PES A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT

It has been a privilege and a pleasure ...

Since my election to PESGB Council, the last two years appear to have passed in the blink of an eye. I started my year in office as President hopeful that there would be a tangible upturn in business and operational activity for our industry. The public’s questioning and opposition to fossil fuels is becoming increasingly vocal and has gained traction across the political spectrum. This head wind is likely to continue as our industry adapts and evolves to accommodate future market forces. However, I am confident that the talent of our members will find innovative solutions to the challenges ahead.

The PESGB has been greatly affected by the industry downturn with our membership falling from over 6300 in 2014 to around 4000 in 2019. This decrease has sharpened the PESGB’s focus on continuing to provide a compelling service for its members. During 2019, the Society has convened a full and diverse programme of evening lectures

and meetings (including SIGs and Regional Branches), training courses and conferences. The move to Victoria in February of this year has provided the PESGB with excellent training and networking facilities.

In addition to these events, the momentum of previous years’ outreach activities (GEOLiteracy) has been maintained in 2019. In May, Dr Steve Etches, MBE, delivered the Stoneley lecture in London, Birmingham and Aberdeen. With a combined audience in excess of 458, Steve provided a fascinating and captivating history of his world class collection of dinosaur fossils.

The success of the PESGB is due in great part to those volunteers that contribute to the SIGs. Of particular note are the ‘Young Professionals’ whom have developed a dynamic and engaging programme of events.

It is this cohort that will be instrumental in defining the future direction of the PESGB. From what I have seen thus far, it is heartening to witness an enthusiastic and engaged commitment to the PESGB. The PESGB is run on a day to day

basis by the Executive Director, Maria Iredale. Throughout the course of the year Maria has very effectively managed the ‘business’ side of the Society together with a challenging recruitment programme to ensure the PESGB is well positioned for 2020. The work conducted by Maria and her office colleagues is much appreciated by me and my Council colleagues. I should also take this opportunity to thank Rosy Chirayath (Marketing) who is leaving the PESGB to go solo travelling in South and Central America. Rosy has been with the PESGB since 2013 and has been instrumental in ensuring the success of the PESGB’s big events.

I have been extremely fortunate to have worked alongside a dynamic and creative group of Council colleagues. Thank you for all your help and support. I would like to single out two of my colleagues, Gavin Ward (Treasurer) and Tracey Dancy (Communications Director). Both are standing down having served collectively eleven years on Council - their voluntary efforts and contributions are much appreciated! My successor is Beverley Smith and I look forward to supporting her and her new Council in 2020.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the Granite City Reception on the 3rd December, but I wish you well and hope you have a great night! Meanwhile in London, with PROSPEX 2019 (11 and 12 December) and the President’s Evening (12 December) yet to come, I hope to catch up with you then. If not, then I wish the PESGB membership a very happy Christmas and a successful 2020.

The British Geological Survey exists to give impartial, expert advice on the subsurface to the government, industry and the UK public. Yet discussion about issues like development of unconventional hydrocarbons has been hampered by the lack of comprehensive and open data available to understand the properties of the UK subsurface. Whilst we act as custodian for huge volumes of digital data and physical samples, the lack of complete and internally coherent datasets for common locations makes understanding complex 8 PESGB December 2019

issues problematic. The difficulty in accessing the data necessary to study these problems, especially when immediate responses are required by government or to reassure the general public after any kind of incidents can be a real problem.

In June 2019 after a 3 year process the British Geological Survey was given planning permission to deliver the UK Geoenergy Observatories site in Cheshire. The Cheshire Energy Research Facility Site (CERFS) has been designed to deliver brand new research capabilities it the UK’s earth

science community, funded by NERC on behalf of the UKRI. The UK faces many pressures on its environment and it need to ensure energy security in the coming years Resolving these issues and understanding and quantifying risks inherent in any use of the subsurface is critical for public understanding of these issues. These risks need to be expressed honestly and transparently to ensure that the UK public can make informed decisions about how best to decarbonised our economy.

