LIVING, BREATHING, VOLUNTEERING

DHUHA HAIDER

always try to optimize my time during summer and be a part of as many volunteering events as I can but it can be difficult to motivate myself. Key Club has helped encourage me to continue to volunteer and stay involved even during summer! Because I had the responsibility of completing the newsletter, I tried to go to as many volunteering events as I could. I spent a lot of my time volunteering at SPCA, I got to take care of the dogs and cats, feeding, walking, etc. and improved my skills in taking care of animals. Seeing these animals get adopted was quite a good feeling and made me want to continue to volunteer at SPCA.

WHERE LEARNING BEGINS| 06

I especially had a lot of fun volunteering at SPCA with other Key Club members and it helped spark my interest in animals and their well-being!” I also really enjoyed volunteering at the Red Cross. This year, there was a decrease in blood supply due to COVID and it had it's repercussions therefore it was essential to continue to volunteer and advertise blood drives regularly, which is what I tried my best to do. The Red Cross has a multitude of opportunities throughout the summer and are very safe when taking blood they follow all COVID precautions

and regulations. I absolutely love keeping in touch with my community and lending a hand to others!

KEY TO KEEPING ON TRACK

DHUHA HAIDER

With the school year starting, there is a lot of adjusting needed especially since COVID. It can be very easy to get overwhelmed since COVID had allowed for a lot more flexibility in classes, timings, etc. One way to keep track of classes, extracurriculars, etc. is to keep a planner, bullet journal, or even keep reminders on your phone! Use something that you constantly check so that you will remember what you need to do, you may think that you can remember everything without writing/typing it out but you might find that it takes some stress off knowing that you have everything you need to do planned out visually. Another way to balance school life and outside life is to manage your time! It can be easy to feel overburdened by everything going on in your life but if you make time for both school and social life, WHERE LEARNING BEGINS| 08

you won’t feel as stressed out. When you have a lot of things to do, try to finish things one at a time, don’t think about everything you need to finish at once. Lastly, keep check of your mental health! It is very important to make sure you take time for yourself because if your mind is not happy, it can be even more difficult to get certain tasks done! Give yourself a reward once you’ve completed something that took a lot of time and effort, break your studying into smaller sections, and make time for sleep and self care!

TAKE PART AND As the new school year has begun, our officer team (pictured) has been faced with the obstacle of keeping old members engaged and getting new members to join. We are faced with questions such as why Key Club? or What makes it different, unique, and beneficial? The answer to these questions has not only helped us to gain more members but also understand the significance of this international organization.

Why Key Club? And What’s in it for members? Key Club is an internationally recognized volunteer organization that looks great on college applications. Members are able to participate as freshmen, and sophomores are offered the opportunity to apply for the sophomore of the year scholarship. Although members may be involved in multiple organizations, participating in more than one allows members to access more service opportunities in the community. Not only do our members help Key Club, but it helps our members strive to be better people that are wellrounded, connected, and passionate about serving their community in many ways. As our member of the month, Robby Zarate says, “I joined Key Club as a freshman and have made many new friends and met many new people these past 4 years.

D LEAVE A MARK By volunteering at events like the Balloon Festival, I got to experience different parts of Plano I wouldn’t have been able to otherwise and communicate with people from different backgrounds. Key Club provided me with these opportunities that have given me amazing experiences while serving my community.” Furthermore, as officers, we have come up with several ways to promote Key Club to the new student population. Each officer spoke to a freshman or sophomore class to encourage members to continue pursuing Key Club for more than one or two years. By doing so, we are proud to say our first meeting had around 100 members- many being underclassmen!

MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Hey! I’m Robby Zarate. I am super excited to be a part of Key Club this year, especially since it's in person for the first time in forever! I believe that this year will be an amazing year for Key Club now that everyones back, considering that Key Club's preliminary meeting was a total success and was more or less like a family reunion. I am ecstatic to attend the many more meetings to come this year! In the past years that I have been in Key Club, just being a member in itself provided many opportunities for making new friends and participating in community events, as well as volunteer events. This is particularly simple to interact with, as Key Club offers many opportunities for this purpose. Personally, in my freshman year, volunteering at the balloon festival along with the other Key Club members was a day to remember, and ultimately fostered the relationships I have now with my friends!

In addition, in preparation for this year's service hour requirement, Key Club has motivated me to volunteer at local animal shelters, such as the SPCA. Especially since the pandemic has created conflict with the ability to volunteer, it was difficult to volunteer in general all throughout quarantine. However, this summer as I have been able to volunteer once again, it was a great experience to interact with the other volunteers at the shelter. Thus, not only was I able to spend time with my friends that I had not seen over the course of quarantine, but it also allowed me to connect with my community, as well as spend time with the animals of course! To me, Key Club has been a great experience throughout the entirety of my high school career, and altogether, Key Club has further integrated me within the school body, as well as encouraged me to interact with our community more.
