The Antiphilosophers

I

n this volume, author Steven L. Bindeman presents a survey of the key figures in postmodern antiphilosophy. Noting that the main thrust of their work can be found in their need to respond to the threat of nihilism, he is guided by the question, if the path to abstract truth is no longer viable, what then? He shows how the antiphilosophers turn their focus on the complexity of lived experience in place of the search for certainty, which was in their view what previously had guided the dominating discourse of the modernist philosophical tradition. Through close examination of a broad variety of texts, Bindeman illuminates how the antiphilosophers initiate a new way of doing philosophy, one which prefers to examine the question, Does it work? instead of, Is it true? Moreover, Bindeman demonstrates how the antiphilosophers are united in questioning the centrality of the great cornerstones of western metaphysics – time, self, universe, and God – because of their insistence that there is no way to reach beyond any of these words to the actual things to which they refer.

Nature: Its Conceptual Architecture

M

any philosophers adopt methods that emulate those of the natural sciences. They call such an overall approach naturalism, and consider it indispensable for fruitful philosophical debate in various areas. In spite of this consensus however, little is ever said about how naturalism depends on the underlying idea of nature, which we often endorse unconsciously. If we can determine how naturalism reflects an underlying account of nature, we would be in a better position to distinguish between different kinds of naturalism and to assess the merits of each. This book undertakes a sustained study of the concept of nature to answer this need. It examines in detail how conceptual, historical, and scientific constraints affect the concept of nature in various domains of philosophy, and how, in the opposite sense, these constraints are themselves affected by the concept of nature. In so doing, this book relates the conceptual framework of scientific inquiry back to the lived experience that is proper to everyday self-understanding.

his book examines recent debates on the political dynamics of cosmopolitanism, particularly in its connection with European civil society and the public sphere. The aim of the volume is to trace to what extent cosmopolitanism corresponds to «second modernity», with the latter concept referring to the potential for consensus, the creation of multiple political alternatives and the recognition of otherness. The book accordingly explores questions about democratic legitimacy and the formation of social and political institutions and presents empirical research on phenomena such as global violence.

Dies liegt einerseits an der Komplexität und Varianz psychischer Störungen. he first time that Nietzsche crossed the path of Dostoevsky was in the winter of 1886– 87. While in Nice, Nietzsche discovered in a bookshop the volume L’esprit souterrain.

Two years later, he defined Dostoevsky as the only psychologist from whom he had anything to learn. The second, metaphorical encounter between Nietzsche and Dostoevsky happened on the verge of nihilism. Nietzsche announced the death of God, whereas Dostoevsky warned against the danger of atheism.

This book describes the double encounter between Nietzsche and Dostoevsky. Following the chronological thread offered by Nietzsche’s correspondence, the author provides a detailed analysis of Nietzsche’s engagement with Dostoevsky from the very beginning of his discovery to the last days before his mental breakdown. The second part of this book aims to dismiss the wide-spread and stereotypical reading according to which Dostoevsky foretold and criticized in his major novels some of Nietzsche’s most dangerous and nihilistic theories. In order to reject such reading, the author focuses on the following moral dilemma: If God does not exist, is everything permitted?

he emerging development of genetic enhancement technologies has recently become the focus of a public and philosophical debate between proponents and opponents of a liberal eugenics – that is, the use of these technologies without any overall direction or governmental control. Inspired by Foucault’s, Agamben’s and Esposito’s writings about biopower and biopolitics, the author sees both positions as equally problematic, as both presuppose the existence of a stable, autonomous subject capable of making decisions concerning the future of human nature, while in the age of genetic technology the nature of this subjectivity shall be less an origin than an effect of such decisions. Bringing together a biopolitical critique of the way this controversial issue has been dealt with in liberal moral and political philosophy with a philosophical analysis of the nature of and the relation between life, politics, and technology, the author sets out to outline the contours of a more responsible engagement with genetic technologies based on the idea that technology is an intrinsic condition of humanity.

The philosophical influence is a concept, a methodological tool and a process worth inquiring, because it sets the frame for the philosopher’s contribution into tradition. This study takes a close look at the philosophical influence on the dependence and inter-dependence between ideas and concepts, currents and tendencies and the experiences that every philosopher inherited from past tradition. It also presents four philosophers in order to identify the roots of influence: Arthur Schopenhauer, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Friedrich Nietzsche and Emil Cioran.

