n increasing number of contributions have appeared in recent years on the subject of Audiovisual Translation (AVT), particularly in relation to dubbing and subtitling.

The broad scope of this branch of Translation Studies is challenging because it brings together diverse disciplines, including film studies, translatology, semiotics, linguistics, applied linguistics, cognitive psychology, technology and ICT. This volume addresses issues relating to AVT research and didactics. The first section is dedicated to theoretical aspects in order to stimulate further debate and encourage progress in research-informed teaching. The second section focuses on a less developed area of research in the field of AVT: its potential use in foreign language pedagogy.

This collection of articles is intended to create a discourse on new directions in AVT and foreign language learning. The book begins with reflections on wider methodological issues, advances to a proposed model of analysis for colloquial speech, touches on more ‘niche’ aspects of AVT (e.g. surtitling), progresses to didactic applications in foreign language pedagogy and learning at both linguistic and cultural levels, and concludes with a practical proposal for the use of AVT in foreign language classes. his is the first volume to deal specifically with the quality of subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) in Europe, with contributions from the UK, Spain, Italy, Poland, Denmark, France and Germany. Drawing on the results of the EU-funded project DTV4ALL, the book looks at the issue of quality in the reception of SDH in Europe as a combination of three factors: what viewers think about SDH, how they understand these subtitles and how they view them. The viewers’ preferences have been obtained through questionnaires and their comprehension has been analysed with tests, involving clips with SDH and questions. The viewers’ perception has been measured with eye-tracking technology, involving the analysis of 71,070 subtitles in what is so far the largest international eye-tracking study on subtitling. With this research, we have sought to obtain both subjective (preferences) and objective (comprehension and perception) data that can inform national guidelines on SDH. The Reflective Translator Strategies and Affects of Self-directed Professionals

A

lthough university studies do not always provide translators with the necessary skills, many of them continue in their professional capacity, which is understood to be the result of self-directed learning processes. Thus, translators seem to be not only agents of their own education, but also products of translation operations. The data obtained by means of a questionnaire covers three areas: specialisation and the market, qualifications and competence as well as affects and attitudes. Also, a general description of translators’ specific self-directed learning strategies is provided. The results reveal that institutional training has virtually no importance in the professional education of translators and that the skills missed most in their everyday activity are those they failed to acquire by means of self-directed learning procedures.

Lost in the Eurofog: The Textual Fit of Translated Law

he book is one of the few in-depth investigations into the nature of EU legal translation and its impact on national legal languages. It is also the first attempt to characterise EU Polish, a language of supranational law and a hybrid variant of legal Polish emerging via translation. The book applies Chesterman’s concept of textual fit, that is how translations differ from non-translations, to demonstrate empirically on large corpora how the Polish eurolect departs from the conventions of legal and general Polish both at the macrostructural and the microstructural level. The findings are juxtaposed with the pre-accession version of Polish law to track the «Europeanisation» of legal Polish – recent changes brought about by the unprecedented inflow of EU translations.

esearch on dubbing in audiovisual productions has been prolific in the past few decades, which has helped to expand our understanding of the history and impact of dubbing worldwide. Much of this work, however, has been concerned with the linguistic aspects of audiovisual productions, whereas studies emphasizing the importance of visual and acoustic dimensions are few and far between.

Against this background, Dubbing, Film and Performance attempts to fill a gap in Audiovisual Translation (AVT) research by investigating dubbing from the point of view of film and sound studies. The author argues that dubbing ought to be viewed and analysed holistically in terms of its visual, acoustic and linguistic composition. The ultimate goal is to raise further awareness of the changes dubbing brings about by showing its impact on characterization. To this end, a tripartite model has been devised to investigate how visual, aural and linguistic elements combine to construct characters and their performance in the original productions and how these are deconstructed and reconstructed in translation through dubbing. To test the model, the author analyses extracts of the US television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its French dubbed version.

Die in diesem Sammelband dokumentierte Reflexion über die Projekterfahrungen knüpft an die Polyphonie des Romans und an das methodisch-didaktische Erarbeiten einer Übersetzerstimme an. Der Band dient der Darstellung der Konzeption des Lehrprojektes und der hieraus gewonnenen Erkenntnisse und leistet somit einen Beitrag zur Translationswissenschaft.

ranslation scholars have for a long time been arguing in favor of a shift in paradigms to redefine the relationship between translation and the spreading of knowledge. Although a substantial share of worldwide knowledge is conveyed thanks to translation, the effects of this state of affairs upon the ways in which knowledge is actually built are all too rarely taken into account. This is particularly the case in the humanities.

