FROM THE EDITOR Well after a very long summer and some teething issues we are back! We seem to have started to lose the villagers intervention this needs to be brought back to keep this magazine alive. We need many contributions from you all be it news gossip puzzles activities events ANYTHING of interest. This is supposed to be a connection to the outside for many of the local residents that cannot get out and about & for those whom can. Many of you have contacted me to see where the magazine is and to ask why it’s not been produced but without the important inclusion by you all there is no magazine to produce. Let’s get back to the time of pulling together and fill this magazine with lots of articles to show the outside world who we are and what we do. Please send all items to me at: peterdownton@btconnect.com

VILLAGE AGENT From your Village Agent Andrea de Berker I have been asked to let you know about WISH which is a free Somerset wide fuel poverty Project helping people resolve their energy issues set up in 2006. Over the next three years, WISH will maintain the fuel poverty advice service across Somerset, identifying and supporting householders who live in cold, damp homes or who struggle to pay their energy bills. Many properties in Somerset are off the gas grid and rely on more expensive forms of heating, such as electricity and oil. WISH will be offering advice on how to manage your energy use and reduce your fuel bills, as well as letting you know about any available grants for insulation or heating system improvements. WISH may also be able to help eligible villagers apply for the Warm Homes Discount Scheme which could give you £140.00 towards your winter fuel bill, and the priority services register which is a free service from their fuel suppliers enabling them to have access to a variety of services, such as having their meter moved free of charge to make it easier to access, or be provided with alternative facilities for cooking and heating if their energy supply is interrupted. In addition to this, WISH Caseworkers can offer home visits to deliver bespoke energy advice, this may include helping people understand their heating controls, for example setting their night storage heaters, timers and thermostats. If you who would benefit from a short talk with a friendly advisor, or a home visit to talk about any of these issues, Please contact CSE's Home Energy Team free on: 0800 082 2234 or email: wish@cse.org.uk . I have also been contacted by a villager in Marston Magna following the article about unsolicited calls who told me that on advice from the consumer financial pages of The Daily Telegraph, he invested in a “True Call” device (www.truecallcontrol.co.uk) which enables unwanted calls to be handled (usually) without you even knowing they have arrived!! Sadly the device costs around £100, and you do need to have some computer literacy to turn unwanted numbers into a “Zap list” which then ensures you are never troubled by that number again. However, he tells me he is happy to say this was a really good use of £100, to stop the incessant (and ever increasing) nuisance calls. If you would like to know more about this or the WISH project or if I can help in any other way, please do not hesitate to contact me adeberkerva@somersetrcc.org.uk or 07852 961839

Gill and I have decided to stand down as Coordinator and secretary after 10 years. Therefore we are looking for someone to take over. Unwanted phone calls are becoming almost part of everyday life – don’t get involved just put the phone down. There unfortunately been a burglary in the village and we can only hope that the culprit will be found out and the items recovered as quickly as possible, rural crime is up 9% this is because criminals are now seeking easier pickings away from the more populated and better policed areas. It behoves us all to be extra vigilant and report any suspicious activities at once and not a day later and to do all we can to safeguard our property. The nights will soon be darker and longer – ideal cover for those not wanting to be seen. With the start of the winter and oil tanks being topped up, its worthwhile checking on their security – make it as difficult as possible for any potential thief. It’s worth noting that we have two defibrillators in the village. One at Weston Bampfylde and one at Hazlegrove Services – both available 24hrs. Don’t be afraid of using them as the machine will talk you through the whole procedure. Please make a note of the “Christmas Get Together” on Friday 5th December in the Village Hall Bill Westcott

Queen Camel Tuesday Group September 2014 Meeting Well, we are all back and refreshed from our summer break and the chat was about the lovely outing that we had to Buckfast Abbey in July. The first part of the meeting was business matters and we were told of the sad loss of two of our long standing members, Audrey Clew and Elsie Walker. They had both been members of this group, from its previous incarnation as the Queen Camel WI and had stayed with us when we re-formed as the Tuesday Group. They will both be sadly missed. Business, coffee and chat over, we settled down to listen to the speaker for the day, Robin Miller, who told us about 'Laughter the best Medicine.' He is a retired pilot who has a variety of talks ranging over many subjects but apparently, none of them were very humorous, so he had set about creating a talk that was more fun! Boy did he succeed! Rarely have I seen fifty ladies, who come from a variety of backgrounds and are a range of ages, unite in 45 minutes of non-stop laughter. It wasn't that he was just a good comedian, which he was, or that the jokes covered all tastes, which they did, but rather, the mix of verbal and visual humour with the fascinating and funny slideshow, as well as his timing. Priceless!! Next month, Rev Andrew Evans is giving us a talk entitled 'Cassocks and Cowpats.' That sounds like fun too! The Tuesday Group meets in the Queen Camel Memorial Hall on the first Tuesday of each month, except August, at 10.00am. If you want any more information about our activities, please call Pat Champion on 01963 32264 or Marion Chapman on 01963 220741.

