P E T-X i C A S E S T U DY Sultana Akter, aged 26, moved to the UK from Bangladesh in January 2020 and did not know how to apply for jobs or which skills were required for certain roles. After searching for free courses online to help support her in finding a position, she came across PET-Xi and got in touch to find out more.
Support provided by PET-Xi Sultana was referred to PET-Xi Employment Coach Charmaine Jones who signed her up to the Step-Up Programme to help her find employment and conducted a detailed Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) assessment. As well as helping Sultana understand the job application process and develop her CV, Charmaine also arranged for Sultana to take part in several courses being delivered by PET-Xi. Sultana was able to gain Level 2 qualifications in customer services, health and social care and IT user skills. Charmaine said: “Sultana was really keen to find employment but her limited knowledge of the application process meant that she struggled. “When the lockdown was implemented she found herself frustrated and wanted to do something to keep busy and also develop her skills. “She was really motivated by the courses and was eager to take part in everything we had to offer which was fantastic. “She was a lovely person to work with and the fact that she has o vercome a number of barriers to find a position is a real achievement.”
Outcomes The skills Sultana developed through PET-Xi enabled her to secure a position in online marketing and customer services. She has also recommended PET-Xi to a number of friends who have gone on to take part in courses with the training provider.

Together we work as one Sultana was supported through the Step-Up Programme, a West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) funded project run by award-winning national training provider PET-Xi aimed at helping Coventry residents who are facing barriers move back into employment. The vocational courses that Sultana accessed were funded by the WMCA’s Adult Education Budget, which aims to equip adults for work, up-skill current employers and fund specialist training.
