Dear Friends, Dave & I Moved to Sparkford over 27 years ago and we were made very welcome from the first day! Although it is sad to leave the village & especially our wonderful friends and neighbours, we feel the time is right to move to a more manageable house. But as you may know, we still have many ties with Sparkford through friends & of course family, so will probably see quite a lot of you all still. But we would like to thank you all for your kindness in accepting us “immigrants” all those years ago and say “goodbye” and we will miss you all. Much Love, Pat & Dave Rankin,
Sparkford Playing Field Needs You! We need to recruit new Committee members. 3rd Sparkford Scout Group 3rd Sparkford Scouts getting busy! Scouts – It’s all change with 8 older scouts due to move on at Easter, and new younger scouts coming into the group. We have been developing a new set of patrol leaders and assistant patrol leaders. We are busy with plans continuing for Scout community week in June and camp plans developing too. Cubs - continue to work on their creative challenge badge writing poems and rehearsing sketches which will culminate in a performance at the end of term in front of parents. Cubs having been working with parents and grandparents at home on their building projects and going on walks throughout the village making their own map of Sparkford. Beavers - had an amazing sleepover at the village hall, full of song cheer and camping (well tents were erected in the hall!), and we have lots planned for the forthcoming months for our colony of beavers. We are getting fundraising activities underway and working to raise money for some new outdoor shelter tents and equipment so we can get our youngsters learning about cooking over a campfire and other outdoor skills. Donations small or large always hugely welcome, to support this new generation of young beavers, cubs and scouts – Please contact Helen Wooldridge (helen@cuddledry.com) or call 01963 440801 if you can help. For Community Week 2-8 June we are lining up projects to help out with local buildings and people. We also really want to learn more about Scouting in our area – and for this we are seeking photographs or other information from anyone who was a Scout in this area in the past. Were you or any of your family a Scout near here? Do you have any photos you could share? Please contact Helen Wooldridge via the contact details above if you can help DID YOU KNOW? Sparkford Scout Group man a Yeovil town football club once a month parking at cavity trays opposite the football ground ground for £1.50. All proceeds go to the scout minibus up keep and running costs.

It would seem worthwhile to suggest the action we should take when confronted with someone having a heart attack. Firstly dial 999 or get someone else to. Then if the victim is breathing and in a safe place, put them into the recovery position. Not breathing then immediately start CPR and get someone to fetch the defibrillator. Once this arrives open it up and press the green button and it will talk you through what to do. It will not give a shock if it isn`t needed. There is a defibrillator at Hazelgrove Services and in the phone box at Weston Bampfylde. We are hoping to have another training session on CPR & defibrillator later in the year. If you would like to come please ring and put your name down. In the meantime if you go to hhtp://heartsine.com/support/aed-training-videos/ there is a very good video of a defibrillator in use. It is some time since the list of your Neighbourhood watch contacts has been published. This is the latest. We have lost Pat Rankin in Manor Close – any volunteer to take her place? At last Spring seems to have arrived and once again we will be gardening. There are already reports of garden sheds being raided and expensive mowers and tools being stolen. It is well worth checking windows, locks and marking everything with name and post code. There is some interest in our War memorial walk which will probably be in July. Please ring if you would like to come 440741. Last of all please don`t forget to put the date of the NHW BBQ 14 th June in your diaries. Bill Westcott 9

Queen Camel Tuesday Group March 2014 Meeting Our speaker this month was the retired Vet and Author, Malcolm Welshman. He started with amusing tales of life in the colonial bungalow in Nigeria that he lived in as a child with his parents. Watching the recovery of a beloved pet Bush Dog convinced Malcolm as an 8 year old that he wanted to be a vet. Life wasn't always a breeze in Nigeria. One night Malcolm awoke in his mosquito net to strange noises in the dark room. On putting his feet on to the floor he was horrified to feel things rapidly crawling up his legs..... They were soldier ants. Screaming, he ran out of the room, the house boy picked him up and raced him into another room where all the ants were plucked off him, leaving swollen bites in their stead! The ants had eaten all the families’ ducks and bantams. Cans of insecticide got rid of the insects? Their remains filled 5 large cardboard boxes. Stories followed of various animals that he treated and got to know. His first job was in the London Zoo, his first patient? A rhino! Then in a Veterinary Practise in Worthing, he treated parrots that mimicked humans, one specialised in kitchen noises, one parrot had a vocabulary of 800 words. There was the monkey that could undo its cage and swallowed the bolt...twice! the Rottweiler that ate lots of Christmas chocolates with the Christmas stocking. The dogs that mistook the Christmas tree for one in a park, and the cat that wanted to be the angel on top of the tree! Malcolm also told us about the books he has written, which, if his talk is anything to go by, will be well worth reading. The Tuesday Group meets in the Queen Camel Memorial Hall on the first Tuesday of each month, at 10.00am. If you want any more information about our activities, please call Pat Champion on 01963 32264 or Marion Chapman on 01963 220741.

