Welcome to The Petchey Academy We are really looking forward to you joining the academy, and hope you are too! This guide has been created by our current Year 7 students to answer some of the questions you might have about starting your new school.
What do I need to wear? We expect you to be proud of your new uniform and come to school looking smart and clean every day. You will wear your tie and blazer at all times and tuck your shirt in. Compulsory items of uniform: • Petchey Academy blazer • Black trousers OR Petchey Academy skirt • White collared shirt • House tie • Plain black socks (boys) • Plain black long socks or tights (no patterns) (girls) • Petchey backpack or holdall • Shoes must be plain black, with no trimmings or decoration • Coats must be plain and black or a dark colour • Girls who choose to cover their heads may wear a simple, plain black hijab or headscarf. What do I need to bring with me? It’s your responsibility to come to school fully prepared for your lessons so you need to bring the following items with you every day: You will receive your Student Planner and ID card in your first week which you must have with you at all times and keep safe. Stationery and replacement Planners and ID cards can be bought from Student Reception. Your Student Planners are for keeping a record of all your Home Learning and you should get your parents/carers to sign it every day.

What not to bring Mobile phones and any other electronic devices (e.g. iPads) are not allowed in school, not even in your bag. Junk food (e.g. crisps, sweets, biscuits, cakes etc.) and fizzy drinks are not permitted at the academy. You may bring fruit and a bottle of water.
What will my timetable look like? You need to be at school by 8.20am each day to line up with the rest of your year group at 8.30am. Your Tutor will collect the class to accompany you to the classroom for Tutor Time.

You will receive your individual lesson timetable from your Tutor on your first day. There is a map of the academy on the student notice board so you can find your way around.
Lunchtime At lunch time you will sit on a table with 5 other students to share a meal together. Each of you will have a job to do such as collecting the food, serving it or clearing the table. Your Year Lead will explain more about this on Transition Morning in July. We don’t have a self service canteen and everyone eats the same meal which is freshly cooked in our kitchen each day. Our meat is Halal, there is always a vegetarian option and students with allergies or medical intolerances will be catered for. Please ensure your parent or carers communicates any dietary needs to us.
Can I cycle to school? Cycling or walking to school is strongly encouraged as it’s better for your health and the environment. We have bike racks by the main entrance which are locked throughout the day but you must provide your own chain and lock, and always wear a helmet. The academy does not take responsibility for the loss or theft of of bicycles left on site.
How will I know what the school rules are? When you first meet your Tutor, they will take you through the Home Academy Agreement. This is a 3 way commitment in which the academy, your family and you agree to work together to enable you to achieve your very best and enjoy your time at the academy. As a student at The Petchey Academy, you agree to:

• Work hard and take pride in your achievements. • Do your best to achieve your targets. • Attend school every day and arrive on time. • Wear the correct uniform and have the correct equipment (including PE kit). Never bring phones or junk food into the academy. Complete all Home Learning on time and to a high standard. Eat the school lunch (unless your are fasting for religious reasons) and take part in Family Service. Accept and participate in the opportunities given to you by the academy. Attend all parents’ evening (in uniform) with your parents/carers. Take letters and messages home to your parents. Attend any after-school sanctions, if you receive them. Remember the motto of Sir Jack Petchey “If I think I can, I can”.

What happens if I am ill and can’t come to school? If you’re too ill to come to school, your parent/carer must phone 0207 2751546 or email absent@petcheyacademy.org.uk to let us know before 8.15am. Students who achieve 100% attendance each term receive prizes and special reward breakfasts.
What happens if I am unwell in school? If you feel unwell whilst you’re in school you should let your class teacher know or find your Year Lead if it’s at break or lunch time. If necessary, a first aider in the school office will assess you and decide what to do next.
What happens if I need to call home? You can call home during break time, lunch time, or after school from either Student Reception or the main academy reception.
When can I use the toilet? You are not allowed to go to the toilet during lesson time as this disrupts lessons. You should use the toilets in between lessons or at break and lunch time. Students with a genuine medical reason for needing to leave a lesson will be issued with a toilet pass.
What do I do if I have a medical or dental appointment in school time? Please avoid making appointments during school hours. We understand that sometimes this is unavoidable so if you do need to leave school you must bring a note from your parent/carer to the main academy reception, along with a copy of the appointment letter. Parents/carers can also email the information to absent@petcheyacademy.org.uk. Students leaving for an appointment during school time must be collected and it is your responsibility to make sure you are at main reception at the right time.
Who do I speak to if I am worried about anything? You should speak to your Tutor if you have any concerns or worries about anything at all. Your Tutor will be able to support and guide you and they may also refer you to our Student Welfare Manager for additional support if necessary. If you are worried about a particular subject you should speak to your subject teacher at the end of your lesson.
Who are the Year 7 Team? Ms Cummings, will be your Year 7 Lead & Ms Andrews is the Assistant Year Lead. Their role is to look after the wellbeing of the whole of Year 7 and support you throughout you first year at the academy. You’ll see them every morning at line up when they share important notices and news with you, and every week in assembly.