Quand le social vient au sens ouvre un dialogue novateur entre philosophie et sciences sociales et historiques, à la croisée de la tradition socio-phénoménologique héritée de l’œuvre pionnière de Schütz et de la tradition herméneutique de Dilthey à Ricœur. Un même fil conducteur parcourt la trame du livre : seule la « voie longue » de l’herméneutique, en reconnaissant la doublure de l’acte d’interpréter (à la fois comme pratique ordinaire au plan anthropologique et comme activité scientifique au plan épistémologique), peut se coordonner avec les réquisits d’une sociologie phénoménologique du monde-de-la-vie. L’ouvrage offre, sous ce cadre, toute une palette de réflexions qui concernent aussi bien l’épistémologie de l’histoire que la sociologie des institutions et l’anthropologie sociale du soi. Dans ce mouvement de va-et-vient entre réflexivité sur les sciences humaines et réflexivité des agents ordinaires sur leurs actions, l’auteur confronte en même temps l’herméneutique avec d’autres auteurs (Weber, Goffman, Foucault, Boltanski, Strawson, etc.) et autant de traditions correspondantes (positivisme, sociologies pragmatistes et pragmatiques, philosophie analytique).

Der Bedeutung und Funktion von Metaphern nachzugehen und darüber aufzuklären, ist Aufgabe der Metaphorologie. Dieses Buch legt eine differenzierte Auseinandersetzung mit Hans Blumenbergs Metaphorologie vor, deren unterschiedliche Konzeptionen die Autorin in drei Schritten darstellt und erläutert.

Ein wesentliches Ergebnis, das die Konzeptionen eint, liegt in der anthropologischen Neubestimmung des Menschen. Der speziellen Bedeutung von Meeresmetaphern in philosophischen Texten wird am Beispiel ausgewählter Autoren wie Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Simmel und Canetti nachgegangen, für die das Meer eine jeweils unterschiedliche metaphorologische Bedeutung hat.

Das vorliegende Buch führt Schritt für Schritt an die Themen und Problemstellungen der Farbbemerkungen Wittgensteins heran und liefert umfangreiche Erläuterungen zu den wichtigsten Textpassagen. Dies ist bemerkenswert, weil das bruchstückhafte Textmaterial aus den beiden letzten Lebensjahren Wittgensteins eine klare Struktur vermissen lässt, die darin aufgeworfenen Fragen häufig befremdlich anmuten und größtenteils ohne Antwort bleiben. The Yearbook on History and Interpretation of Phenomenology 2015 is dedicated to the question of generativity, and more broadly to the generative aspects of and in contemporary phenomenology. We continue to proceed in Husserlian research as well as to address newly emerging contemporary cultural, political, and ecological phenomena. This invites and welcomes a creative involvement with a generative phenomenological approach, which tries to address such phenomena as the liminality and volatility of experience, interpersonal and intercultural communication, home and alienness, identity and difference, globalization and fundamentalism, migration and interculturalism, and searches for the meaning of authentic sociality, morality or religiosity of human persons.

The book investigates the ontology and logic of quantum physics. The first part discusses the relationship of theory and observation and different views on the ontological status of scientific theories. It introduces the fundamentals of quantum mechanics and some of its interpretations and their compatibility with various ontological positions. In the second part, implications of quantum mechanics on classical logic, especially on the distributive law and bivalence, as discussed by Garrett Birkhoff & John von Neumann (1936) and Hilary Putnam (1968), and their counterarguments are reconstructed and discussed. It is concluded that classical logic is sufficient for dealing with quantum mechanical propositions.

In this previously unpublished study dating back more than a half a century, Heelan brings his background as both a physicist and a philosopher to his reflections on Werner Heisenberg’s physical philosophy. Including considerably broader connections to the contributions of Niels Bohr, Wolfgang Pauli, and Albert Einstein, this study also reflects Heelan’s experience in Eugene Wigner’s laboratory at Princeton along with his reflections on working with Erwin Schrödinger dating from Heelan’s years at the Institute for Advanced Cosmology in Dublin.

A contribution to continental philosophy of science, the phenomenological and hermeneutic resources applied in this book to the physical and ontological paradoxes of quantum physics, especially in connection with laboratory science and measurement, theory and model making, will enrich students of the history of science as well as those interested in different approaches to the historiography of science.