Ms Wendy Evans As you will now know we have at last got our Jubilee stone installed. There have been a few queries as to why it was placed there but we were given very little leeway by Highways and that was the only place that met their criteria and which didn’t have any services running underground. As it was there was a further delay of approximately six months whilst Highways were granting a license to place an object on the highway and our thanks go to Mike Lewis and the Western Gazette who were instrumental in getting the £500 fee waived. The date of the next Parish Council meeting will be Monday, 6th October 2014. Karen Bourke Clerk to Sparkford Parish Council sparkford.clerk@gmail.com 01963 440112 14
Thoughts for a Sparkford War Memorial As we commemorate the Centenary of the First World War some members of the Village have proposed that we consider erecting a memorial to the 5 members of our Community who gave their lives during the conflict. Currently the only memorial to them is a stain glass window in the chapel within the church. If the members of the Community believe that this is a worthwhile cause and if the various village associations are in support then please let the Parish Council or a member of the church know so that we can set up a small fund raising committee to take the task forward. One villager has already had thoughts about a potential location if we go ahead. Church Modernisation The Parochial Church Council have been considering for some time changes to the future use of the church and the need to open up the interior to become more friendly to the church users. There have been numerous occasions in the past when there have been baptisms, weddings and funerals when visitors come from afar and attended such events when there have been requests for toilet facilities and we have had to rely on the hospitality of local residents – provided that they were at home when the requests were made. This is a situation in the 21st Century that needs to be changed. What is being proposed is that a small working group is set up comprising both regular church members and general members of the Parish with an interest to look at how we can improve the facilities that the church offers. The basic premise is the establishment of both a toilet and some form of kitchenette. We have discussed some ideas with our church architect, who is supportive, but before formally engaging him we would like to discuss with the community how we could make better use of the south side of the church to improve the usability of the building. If you are interested in assisting in this potential project then please contact either of the Church Wardens: Ted Marsh (440634) or Andy Voysey (441010)

Bishop’s Message – October 2014
‘It rained and rained and rained and rained and….’ I don’t know what you did on Bank Holiday Monday, but I was taking part in the Annual Raft Race in Wells. And my word did it rain. It was so wet you couldn’t tell who had fallen off their raft into the moat and who simply spectators were. It was such a shame, as so much work had gone into organising it. I felt particularly sad for the stallholders, most of whom were volunteers, who had come to raise money and support for various local charities. As the rain poured down they were forced to seek shelter under trees and gazebos. There were lots of good causes represented, with a wide range of charities all of which do a fantastic job in different ways. It made me realise again just how fortunate we are in this country to have so many charities which together provide vital support, advice, care or assistance to millions of people each week. Most of that amazing work would not happen without volunteers playing their part and giving their time. The same is true in the church. We are so richly blessed with dedicated people who give so generously of their time, maintaining our churches and ensuring that they are open and welcoming; overseeing church finances and safeguarding; serving on committees or as a school governor; working with children and young people; praying; taking services; preaching; visiting and caring for people. The list is endless. In many of our smaller churches, however, it is not always easy to get people who will serve as churchwardens, treasurers or church officers and sometimes the ‘turn’ on the coffee or flower rota seems to come round somewhat too often. So let me use this article to encourage everyone to ask the question: ‘is there something else that I could do to support my church and to serve play my part in serving my local community?’ If there is I am sure your offer to help will be warmly received. With warm Christian greetings +Peter Bath and Wells

Dear All As I write we are still experiencing a late period of warm sunny and dry days, but we know that the autumn season of mellow fruitfulness will soon be upon us. Some of the trees are already showing signs of dropping their leaves, and the crops are being gathered in from the fields, our gardens and allotments. This activity also leads us onto the annual round of harvest festival services, some followed by a harvest lunch or in some villages by a harvest supper. A wonderful opportunity to give thanks for the bountiful way that God provides for us each year, whether you grow produce to eat or simply a few flowers to beautify your gardens, your window boxes, and your community – all we had to do earlier in the season was to plant a few little, in some cases very little, seeds in the ground, and God did the rest. Isn’t he amazing! Some of those seeds look so insignificant, so similar to one another, but inside each one is all the knowledge of what plant, what variety, what colour, etc., that it needs to grow and develop into a full sized plant – of whatever the packet said that it would be! Remember back to the earlier part of this year – when so much of this county was under many inches, if not feet, of water. When our gardens were more like mud baths, much too wet to get on and dig, but now it all seems like a bad dream. We experienced a lovely June and July, the ground dried up, the crops and all the plants grew and grew, and we even began to wish for some rain! What an amazing climate we have here in Somerset. Our allotment in Castle Cary has produced and continues to produce some really good vegetables. The potatoes and onions are stored away in the dry, the peas and broad beans have been frozen, as have the gooseberries and blackcurrants, the runner beans and French beans are still being picked and enjoyed, the beetroot and carrots are lovely. (Have you tried chocolate and beetroot brownies – they are great!) We dug the first parsnip up the other day (and I know the purist will say that it’s too early – we haven’t had the first frost) but it was a test to see what size they were. Two foot long! Wow! So certainly bodes well for when we dig the rest. With best wishes for a fruitful autumn harvest, giving thanks to God for all that he has provided for us to enjoy. Rosemary Rymer PS If anyone wants recipe for the brownies e-mail me on rosemary@stbr.co.uk. 19
