Heartworms are Parasites that infect dogs Through mosquito bites.
If left untreated, they can cause some serious health issues!
Once diagnosed, we Begin A treatment that lasts about 150 days.
We receive the first injection of immiticide, which kills the adult worms living in and around our hearts, and begin prednisone to control inflammation of the heart.
Throughout the treatment, we must avoid physical activity. This is the day we can get back to normal!
We are kept on a pre-treatment antibiotic called Doxycycline. We also begin monthly heartworm prevention, which kills off any immature worms in our system.
We receive two immiticide injections back to back and begin another round of prednisone.
9 MONTHS LATER
We are retested to ensure treatment worked.
Have you talked to your dog's vet about Heartworm Prevention?
Prevention is usually given monthly in the form of a yummy tablet or treat that is purchased through a vet clinic.
Dogs should begin prevention at 8 weeks of age and continue on it their entire life.
Treatment is included in the adoption of heartworm positive dogs! Our shelter staff can guide you through the process.
