SITE A, fence:

E2V factory, Carholme Road, Lincoln, England demolition of the E2V factory, close to my home, began in 2011 to make way for the construction of 'Oasis', 255 homes, by house­builder Linden Homes. After repeated requests I was granted a one­off opportunity to photograph the preliminary clearance of the site, and subsequently resorted to either trespass or photographing from the perimeter, through the fencing. This series of fence pictures here were all taken on the 150m long western edge, the golf course/common side (see map opposite), between March 2011 and July 2014, with one final supplementary set made just yesterday, (at end of part 3). Initially I would work my way along the palisade and wire fences, inserting the camera lens between the galvanised pales or through the mesh to obtain an unobstructed view, but eventually switched to following the path by the trees to include the fencing.

The trajectory of each set is from north to south or vice versa, photographing eastwards, and alternates between horizontal or vertical camera orientation. Intervals were a set number of paces between frames on each traverse. Whether 2, 5 or 10 paces it is mostly the foreground that changes, particularly so in the earlier pictures. Time wise, it could be months between sets or just hours. Mid­2014, as the transformation from industrial to residential was close to completion ­ and I was about to re­locate ­ the idea of compiling a standalone piece came about. This came to consist of 125 passes, which, once gathered and printed, totalled some 1400 pages, and which is reproduced here in three parts. Pete August 2018