CERFS consists of a series of

arrays of different boreholes across a site that’s approximately 4 km east-west by 3 km north-south.

Collectively the arrays will allow the geology of this area to be described and characterised to extremely high resolution (see Figure 1, a map of the drillsite). The site lies across a horst block with grabens either side (See Figure 2, a seismic section that highlights these structures): Array 1 will study the groundwater in the superficial deposits and top of the underlying Permo-Triassic sandstones which are a potable water aquifer; Array 2 will provide the UK’s highest resolution seismometer array capable for measuring earth movement as small as -0.6 to -1.0 M; Array 3 will provide a 1200 m deep research borehole which will define the detailed stratigraphy and the

Permo-Trias and Carboniferous sequences in this area; Array 4 will allow detailed flow testing of the properties of the faults, testing of geothermal potential, and detailed testing of the hydrogeology of the overburden.

Once these wells are complete this site will provide a completely unique research infrastructure allowing hydrogeological testing for research questions, testing of new downhole equipment and sensor technologies.

The completed drillsite will become the prime site for undertaking geological research and subsurface technologies in the UK. A core component of the UK Geoenergy Observatories approach is the openness and transparency of the data to be collected. All initial data will be made available via the UK Geoenergy Observatories portal

(ukgeos.ac.uk) to the scientific community as soon as possible post acquisition. Basic acquisition data will be available to anyone interested within days to weeks of collection.

Scientists will be given the opportunity to take samples of all rock, fluids and gases; they will be given up to 2 year to undertake research under a moratorium, thereafter all of the research results will be added to the portal. The intention is to create an ever growing archive of the geological data around this observatory to improve our understanding of the detailed processes in the subsurface. This will create a location and detailed database of high-resolution geological data which will allow detailed modelling to be undertaken to predict potential future uses of the subsurface.

Fast, innovative, on time and on budget: Optimisation of the Arran Development With Catherine Tonge, Alastair Honey, Dave Webster and Caroline Gill The Arran field is a gas development of distal Palaeocene turbidites located in the UK Central North Sea. Arran will be developed with four horizontal wells to be drilled from January 2020 with first production planned in early 2021 over the Shearwater Platform host. Two wells will be drilled in the North of the field around a penetrative salt diapir and two into the low relief structure in the Southern part of the field. Shell have a long history of involvement with Arran as a non-operated partner, but stepped in to take over operatorship in 2018 when the previous operator withdrew shortly before sanction.

of the Joint Venture and a change in equity also caused uncertainty and threatened project delivery. The resulting project timeline was ambitious and required a risk based approach, with an integrated team working across all disciplines in close collaboration to enable the project to be delivered within the terms of the license agreement and to a standard acceptable to both the Joint Venture of Shell UK Ltd, Rockrose Energy and ONEDyas, and to the UK regulatory bodies.

Prioritisation to work on the projects biggest risks was undertaken to ensure the project could pass through FID while keeping the field

development plan, cost and schedule as close to that promised as possible.

During the subsequent work, post FID, an opportunity was identified to yield a CAPEX reduction by moving the surface locations of the wells which despite the project being in execute has subsequently been realised.

This paper will firstly document the rapid journey through the transfer of operatorship to FID focussing on risk based decision making and subsequently the integrated work needed to realise the cost saving opportunity, balancing the risks of the change against the reward for making it possible.

The Carboniferous of the Midland Valley Field Trip Leaders: Graham Leslie and Mike Browne, British Geological Survey

Friday 24th – Sunday 26th April 2020 The Spireslack abandoned opencast mine offers a spectacular opportunity to examine many aspects of Carboniferous geology of the Midland Valley in Scotland. During this 1.5 day field trip, which will be led by Graham Leslie and Mike Browne from the British Geological Survey, we will be looking at the sedimentology, structural geology, palaeontology and economic geology of Carboniferous coal bearing strata that have been of great importance in the past. Given the recent activity around the southern margin of the Mid North Sea High, where age-equivalent rocks are found prospective, this field trip offers a good opportunity to study analogues in the field.