The subject of the book is a reconsideration of the internalistic model of composition of the Platonic type, more radical than traditional, post-Aristotelian externalistic compositionism, and its application in the field of the ontology of quantum theory. At the centre of quantum ontology is nonseparability. Quantum wholes are atemporal wholes governed by internalistic logic and they are primitive, global physical entities, requiring an extreme relativization of the fundamental notions of mechanics. That ensures quantum theory to be fully consistent with the relativistic causal structure, without any spacelike nonlocality and time asymmetry, and makes the quantum blockworld ontology inevitable. It seems that the more internally relativized physics is, the more Platonic it becomes.

Rudolf Hermann Lotze (1817–1881) fut l’une des figures majeures de la philosophie allemande au XIXe siècle. Philosophe, logicien, psychologue, médecin, il a connu à son époque une renommée extraordinaire. Professeur de philosophie à l’Université de Göttingen, où il succéda à Herbart, il mena un parcours de recherche aussi original qu’influent. Entre romantisme et positivisme, entre naturalisme et historicisme, sa doctrine ne s’est jamais confondue avec les courants les plus importants de son époque. Admirée et suivie, autant en Allemagne qu’à l’étranger, sa pensée fut ensuite, après sa mort, condamnée à l’oubli en raison de son supposé éclectisme méthodologique et, finalement, classée sous la rubrique ambiguë d’« idéal-réalisme ». Le legs de Lotze s’inscrit dans un rapport complexe à la phénoménologie, à la philosophie analytique naissante, au pragmatisme américain et au néokantisme allemand jusqu’à Heidegger. L’analyse de ce legs n’a cependant jamais bénéficié d’une réflexion critique capable d’en mesurer la portée et les limites. Par un travail d’évaluation historico-critique, ce volume se propose de combler cette lacune.

The Supersensible in Kant’s Critique of Judgment

Many interested reader will have put aside a work by Edith Stein due to its seeming inaccessibility, with the awareness that there was something important there for a future occasion. This collection of essays attempts to provide an idea of what this important something might be and give a key to the reading of Stein’s various works. It is divided into two parts reflecting Stein’s development. The first part, «Phenomenology», deals with those features of Stein’s work that set it apart from that of other phenomenologists, notably Husserl. The second part is entitled «Metaphysics», although Stein the phenomenologist would, like Husserl, initially have shied away from this designation. However, as Stein gradually understood the importance of the Christian faith for completing the phenomenological project of founding the sciences, and accepted it as indispensable for a philosophical view of the whole, her «attempt at an ascent to the meaning of being» can legitimately be called metaphysics, even as it also constitutes a fundamental criticism of Aristotle and Aquinas.

Der Autor verfolgt die lateinamerikanischen Antworten auf diese Frage von der Eroberung des Kontinents bis in die Gegenwart. Er zeigt, wie sich Philosophen, Völkerrechtler und Diplomaten angesichts des iberischen Kolonialismus für eine gezügelte humanitäre Interventionspolitik einsetzen können. Die behutsame Rekonstruktion einer lateinamerikanischen Perspektive liefert eine umfassende und detaillierte, nicht-eurozentrische Sicht auf die Geschichte der Menschenrechte. Dieser alternative Zugang zu Debatten des Völkerrechts, der Theorie des gerechten Krieges und der Ethik der internationalen Beziehungen trägt zu einem interkulturellen Verständnis der Menschenrechte und ihrer Durchsetzung bei.

Chun-yip Lowe beschäftigt sich in seinem Buch mit dem Völkerrechtsbegriff bei Kant und Rawls. Er zeigt, dass ein im Sinne der kantischen Moralphilosophie und politischen Philosophie vernünftig Handelnder auch den Forderungen von Öffentlichkeit und Recht genügen kann. Der Autor widmet sich den grundsätzlichen Bedingungen des Völkerrechts, welche die Theorie des Gesellschaftsvertrags sowie der Öffentlichkeit betreffen.

Außerdem befasst er sich mit der Anwendung dieser Bedingungen auf die kantische Trichotomie: das Staatsbürgerrecht, das Völkerrecht und das Weltbürgerrecht. Chun-yip Lowe zeigt anhand dieser Trichotomie, dass die kantische Moral- und politische Philosophie eine mögliche Grundlage für die Lösung internationaler Probleme bildet.

