Kern, der während und nach dem Exil sukzessiv erweitert wurde. Dtn 10,12ff. erweist sich dabei nicht nur als Keimzelle des paränetischen Rahmenwerkes des Deuteronomiums, sondern spiegelt zugleich auch dessen theologiegeschichtliche Entwicklung wider.

Das Buch versammelt Beiträge zum Thema Ästhetik, sinnlicher Genuss und gute Manieren nicht nur als Selbstzweck, sondern auch als möglichem Ort der Begegnung mit Gott und Menschen. Die einzelnen Beiträge beleuchten das Thema aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven und nehmen dabei einschlägige biblische Texte sowie deren Kulturräume in den Blick. The remarkable poem in Deut 32:1–43 is a triple conclusion to the life of Moses, to Deuteronomy and to the Pentateuch/Torah. In content and style, it is an encapsulation of history, prophecy, and wisdom, of a poetic quality hard to surpass. The song was supposed to be learned by heart, was given its own scroll in Qumran, and was, as far as we know, the first Hebrew text to be written colographically. Yet, the poem is shrouded in vagueness and ambiguity, and scholars have pondered its origins, function, meaning, and message. The Origins of Deuteronomy 32: Intertextuality, Memory, Identity plunges into the debate. Extensive theoretical discussions form the foundations for an analysis of similarities and dissimilarities between Deut 32 and other texts from many different perspectives. This indicates a close relationship to the Persian period edition of the Book of Isaiah. In light of a reconstruction of Yehud, theories of social memory and social identity formation are employed in a discussion on the functions of Deuteronomy and the Book of Isaiah, yielding results for our understanding of Deut 32. The origins and textual relationships are considered in light of newer insights on scribes working together. This radically changes the framework within which we must see the origins of Deut 32 (or any text) and its textual relationships. With its combination of theoretical expositions and applications to the text, this book will be useful for both scholar and student.

Hebrews is a book of riddles. Recent scholarship has arrived at an impasse over difficulties and apparent contradictions within the argument. A new look at Hebrews is needed. This book examines the use of Psalm 95 in Hebrews. The psalm recalls a narrative world and renews an exhortation that reoccurs throughout Israel’s history. Hebrews takes up this summons and the story behind it (Heb 3-4, 10-12) to urge its audience to be faithful. This exhortation unites God’s people past and present (Heb 1, 13). The results of this study are applied to the new covenant (Heb 8) and reveal that a reexamination of common assumptions about Hebrews are necessary. A review of the history of interpretation shows that while assumptions about Hebrews have an early beginning, they have not gone unchallenged.

In this thought-provoking study, Dan Lioy asserts that a Christocentric and Christotelic perspective is an unmistakable feature of Paul’s discourse. The journey begins with an analysis of the old Adamic creation in Genesis 1–3 before digressing into representative passages from Paul’s writings, touching on such themes as new creation theology, the apostle’s apocalyptic interpretation of reality, and his theology of the cross. Heilige prägen Zeiten und Orte des Lebens – sie erscheinen uns vertraut und bleiben oft zugleich fremd. Wie die Bedeutung von «heilig» verdeutlicht, hängt der Sinn dieses Wortes mit «Ewigkeit», «Unantastbarkeit» sowie «Erhabenheit» zusammen. Der Aura des Heiligen entsprechen Scheu, Ehrfurcht und Dankbarkeit. Das Heilige ist ohne Zweifel eine zentrale religiöse Kategorie: Nahezu alles kann zu etwas Heiligem werden; in fast allem kann sich Heiliges manifestieren. Dan Lioy earned his PhD in New Testament from North-West University (NWU) in South Africa. He is a professor at the Potchefstroom Campus of NWU, Senior Research Manager in the Postgraduate School of South African Theological Seminary, and a permanent faculty member in the graduate programs division of the Institute of Lutheran Theology. Lioy is also an ordained minister in the North American Lutheran Church. Three of his earlier Peter Lang monographs include Evolutionary Creation in Biblical and Theological Perspective (2011), Axis of Glory (2010), and The Search for Ultimate Reality (2005).

Dabei werden diffizile Fragen des Miteinanders keinesfalls umgangen – im Gegenteil. Thematisiert werden auch (inner)islamische Perspektiven, die von fortschrittlicher und selbstkritischer Reflexion zeugen. So behandeln die Aufsätze aktuelle Fragen wie z.B. solche nach der Gestaltung eines islamischen Religions- und Lebensverständnisses in der Diaspora, der Interpretation der Scharia und dem Verhältnis des Islam zur Demokratie westlicher Prägung. Es kommen in der Reihe für Osnabrücker Islamstudien nicht nur renommierte Wissenschaftler verschiedener Disziplinen zur Sprache, sondern auch Imame, Lehrkräfte des Islam und aktive Verbandsmitglieder.
