HOW HAS KEY CLUB MADE DHUHA HAIDER

I joined Key Club during my sophomore year of high school, I was a part of multiple clubs but I specifically was interested in Key Club because it was a smaller organization that promoted volunteering and had numerous different opportunities catered to members. Since I’ve joined, I believe Key Club has helped me improve both as an individual and a student.

Before joining Key Club, I saw volunteering as a chore and only took part to gain hours. Although there were a few events I enjoyed going to, I never found one organization that I wanted to continue to dedicate my time to because I found it interesting and important.

After being a part of Key Club for a few years, I now see volunteering as a way to help out our community, to be involved, to take initiative, and to most importantly to contribute to something you care about. While in Key Club, I’ve found a passion for volunteering in my community. Volunteering has allowed me to improve my own interpersonal and communication skills.

Through Key Club, I found Second Chance SPCA - A local no kill animal shelter.

Because SPCA is a small shelter, they’re only able to operate with volunteers.

While volunteering I learned that no kill animal shelters are no kill because they only accept a limited

YOU THE PERSON YOU ARE amount of animals. This amde me interested in continuing to dedicate my time there because they are mostly funded through donations. Because SPCA is a small shelter, they’re only able to operate with volunteers. Since regularly volunteering at SPCA, I’ve found that it is something I am passionate about and enjoy.

I’ve developed numerous skills and continue to stay involved because it is a cause I care about.

I am not volunteering only to gain only but to also gain experience and to lend a hand to these animals in need. I’ve also met many people through Key Club, many of which are just as passionate as I am about volunteering.

Overall, Key Club has helped motivate and encourage me to be a part of different organizations allowing me to improve different skills and making me a better leader.

HOW DOES KEY CLUB IMPLEMENT

The idea of leadership is implemented with the addition of officers and managers, members can look forward to interviewing for an officer position to make changes and to lead. But leadership is not only found within the officer but the members as well.

One of the most significant ways Key Club implements leadership is the Sophomore of the Year Scholarship, it encourages sophomores to stay involved and to show leadership within their communities. Key Club also promotes character building by promoting volunteering for causes

Key Club also promotes caring and inclusiveness in that everyone is more than welcome to be a part of the club as long as they are respectful and kind to each other. We even continue to welcome new members throughout the school year so that people can join when they’re interested.

Many of the volunteering opportunities that are introduced during meetings are very local and easy to volunteer at so that everyone has a chance to be included and there are also volunteer opportunities at school as well. Also, working together as a team and trying to serve the community is implemented in the club.

Big or small, every club goes through its own fair share of obstacles. At Plano East, Key Club had experienced a large obstacle regarding communicating with members and officers. With the start of COVID in early 2020 came online schooling which definitely created the challenge of communicating with each other virtually.

However, our home club definitely managed to overcome this challenge in countless ways.

For starters, the use of social media was greatly enhanced during this past year.

Social media not only served as a way to directly engage with members by keeping them informed but also a way to share personal thoughts and experiences.

Through Instagram specifically, members were given a way to share their summer volunteering experiences or plans in general.

As a club, our officers have worked hard to overcome the obstacles that have come our way primarily due to the online learning environment by providing members with easy ways to reach out. Our members, too, have helped prevent such obstacles from growing by taking initiative and participating in these opportunities. So a thank you to everyone who has helped Key Club thrive despite such challenges.

As an IB student, I’m so grateful to be in Key Club for my fourth year in 2021-2022. When I first joined, I viewed Key Club as a way to motivate myself to volunteer more, to help the community during my free time, and this motivation hasn’t dwindled. Rather than sitting at home idling time away, I’ve grown my love for meeting new people and giving my time to help those in need. Granted, this proved to be a bit challenging with the pandemic. When everything switched to virtual seemingly overnight, I was left with a lot of questions on how volunteering would evolve. I viewed the internet as a vast,

global system and didn’t understand how one student from PESH would be able to impact anyone’s life through it. However, then Key Club started presenting its members with so many virtual volunteering opportunities. I read Key Club’s monthly Newsletters and attended Key Club’s Zoom meetings where I connected face-to-face with peers and viewed endless amounts of service opportunities.

One of my most memorable volunteering experiences was creating letters of gratitude to nurses and caretakers. I remember writing my appreciation for these individuals, and I was pleasantly surprised when three of these nurses sent pictures of their smiling faces holding printed out letters that students wrote for them.

COVID was by simply sharing thoughts of kindness, I can bring joy to someone’s day. That reminder was all I needed to keep volunteering. I wrote many heartfelt notes through many organizations Key Club connected us with, and this is something I hope to continue even as our world slowly turns back to in-person experiences.

Key Club has been an exciting and meaningful way to volunteer around my community with peers at school. I’ve learned recently that although I haven’t had much experience leading individuals, by using my voice to share my thoughts and using my time to benefit as many people as I can, PESH Key Club members and I are leading the way to better ourselves and the future.

Our first ever DCM with our wonder Kayla Ngo, was over the summer.