Das Problem der Fatalismus-These in Reinholds Interpretation zu Kant Der Formalismus des Wollens besitzt eine intentionale Struktur, da das menschliche Handeln nach Kant nicht dem Streben folgt, sondern einer Stellungnahme («Wie») zu den eigenen Strebungen (Absichten zur Handlung) entspringt. Dieses ungleichgültige «Wie» als Ja/Nein-Stellungnahme zu den eigenen Handlungsmöglichkeiten geschieht nach Kant nicht nach Belieben, da es zugleich um die eigene Selbst-Bezogenheit geht. Der Primat der praktischen Rationalität seit Kant fußt auf der Voraussetzung, dass dieser «Endzweck» als mich betreffender «Gegenstand» ausdrücklich geworden ist. Somit wird die zu machende Bewältigung des Lebens im Ganzen als rationales Ziel des eigenen Wollens anerkannt. Dies steht im direkten Gegensatz zur theoretisch objektivierenden Gewissheit.

This book explores and critically evaluates conceptual and justificatory models related to paternalism in the context of moral philosophy. Paternalistic interventions promoting someone’s good or protecting the person from self-harming actions raise controversial questions from a legal and an ethical perspective.

The tension between the benevolent character of paternalism and its interference with personal autonomy seems to hinder the development of a coherent theory that could specify the «proper» limits of protective state interventions. The theoretical investigation is complemented by selected cases from the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights and the Constitutional Court of Hungary.

Der Autor zeigt auf, dass die Idee der Freiheit für Karl Jaspers die Grundlage seines politischen Denkens und seiner politischen Ethik darstellt. Jaspers beschreibt, dass der Mensch aus Freiheit und Verantwortung heraus handeln soll, wobei die Motivatoren dafür Vernunft und Liebe seien. So kann der unbedingten Forderung entsprochen werden. Auch in der Politik soll diese Maxime umgesetzt werden. Dementsprechend ist Ethik in Freiheit die Grundlegung von Jaspers’ politischem Denken.

What are phenomena of contemporary biopolitics in the twenty-first century? Foucault’s theory of biopolitics as neoliberalism is opposed to post-political theories developed by Agamben, Hardt and Negri and as such – more instructive. Because microstrategy of power is not Foucault’s final word on politics, political genealogy opens the space for creative and local critique of biopolitics. And if military interventions, terrorism and wars against terrorism are exemplary phenomena of biopolitics, bellum justum is a contradictio in adjecto.

In response to such biopolitics, the relation between sovereignty and democracy is re-examined and we are entering a time of small revolutions.

Fénelon, der als Urheber der Formel gilt, bestimmt mit seinem ethischen Prinzip der reinen Liebe den theologischen und politischen Diskurs der Frühaufklärung. Seine Philosophie ist beispielhaft für eine Ethik, die als Aufklärung auf die Gesellschaftsentwicklung einwirkt. Hegel ist Vollender und Totengräber der Aufklärung in Einem. In seinem System integriert er die Aufklärung, bringt sie zum Abschluss und überwindet sie zugleich. Doch lebt sie in der nachhegelschen Philosophie wieder auf. Asketen gelten als apollinische Karrieristen, die mit ihrer ständigen Verfügbarkeit den Sozialstaat abschaffen wollen. Der Mensch ist ein Askesewesen, dessen Begierde durch die Sublimierung dionysischer Energie gehemmt wird. De facto ist die heutige Askese eine Art der Verhaltensrevolte gegenüber dem modernen Konsumismus, die auf einer modernen «Ökonomie des Heils» und einer «Ökonomie des Gehorsams» basiert.

The Doctrinal Evolution of Critical Theory The authors trace the essential aspects of the evolution of critical theory from its classics Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno to its leading second- and third generation propagators Jürgen Habermas and Axel Honneth.

They defend the thesis about the «meandering», dialectical character of this evolution.

In their polemic with Habermas, both Honneth and Gernot Böhme (who is close to critical theory) refer to the classics, and specially their mimesis concept. The author of the first part of this book argues in favour of this interpretative approach. The author of the second part adds a confrontation between critical theory, Michel Foucault’s philosophy of power and Arnold Gehlen’s philosophical anthropology.

Versuch einer Reaktualisierung der kritischen Theorie Georg Lukács hat Anfang der zwanziger Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts die damalige Krise und das Krisengefühl nach dem ersten Weltkrieg mit dem Begriff der Verdinglichung zu erfassen versucht. Davon ist die Tradition der kritischen Gesellschaftstheorie ausgegangen.

