To Anne Tuck for receiving her 30 year award in scouting! Most of that has been spent dedicated to the Sparkford scout group, which would not be operating today without Anne's support since the mid 80's. Anne was presented with the award by the Chief Commissioner of Scouting, Wayne Bulpitt at Huish Woods near Taunton on the 1st of February! Anne created Sparkford's first Beaver unit in the 80's and went on to work in and lead both the cubs and scouts over the last 25 years. Many of the children that have grown up in Sparkford have had guidance and influence in their upbringing from Anne and others involved through the Scout movement. Scout leaders are a voluntary position, where exceptional individuals give up their own free time to help young people develop their skills and provide them with activities that they may not normally experience in a safe environment all around the world. 6

3rd Sparkford Scout Group Were you a Cub or Scout? 1st Sparkford Scouts need your help please! We are appealing to members of our local communities to share with us photos from anyone in the locality who was a cub or scout themselves, in the Sparkford group or elsewhere, to be copied for a display and hopefully a special event for Scout Community Week 2-8 June this year. Please contact Helen Wooldridge on helen@cuddledry.com if you can help. Can we help you? Also we want to help YOU! If you have a community project, large or small, that we could assist with please do let us know. Please contact julialovesbubbles@gmail.com Or call Julia on 07966226916 What we are up to: Scouts are aiming for completion of Global challenge badge by completing fundraising tasks for the Toilet twinning charity. New members from our waiting list are moving up into the group, and we are developing new challenges, planning and preparation for older scout members to potentially move on to Explorers section (at 14yrs old), whilst younger scouts develop their leadership skills. Summer activities are being planned – camps and exciting joint activities with the cubs section. Cubs have been hiking in the local area and celebrating Chinese New Year. We are looking forward to going up to the woods and doing activities outside now spring is not far away. Please call one of our leaders Julia on 07966226916 to discuss your ideas or email helen@cuddledry.com . Thank you.

Anne & Brian Belton would like to say Goodbye and heartfelt thanks to all the many friends we have made in Sparkford over the 15 years that we have lived in Ainstey Drive. We are moving with many regrets leaving such a friendly village and with some trepidation, hoping that our new home in West Sussex will be as welcoming.

We have now achieved our aim of having a defibrillator at each end of the village, one at Hazlegrove Services & one at the old telephone box in Weston Bampfylde. The training session ran by Chris Cox of the Langport Red Cross on the 24 th Jan was a great success and we now have another 20 members of the Parish with a knowledge of CPR & Defibrillator making a total of 36. We hope to run another course later in the year. This year’s Neighbourhood Watch BBQ will be on the 14 th June at Weston Bampfylde Village Hall, Please make a note of the date. You may not think this comes under NHW but without doubt, none of our neighborhoods would be the same today, without the sacrifice of so many in the Great War, subsequent wars & conflicts. Since this is the centenary of the Great War, it seems fitting that we marked it in some way. There cannot be many families who haven’t lost relations in the wars. We could have a walk to neighboring War Memorials – or? If you have any other ideas then please make contact on 01963 440741. Bill Westcott

20 Parish members attend an evening of CPR training & how to use the Defibrillator. Chairman of the Parish Council Justin Crawford receives the 2nd portable defibrillator from Bill Westcott that is to be located in the old phone box in Weston Bampfylde. 8

Queen Camel Tuesday Group January 2014 Meeting The Tuesday Group never fails to surprise me with its most interesting speakers. February's speaker was no exception. Kay Wych is a tour guide at Glastonbury Abbey and she kept us enthralled as she described how she came to get the job, and in the dramatic way she revealed her Tudor period character, Alyce Cleeve. Alyce was a downtrodden kitchen maid, who was unpaid and expected to work all hours with never any time off in the Abbey kitchen. Alyce wore the usual drab dress of the time. A long linen shift dress, a scapular ( a discarded short cloak from one of the monks), a long apron that doubled up as a hand dryer and for wiping one's nose!!!, and a coif; which she described as a nit cap. A strip of linen wound around the coif and a belt with all her valuables completed her outfit. We then met Thomas Cromwell's commissioner. Dressed in period costume too, he and Alyce acted out the dramatic events that occurred at the Abbey when Henry Vlll decided to sack the monasteries. False accusations were made against the Abbott, and a trial followed leading to a most gruesome death and the wanton destruction of the Abbey and its contents. The Tuesday Group meets in the Queen Camel Memorial Hall on the first Tuesday of each month, at 10.00am. If you want any more information about our activities, please call Pat Champion on 01963 32264 or Marion Chapman on 01963 220741.

