I would like to send thanks to Cara Nathan from Wolfester Terrace for taking up the role of distributor for the local area, looking at the long term weather views let’s hope you have an umbrella. Thanks to the continued work to all of you who took the time to contact us with items to be included. We are always on the look for News, Events, Gossip Jokes in fact anything (within reason) that can be included in the magazine. It has been discussed recently to perhaps change the amount of times the magazine is produced in a bid to bring down the time & costs involved in the production of it. We would like to hear from all readers their opinion on whether we keep it as every month or change to bi-monthly. Please drop me a message to cast your vote. Everyone who contacts me will have their opinions listened to Please send all items to me at: peterdownton@btconnect.com or to my home address shown on back of magazine.
Tony "the Fridge" was awarded a Pride of Britain Award for his fundraising and we were honoured to accommodate him on one of his fundraising runs a year ago. Our chickens laid a huge egg the morning he arrived so we gave him this egg and a dozen more to help him on his journey! Thanks to Long Hazel Caravan Site For This 2

3rd Sparkford Scout Group Latest from 3rd Sparkford Beavers, Cubs and Scouts Happy campers! Our local beavers, cubs and scouts have had a fantastic summer and start to term, with two exciting camps, and the chance to see the fruits of our fundraising efforts and all your local support, with the first outings of our first items of new kit! All our youngsters worked so hard last term to raise the money for new shelters so we could sleep out and learn to cook independently outdoors, but the greatest thanks go to those members of our local communities whose groups and whose individual contributions have made it possible to purchase the first set of items we so badly needed. So this update is really a THANK YOU – for allowing so many young people to experience real outdoor teamwork, and to have a fantastic time on both camps. We have many more planned, and our group is thriving, with youngsters keen to learn new skills and independence. If you would like to get involved or contribute we would love to hear from you – please contact Helen Wooldridge 01963 440801 or helen@cuddledry.com

People who receive a Winter Fuel payment from the government but who feel that they do not need to use it can donate it to the Community Foundation. The money is then passed on as grants to people in Somerset over 60 who are having difficulty meeting their winter fuel costs and who run the risk of becoming very cold. If you would like to donate please contact the Community Foundation direct 01749 344949 info@somersetcf.org.uk. If you would like to apply for a grant as you are finding it hard to meet your winter fuel bills please contact me so that we can discuss making an application for a grant. Please remember that the fire service are very keen to make sure that every home has a working smoke alarm as these are so effective in preventing death by fire. They will visit elderly and sick or disabled people in their homes to install and check smoke alarms. I also have a supply of useful leaflets about fire prevention and services to help so please do contact me if you would like me to refer you on to the Fire Service or would like more information Andrea de Berker adeberkerva@somersetrcc.org.uk or 07852 961839 However, he tells me he is happy to say this was a really good use of ÂŁ100, to stop the incessant (and ever increasing) nuisance calls. Recently someone asked what happened to all the money we make at the barbecues & the Christmas parties. Over the past 10 years we have donated £4945.40 to various charities & have contributed to the 2 defibrillators. The charities have been decided upon by a majority vote of our 10 contact people. We will soon be having a meeting to finalise the details for our Christmas “Get Together“ on the 5th December in the Village Hall at 7:30pm. Please note the date. We will then be deciding on what to do with any surplus money. Should any parishioner have any ideas, please let your contact know and we will vote on it. Rural crime is over 9% up. The obvious reasons being easier pickings in less populated areas with less policing. It underlines the fact that we must be extra vigilant not only with our own possessions but also keep an eye open for any suspicious activities and report them at once, not the next day. The nights are drawing in – ideal for those not wanting to be seen. We still suffer from unwanted phone calls and door bangers all after what is ours! One of the main causes for anxiety and annoyance is the speed & bad manners of those driving through the village. This goes from worse to worse and yet there is no sign of control or improvement. The highways people have even failed to replace the bollard in the high street, which did fractionally slow vehicles down. Please ring me on 01963 440741 if you know of anyone who would be willing to become coordinator for our watch Bill Westcott

Queen Camel Tuesday Group October 2014 Meeting Last month, the situation arose that every speaker finder dreads, the scheduled speaker had to pull out at the last moment. Fortunately, one of our members was able to prevail upon David Andrews, who had spoken to the club on several previous occasions. David produced one of the most poignant and moving talks, that we have ever had, a First World War love story. A bunch of letters, acquired from an antique shop several years ago had set him off on the trail of a soldier, Reg and his sweetheart, Mabel. The touching correspondence covered Reg's enlistment, training and experiences in France during the Great War. Told with tenderness and humour and mixed with posters and songs, the story and it's aftermath, with an unusual twist at the end, left us overwhelmed with emotions rarely felt at a Tuesday Group meeting! Next month, is our AGM and there is no speaker, probably, just as well! The Tuesday Group meets in the Queen Camel Memorial Hall on the first Tuesday of each month, at 10.00am. If you want any more information about our activities, please call Pat Champion on 01963 32264 or Marion Chapman on 01963 220741.

