3rd Sparkford Scout Group Latest from 3rd Sparkford Beavers, Cubs and Scouts

Happy campers despite the rain! This month saw the 3rd Sparkford Scout group camping out, and despite the downpours it was an amazing weekend! Parents were invited to camp too as the group undertook setting up camp, creating incredible handy ‘gadgets’ using sticks and string (from gates to bin bag holders, fences to draining boards), hiking, games, cooking over campfires and learning skills for living outdoors. This is an exciting time for the group, who are embarking on a new programme of activities and camps designed to really teach the beavers, cubs and scouts independence and outdoor skills. They have to be organised for kit inspection, and they are learning how to cook for themselves, and really work as a team. The group is also working hard to fundraise for new dining shelters after some of the older equipment was found to be less than watertight! They will be packing bags for customers at Morrison’s on June 1st to raise money, and they would like to thank both Sparkford and Queen Camel Parish Councils and Battens Solicitors for donations. Still a long way to go to hit their target, so contributions or ideas always hugely welcome. Please contact Helen Wooldridge on or 01963 440801. For Community Week 2-8 June we are lining up projects to help out with local buildings and people. We also really want to learn more about Scouting in our area – and for this we are seeking photographs or other information from anyone who was a Scout in this area in the past. Were you or any of your family a Scout near here? Do you have any photos you could share? Please contact Helen Wooldridge via the contact details above if you can help DID YOU KNOW? Sparkford Scout Group man a Yeovil town football club once a month parking at cavity trays opposite the football ground for £1.50. All proceeds go to the scout minibus up keep and running costs. 9

Your watch held a meeting of contacts to finalise the BBQ details. This is on Saturday 14th June at 5pm in the Weston Bampfylde Village Hall. Please book this date in your diary all of you are welcome. Tickets can be obtained from Contacts – see Parish News & posters. It was decide to give £70.00 each to the British Heart Foundation, Air Ambulance, & the Teenage Cancer Fund. There are continued reports of people giving vital personal information to telephone callers purporting to be from the Police or Bank. This has resulted in the loss of thousands of pounds. Do not give anyone your bank or other details over the phone. Theft of Land Rovers & 4x4’s show an increase & shed, garage break in’s. Better weather encourages more people to travel about. Should you see anything suspicious note every detail and report it there & then. Quite often the smallest detail can like a jigsaw complete a bigger picture. Old information is of little use. Don’t forget the BBQ on Saturday 14th June. Bill Westcott

Queen Camel Tuesday Group May 2014 Meeting The Tuesday Group, met in May on a warm sunny morning for a coffee, cake and chat, before being giv en a most interesting talk on 'Somerset Carniv als.' I, for one, thought this would be a talk about noisy, colourful groups of floats, blocking traffic in country towns during summer holidays, but this was far from the case. In fact, John Dando started with the origins of Somerset carniv als in 1605 and talked knowledgably about their dev elopment, through the centuries, to the present day. Unlike other parts of the country, our carniv als are in Nov ember and at night! He showed us some costumes and artefacts relating to Somerset carniv als but mostly, it was just him, keeping us absorbed for 45 minutes. No mean feat! Later in June, we are taking a trip to Glastonbury for the day to hav e a picnic lunch and meet up with Kay W ych, who is a tour guide at Glastonbury Abbey. She was one of our recent speakers and kept us enthralled as 'Alyce Cleev e,' a kitchen maid from the Abbey kitchens. On our Annual trip this year are planning to go to Dartington for Coffee and a spot of 'Retail Therapy' and then on to Buckfastleigh for lunch and a tour of the beautiful Abbey. The Tuesday Group meets in the Queen Camel Memorial Hall on t he first Tuesday of each month, except August, at 10.00am. If you want any more information about our activ ities, please call Pat Champion on 01963 32264 or Marion Chapman on 01963 220741.

In memory of Richard Baker, who sadly passed away Sunday 11th May 2014. Richard was not only a valued member of the team, he was like a part of the family. He was like the father of the team, you didn’t always see eye to eye but you knew that no matter what he would always be there for you. He was someone who could always be relied on, whether it was to talk, listen or just a shoulder to cry on. Richard could make you laugh with his jokes, not always good ones, sometimes you laughed because they were so bad. Our hearts and thoughts go out to his wife, son and daughter in law at this difficult time and he will be greatly missed by all the team, past and present at Hazlegrove Services.

Bishop’s Message – June 2014

Rt Revd Peter Hancock, Bishop of Bath & Wells Dear Friends, As I write this Jane and I are looking forward to moving to the diocese and to the Installation Service in the Cathedral on June 7. We will be sad to leave Hampshire, which has been our home for many years, but are excited about all that lies ahead. We are putting our trust in the Lord and asking him to guide and equip us. My Installation will be Pentecost weekend. Let us use that as an opportunity to join together across the whole diocese to pray that we may all be filled and renewed by the Holy Spirit. The first disciples were more than a little shellshocked when the risen Christ ascended into heaven, but that all changed on the day of Pentecost when the ascended Christ filled his disciples with the gift of the Holy Spirit. On that day the Church grew at a tremendous rate – from 120 to 3,000 believers – and, contrary to popular belief, has not stopped growing since. The Church is the most dynamic organisation which the world has ever seen. The world-wide Christian Church is growing faster today than ever before. It is said there are more Christians alive right now than have ever lived and died throughout the whole of history. In Africa alone the percentage of Christians has risen from 3% to 45% in just a hundred years. Yes, in the West the Church has been in decline for decades, but even here there are signs that this is changing. That is something to get out of bed for in the morning! I addressed you as friends, which might sound a bit presumptuous, but I do look forward to meeting and getting to know many of you over the coming months. With warm Christian greetings +Peter Bath & Wells
