EDITOR'S NOTE The shivering chills of Halloween are creeping closer and closer, but what have Plano East Key Clubbers been doing?
Amidst the pandemic, a girl stares up at the sky. . . in awe of the twinkling stars and moon high up and bright. Oftentimes, I find myself pondering what my world could look like if I had done something different. I am seventy-three percent sure that at least one person reading this has felt the same way. But one thing that will not change for the next few years to come is the presence of Key Club as a family. I hold immense gratitude to this club and look forward to creating a second family this year!

"WELCOME EVERYONE! A link will be sent in the Zoom chat soon for you guys to sign in!” exclaimed Navya, the president of Plano East Key Club. The Zoom meeting room was bustling with energy and life as each student trickled in one by one. Before seeing the bright faces of Plano East Key Club’s members, the officer team and sponsor prepared a few moments before to make sure the Google slides were ready. Once the president officially began the meeting, members were told that all monthly Zoom meeting links will be sent

out through Remind and Google Classroom. Also, the housekeeping of dues and bylaws were explained; to turn in the dues, students needed to answer a poll to decide how dues would be turned in and after that, each student would have until October 9th to turn in their fifteendollar dues. As for bylaws, an assignment was posted in Google Classroom and each member was to turn in the form by October 9th. Once these logistics are announced, the new twelve-hour requirement is presented
as well as four wonderful virtual service opportunities for members to participate in. Moreover, the required service activity of sending a virtual note of hope through March of Dimes was shared and Navya informed members that they had until October 16th (the next monthly meeting) to complete that service hour. Other service opportunities such as LearnCast, LibriVox, and Smithsonian were mentioned to provide a sufficient amount of hours for
members to complete this fall semester. The member of the month was introduced as a new award that Key Club members could receive. The selection is based on the number of hours of service completed in the past month and general engagement in meetings. Finally, our delightful Plano Kiwanis, Gary Cook and Jim Hesson, were introduced near the conclusion of the meeting.

CONNECTIONS What should Key Clubbers look forward to this year?

The primary goal of the Key Club is to build character through service and leadership. Plano East Key Club embraces this idea by bringing people together for the same end goal: aiding others through service. Though there have been many battles fought in the past year,
Key Club's founding principle still shines through. Approximately fifty people attended the very first informational club meeting and the officer team hopes to see that number only increase from here on out.
Though apart, members can still build friendships and in the long run, their character as a person. There are many accounts when Plano East Key Clubbers have sparked friendship by volunteering at events such as the annual Plano Balloon Festival and Salvation’s Army Red Kettle Campaign. Volunteer events such as these not only bring Plano East students together but also Plano Senior and Plano West students. All of that being said, one of the most valuable aspects of participating in Key Club is building those life-long connections with people, which is more important now than ever. And this is what I hope to bring to new Key Club members and later generations as well. To amplify the connections we can make, the Plano East Key Club officer team is planning a big service project to have members contribute to a life-changing experience. Furthermore, the Plano Kiwanis will supply monetary resources for Plano East Key Clubbers to use towards the service project; this resource was provided as a result of having so many Plano East students volunteer at the 2019 Plano Balloon Festival. There are infinite ways Key Clubbers can help build stronger bonds amid the crisis right now and service is the key. One can brighten a person’s day by sending a quick note or can give a person in need of service an extra helping hand.
B U I L D B O N D S By passing on and spreading the duty of service to our members, we can achieve greater things for the betterment of the world and even the members themselves. And as Plano East Key Club ventures through the new virtual setting during the year 2020-2021, the hope that members can learn and lead from this experience is at its peak.

Aisha Polani
As each second ticked by, the young girl climbed up each stair-step only to be stopped by another step. This occurrence continued, but as she continued the process, each step was higher. Sometimes she did not know how she would be able to climb another step to reach her fate until Key Club lent her a helping hand. Meet Aisha Polani, a young adult weaving her way through the ins and outs of life. She did not know what her calling in life was until Key Club let her discover her true passions through volunteering countless hours for different services provided by the club. When Aisha joined Key Club, she “didn’t have any big passions” but as her involvement increased, she “realized [her]

This spirited commitment has pushed her to officially decide her major for college; she is currently a senior in high-school. Aisha “love[s] spending [her] Saturday mornings doing something that’s going to be bigger than [her]self,” and without the guiding principles of character development in Plano East Key Club, she would not have found that fascination as easily.

