P E T-X i C A S E S T U DY Carl Hole-Maloney, 48, had moved from Tamworth to Coventry and was looking for a change in career upon arriving in the city. He spoke with a careers adviser at Coventry’s jobcentre and said he was potentially interested in a career within the hospitality industry.
CARL’S STORY
Carl was told about PET-Xi’s ten-day Step into Hospitality course which would give him the experience he needed to get a job in the sector.
Support provided by PET-Xi The Step into Hospitality course gave Carl a good mix of classroom and on-the-job learning. Carl was taught a range of key skills for the hospitality sector on the course including health and safety in the workplace, fire safety manual handling, first aid, conflict management, waste management, equality and diversity training, and the ‘Challenge 25’ policy. He also gained practical experience working in the Metropolis Bar and Restaurant in Coventry, where he was taught the basics of b ar-work, coffee making, front-of-house and kitchen work. Carl passed the course after the ten days, and continued to be supported by PET-Xi through advice on developing his CV and securing interview opportunities. Sanjay Kambo, Professional Programmes Trainer at PET-Xi, said: “Carl was really enthusiastic about wanting to learn the skills needed to get into the hospitality industry, and he was a great student as a result. “He picked up the main concepts easily, and his time learning the b asics at Metropolis was incredibly valuable for his personal development and his attractiveness to future employers.

“Following the course, we continued to encourage Carl and pointed him in the right direction to find potential opportunities for employment. I’m delighted to say Carl is now in work and earning a steady income.”
Outcomes With Carl’s recent experience at Metropolis and the knowledge gained from the course, he secured an interview at the Marriott Hotel in Meriden for a kitchen porter role. The hotel was impressed with Carl’s skills and his interview technique, and offered Carl the job. Carl is now working five days a week from at the hotel, and he hopes to use the job to further develop his hospitality career. He said: “I’m so pleased I got the job, due to a bit of a miscommunication I actually arrived to my interview an hour early, but I stuck around and didn’t leave immediately. “During the interview the chef was impressed I’d stuck around, and felt my time at Metropolis was valuable experience. “I’m getting used to the early starts again but I’ve really been enjoying the job. And with the many events I see happening at the Marriott, I’m hoping I can get into event managing at some point in my career. “I’m very grateful to Sanjay and the rest of the team at PET-Xi – they encouraged me from day one and opened up doors for me that I wouldn’t have been able to take advantage of by myself. “This is just the start of my career in hospitality and I’m excited to see where it takes me.”