Dieses Werk hat zwei Ziele: einerseits soll gezeigt werden, dass dieser Begriff heute durch die Subjektivierung ergänzt werden muss, andererseits soll die These untermauert werden, dass diese Ergänzung in Ansätzen schon einige Vertreter der Frankfurter Schule vorgenommen haben.

Ursprung, Exegese und die Beziehung zum theoretischen Bewusstsein Sander Wilkens widmet sich in umfassender Weise dem Sozialbewusstsein, welches die Neuzeit charakterisiert. Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts stehen sich zwei Richtungen diametral gegenüber: der Behaviorismus, der es in seiner Eigenständigkeit leugnet, und das gemeinschaftliche Bewusstsein in der Soziologie. Zentrale Themen des Buches sind u. a. die neuzeitliche Klausel der Vereinzelung als fehlbare Abstraktion; instantane, nicht nur reflexive oder kommunikationsbedingte Teilhabe der Vorstellungen und Gedanken; konzentriertes Bewusstsein als realer Fokus/Herd; die Umkehrbarkeit der Perspektive; das gemeinschaftliche Bewusstsein als Sozialbewusstsein.

Contemporary and Historical Perspectives The last decade has seen renewed interest in political theories of the public sphere, reacting to new challenges posed by globalization, communication technology, and intra- and international conflicts. However, the role of culture and aesthetics in the formation of the public sphere has received insufficient analytical attention. The essays in this volume explore different strategies for enriching the ongoing debates on this issue, ranging from historical case studies to theoretical examinations of cultural interdependencies and the aesthetic potential of literature and art. The contributions implicitly challenge Jürgen Habermas’ assumption that the public discourse about art and literature should be seen as a mere precursor to the emergence of the public sphere in the eighteenth century, which, from his point of view, is best discussed in the terminology of political theory.

Topics range from the French Revolution’s exclusive social metaphors to Herder’s anticipation of virtual publics, from the distortions of public communication to revolutionary potentials of popular taste, and from postcolonial feuilletons to the global bio-political imaginaries evoked by mobile communication.

Sovereignty and Power in the Works of Thomas Hobbes It is unusual to connect Thomas Hobbes’s political philosophy with liberal thought. This study argues that liberal philosophy is indeed indebted to Hobbes: as a modern thinker he was the first to deduce political rights and obligations from self-interest. While we may say today that Hobbes sustains the capacity of government at the expense of democratic institutions, it is equally clear that he invented the idea of political legitimacy in the modern sense. Analyzing the tradition of natural law, the doctrine of social contract, and the sources of moral and political obligation, the study shows how Hobbes’ assumptions help us to understand that there is no liberty without political authority.

«Philosophical Heuristics» aims to translate philosophical issues into meta-philosophical issues examined from a unique perspective.

The analytical and interpretive practice of heuristics seeks to grasp synchronously all the processes leading to the formation of philosophical discourse, its language, form and content. The book takes hermeneutics and pragmatism as a starting point for a multifaceted and systematic examination of philosophical heuresis and promotes a style of philosophising «in the suspense of heuristic reflection», something more than ordinary theoretical self-awareness.

Truth Be Told explains how truth and falsity result from relations that sentences have to the contexts in which they occur and the circumstances at which they are evaluated. It offers a precise conception of truth and a clear diagnosis of the Liar and Grelling paradoxes.

Currently, semantic theory employs generalized quantifiers as the extensions of noun phrases in explanations of the composition of truth-values. Generalized quantifiers are direct descendants of the second-level functions to truth-values that Gottlob Frege considered to be the referents of his unrestricted quantifiers. During the past fifty years, Frege’s original quantifier referents have been revised and generalized with the result that now every noun phrase, of any type, has a generalized quantifier as its extension. This evolution of noun-phrase extensions from Frege’s referents has retained two of the original theory’s flaws. First, generalized quantifiers inherit a troublesome intrusion of predicate extensions. Second, the senses of names and deictic terms are still not identified, with the result that their extensions are not sharply distinguished from their referents. Truth Be Told frees semantic theory from these Fregean flaws.

Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) is widely recognized as one of the greatest scientific thinkers in history. Intriguingly, when offered a place in the Medici court in 1610, he requested the title of «Philosopher and Chief Mathematician.» Reading Nature’s Book: Galileo and the Birth of Modern Philosophy is the first book-length study written with undergraduates in mind that examines the philosophical implications (both theoretical and historical) of Galileo’s scientific discoveries, including many matters that were later taken up by seventeenth- and eighteenth-century philosophers. This close analysis of Galileo’s philosophical insights demonstrates the prominent place his thought should have in the history of early modern philosophy.

