KS4 English Literature Courses We have many one-day immersive revision courses specifically aimed at putting the fun back into Literature while still embedding and reinforcing key concepts. We have days for a wide range of Set Texts, anthology poetry and approaches to unseen poems. We cover all examination boards, so get in touch to see how we can help you. Approaching Unseen Poetry This one-day course provides students with strategies to analyse and write about unseen poetry in examination conditions. It builds learner confidence in an area that many traditionally find challenging. Historically, schools have often side-lined specific approaches to unseen poetry, trusting that students pick up the skills along the way while studying the poetry in their designated anthologies. Research indicates this is now even more the case, given recent increases to the amount of course content. Given the value of the unseen element to an overall grade (up to 20% in some cases), schools have been turning to this booster course as a means of ensuring their students receive optimum academic preparation in a dwindling amount of curriculum time. The PET-Xi dynamic approach will build learner confidence and put the fun back into a curriculum area often wrongly perceived as dry and dull.

“I would just like to say that today has been fantastic! We have never received such helpful advice or resources before, thank you so much!” Beau Williams, The Brit School for Performing Arts & Technology The courses, predominantly focussed on the texts themselves, also provide guidance regarding approaches to different types of examination questions. The courses not only reinforce previous learning and bring the text to life but encourage the personal response that is so highly valued by examination boards. Please call us to find out whether we have a course for your school’s chosen Literature set texts.

“A huge thank you to the whole PET-Xi team. We have been delighted with the service we have received from everyone we have been in contact with.” City Academy, Norwich

KS4 High-5 English Language Courses This tightly structured five-day course has a simple focus on grade improvement. Schools choose either a Paper 1 or Paper 2 focus. Students are guided through effective approaches to every question on the paper and then practise examination technique. They are exposed to many ways of impressing the examiner, managing their time and e nsuring they precisely address the requirements for each individual question. The course begins and ends with a full sitting of an officially sanctioned examination. These are then marked, re-marked and verified by our specifically trained PET-Xi markers, and extensive reports are provided, so that schools are able to demonstrate learner progress clearly and reliably. The following High-5 options are available: AQA Paper 1 Explorations in creative reading and writing. Paper 2 Writers’ viewpoints and perspectives. EDEXCEL Paper 1 Fiction and Imaginative Writing. Paper 2 Non-fiction and Transactional Writing. OCR Component 1 Communicating information and ideas. Component 2 Exploring effects and impact.

WJEC EDUQAS (schools in England) Component 1 20th Century Literature Reading and Creative Prose Writing. Component 2 19th & 21st Century Non-fiction Reading and Transactional/Persuasive Writing. WJEC (schools in Wales) Unit 2 - Description, Narration and Exposition. Unit 3 - Argumentation, Persuasion and Instructional. Our High-5 courses are perfect for delivery at any point during a GCSE course. They provide precise progress markers early in the course and an exceptionally effective boost in the months prior to the terminal examination. Our partner schools have been delighted with their results and we continue to offer a breadth of creativity, expertise and experience that schools can rely on in such educationally uncertain times. We can help to raise confidence amongst your students, reinforce existing learning and translate that confidence into tangible results.

Literacy Alive for KS2 Aimed at Years 3-6, these courses bring the core elements of reading and writing to life in the primary classroom. Learners engage with popular children’s fiction in the company of famous fictional characters. What better way to enthuse, engage and motivate a young learner? We love reading the Harry Potter stories but what if Dumbledore was there to explain how to make your own writing just as exciting? What if Alice and the Mad Hatter could help you use figurative language more skilfully? Wouldn’t it be great to have Fantastic Mr Fox and Cruella de Vil working with you on your punctuation? What about Peter Pan and Captain Hook promoting perfect grammar? Using adverbs probably won’t have learners yawning if they’re being helped and supported by Willy Wonka and Tigger. Each course option is fun, interactive and will enhance and embed the teaching of essential reading and writing skills. Primary teachers are faced with the challenge of presenting and developing these core skills in an engaging way, which isn’t always easy to do given the rather dry nature of the material and the inevitable repetition through practice. PET-Xi courses thrill and excite learners through a carefully balanced mix of active learning, enjoyment and proven pedagogical principles. PET-Xi days are dynamic and memorable, essential features when key learning is fully absorbed and retained. The learning encompasses storytelling, role play, paired and group work as well as

individual study. The course will be led by a PET-Xi English Expert and supported by two favourite fictional characters who, incidentally, are also experts in motivational training and small group support. The menu option approach allows teachers to precisely select skills with which their learners need extra support. Each half day course lasts for 2 to 2½ hours, depending on the format of your school day. Selecting two courses is a perfect fit for any entire school day.

“I didn’t really get apostrophes, so I used to put them everywhere. But now I just remember what Dumbledore told me and how he argued with Voldemort about how important they are.”