As you will now know we have at last got our Jubilee stone installed. There have been a few queries as to why it was placed there but we were given very little leeway by Highways and that was the only place that met their criteria and which didn’t have any services running underground. As it was there was a further delay of approximately six months whilst Highways were granting a license to place an object on the highway and our thanks go to Mike Lewis and the Western Gazette who were instrumental in getting the £500 fee waived. The Millennium Seat at the Copse has again been vandalised. Could all parishioners who regularly walk that way please keep vigilant and if you see anything report to the police on 101. As you know we have a problem with the gullies being blocked in Church Road. We are hoping that Highways come out soon to clear them. We would be grateful if residents did not sweep leaves off their drives into the road as this just contributes to the problem. The dog waste bin by the electricity substation has vanished. We are ordering a new one for this site. Complaints have been made about dog waste being left on the pathway from the bottom of Green Close to Church Road. Please remember to pick your dog waste up and dispose of it either at home or in the relevant bin. As you all know there have been problems in the production of the Parish Newsletter over the last few months. This is to do with the printing and is entirely out of the hands of the Editor, Peter Downton. Please be aware that Peter edits this important newsletter on an entirely voluntary basis in his own time and without his efforts there would be no newsletter at all. The date of the next Parish Council meeting will be Monday, 3rd November 2014. Karen Bourke Clerk to Sparkford Parish Council sparkford.clerk@gmail.com 01963 440112 15

Bishop’s Message – November 2014
Remembering Jesus now We are in the season of ‘remembering’. On November 1 st and 2nd we celebrate the double feast of All Saints and All Souls with a particular focus on remembering our loved ones who have died. A few days later there is the opportunity, perhaps especially for children, to remember, remember the 5th of November and they will celebrate with bonfires and fireworks, probably not knowing why! Then, a week or so after that, the poppy takes centre stage as we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and given their lives in the service of their country, with a particular poignancy this year as we mark the 100 th anniversary of the beginning of World War 1. But why do we remember? Is it not more important to put the past behind us and move on? Certainly there is a danger that our remembering becomes rather too focussed on the past, and that we become very nostalgic both about people and events and see them, as it were, through rose coloured glasses. But that isn’t the way that people of faith are invited to remember. Each and every week, for those of us who come to church to break bread together, we are invited, in the words of Jesus to ‘do this in remembrance of me’. This is not an invitation to go back in time and try and remember Jesus as he was. Rather it is an invitation to bring our memory of him into the present and in so doing to bring the love, the compassion and the forgiveness that was so much a part of his life into the way we live our lives. In other words, to make all that he meant to his disciples then real for us now. A couple of verses from Lucy Whitmell’s poem, ‘Christ in Flanders’, speak into that reality for me especially in this anniversary year. Now we remember; over here in Flanders – (it isn’t strange to think of You in Flanders) The hideous warfare seems to make things clear. We never thought about You much in England But now that we are far away from England We have no doubts, we know that You are here Though we forgot You – You will not forget us We feel so sure that You will not forget us But stay with us until this dream is past And so we ask for courage, strength, and pardon Especially I think we ask for pardon – And that You’ll stand beside us to the last +Peter Taunton 18
REMEMBERING AND RE-ORDERING FOR SPARKFORD NEWS, NOVEMBER 2014 ‘We are one of the leading wedding venues in the area. Hold your marriage here, in a beautiful building of considerable architectural and historical interest, in a lovely setting. We have been conducting weddings for centuries, so we know how to do it very well. To help you in your preparations for your big day we offer friendly personal service and advice all along the way. (P.S.: apologies - our venue has no toilets, so we advise guests not to drink before arriving.)’ It’s unacceptable in the twenty-first century that a public building, used by hundreds of people for the most special occasions, should not have toilets. It’s also desirable these days that such a building should be adaptable - that it should have areas which can be changed around to be used for catering, for instance, and for events and meetings of different types. But in our times we are also rightly keen on conservation and preserving the quality and the spirit of our ancient places, for all to appreciate and enjoy. And it is with all these factors in mind that the PCC (Parochial Church Council) of St Mary Magdalene, Sparkford, have decided to embark on a project of ‘reordering’ the south side of the church, to include toilet and catering facilities, to modernize and improve the vestry (most readers won’t have seen the vestry but I can assure you it isn’t very impressive just now) and to remodel the WW1 Memorial Chapel. Our churchwardens Ted March and Andy Voysey wrote about this last month. Here, I’d like to underline just one point they raise: our invitation to other local people to join a working party to formulate these plans and move the project forward. The church has been here longer than any of us, and in that sense belongs to all of us - and to future generations of Sparkford people - and it is for their sake as well as ours that we embark on this project. Be assured that whether or not you join the working group, we are keen to hear your suggestions about these improvements, and will keep the village fully informed about developments. If you look back at the history books you’ll see that Sparkford Church has been through many alterations since the thirteenth century when the first rector was appointed. Some significant changes, such as an almost complete rebuild in 1824 (only the tower remains of the earlier building), and some less significant but still notable ones, such as the removal of the stove which used to stand in the center of the aisle to warm congregations on cold winter Sundays. We change with the times, appropriately, with a sense of contemporary people’s needs and aspirations combined with a keen sense of history. Which is why I think it is good that this project will be completed during the four-year First World War centenary commemorations. The present memorial chapel is actually the old entrance porch, slightly modified. A creative and thoughtful redesign of the chapel will help focus the people of Sparkford in our consideration of how we, as Christians, should remember and respond to all wars, past, present and future. This is a theme as raw and real in today’s conflicted world as it ever has been. Revd John Davies 19