The papers presented in this volume fall into three thematic categories – cultural transfer, terminology and literature. The authors are all scholars in the humanities, and some of them are also translators. They analyze the effects of translation in diverse domains such as the intercultural exchanges among Far Eastern countries, and between Asia and the West; the constitution of terminologies; clinical practices in psychoanalysis; and the impact on the definition of literary genres.

Each contribution shows how the act of translation is an integral part of the humanities, producing effects which may often be unforeseen and surprising but are always occasions for innovation. This volume contains contributions in English and French.

umour found in audiovisual products is, of course, performative in nature. If we consider instances of humour – any droll moment occurring in today’s fare of mixedgenre products as a composite of cognition, emotion, interaction and expression – we see that the verbal code becomes just one component of four equally significant elements.

And, as ‘expression’ is not limited to verbal output alone, humour may of course be created in absence of a verbal code. Translating humour for audiovisuals is not too different from translating verbal humour tout court. What makes humour occurring within audiovisual texts more problematic is the fact that it may be visually anchored; in other words a gag or a joke may pivot on verbal content directed at a specific element that is present within the graphic system of the same text. As the term itself suggests, audiovisuals contain two overlying structures: a visual and an auditory channel each of which contain a series of both verbal and non-verbal elements which inextricably cross-cut one another.

The contributors in this collection of essays present a series of case studies from films and video-games exemplifying problems and solutions to audiovisual humour in the dubs and subs in a variety of language combinations.

ubtitling films in another language becomes especially complex when the original language deviates from its standard form. Films that feature non-standard pronunciation, dialects or other varieties of language, especially when juxtaposed with more standard uses, are said to display «linguistic variation». As language use is central to characters’ identities and to a film’s plot, it is essential to retain the source language (SL) specificity as fully as possible in the target language (TL) subtitles so the target audience can experience the film as authentically as possible. Given its considerable difficulty, subtitling in this manner is often advised against, avoided or, when attempted, subjected to considerable criticism.

This book focuses on a collection of British and French films selected for the range of approaches that they adopt in portraying linguistic variation. Each chapter explores the challenges posed by the subtitling of such linguistic difference in the given films and the corresponding solutions offered by their subtitlers. Drawing on these findings and referring to contemporary thinking in the field of translation studies, this book argues that with insight and skill, linguistic variation can be preserved in film subtitles.

Previous studies have explored the relevance of the cultural and linguistic positioning of different translators, but thus far no corpus-based study of nominalization has been undertaken in relation to translator style. This book uses quantitative and qualitative analyses of the nominalized transform of finite verbal forms in three Chinese-to-English translations to distinguish between translator styles, concluding that nominalization is a key identifier in translations.

This book provides a comprehensive picture of the use of nominalization in English translations of Chinese literary prose and, more generally, encourages further study into nominalization in translation.

Translating Audio Description Scripts Translation as a New Strategy of Creating Audio Description

ranslating audio description scripts from foreign into source language seems to be a tempting alternative strategy of creating audio description scripts in those countries where audio description is still scarce. This book presents the results of a three-stage study.

This study was conducted to test whether the translation of audio description scripts written by experienced British audio describers into Polish is a solution that is less time and money consuming. Besides it was analysed whether the scripts created through the application of the translation strategy preserve the quality that satisfies the target recipients. The obtained results prove that translation of audio description scripts is not only possible, but also beneficial when it comes to time consumption, costs and quality of audio description.

robleme der Librettoübersetzung setzt den Fokus auf eine in der Forschung lange Zeit vernachlässigte Gattung, das Libretto. Auch die Librettoübersetzung nimmt wenig Raum ein in den Wissenschaften. Die Analyse dreier Übersetzungen ins Deutsche zu Mozarts Oper Le nozze di Figaro veranschaulicht die besondere Schwierigkeit dieser Übersetzungsart. Durch die enge Verzahnung des Librettos mit der Musik (Metrik, Reim, Rhythmus) muss der Übersetzer stets Kompromisse eingehen. Musik und Sprache haben einige Berührungspunkte, beide können etwa nach semiotischen und suprasegmentalen Aspekten untersucht werden.