AGENDA Friday 24th April – Arrival in village of Cumnock – late afternoon or early evening.

The UK Atlantic margin, including the West of Shetlands area, is the location of the UK’s largest remaining hydrocarbon reserves, the largest recent field development investments and holds the greatest potential for future material discoveries in the UK. In the 10 years since the last Geological Society conference on this region, great advances have been made in the understanding of its diverse plays, from fractured basement to Eocene coastal deposits, and everything in between.

After six and a half years, Rosy Chirayath will be leaving the PESGB Team at the end of December. Say your farewells at PROSPEX and President’s Evening 2019 as these will be her final events. Rosy took a sabbatical in 2018 to solo travel South East Asia. Now with the travel bug, she is leaving PESGB to travel South and Central America in 2020.

Rosy has delivered the PESGB Magazine since 2013 and oversaw the rebrand of the Society in recent years. She will be a familiar face to many of you at industry events.

The ‘Three Counties’ branch is still very much active, meeting in the stable of the historic Three Tuns pub in the heart of Henley-on-Thames. Well worth a visit for the food and refreshments in the cosy traditional wood panelled haunt with open fires. Everyone is welcome so do look out for our dates. We endeavour to hold our get togethers around a thought-provoking short talk to simulate discussion and an opportunity for learning. Some of the past talks have included:

Sigmoid Tectonics

by Andrew long, Director Subterrane Ltd. Controversy can often be good. The main theme of this presentation was structural interpretation of fault patterns in Africa, in relation to plumes, which was referred to as ‘sigmoid tectonics’. Several examples were presented largely from East Africa, utilising mostly Sandwell gravity data.

Beers were required as nearly all of the audience had some past experience of working on projects in East Africa and so unsurprisingly there were variations in the levels of differences in opinion. All attendees were glad to have heard the talk and to discuss informally in the bar.

Multi-component seismic processing – a brief overview

by Richard Whitebread (WesternGeco) This presentation was also very welcome as Richard is an expert in WesternGeco’s centre of excellence and he is ‘hands on’ with several of the industry’s leading ocean bottom projects. A talk on processing is not every Geologist’s cup of tea, but as our venues are strictly informal, held in a good pub with the bar open, this readily facilitates being allowed to ask what the enquirer may themselves consider a “silly question” about seismic processing but never previously dared to ask. So, this was a good opportunity to ask an expert. As Richard pointed out ocean bottom seismic provides a better measurement of compressional seismic wave field. The case studies that were summarised were well explained. There was quite a lot of discussion from experienced Processing Geophysicist’s in the audience before we joined the main bar.

Fine resolution core mineralogy from Infrared Spectroscopy and how to use these data to calibrate logs,

by Dr Adam K Moss (AKM Geoconsulting Ltd) Adam gave an excellent overview on the technique of hyperspectral infrared spectroscopy (HIS) to identify mineralogy in core and cuttings. Using short wave infrared imaging reflectance spectrometry core and cuttings material can be rapidly, and very cost effectively, analysed to provide semi-quantitative datasets without destroying the samples.

Detailed mineral assemblage information of clays, such as illite, smectite, chlorite, and kaolin are readily identified as are micas, carbonates, sulphates and hydrocarbons. The technique has been for many years readily deployed in the mining industry and over the last decade the petroleum industry has been using these tools which are available in the lab and wellsite. Adam demonstrated some specific practical applications in how to use these datasets with some very nice examples to calibrate wireline log interpretations including; obtaining more accurate shale volumes from gamma ray logs, constraining better porosity estimates from HIS mineralogically calibrated density logs, clay bound water T2 cut offs for NMR and lastly some thoughts on mineralogical controls on permeability. The group then retired to the cosy snug bar at front of house to continue the discussion. We look forward to our next event, watch this space….