SPARKFORD PARISH COUNCIL REPORT The last Parish Council meeting was held on Monday 3rd March 2014. Two Planning Applications had been received: 1.

2.
14/00843/FUL – Change of use of existing storage building to workshop, erect office and workshop extensions, formation of storage compound and temporary siting of portacabins for office use. Lane at Cary Road, Sparkford.
The following planning decisions, which were approved, have been received: 13/04747/COL – Application for a Lawful Development Certificate for the existing use of land as residential garden and works to form pond. Mr & Mrs Weatherhead, Higher Farmhouse, Higher Farm Lane, Weston Bampfylde BA22 7HT. GRANTED. 13/05076/FUL – Change of use of land for the erection of a pair of single attached garages to serve nearby residential properties. Mr & Mrs Smith, Land rear of Birchwood, High Street, Sparkford BA22 7JQ. GRANTED. As you will probably have read in the Western Gazette we have received permission from the County Council to erect our Jubilee stone. We are just awaiting the granting of the licence and hopefully in the next month this stone will be erected. New noticeboards have been installed on the front wall of the Parish Hall. Anyone wishing information, adverts etc. in them needs to let the Parish Clerk have the poster and she will place them in the noticeboard. As you will have noticed there has been lots of activity on the Old Coal Yard site. Planning for 14 houses has been granted on this site for several years but it has now been purchased by Raglan Housing Association and they are building seven rental houses, six shared ownership houses and one open market house. We are aware that many young people in the village are not able to buy or rent in the private sector but if anyone is interested in this new development they MUST register on the Choice Based Lettings Register at http://www.homeconnections.org.uk/. People who have been on the register the longest will be eligible to rent or part-buy one of these properties but will only be considered if you are on the register. There is also a Housing Fair, being run by South Somerset District Council, which takes place on Monday 28th April at the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil. It takes place from 2pm to 7pm and is open to the public. There will be 30 stands, with Raglan being one, and a variety of other associations, mortgage brokers etc. If you are on the Choice Based Lettings Register you will automatically be invited to attend but I must stress it is open to the public. If you have any queries please contact me and I will try to help. The date of the next Parish Council meeting will be Monday, 7 th April 2014 at 8.00 pm. Bishop’s Message – April 2014
ALTERNATIVE BISHOPS LETTER The greatest story ever told As an April birthday boy, I find this month confusing. One year it’s warm and sunny on my birthday, another year there’s frost in the morning. Nothing in the April calendar seems to be tied down – school holidays, for a start. It’s very disorienting. Somewhere in the Planning Departments of supermarkets and bakeries, they’ve organised extra production runs of hot cross buns and Easter eggs this year to take account of the fact we have a few more weeks to eat them. In my family, ‘It’s a moveable feast.’ was a saying trotted out whenever anything that ought to happen regularly actually got thrown off course. April is a moveable feast month. In some years, Easter has come and gone by the time April arrives. This year, it comes very late. I think this calendrical confusion makes it hard for many of us to make sense of Easter. It’s not like Christmas, when you know jolly well it will be along on 25 December. Yet Easter (and the week before it, the one we call ‘Holy’) ought to be as significant in our lives as Christmas. Not just the eggs, but the sense of hope and a future that are at the heart of the story. ‘Holy Week’ is worth making time to dig into. That tumultuous week in Jerusalem, the show trial and the judicial murder are essential preludes to the shock and awe of the resurrection itself. Why not grab the kitchen calendar (or your electronic diary) and take a look at those key days – Palm Sunday (13th), Maundy Thursday (17th), Good Friday (18th) – and Easter itself (20th)? Your local church is bound to be offering opportunities to enter into “the greatest story ever told”. The dates may change each year, but your opportunity to get immersed in the story is there. You just need to organise yourself to be a part of it! The Revd Preb Stephen Lynas Chaplain and Senior Adviser to the Bishops of Bath & Wells and Taunton
