EDITOR'S NOTE

Cool air tickled my feet reminding me that the annual Texas winter weather is coming. It's time to get out the puffer jackets and beanies because I know I can't handle anything below 50 degrees.

Dark purple dumbbells lay on my wooden desk as a reminder. . . to do an upper arm and ab workout each day as I wait for class to start. This may be a premature new year's resolution in the making, but I have to get gains some how! But there are only two more weeks until a nice long winter break; then we will be able to sip on hot chocolate and snuggle under the covers for a long hibernation or at-least I will.

This may be the last newsletter you read of the year 2020, so happy new year as well!

SMALL DONATIONS WITH A HUGE IMPACT

Before I entered Key Club, I never knew how big the world of service was. My circles were small, but before I realized it, I was creating a second family from home with people that loved to volunteer with me.

Currently, the Plano East Key Club has a little over 70 members that participate in mandatory volunteer events such as the March of Dimes Notes of Hope or the Spooky Season Service. This past month’s mandatory service event was the donation drive and awareness for period poverty sponsored by Plano East Key Club and Protect the Period.

Protect the Period reached out to the Plano East Key Club officer team for a partnership and that was manifested into a donation drive by for our members to contribute to. Protect the Period is a local menstrual movement aiming to serve menstruators in need, end period stigma, and advocate for policy changes in Texas.

In fact, they have already donated approximately 4,000 menstrual products to City House and are having another donation drive until the end of this year. In addition to donating products as contributed by the community, they inform

everyone through social media about supporting the local menstrual movement by encouraging their followers to serve menstruators in need, end period stigma, and advocate for policy changes concerning the pink tax. You can support and find their information on their Instagram page at the handle @protecttheperiod.

If I had not been in Key Club, I would have never known that there was a huge problem with period product poverty, even as a woman myself. But due to Protect the Period, I was able to learn that there need to be change in the menstrual world

and by sharing awareness with our fellow Key Clubbers, the officer team was able to help protect the period and raise donations for their drive this winter.

You should consider donating period products such as pads and tampons to Protect the Period as well. With PLano East Key Club, you can drive by the front of the IB building on December 4th or December 17th from 4:30-5:30pm to donate as many packs of pad and tampons as you want (there is a maximum hour limit of 3 however). $8-$12 in product is equal to one donation hour.

end of the semester party with cookies, snacks, and a holiday movie to be watched after the informational part of the meeting. Last year we were able to have such a party while watching Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch. I particularly remember eating the iced sugar cookies while talking to my fellow Key Clubbers as we watched the movie on the projector.

This year, we can’t come together in room B1-274 to watch a movie and feast on delicious treats, but with the help of technology, we will be able to have a winter watch party. This is possible because of the sharing screens feature on Zoom, which will allow one of the hosts to share their screen that shows the movie playing so that all the members can watch the movie. In addition, the Plano East Key Clubbers could bake their own sugar cookies and brownies to eat while watching the movie together. Even though this year’s end of the semester party won’t be normal, we can still have a lot of fun virtually.

In terms of service opportunities, some members made holiday card for the elderly, but also, the annual Salvation Army Bell Ringing happens around the winter time and this year is on different.

There will be more safety precautions such as wearing masks and using hand sanitizer periodically, but our Plano East Key Club members will still be able to sign up to ring the bell to collect donations in the red kettles for the Salvation Army.

Plano East Key Club usually works in conjunction with Plano Kiwanis to get members signed up and ready to volunteer for the Salvation Army and the officer team will be doing so shortly.

During this 2020 holiday season, we hope to spread as much love and happiness as possible. None of these events would be possible without our lovely

Hello! My name is Evelyn Sheng, and this is my first year in the Plano East Key Club. I have previously been/am currently in the National Honor Society (NHS) and Interact Rotary Club, but Key Club brings a different kind of fun! I first heard about it by stumbling upon one of the officer’s Instagram story and am so glad I approached her and asked for more information about this amazing organization.

The officers are so hardworking and understanding and I’m so blessed to be led by them! I absolutely love all the service activities and meetings they have planned for us. They are also so organized, which is something I value so much, and are always actively updating us through so many platforms so everyone won’t miss out (Google Classroom, Remind, Instagram, etc).

It’s a great way to learn/review from our peers about a variety of classes.

Another project was writing notes of encouragement to teachers, doctors, and others. I can’t imagine how overwhelmed these people may be with their jobs and it was really nice being able to spread kindness to them this way. The most recent project was a chalk drawing (or paper) Halloweenthemed. It was so thoughtful for the officers to come up with this fun idea since due to the COVID-19 situation, many of us are unable to do what we would normally do on Halloween.

Through little artistic decorations, we had lots of fun while reminding those in our community that it can still be a spooky season and hopefully, these brought a smile to their faces.

Overall, Key Club has been such an amazing experience so far and I’m excited for what the rest of the year has to offer!

TEXAS OKLAHOMA'S SERVICE SAFARI

As the sun’s rays peeped through the cracks of my window, my eyes fluttered open to the view of my bedroom ceiling. A second later, my phone started ringing with the words “Service Safari” on the display screen. I got up, turned off my alarm, and walked to the bathroom to freshen up.

T-O’s Service Safari was hosted by the Texas Oklahoma District Key Club officers and staff in order to guide local Key Club chapters through volunteering and leading during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When the clock showed 8:55 am, I turned on my laptop, got my morning matcha latte and sat at my desk waiting to get into the opening Zoom to the Safari. I was welcomed with smiling faces as we all waited for Kareena Patel, the District Governor, to start Texas Oklahoma’s Service Safari.

As the Plano East Key Club Editor, I attended the Editor’s Forum after the introduction and learned about what it meant to be the editor of your Key Club chapter. The district editor, Katelyn Tran, and Division 26 Lieutenant Governor,

Maybeline Ong, led the whole group through a wonderfully made powerpoint and informed me of both the International and District Brand Guides which were to be used for the newsletters as well as the social media posts. Furthermore, the hosts of the meeting also went through each task that the editors have to do; this includes newsletters, articles, HOTO (Humans of Texas-Oklahoma), photos, letters to the editor, and answers to a riddle every month. Thanks to their guidance, I was able to figure out how to efficiently design and develop all of the assignments to be turned in by the fifth by 11:59 pm of each month.

sponsored by Texas Oklahoma Key Club and will hopefully apply for the Outstanding Club Editor Award.

After I attended the Editor’s Forum, I switched to the Zoom hosted by Stephen Fu who was talking about the Service Opportunities that were available both virtually and in person. In addition, I gained insight in reaching out to different non-governmental organizations to find service opportunities and also create everlasting bonds through volunteerism.

Overall, the Service Safari was a wonderful event held by Texas Oklahoma District Key Club.

For those lingering questions. . .

What are service hour requirements?

12 hours are to be submitted via Google Form this Fall Semester, you can have a maximum of 3 donation hours.

How do I turn in service hours?

When and where are meetings held?

The link to submit service hours will be sent out monthly on Remind and Google Classroom. The Google Form will keep track of how many hours you have completed everytime you enter a new activity in.

Monthly meetings are held on the second Friday of each month @ 4:45pm during a Zoom meeting (links are sent out the day of on Remind, Google Classroom and the website).

Do summer hours count towards the 12 hours?

If I miss a meeting, are there makeups?

A maximum of 4 summer service hours count towards the fall semester.

There are no makeup meetings, but join the Google Classroom to view the slides for the meeting you missed and ask questions through Remind! Make sure you complete the required service activity as well.