Harold Reading 1924 - 2019

Written by John Collinson Harold Reading passed away on 13th October 2019, after a short illness. He was 95. Throughout his long career he drove forward research in clastic sedimentology and shared his vast experience through teaching, publication and through taking leading roles in national and international associations. He was an early and long-time member of PESGB and was well known for his courses and for the textbook “Sedimentary Environments and Facies”, which he edited.

Harold was born in Beckenham in 1924 and educated in the Wirral and Hertfordshire, locations dictated by his father’s work as an average adjuster. His formal education was interrupted by the Second World War and, at the age of eighteen, he joined the Indian Army, serving in a cavalry regiment in the northwest of pre-partition India. Harold valued enormously those exciting times and they helped shape his international perspective and understanding.

After the war, he went up to Oxford to read Forestry. However, Geology, a subsidiary subject, captured his imagination through the teaching of J.V. Harrison, who, on horseback, had mapped large tracts of Iran for Anglo-Iranian. Harold and his close friend Myles Bowen, a long-time stalwart of PESGB, both switched to Geology. On graduating, Harold moved to Durham where he completed a Ph.D. under Kingsley Dunham, mapping Yoredale cyclothems across bleak Pennine moorland in the Stainmore Trough.

Harold was recruited by Shell and posted to Venezuela where he 38 PESGB December 2019

worked in the field, mapping and measuring stratigraphic sections in rather different climatic conditions.

Here, Harold had what was probably his most important professional encounter. A visit to Shell by Philip Keunen, who had just published his revolutionary work on turbidity currents and turbidites, led Harold to realise that the interpretation of sedimentary rocks in terms of depositional processes and environments could lead to great insights and this became the underlying theme for the rest of his career.

Returning from Venezuela in 1957, Harold was recruited to the Geology Department in Oxford where he neatly swerved an attempt to make him a vertebrate palaeontologist and

began to forge his own domain in sedimentology. He remained in the department for the rest his career, providing inspirational undergraduate teaching whilst developing his research network. His initial research was supported by Shell with the help of Maurits De Raaf, then Head of Geological Research. Their joint work on the Upper Carboniferous of North Devon, along with Harold’s doctoral student, Roger Walker, led to the seminal paper on the facies analysis of deltaic cyclothems.

Roger’s work on the Shale Grit of Derbyshire initiated a succession of doctoral projects whose scope extended into most areas of clastic sedimentology in rocks of various ages and in worldwide locations.

Harold recognised very early the significance of Plate Tectonic processes and he pioneered the integration of those concepts with sedimentology. Harold was a model supervisor, always available with advice and encouragement when needed, but allowing his students to take initiatives and follow their noses. Of his 40 doctoral students most went on to successful careers in academia, industry and government and Harold’s influence has spread far and wide through them and the succession of students and colleagues that they, in turn, influenced.

In the mid 1970’s, Harold captured the explosive growth of sedimentological knowledge since around 1960 by pulling together and editing the first edition of “Sedimentary Environments and Facies”. This widely read and enormously influential book went through three editions,

each involving new writing, often by new authors, with the consequent editorial burden. The third edition was the product of Harold’s “retirement”. This widely lauded book should be Harold’s lasting legacy.

A spin-off from the first edition was “Sedimentary Research Associates”, a partnership between Harold, the late Trevor Elliott and myself, established to provide courses in clastic sedimentology for the oil industry. Harold’s insistence that teaching, as far as possible, should be in the field led to an annual course in County Clare that lasted for some 25 years, with an aggregate throughput approaching 1000 participants.

These courses helped to open up and develop increasing co-operation between industry and academia, with Harold in demand as a visiting lecturer and as presenter of inhouse and JAPEC courses. His

open, non-dogmatic style, recognising outstanding problems as well as explaining current understanding, engendered huge respect and affection.

Harold was honoured by many prestigious awards. Medals from the Geological Society of London (including a Petroleum Group Silver Medal), SEPM, AAPG and IAS (of which he was successively Publications Secretary, General Secretary and President). The British Sedimentological Research Group, of which he was a founder member, recently inaugurated the Harold Reading Medal.