Die Arbeit ist an der Schnittstelle von Sprach-, Übersetzungs- und Musikwissenschaft zu verorten. Dank ihrer Funktion als nationale Kulturträger sind Opernübersetzungen auch heute noch von großer Bedeutung.

iorgio Caproni (1912–1990) est désormais reconnu comme l’un des plus grands poètes italiens de son temps. Parallèlement à son œuvre poétique, il a exercé, comme nombre de ses contemporains, une activité de traducteur à partir des plus grands noms de la littérature française du XXe siècle : Proust, Céline, Apollinaire, Char, pour ne citer qu’eux. À la croisée d’une démarche traductologique et littéraire, nous voyons comment, par le truchement d’autres auteurs, d’un autre genre (la prose), d’une autre langue (le français), l’acte traductif se constitue en laboratoire où se prépare le tournant de la poésie à venir de Caproni, selon la formule que le philosophe Giorgio Agamben a utilisé à son égard.

C’est à travers la traduction de ces auteurs (autour des années 1960 notamment) que s’élabore la poétique traductive de Caproni, caractérisée par la déconstruction du lien syntaxique. La ponctuation utilisée comme instrument rythmique et mélodique scande le texte, donnant lieu à un jeu sur l’instance locutoire que l’on retrouve ensuite dans la poésie. En effet, le recueil Congedo del viaggiatore cerimonioso (1965) marque l’apparition d’un personnage et le début d’une nouvelle phase de l’œuvre. La série de personnages qui habite la seconde partie de l’œuvre de Giorgio Caproni témoigne d’une stratégie de théâtralisation de l’espace poétique forgée dans les traductions. Mais cette simulation théâtrale n’est qu’une des modalités utilisées par le poète pour exprimer la perte de confiance dans le pouvoir de la parole à exprimer le réel. Ce constat ouvre vers les thèmes de la dissolution du sujet et de l’absence de Dieu : thèmes à entendre moins du point de vue d’une pensée philosophique que du langage musical, vers lequel cette poésie tend et qui en fonde la modernité.

sta obra explora el complejo entramado de poder que se intuye tras la publicación de la traducción de una obra literaria. Partiendo de la Sociología Crítica de Pierre Bourdieu, el concepto de poder de Michel Foucault o el de paratexto de Gérard Genette, así como de los avances previos realizados por autores como André Lefevere o Michaela Wolf, María López Ponz explora los condicionantes socioculturales que influyen en el resultado final de un proceso de traducción. Para ello, se sirve también de un curioso caso de estudio: las traducciones duplicadas de diversas obras pertenecientes a la literatura hispano-estadounidense. Así, las circunstancias laborales, ideológicas o económicas que rodean el trasvase salen a la luz en este estudio que sitúa al traductor en el centro de la teoría de la traducción.

La literatura vasca traducida

L

a traducción hacia el euskera ha sido una actividad vital para el desarrollo de la literatura vasca. Por su parte, la traducción en la direccionalidad opuesta es un fenómeno bastante reciente, aunque cada vez más habitual, y constituye una herramienta vital para la difusión de la literatura vasca. Este libro pretende ofrecer una visión general de la traducción de literatura vasca a otras lenguas. Para ello, ha sido necesario llevar a cabo una primera labor de catalogación y análisis desde varias perspectivas: autores, títulos, lenguas meta, etc.

Al tratarse de un sistema literario diglósico y bastante complejo, se han identificado diferentes tipos de traducción en el análisis del catálogo, los cuales se analizarán en la segunda parte del libro. Para ello, se ha limitado el objeto de estudio a un corpus reducido de varias obras de Bernardo Atxaga, mediante el cual se han intentado describir las diferencias existentes entre la autotraducción, la autotraducción en colaboración y la traducción alógrafa, y también realizar una comparación entre traducciones directas e indirectas. La principal hipótesis que planteamos es que cada tipo de traducción ofrecerá un resultado diferente.

he literature on translation and technology has generally taken two forms: general overviews, in which the tools are described, and functional descriptions of how such tools and technologies are implemented in specific projects, often with a view to improving the quality of translator training. There has been far less development of the deeper implications of technology in its cultural, ethical, political and social dimensions. In an attempt to address this imbalance, the present volume offers a collection of articles, written by leading experts in the field, that explore some of the current communicational and informational trends that are defining our contemporary world and impinging on the translation profession. The contributions have been divided into three main areas in which translation and technology come together: (1) social spheres, (2) education and training and (3) research.