As this year’s Plano East Key Club’s vice president and last year’s secretary, Aisha has been able to garner immense amounts of leadership skills. “I had to learn how to cooperate and listen to others but still be able to express my opinion while doing what’s best for the club,” she says. Communication is key when it comes to running any sort of organization, and as Aisha has successfully navigated through her year as a past secretary in Key Club, she knows how substantial communication is. Furthermore, as this year’s Plano East Key Club’s vice president, she always makes an effort to listen to not only her fellow officers but also the members of the club. Aisha is always willing to broaden her mindset to accommodate others and compromise when it is needed.
Growing as a person, Aisha was able to develop interpersonal skills and her character; however, the Key Club community is what helped her become who she is today. Aisha states “I’ve grown to love the community around me. . . and seeing Navya [Plano East Key Club’s president], Tiffany [Plano East Key Club’s Editor], and I all grow and become closer through Key Club really makes me feel all warm and fuzzy!” She cherishes the interconnectedness of Key Club at her high school and always looks forward to “seeing familiar faces [of the members] at every meeting.” During monthly meetings on each first Friday, Aisha would engage in conversation with the other Plano East Key Clubbers and create a second home for them. FOSTERING A LIFE FOR FOSTER KIDS

Both the Governor’s Project and District Project have to do with supporting foster kids since as many as four hundred thousand children are currently being sheltered in foster homes in the United States of America. As members of society and Key Club International, we are obligated to provide aid for all types of groups of people, especially foster kids. It’s no lie that the COVID-19 pandemic hit everyone hard, from unemployment to remaining socially distant, and unfortunately, to losing loved ones, foster kids need our help more than ever. In the THE KEY POINTS | 14
upcoming months, the Plano East Key Club Officers plan to participate in the Foster Kids Charity monthly snack bag program socially distanced. What this would require is for each Plano East Key Clubber to fill a quart-sized Ziploc bag with a juice box, a soft cereal bar or cracker snack, a fruit snack, an educational material (like a coloring book), and a sweet note of encouragement. These snack bags are designed to provide a supplemental nutrition program for both abused and foster children. Foster Kids Charity began this program in 2014
and still needs volunteers’ monthly help to collect a total of five hundred to one thousand five hundred snack bags. However, because of the growing number of offices of Foster Kids Charity, the foster children need as much as two thousand five hundred snack bags monthly. Additionally, many foster children have progressive problems due to lack of daily meals and a nutritional diet; by producing more snack bags in coordination with Foster Kids Charity, Plano East Key Club will be able to make a difference in foster children’s lives and ultimately contribute to the Governor’s Project as well as the District Project.
When specifically donating to Foster Kids Charity, Key Clubbers contribute to emergency bags, several supplies of diapers, snack bags, the organization’s lease, annual Christmas party, and for a program called the Youth Laptop Program. The Youth Laptop Program provides foster kids with a laptop loaded with software, a backpack, and technical support. Plano East Key Club strives to make the world a better place, and by working with Foster Kid Charity, we can make a difference for foster children:

In addition to producing snack bags, Plano East Key Club will always have the option of gaining donation hours by donating ten dollars for one hour to an organization such as Foster Kids Charity.

For those lingering questions. . .
What are service hour requirements? 12 hours are to be submitted via Google Form this Fall Semester, you can have a maximum of 3 donation hours.
How do I turn in service hours? The link to submit service hours will be sent out monthly on Remind and Google Classroom. The Google Form will keep track of how many hours you have completed everytime you enter a new activity in.
Do summer hours count towards the 12 hours? A maximum of 4 summer service hours count towards the fall semester.
When and where are meetings held? Monthly meetings are held on the second Friday of each month @ 4:45pm during a Zoom meeting (links are sent out the day of on Remind, Google Classroom and the website).
If I miss a meeting, are there makeups? There are no makeup meetings, but join the Google Classroom to view the slides for the meeting you missed and ask questions through Remind! Make sure you complete the required service activity as well.
