Autumn - season of mists and mellow fruitfulness (wrote John Keats) ... and falling leaves and garden bonfires, we could add. May we humbly suggest that if you indulge in bonfires, you spare a thought for your neighbours.

FROM YOUR COUNTY COUNCILLOR I was very disappointed in not being able to get the Highways Committee to agree to put a compulsory restriction on the A359 last week. They decided to have a further 12 months voluntary restriction with the Haulage Association, and have promised to contact any firm with lorries (four axles) using this stretch of should be grateful, if you are stuck behind one of these monsters, if you would jot down the name of the firm licence number, if possible, and let me have it to forward to the County Surveyor.

At the time of going to print I have had no more news about the exhibition for the A303 by-pass.

THE INDUCTION

AT MAWNAN

Sparkford, Weston Bampfylde and Sutton Montis were represented by a party of some 36 people who attended the induction of the Rev. Patrick Connor to the living of Mawnan, overlooking the Helford River in Cornwall. Beauty, friendliness and competence are the words which spring to mind as one looks back.on that memorable trip. Beauty of the countryside through which we passed, of the church, the rectory and their surroundings - the church so well cared for, every pew with its kneelers superbly embroidered in needlepoint, the singing of the robed choir and the organ music so harmonious. Friendliness there was in full measure, pressed down and running over, in the welcome we were given, not only by Patrick and Irene, but by their new congregation as well - and by visitors from neighbouring parishes (and what a magnificent spread awaited us on our arrival). Even more impressive was the obviously genuine welcome given during the Induction Service to the new rector by the Bishop of Truro and by neighbouring clergy, including the Roman Catholic Priest and the United Reform Church Minister; by representatives of the congregation and its organisations, and by the secular community as well; real warmth of welcome breaking through and transforming the formalities, so that one did indeed see the Church as a loving family. As for competence, what a lot of careful thought and skilful preparation must have gone before to make the whole evening run smoothly in both its ecclesiastical and its social aspects, but we who were in the bus will not forget the skill with which our driver manoeuvred his wide vehicle through the narrow streets of Falmouth and reversed down a long, narrow, twisting lane.

While we are all sad that Patrick and Irene have left us, yet we cannot but rejoice for them that their lives have fallen in such pleasant places, where they have been welcomed with such open arms, where Patrick may have a fulfilling ministry and where they may both find happiness in their home above the sea.

LETTERS From the Rev. Patrick Connor to Mrs B. Cottier, Church Secretary, Sparkford.

Dear Barbara, We both thank you all very much indeed for the beautiful present of the television set. The choice was perfect, and also a complete surprise. When we look at it we shall think of our happy years at Sparkford, and remember the party on Atugust 16.

WESTON BAMPFYLDE Farewell to Patrick and Irene Connor A farewell party was given for Mr and Mrs Connor after the evening service on August 25th. A painting of Weston Bampfylde Church and a cheque were presented to Mr Connor and a basket of flowers to Mrs Connor. A photograph was taken of all present which was framed and signed by everybody present; this was given to the Connor's on the day of the induction at Mawnan Smith.

The Coffee morning at Mrs E.Clapp's, Little Weston, on August 24th made a profit on £128 for Weston Bampfylde Church funds.

Preliminary notice is given of a Parochial Church Council meeting, Weston Bampfylde hall, on 14th November, 7.30 p.m.

SUTTON MONTIS Mrs George Spencer wishes to thank all those who so kindly contributed to the gold watch presented to her after 40 years of cleaning the brass in Sutton Montis Church; she is delighted with it.

The Sutton Montis Harvest Sale and Supper was held at Sutton Farm on the evening of Monday, 16th September, by kind permission of Mr and Mrs Brian Hainey. The Rev. G.Robinson kindly attended. It was a successful and enjoyable evening and raised over £70 for Church funds, and a donation of £20 is to be made to Verrington Hospital, Wincanton.

PLAYING FIELD ASSOCIATION

Within the next few weeks the Association will be able to start fencing off the Playing Field area. Those who volunteered to help and any others who feel they would like to lend a hand are asked to contact Mr Donald Cluett (North Cadbury 40217) for further information.

AT HOME

Shop for Christmas in your own home. Mrs S. White will shortly have the Webb Ivory Christmas catalogue, which she will be circulating around the village during the next few weeks. All commission on orders taken will be for the Playing Field Fund.

IN BRIEF Some 59 mothers, children and babes in arms enjoyed one of the few fine days in August when they went to Weymouth for the day on the 29th. The outing was arranged by Mrs Totsy Edwards and a very good time was had by all.

And the Evergreen also enjoyed their trip to the New Forest on Friday, 13th September (in spite fo the date). 24 members went and thoroughly appreciated their picnic tea, including Roma Deacon's special cake (see This Month's Recipe).

At the North Cadbury Horticultural Society's Show on September 7th, several Sparkford members were among the awards. In the Vegetable and Flowers Section, Norman Yeateswon many awards, and other places were gained by Chris Longman, Gwenda North, and Vera and Mark Berry. Gwenda North and Betty Yeates were rewarded in the Handicrafts Section, and in the Domestic Science Section awards were won by Betty Yeates, Vera Berry and Chris Longman, who also won the President's Trophy for the most points gained in the Section (but even she had to give way in one class to a certain male member, who shall be nameless!).

The Jumble Sale at Sparkford Parish hall .on September 14th raised £85 for Sparkford Church Funds.

Best wishes and hopes for a speedy return to full health are sent to Mr Bert March, of Green Close, after his operation and stay in hospital.

Miss Nora Abbott, of Green Close, who was formerly Matron of Wincanton Memorial Hospital, died at the end of August. Our deepest sympathy is extended to all her family and friends.

FOR SALE AND WANTED

Paddock Gardens in Sutton Montis will be opening their apple orchards for Pick-your-own activities, principally Cox's Orange Pippins, Bramley, James Grieve, Discovery and Worcester, on Saturdays and Sundays, OCtober 5/6, 12/13, 19/20, from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. All welcome.

THIS MONTH'S

RECIPE

Lemon Cake 4 8 8 2

ozs. Margarine ozs. Caster Sugar ozs. Self-raising flour large eggs '/2 cup milk ,Glated rind of 1 lemon

For the topping:

, /2 cup of granulated sugar Juice of 1 lemon Mix together and leave in a warm place.

Method: Grease and line a 7" or 8" cake tin with greased paper. Cream margarine and sugar together, add the eggs one at a time, and beat well. Fold in the flour and milk alternately. Add the grated lemon rind.

Cook for approximately l' /4 hours at 350°F. When cool enough to handle, turn out on to a cooling rack and spoon the topping over the cake whilst still warm. (Put a plate under the rack to catch any surplus syrup and pour this over the cake.)