Harold has left a huge legacy that extends worldwide. His enthusiasm, scientific rigour, integrity and, most of all, his friendly and modest approachability will long be remembered.

He is survived by his four children and his eleven grandchildren.

The Karen Reed Fund You may be aware that we were asked to set up a fund following the tragic death of Karen Reed in 1997, with the object of advancing education in geology or geophysics by the provision of a scholarship or scholarships. The PESGB is delighted to announce that the fund has been increased by £10,000, following a bequest from the Estate of a member of Karen’s family.

The PESGB has previously created scholarships in Karen’s name for Masters Courses, and have recently been able to make a donation of £1,700 to the University of Sheffield Geoscience Department, to contribute to the needs of students studying Earth Sciences there. Karen was a graduate of Sheffield University, and it is therefore appropriate that the first contribution to a University Department, designed to benefit a large number of students, should be made to her alma mater.

PES International News AUSTRALIA ConocoPhillips has entered into an agreement with Santos for the sale of its northern Australia assets. The properties involved in the USD 1.39 billion transaction include a 37.5% interest in the Barossa development project and Caldita field, a 56.9% interest in the Darwin LNG facility and Bayu-Undan field, a 40% interest in the Poseidon field and a 50% interest in the Athena field. The associated production was about 50,000 boe/d in the first half of 2019 and proved reserves were around 39 MMboe at year-end 2018. Santos already owns a 25% interest in Barossa and subject to a final investment decision, a further USD 75 million payment will be required. However, to achieve increased partner alignment, it is preparing to scale down equity in both Barossa and Darwin LNG to a target ownership of 40-50%. In that respect, South Korean gas and power company SK E&S, which currently holds a 37.5% interest in the Barossa project, intends to acquire a 25% equity in Bayu-Undan and Darwin LNG. The sale is expected to close in the first quarter of 2020. ConocoPhillips will retain its 37.5% operated interest in the Australia Pacific LNG project and will use the proceeds for general corporate purposes.

BRAZIL The ANP Round 16 closed on 10 October 2019, with the participation of 11 companies and the pre-award of 12 offshore blocks covering a total area of 11,763 sq km. The tender garnered total signature bonuses of BRL 8.9 billion (USD 2.17 billion), a record compared to previous concessions rounds. The C-M-541 block in the Campos Basin had the highest bonus bid, with Total, QPI and Petronas jointly offering USD 980.36 million. The most contested block was C-M-661, also in the Campos Basin, with three bids and Petronas 46 PESGB December 2019

eventually emerging as the winner.

Chevron was particularly successful, winning two blocks as operator and three as partner. In total, 36 blocks were on offer, with no bids received for 12 blocks in the frontier CamamuAlmada, Jacuipe and PernambucoParaiba basins, three blocks in the Campos Basin and nine blocks in the Santos Basin. The signing of the contracts is planned by 14 February 2020.

CHINA Exploration efforts conducted so far in 2019 have enabled PetroChina to significantly expand its shale gas resource base in the Sichuan Basin.

The company holds three shale gas production blocks in the area – Changning, Weiyuan and Zhaotong – and recently booked a further 741 Bcm (26 Tcf) gas in-place, expanding the total volume to 1,061 Bcm (37 Tcf). PetroChina produced 4.3 Bcm (152 Bcf) of shale gas in 2018, up 40% from 2017, mainly from the Silurian Longmaxi Formation. The company’s next targets are 7.7 Bcm (272 Bcf) in 2019, thanks to recent discoveries and field expansions, and 10 - 12 Bcm (353 - 423 Bcf) in 2020.

The other major shale gas operator in the basin is Sinopec, which produced 6 Bcm (212 Bcf) from the Jiaoshiba field in 2018. China started commercial production of shale gas in 2014 and recovered 10.2 Bcm (360 Bcf) in 2018, which accounted for some 6.5% of the total gas output.

