Time for new change

DHUHA HAIDER

This year, in Key Club, all the officers and Plano East as a whole would like to implement more changes to make Key Club a better experience for everyone, members and officers! Since this year is everyone’s first year back from the pandemic, we want to ensure that we start where we left off and continue to make Key Club as fun and collaborative as it can be with the addition of new changes! One of the ways Key Club will become more collaborative is by increasing communication with members. . The officers will try to the best of their ability to continue to update and post

on the key club website and google classroom so that members stay informed and updated on everything! Now, with a year of meetings during the pandemic, most advertisements relied on social media and we will continue to do so but also we will try to advertise in person and using flyers as well! We have a great marketing team and they are working to keep socials and flyers up and interesting! Another change we will be making is providing more service opportunities catered to our members and their interests. In Key Club, we try to promote the idea that volunteering is not only an acitivity

to gain hours but to gain experience, to learn new things, and more! It can be a way to meet new people and gain new interests therefore anyone should be able to find something of relative interest. Key club will also try to provide more snacks and more collaborative projects at meetings! Because of the situation last year, collaborative projects were not as emphasized as they were before because it is hard to do online. Now, we will continue to implement more group projects for members to get to know each other and to have fun!

Social media is a significant form of communication within the PESH Key Club as it serves as a means of efficiently connecting and relaying information to members. During COVID-19, social media, such as Instagram, Google Classroom, and Remind, was used to ask members ideas regarding service opportunities and projects they had/ were currently involved in. Additionally, social media was used to directly ask members about interesting facts about themselves such as places they would enjoy visiting or their favorite type of Halloween candy. Not only do these questions on social media aid in increasing member engagement, our Key Club family is strengthened through this sharing of information in such simple ways. Specifically, pertaining to the current school year, our use of social media has not slowed down despite being able to communicate in person. Recently, we have utilized Remind to quickly AMA ABEYNAYAKE

relay messages regarding meeting changes such as a change in the day or room number. Because our member participation has greatly increased this year, verbally getting these messages across can be extremely difficult. Therefore, through a simple message sent through social media, our officer team is able to transfer messages instantly to over a hundred members greatly enhancing our communication as a club. We hope to implement more uses of social media in the future, such as polls, in order to incorporate technology to further promote our club’s engagement.

Member of the Month As a transfer from the feeder school McMillen, I have only been part of Plano East Kiwanis for two odd years. However, I have had great experiences in that time. Not only is the leadership team welcoming during meetings, but they also sponsor an incredible group of thoughtful students to do what they do best: serving the community. Even before I joined Key Club, I was allowed to participate in their service projects, like volunteering at the Plano Balloon Festival. Although I wasn’t an official member yet, the Plano East Kiwanis back then still welcomed me with open arms and treated me like family. One of Key Club’s mission statements is “We promote caring as a way of life,” and that cannot be more true. At service events, Key Club volunteers have always greeted incoming crowds with smiles. Even for smaller service projects, you can tell they devote considerable effort. I think that is what makes Kiwanians so great: not only do we look out for each other, but we also value each other’s contributions.

Another one of the Club’s mission statements is encouraging leadership through serving others. Personally, as a subteam leader of a 501c3 charity (JL Sports/Nonprofit Association) that I am proud to be a part of, I resonate with this statement. Key Club has made me realize that service ties in with leadership, going hand in hand. Serving the DFW metroplex through JL has allowed me credible hours for Key Club and an opportunity to influence others in good ways: something advocated by Kiwanis. And so, Key Club, to me, is not just another organization that I treat as a fun extracurricular. Instead, it is a family of like-minded individuals who share the same passionate goal of helping others.