Menu Options All course options contain student material based on course characters. For example, punctuation exercises are based around extracts from Fantastic Mr Fox and 101 Dalmatians and all exemplifications of figurative language are taken from Harry Potter. All courses contain film clip extracts of the characters to support the classroom work. Many of the exercises take the form of classroom games. Children are learning at the same time they think they are playing. Option A - Recognising and using figurative language with Harry Potter and Dumbledore • Distinguishing factual description from figurative description • Similes – identification, creation and usage • Metaphors – identification, creation and usage • Personification – identification, creation and usage Option B - Grammar: word classes (1) with Alice and the Mad Hatter • Nouns • Verbs • Adjectives • Adverbs Option C - Grammar: word classes (2) with Peter Pan and Captain Hook • Interjections • Conjunctions • Pronouns Option D - Punctuating properly and for effect with Fantastic Mr Fox and Cruella de Vil • Sentences and capital letters • Apostrophes • Direct speech

Option E - Reading skills: comprehension, inference and deduction with Where’s Wally and the Grand High Witch • Search and locate, skim and scan • Inferences and suggestions • Clues in texts Option F - Exciting writing with Tigger and Willy Wonka • Awesome adjectives, vivid verbs, amazing adverbs • Avoiding bland language • Planning Option G - Advanced punctuation with Woody and Buzz Lightyear • Hyphens, brackets, dashes • Comma use • Colons and semi-colons Option H - Enjoying poetry with Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf • Reading aloud and performance • Rhythm, rhyme and syllable games • Content activities

MISSING A N I N V E S T I G AT I O N S C E N A R I O

A ONE-DAY COURSE FOR MORE ABLE KS3 LEARNERS

KS3 More Able learners Missing - An Investigation Scenario This ground-breaking, one-day course helps learners understand they don’t always need to have all the answers all the time, by experiencing the benefits of working with others to reach a conclusion. We do this by introducing a way of working intended to build resilience and emotional intelligence and enrich and strengthen learning relationships in the classroom environment. Our dynamic approach and unique resources give learners freedom to think for themselves in a creative context. During the course, learners work in teams to discover the where-abouts of a missing teenager. Information is provided in film story format, using witness statements, local maps, timetables, interviews, and a range of other clues. The teams then learn how to develop hypotheses, rationalise their decisions and to discard unproductive lines of enquiry. Once they’ve reached agreement, their conclusions are finalised, and their theories are presented for judgement. We know that more able students have the necessary academic strengths to gain successful grades but often lack confidence and the soft skills required for everyday life and progression to top universities. ‘Missing: An Investigation Scenario’ is a course designed to enable learners to develop and exhibit skills outside the purely academic skill set. These include alternative traits and skills like taking initiative, demonstrating a positive and flexible attitude, decision-making, problemsolving, time management, working under time pressures and being pro-active.

The day is filled with activities that develop decision-making skills, confidence, and initiative. • Logical thinking tasks / puzzles • Team-working to create theories and formulate hypotheses • Analysing and evaluating different information formats (visual, written, numerical, graphic) • Responding to events in a real-time scenario • Producing, practising, and delivering presentations • Consolidating ideas in written reports “The Missing programme delivered by PET-Xi provided the perfect platform for our students to work collaboratively, make informed decisions, rationalise their thinking, solve problems using new strategies, communicate effectively using a variety of mediums, practice time-management skills and work under pressure. “By challenging the students, removing their comfort zone and providing a context outside the realms of the academy’s curriculum, they’ve developed greater awareness of others and improved self-confidence. “Students were highly complementary of the programme and the PET-Xi team, they were totally engaged from the start, competitively embracing every challenge and could identify how they had benefited from the day. I would highly recommend this programme.” Helen Taylor, Brunts Academy

KS4 High-5 Mathematics Programmes This tightly structured five-day revision programme has a simple focus on grade improvement. Learners are guided through a comprehensive coverage of the syllabus, building up a personalised revision folder. Topic focussed building blocks are covered and then embedded within more complex problem scenarios, whilst also practising examination technique. Daily ‘Confidence Tests’ are also completed to measure daily progress. The High-5 programme begins and ends with a full sitting of an officially sanctioned examination. These are then marked, re-marked and verified by our specifically trained PET-Xi markers and extensive reports provided, so that schools can demonstrate learner progress clearly and reliably. Our High-5 programmes are perfect for delivery at any point during a GCSE timetable. They provide precise progress markers earlier in the programme and an exceptionally effective boost in the months prior to the final examination. Our partner schools have been delighted with their results and we continue to offer a breadth of creativity, expertise and experience that schools can rely on in such educationally uncertain times. We can help to raise confidence amongst your learners, reinforce existing learning and translate that confidence into tangible results.

“With school funding very lean at the moment I have to know that I’m getting the best possible value for money. We are all absolutely clear that the PET- Xi support is very valuable.” John Syznal an Executive Principal, The Maltings Academy in Essex

“It was great how the session was organised. Essentially the PET-Xi team broke down the role of the teacher into that of subject expert, motivator and supporter. There was lots of content and the children really learned a lot. There was a buzz around the entire school.” Catherine Cookson, Deputy Head Teacher, St Anne’s Catholic Primary in Birkenhead

“I can’t say for definite what made the difference to results, but PET-Xi with their enthusiasm, dynamism and energy has certainly promoted a positive approach and outcomes to the subject.” Kelvin Hall School