COLOMBIA GeoPark has announced a new oil discovery in the Llanos 34 (LLA34) block. The Guaco 1 well, drilled along the most western major fault trend in the block, has found oil in a combined structural and stratigraphic trap. Oil shows were observed in the Guadalupe and Mirador formations, and a production test in the former resulted in a rate of 960 b/d of 24.6°

API oil on a 35/64” choke, using an electric submersible pump. The well is already in production and appraisal work will help determine the size of the find. Guaco 1 is the 14th oil accumulation discovered and brought on line by the company since the acquisition of the LLA-34 block in 2012.

Interest is split 45:55 between operator GeoPark and Parex Resources.

GeoPark is present in Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Ecuador, and reported a total production of 39,619 boe/d in the third quarter of 2019, of which 85% was oil. Colombia alone accounted for 93% of the company’s oil output.

EGYPT Eni has announced a new find with the Sidri 36 appraisal well in the Gulf of Suez. The well, which was designed to assess the westward extension of the Sidri South structure, encountered a 200 m hydrocarbon column in the clastic sequences of the Nubia Formation. Sidri 36 will be completed and immediately placed on production under a fast-tracked development plan, with initial flow rates expected to reach 5,000 b/d.

Sidri South is currently estimated to hold about 200 MMbbl of oil inplace, although operating company Petrobel (a 50:50 joint venture of Eni and EGPC) plans to reassess the find based on the latest drilling results. The onshore/offshore Abu Rudeis Sidri field has been producing since 1957 and redevelopment operations began in 2015, adding to Eni’s expanded operations in Egypt.

The Italian company’s production reached 350,000 boe/d this year and is expected to grow further with ramp-ups at Zohr and Baltim South West.

GABON Following the successful outcome of its Hibiscus Updip wells in the Dussafu licence, operator BW Energy

has revised the Ruche development plan to integrate the new resources.

Hibiscus, with estimated 2P oil reserves of 45.4 MMbbl, will enable the company to double the production forecast from Ruche Phase 1 to 30,000 b/d. As part of the revision, the proposed platform will be installed 4 km west of the original location and six production wells will be used to drain the Gamba Formation, four at Hibiscus and two at Ruche.

Under the second phase, up to seven wells will be used to maintain the production plateau. Dussafu spans 850 sq km in the Lower Congo Basin and encompasses several oil accumulations, notably Tortue. Connected to the 40,000-b/d “BW Adolo” FPSO, Tortue was brought on stream in September 2018 and yielded an average of 11,600 b/d in the third quarter of 2019. First oil from Ruche and Hibiscus is expected in the fourth quarter of 2021. BW Energy operates the licence with a 73.5% interest, with partners Tullow Oil, Gabon Oil and Panoro Energy holding the balance.

MAURITANIA Kosmos Energy has announced a new gas discovery in the MauritaniaSenegal Basin. The Orca 1 wildcat in Block C-8, drilled in 2,510 m of water with the “Valaris DS-12” drillship, has encountered 36 m of net gas pay in excellent quality reservoirs in a previously untested Albian play and 11 m of net gas pay in the Cenomanian play fairway. The 5,266-m well has proved both the structural and stratigraphic trap of the Orca prospect, estimated to hold a gas in place volume of 13 Tcf. Together with the Marsouin 1 well, Orca 1 is thought to have derisked up to 50 Tcf of gas in place in the BirAllah area, more than enough to support a large-scale LNG project.