A Cosmology of Learning and Loving This book investigates the philosophy of education implicit in the semiotics of Charles Peirce. It is commonly accepted that the acts of learning and teaching imply affection of some sort, and Charles Peirce’s evolutionary semiotics thoroughly explains learning as an act of love. According to Peirce, we evolved to learn and to love; learning from other people has proved to be one of the best ways to carry out our infinite pursuit of truth, since love is the very characteristic of truth. As such, the teacher and the student practise love in their relation with one another.

Grounded within an edusemiotics framework and also exploring the iconic turn in semiotics and recent developments in biosemiotics, this is the first book-length study of Peirce’s contribution to the philosophy of education.

Wittgenstein is not generally thought of as a philosopher of education, yet his views on how we think, learn and teach have the potential to contribute significantly to our contemporary understanding of pedagogy. Wittgenstein himself was a lifelong learner whose method consisted of thinking intensely about a wide range of topics, including not only the philosophy of language, logic and mathematics but also architecture, music, ethics, religion, culture and psychoanalysis. He then shared his observations and conclusions with his students as a way of teaching them how to think and learn for themselves, and his personification of the learner-teacher deeply impressed those who witnessed his pedagogical performances during his ‘lectures’. This study presents a detailed exploration of Wittgenstein’s legacy as an educationalist, now accessible to us through the extensive published collections of his thoughts on the subject.

A Kierkegaardian Perspective In God and Human Freedom: A Kierkegaardian Perspective Tony Kim discusses Søren Kierkegaard’s concept of historical unity between the divine and human without disparaging their absolute distinction. Kim’s central analysis between the relation of God and human freedom in Kierkegaard presents God’s absoluteness as superseding human freedom, intervening at every point of His relation with the world and informing humanity of their existentially passive being. Kim argues Kierkegaard is not a strict voluntarist but deeply acknowledges God’s absoluteness and initiative over and against human life. Moreover, the author’s exploration of unity in Kierkegaard points to the very ethics of who God is, one who loves the world. Ultimately, God manifests that love in Jesus Christ, representing God’s ultimate reconciliation with the world in his humility.

While Spinoza is often interpreted as an early secular or liberal thinker, this book argues that such interpretations neglect the senses of order and authority that are at the heart of Spinoza’s idea of God. For Spinoza, God is an organized and directed totality of all that exists. God is entirely immanent to this totality, to such an extent that all things are fundamentally of God. Appreciating the full extent to which God permeates and orders every aspect of reality, allows the full sense of Spinoza’s theories of tolerance and the social contract to come into view. Rather than assuming that human beings involved in political relationships are independent, autonomous individuals, for Spinoza they are parts of a larger whole subject to distinct natural laws.

Spinoza maintains that such laws manifest themselves equally and identically in the seemingly distinct realms of religion and politics.

In this respect, Spinoza’s theories of religion and biblical interpretation are not properly secular in character but rather blur the standard boundary between the religious and the political as they try to recognize and codify the inviolable laws of nature – or God.

This book paints a flowing picture of the relationship beween life and nature, through the evolution of a word – physiology. Today, it denotes a scientific discipline at the intersection of biology and medicine, signifying the «study of life». Yet, physiology manifests a split personality in the course of history. It came down to us from the ancient Greeks, where it represented the «study of nature», or «natural philosophy» – the precursor of modern-day «science». Physiology originates from an older Greek root, physis – meaning «nature» itself – that stretches far back to the birth of Greek thought. How did this word generate two such disparate meanings? What does this word tell us, historically, about humankind’s grasp of the essence of nature and the essence of life – and the interrelationship between the two?

The author follows an etymological path into the distant past, in writing the biography of the word «physiology». The book delves into linguistic pre-history, in search of the primordially interwoven views of life and nature – and the words that symbolized those views.

It tracks the evolving meaning of those words in Western civilization across time, space, language, and culture.

The author offers a new look at one of the most influential books in the history of philosophy: Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. He presents the Tractatus as expressing the intellectual anxieties of its modernist epoch. The most intriguing but usually unanswered question concerning the Tractatus is why Wittgenstein had to think that only propositions of natural science have meaning. The author reviews the most popular interpretations of the Tractatus and comes to the conclusion that the early Wittgenstein was an ethical subjectivist. With this insight, he solves the tension between Tractarian theses that influenced neopositivism and its mystical part.

