EDITOR'S NOTE The breezy chills of winter have entered as cold fronts bear lower temperatures in the fifties and sixties. Sweater weather has officially begun!

Every morning, I am greeted by the morning sun as I waddle to my desk... to turn on my laptop and chromebook (gotta log into PISD Web-desk :)). This is a routine for me, starting at 9 am everyday, though I do sleep-in on the weekends. Even though almost everything that I do is in a virtual setting, I feel that I've been able to connect with others in a variety of ways. As the holiday season begins to roll around, I'm wishing the best to all of our lovely Key Clubbers and families.

SPOOKY SEASON SERVICE!

Dhuha Haider's Spooky Season Service Drawing.

October is the spooky season of the year; ghosts, zombies, jack-o-lanterns, and skeletons galore! The only difference this year, however, is that trick or treating is not possible this year and the joy of going to everyone’s houses to gather some sweets is out of the question. But one way Key Clubbers are spreading the Halloween spirit is by drawing chalk art in surrounding neighborhoods. And so, the mandatory service for October was named, spooky season service! This opportunity was announced during the October monthly meeting and since THE KEY POINTS | 06

then, the Plano East Key Clubbers have sent in a plethora of their artwork! The members had a choice of either sending in a picture of a chalk drawing or three paper drawings to receive an hour of service. With approximately forty drawings sent in, each piece represents the pure essence of Halloween and we were able to raise community encouragement during this spooky season. Additionally, this service event truly brought in the collaborative spirit to Key Club because each person was working towards the same goal of supporting the holiday cheer.

The Plano East Key Club officer team hopes to continue sponsoring service activities that further individual development of character and leadership through concerted projects. The November mandatory service will include the aspect of teamwork to support an important movement! Even though there will have to be multiple precautions to abide by all social distancing rules, we plan to have

socials to generate a special bond between all Key Club members. There were so many decorative drawings sent in and some are featured on the Plano East Key Club Instagram! There are already three dedicated posts to showcase all the talent that our members have and the officers always appreciate the time and effort everyone puts in.

Go check out everyone’s wonderful artwork on the Instagram page using the handle @pesh.keyclub.

SUPPORTING A KEY CLUB

FAMILY Our members' optimism and perseverance.

THE KEY POINTS | 08

Since the end of last school year, the Key Club officer team of 2020-2021 held multiple meetings discussing where Key Club was headed, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic lingering on. Fortunately, the mediums of virtual communications such as Google Classroom, Remind, and Instagram were available for a connection between the officers and members this year. Plano East Key Club was able to adapt by holding online Zoom meetings to foster a community!

Every meeting is available to our members through an online format and the officer team always loves to see the members’ bright faces each month. Though there were multiple challenges posed, such as a collection of bylaws and fifteen dollar dues regarding the communication to the members, the members were able to come together at each meeting

SERVING OTHERS

to share the values of service successfully! Since the beginning of this school year, the amount of members that we have has been a lovely surprise because of the unlikeliness of member engagement due to the challenge of communication during the pandemic. Thankfully, the Key Clubbers were able to spread the word about Key Club as a prospering service club and invite people to join our family! Without the Key Club members, our school chapter would not be successful. It is the positive attitudes of the Key Clubbers that push the club towards greater achievement in spite of the coronavirus. Some members have gone above and beyond to volunteer during the summer for the betterment of their community. Services activities such as helping out at the I-58 Mission Food Pantry (done by Tami Adio) and helping out at the Collin County Assistance Center (done by Kaitlyn Hong) collectively

Although I have not been in Key Club for very long, I already feel like I am making a difference in the community around me - especially with the emergence of alternate ways to volunteer online, which have manifested during the current pandemic. With the past service opportunity, we sent virtual notes of encouragement to new families and healthcare professionals. Every note we made was filled with

words of positivity and gratitude THE KEY POINTS | 12

to thank them for their services towards society or share words of wisdom with new parents. This small action had the potential to change someone's life and make them a more grateful person, which would in turn spread this sense of positivity throughout society.

NEVERTHELESS, NEVERTHELESS, THE NEW REASON THAT THAT REASON KEEPS ME ME KEEPS MOTIVATED TO TO MOTIVATED HELP MY MY HELP NEIGHBORHOOD, NEIGHBORHOOD, NATION, AND AND NATION, THE WORLD WORLD IS IS THE TO SEE SEE WHERE WHERE TO THIS JOURNEY JOURNEY THIS WILL LEAD LEAD ME. ME. WILL

This is why I felt like I was making a difference around me. Now everywhere I look, all I see is this phenomenon, known as the butterfly effect, and it makes me feel a tiny bit better that we, as individuals, can have colossal impacts. Furthermore, I saw the butterfly effect within myself. Because I wrote those notes of encouragement, I was motivated to help my community in other ways. I now asked myself, "Why should I stop here? Why not help even more people?" I signed myself up to transcribe articles from the Freedmen’s Bureau via the Smithsonian Museum. Promptly, I started asking myself why I wasn’t helping more people. "Why not help the entire world?" I thought. The sheer multitude of these questions steered me to contribute in a plethora of ways. I employed my transcription skills to encode TED Talks that occurred around the world. For me, the natural succession of order in helping my community led me here;

OUR WEBSITE & INSTAGRAM

Samara Amin working on the Key Club Website.

As a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic, both the webmaster and marketer of Plano East Key Club’s officer team have had their work cut out. The website and Instagram have served as means of communication for many years, but because those are the primary sources of communication this school year, there have been many changes. These changes are happening one by one, but the goal is to increase engagement with members in the best ways possible. THE KEY POINTS | 14

This school year’s webmaster is Samara Amin. She manages the website by posting all information about meetings, membership requirements, service opportunities, newsletters, member of the month, PVCs, and contact information. Not only does Samara post this information on the website, but she also does it in an engaging and organized format. The website is an important source of communication from the officer team to the members and all of the information

needed is displayed on the site. You can find all information about Plano East Key Club on tinyurl.com/peshkeyclub. Kayla Ngo is this year’s marketer. Her primary role is in developing the Plano East Key Club Instagram. In addition to managing Instagram, Kayla designs many of the flyers for different service events that our members are informed about. This year, she plans to use the post, story, and reels feature on Instagram to build a better community of Key Clubbers. Currently, Kayla has published welcome, officer and sponsor introduction, October meeting information, and Spooky Season Service posts to Instagram as well as checklists before each monthly meeting on stories to remind all Key Club members of the mandatory services and dates of meetings!

During November, the officer team hopes to include questions of the month on Instagram and Google Classroom to help build better connections with all of our members. For example, October’s question of the month was “What’s your favorite Halloween Candy?” and a total of 59 students answered the question! In this way, students in Plano East Key Club will be able to learn more about their peers and become

PART OF A FAMILY.
