EDITOR'S NOTE On a normal morning, I'd wake up to slightly chilly air and open my window to view the yellow tinged grass and gray roads. But on the 10th, snow flurries were starting to flutter in the air.
A few days before the first snow day fo 2021 in the DFW area, the snowflake was visible on the Weather app's ten day forecast; however, because of my experience with the weather forecast, I didn't think too much of the possibilities of snow. So fast forward a few days and. . . there is actually snow falling from the sky! It was certainly a pleasant surprise, but it's getting quite chilly, so get comfy and find out what PESH Key Cub was up to in January.

SECOND SEMESTER SHENANIGANS

The January meeting marked Plano East Key Club’s first meeting of the year 2021. It was kicked off with the announcement of the member of the month: Brian Nguyen! After that, service hour requirements were declared: twelve hours of service are due by May 14th, which gives members approximately four months to complete them. The t-shirt survey and holiday photo Google Form were then released for members to THE KEY POINTS | 06
fill out and the December newsletter link was shown in case any members wanted to see a recap of the last month. And finally, it was time to reveal the required service activity:
FREE RICE! Free Rice is an ad-supported website that donates grains of rice as users play games and answer questions; each question is a payment roughly equivalent to 5 grains of rice.
This service opportunity was a wonderful one to start with because of the accessibility and impact it has on the world, especially during the pandemic. Plano East Key Clubbers must gain 500 grains of rice to receive one hour of credit; a screenshot of the 500 grains of rice on your screen will suffice as proof. But what do these aspects of the first meeting of 2021 have to do with our goals this year? Well, during the second half of this school year, the officer team aims to continue being consistent in terms of content and
service opportunities that are chosen each month. In compound with the service opportunities, the officer team hopes to hold some socials with our members to further our community bond and create a pleasant environment for everyone. Rounding out the year, officer applications will open up again and we hope to receive a large number of applicants who will be able to grow Key Club into the next school year. These applications will most likely be opened in either late March or early April, so be on the lookout if you are interested!

SPREADING THE
KEY CLUB SPIRIT what to look forward to as we head further into 2021

Every year, Plano East Key Club has a specially made t-shirt for the members to spread the Key Club spirit throughout the year. As the second semester begins in the new year of 2021, the officers hope to distribute t-shirts to our members later this year to continue that tradition. In years past, we have used Custom Ink to distribute t-shirts: this allows the officers to put the design for the year and then send out a link to members that are interested in purchasing the t-shirt. From there, members order their t-shirt through Custom Ink, and after the deadline to
order t-shirts, they would be shipped to the school and handed out soon after. This year, we are using Custom Ink again, but there is a new feature that allows members to have the t-shirt shipped to their address to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. As of the end of January, about twenty students wish to receive this year’s t-shirt, which means the officers will most likely be giving out the link to order it during the February meeting. Make sure to stay updated on information about t-shirts by staying on top of Remind, Google Classroom, and our website!
The Plano East Key Club’s t-shirt design this year features the Key Club International motto “Caring - Our Way of Life.” Furthermore, the back of the t-shirt has a silhouette of Plano East and the fountain. The color of the shirt is a light blue with white text and designs. The officers have decided to get quarter-zips in navy blue to match the theme of the shirts; they feature the Key Club international logo.

Many thanks to Key Club for this totally planned surprise early birthday gift that was 100% remembered! It is always an honor to get recognized in something you are genuinely happy to be a part of. Since I have started, I was always so confused as to why some people viewed doing community service or volunteering for different organizations as somewhat like a chore, only done because it’s a requirement for NHS or related clubs. In any case, I found a lot of joy in volunteer work. As I see it, you're simply spending some THE KEY POINTS | 12

time with friends or family while actively helping others. You get to make yourself look good for colleges while being a useful member of society! Congratulations for being a good human being. Of course, I find a lot more value in volunteering than just for college application purposes. Specifically through Key Club, my recent hours have taught me certain lessons: patience through babysitting,

time management versus procrastination (as I sit here at 1:45 AM, writing this essay on 5 hours of sleep), and, most importantly, reinforcing my passion for helping others. The recent year has been a really rough time for everyone involved, ranging from increased stress levels, loneliness, and depression in quarantine to the daunting task that is being a healthcare worker during this pandemic, and everything in between. I really do feel bad for anyone growing up in this unfortunate environment. However, Key Club has given me the opportunity to have an impact, such as sending encouraging letters to frontline workers and expecting mothers through March of Dimes or even just donating to those in more need than I am. Volunteering and doing service hours through Key Club reminded me of why I want to be a pathologist so desperately. I am now more motivated than ever to maintain a perfect GPA, get at least a 1500 on the SAT and 35 on the ACT, get a full ride scholarship, and absolutely breeze through medical school for the chance to help out strangers for the rest of my life. Let’s just ignore that there's just a tiny, incredibly slim chance I might be exaggerating, and just focus on the wholesome parts.

EXTENDING OUR SERVICES TO KEY CLUBBERS

The second half of the school year has started, which means that project deadlines are coming closer. Plano East Senior High School also houses the students of the International Baccalaureate program (ninth to twelfth grade); these students must complete a CAS project (creativity, activity, service project). With this in mind, Key Club is hoping to extend a helping hand to IB students who need people to help with their CAS projects, which will also allow others to earn service THE KEY POINTS | 14
hours through an opportunity coordinated by their peers. To get the people needed for your project, you may email or text one of the officers or sponsor of PESH Key Club through Remind or stay after a monthly meeting to talk about it with the officers and the sponsor; members can also use the suggestion Google Form located on each of the meeting powerpoints that are posted on the Google Classroom under classwork topic “Meetings.”
Of course, members do not need to have specifically a CAS project to request help from Key Club members; most service projects that need support will work. If there are questions, you can always ask one of the officers about your particular project. In the past, Plano East Key Clubbers have helped many students with their Girl Scout and Boy Scout Projects and individual projects: we hope to continue helping our members this way. On the topic of suggesting volunteer projects to contribute to,
Key Clubbers can always propose new opportunities to the officers that can be added to the volunteer activity master list we have for this year. Please keep in mind that the best volunteer opportunities are those that are either both online and in-person or only online to accommodate people who may not be able to leave their environment due to the coronavirus.

If I miss a meeting, are there makeups?
The link to submit service hours will be sent out monthly on Remind and Google Classroom. The Google Form will keep track of how many hours you have completed everytime you enter a new activity in.
There are no makeup meetings, but join the Google Classroom to view the slides for the meeting you missed and ask questions through Remind! Make sure you complete the required service activity as well.
Do winter break hours count towards the 12 hours?

Yes! All hours you got from winter break count towards this semester's 12 hours.

12 hours are to be submitted via Google Form this Fall Semester, you can have a maximum of 3 donation hours.