JUST ONE HOUR PER YEAR ARE YOU ABLE TO JOIN THE CHURCH FLOWER GROUP? Are you interested in keeping our church looking at its best? A number of people, from the village, kindly give an hour or so per year to place flowers in the church. You may not be the world’s best flower arranger but if you can put flowers attractively in a vase then this might be your opportunity to be of service to our community. Perhaps those of you who are new to the village might be interested. Male or female, we look forward to hearing from you. Please Call 01963 440511 for further information. Many thanks, Carol Lock 9

Bishop’s Message – March 2014 Rt Revd Peter Maurice, Bishop of Taunton Are we all in this together? As the credit crunch unfolded in 2009, I remember hearing Robert Peston on the BBC saying that whoever and whatever was to blame for the economic downturn, there was no denying its reality. Excessive lending exercised by some has led to others losing both home and jobs. “So”, wrote Howard Jacobson in the Independent at the time, “who is finally going to say it; that there is such a thing as too much? Excess makes you ill. Your humanity goes after too much money. More importantly, the idea of a society for our mutual benefit goes”, and that appears to be the case. Although the rhetoric of the government has been ‘we are all in this together’, those who rely on credit unions and food banks will tell a rather different story. It is an interesting issue for our reflection as we move into the season we call Lent. Traditionally, it is a time of fasting and prayer, but for many of us, and I include myself, the fasting has become rather tokenistic; Lent lunches are rarely frugal in my experience! This year I have encouraged us to join in a carbon fast for Lent and Jane Tibbs has produced a really sensible practical guide with ideas to try (it was written with children in mind, but this adult has found it equally helpful!) Do contact Jane through the Old Deanery for a copy. I have also been further challenged by the charity ‘Send a Cow’ who are inviting people across the UK a little after Lent to live ‘below the line’ on £1 a day between April 28 th and May 2nd in order to deepen our understanding of the challenges faced by those who live in extreme poverty. I am not one of those who look for the judgement of God when things are difficult, but given the context in which we are now living, perhaps we do have something to say about how we might live differently for the sake of humanity. At the heart of our life as community is the Eucharist. It is always more than a device to nurture our private, individual relationship with God. Indeed, as the couple who met the risen Jesus on the road to Emmaus did not recognise him until they broke bread together, perhaps we will not recognise him unless we break bread with each other until all are satisfied and none are in need. Extravagant God, lavishing your love on our poverty of heart, Inspire us to give without stint, To lose life that we might find it again So that humanity will be filled with the fragrance of your love Through Jesus Christ who offers himself for us. +Peter Taunton 15

The Village Cookbook. Pancake Day - Pancake Recipe Ingredients 225g / 8 oz plain flour or all-purpose flour Pinch salt 2 large, fresh eggs 600ml / 2½ cups milk 2 tsp melted butter plus extra melted butter for cooking Preparation Makes 12 pancakes Sieve the flour into a large baking bowl, add the salt. Make a well in the centre of the flour and add the eggs. Beat well until smooth and lump free. Add half the milk and the 2 tsp of butter, beat well. Add the remaining milk and stir. Leave the batter to rest for 15 minutes. Lightly grease a pancake pan or frying pan with a little melted butter. Heat until very hot and add a ladleful of batter so it evenly and thinly coats the base of the pan. Cook until set and lightly golden. Using a spatula or if you are really brave try tossing the pancake in the air, and cook on the other side for approx. 30 seconds. Slip the pancake from the pan onto a warm plate. Cover the plate with a tea cloth and keep warm. Continue as above until all the batter is used up. To Serve On Pancake Day, pancakes are traditionally eaten sprinkled with sugar and a squeeze of lemon. However, serve as you like with jam, Golden Syrup, honey, chocolate spread; whatever takes your fancy.