Dialectics beyond Dialectics is a study of contemporary French philosophy from Bataille to Derrida. It analyses, on the first level of generalization, the decomposition of Hegelianism understood as philosophy of totality. Many French philosophers of the 20th century deconstruct Hegelian dialectics and harshly criticize the very idea of totality as either dangerous or impossible. The thesis of the book is that, on doing so, they do not really break with dialectics, but transform it. On the second level of generalization, the issue of the book is modernity and the thesis is that transformations of dialectics reveal transformations of modern consciousness which – despite hasty declarations on the end of modernity – still remains ours.

In this book Yoram Lubling and Eric Evans offer a Deweyan reconstruction of our philosophical understanding of well-being. They begin with Dewey’s critique of the «philosophical fallacy» to examine the legitimacy and value of theories of well-being offered by traditional philosophy.

However, such theories fail to provide an authentic account of well-being due to a false understanding of experience as either epistemic or cognitive. Next, using Dewey’s theory of experience, they reconstruct «happiness» as the target for evaluation of well-being. This leads them to reject the traditional view of a private encapsulated self, and to offer in its place a transactionally situated self which is an embodied, enculturated agent. Through their emphasis on the importance of the qualitative aspects of Dewey’s understanding of a situation, the pervasive quality of the situation emerges as the most plausible criterion for the evaluation of well-being. The authors use Dewey’s theories of inquiry, ethics, value and art to establish the naturalistic conditions under which such pervasive quality enters into a situation as either settled or unsettled, in other words, as peace in motion. Consequently, a problematic situation becomes the primary condition under which all inquiry initiates whether it is in the context of science, ethics, values, art or ordinary living.

This history of Russian thought was first published in Polish in 1973 and subsequently appeared 2005 in a revised and expanded publication. The current volume begins with Enlightenment thought and Westernization in Russia in the 17th century and moves to the religious-philosophical renaissance of first decade of the 20th century. This book provides readers with an exhaustive account of relationships between various Russian thinkers with an examination of how those thinkers relate to a number of figures and trends in Western philosophy and in the broader history of ideas.

Cette collection a pour objectif de promouvoir des recherches philosophiques se situant au croisement de l’anthropologie et de la philosophie sociale. L’hypothèse fondamentale est qu’une philosophie sociale soucieuse d’interroger de façon à la fois descriptive et critique les modes contemporains de constitution du lien social ne peut manquer de questionner les présupposés anthropologiques qui sous-tendent son interrogation. Inversement, toute recherche sur les dimensions essentielles de la condition humaine se doit d’interroger la façon dont celles-ci sont chaque fois mises en jeu et recomposée par le contexte social-historique au sein duquel les individus se trouvent. Attentive à la vulnérabilité radicale de la vie individuelle et collective tout autant qu’à sa puissance de création, cette collection vise à faire de l’anthropologie et de la philosophie sociale l’envers et l’endroit d’un même mouvement de recherche portant sur la vie subjective et sa socialité originaire. Dans cette perspective, il s’agit, pour une part, de favoriser la reprise de concepts anthropologiques récents ou provenant de l’épaisseur de l’histoire de façon à les rendre opératoires pour une philosophie sociale questionnant ses propres présupposés anthropologiques. Il s’agit, pour une seconde part, de permettre aux recherches effectuées en anthropologie de questionner leurs présupposés normatifs. Une telle collection désire ainsi promouvoir un espace de réflexion informé par un double mouvement, celui de l’anthropologie vers la philosophie sociale, celui de la philosophie sociale vers l’anthropologie.

Different terms like post-modernity or reflexive modernity indicate not only transformations in social, economic and political structures, but also in manners of thinking, of conceptualising reality.

It includes contributions about the history of phenomenology because phenomenology has its own specific development anchored in the texts of Edmund Husserl, his predecessors and followers, its distinctive themes and problems set within the frame of the philosophical and scientific discussions of their period. The yearbook is open to inquiries about the interpretation of phenomenology and to different approaches towards understanding phenomenological research, its systematic and methodological insights and its possible contributions to contemporary discussions both about pure philosophy and within the context of more interdisciplinary research. It is also open to broader discussions with other philosophical schools of thought.