This book discusses the challenges facing translators of fictional works from German into English using as examples English translations of canonical German novellas by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Theodor Storm, Gerhart Hauptmann, Thomas Mann and Franz Kafka.

The author addresses the difficulties of translating in the poststructuralist era, when every fictional work potentially has a large number of interpretations and, therefore, at least the same number of possible translations. Considering interpretations of the original text in detail not only improves the reader’s understanding and ability to criticize the translated text, but it will also provide valuable insight into the possible intentions of the writer. An initial linguistic observation of a target text can therefore lead to a fruitful connection between the linguistic and literary analysis of translated works. n 2005, a new publisher entered the New Zealand market – the first to specialise in English translations of children’s books. The notion of «homegrown translations» was a new departure for a post-colonial book market dominated for several decades by literary nationalism. This study aims to illuminate the history of translated children’s books in New Zealand and the sociocultural context in which the translations of this new publisher are produced and received in order to account for the peculiarities of marketing and reception associated with them. For this purpose, diachronic and synchronic perspectives are combined with case studies of individual books and series.

Translation and Popular Music Transcultural Intimacy in Turkish–Greek Relations

esearch on translation and music has so far focused mainly on «art music» and on issues such as quality, singability and accessibility. Studies which seek to embed translation and music within their historical and sociocultural contexts are relatively rare. This book aims to shed light on how translations of popular music contribute to fostering international relations by focusing on a case study of Turkish-Greek rapprochement in the last two decades. It provides a brief account of the thaw in relations between the two countries and then examines the ways in which translation and music have played a role in these changes. By looking at the phenomenon through the music’s various forms of materiality (on paper, in audio and through the internet) and the different forms the accompanying translations take, and by drawing on a range of disciplines (popular music studies, sociology of music, ethnomusicology, social anthropology, comparative literature and fan studies), the book aims to foreground the multifaceted nature of translation and music and their wide-ranging impact on society and international relations.

In today’s globalised society, translation and interpreting are gaining visibility and relevance as a means to foster communication and dialogue in increasingly multicultural and multilingual environments. Practised since time immemorial, both activities have become more complex and multifaceted in recent decades, intersecting with many other disciplines. New Trends in Translation Studies is an international series with the main objectives of promoting the scholarly study of translation and interpreting and of functioning as a forum for the translation and interpreting research community.

This series publishes research on subjects related to multimedia translation and interpreting, in their various social roles. It is primarily intended to engage with contemporary issues surrounding the new multidimensional environments in which translation is flourishing, such as audiovisual media, the internet and emerging new media and technologies. It sets out to reflect new trends in research and in the profession, to encourage flexible methodologies and to promote interdisciplinary research ranging from the theoretical to the practical and from the applied to the pedagogical.

New Trends in Translation Studies publishes translation- and interpreting-oriented books that present high-quality scholarship in an accessible, reader-friendly manner. The series embraces a wide range of publications – monographs, edited volumes, conference proceedings and translations of works in translation studies which do not exist in English. The editor, Professor Jorge Díaz-Cintas, welcomes proposals from all those interested in being involved with the series. The working language of the series is English, although in exceptional circumstances works in other languages can be considered for publication.

Proposals dealing with specialised translation, translation tools and technology, audiovisual translation and the field of accessibility to the media are particularly welcomed.

This series is based at the Centre for Translation Studies (CenTraS), University College London.

Se pondrá el énfasis en las relaciones entre las literaturas ibéricas, las relaciones entre las literaturas americanas y las relaciones transatlánticas, además de la recepción de literatura extranjera en el contexto ibérico, intentando aglutinar un discurso crítico de carácter multidisciplinar que resulte una alternativa al hispanismo tradicional en su búsqueda de un marco auténticamente comparativo e intercultural. La colección acoge monografías, publicaciones colectivas, actas de congresos y adaptaciones de tesis doctorales en inglés, en castellano y otras lenguas peninsulares.