Interest in Block C-8 is currently split between BP (62%), Kosmos (28%) and state company SMHPM (10%),

NIGERIA Panoro Energy has reached an agreement with PetroNor for the sale of its 12.19% stake in OML 113, which is located offshore western Nigeria and encompasses the Aje oil and gas field. PetroNor will pay USD 10 million in shares, with the option to pay partly in cash should the price fall below USD 0.13 per share. Also included is a contingent consideration of up to USD 25 million dependent on future gas production. Once completed, the deal will have an effective date of 30 June 2019. OML 113 covers 911 sq km in the Benin Embayment, in water depths ranging from less than 100 m to around 1,500 m. The Aje field was brought on stream in May 2016 and currently produces around 3,000 b/d of oil. Further developments could lead

MOZAMBIQUE As part of its buyout of Anadarko’s assets in Africa, Total has completed the acquisition of a 26.5% operated interest in the Mozambique LNG project. The purchase price was USD 3.9 billion, representing almost half of the USD 8.8 billion consideration for the whole transaction, which also includes assets in Algeria, Ghana and South Africa. The project entails the development of the Golfinho and Atum fields in Offshore Area 1 and the construction of a two-train liquefaction plant on the Afungi peninsula with a capacity of 12.9 MMtpa (1.7 Bcf/d). Almost 90% of the production is already sold through long-term contracts with LNG buyers in Asia and in Europe, and the terminal is expected to come online by 2024.

The other companies involved in the project are Mitsui (20%), ENH (15%), ONGC Videsh (10%), Bharat Petroleum (10%), Beas Rovuma Energy (10%) and PTTEP (8.5%).

OMAN Shell has secured new exploration acreage in Oman, only months after the acquisition of a 50% operated interest in Block 42 (Sharqiyah). The Anglo-Dutch major has signed an Exploration & Production Sharing Agreement (EPSA) for Block 55 in the southeastern part of the Sultanate with the Ministry of Oil and Gas. The licence, also referred to as Kahil, covers an area of 7,517 sq km in the Al Wusta region, slightly extending into coastal waters. Block 55 was previously held by Petrogas under a six-year EPSA contract, signed in late 2013. A gravity-magnetic survey was conducted in 2014, 1,550 km of 2D seismic data was collected in 2015 and three wells were drilled in 20162017. While the first well – Tawfeeq 1 – may have encountered heavy oil in Upper Carboniferous - Lower Permian sandstones, no results were reported from the two subsequent wells. Shell’s current exploration portfolio in Oman comprises Block 42 and a portion of Block 6.

RUSSIA Rosneft recently reported that the deviated Pribrezhnaya Vostochnaya 1 wildcat has found oil. Spudded in May, the well was drilled from the Sakhalin Island to a total depth of 3,047 m, with a 1,450-m horizontal stage targeting a 21-MMbbl prospect in the Nabil Bay. The well identified 70 m of oil-saturated intervals in the Miocene Dagi Formation, similar to the Rosneft’s nearby Nabil field, located around 10 km southeast and currently producing under improved recovery.

PES Pribrezhnaya Vostochnaya 2 outpost in the licence area by end-2020. The appraisal well will have a planned total depth of 3,490 m, including a 1,950m horizontal section. Companies operating in Sakhalin (the main players being Gazprom, ExxonMobil and Rosneft) are looking to uncover more resources, as oil and gas output from the area will reportedly see a marked decline in 2019.

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES With the acquisition of a 5% interest in the Ghasha sour gas project, Lukoil marks its first entry into the

upstream sector of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A farm-in agreement was signed by the company and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) during a state visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin on 15 October. Interest in the Ghasha concession is now divided between ADNOC, operator with 55%, and partners Eni (25%), Wintershall Dea (10%), OMV (5%) and Lukoil (5%).

The 40-year Ghasha concession is located in the Arabian Gulf west of Abu Dhabi and encompasses the Hail, Ghasha, Dalma, Nasr and Mubarraz gas fields. The development will

involve the construction of ten artificial islands and the expansion of an existing one. The project is expected to come online in the mid-2020s and yield over 1.5 Bcf/d – potentially meeting over 20% of the UAE’s gas demand – and more than 120,000 b/d of oil and condensate.

Asia-Pacific News AUSTRALIA Beach Energy (50% and operator) has reported a gas discovery at its Beharra Springs Deep-1 well in the Perth Basin, western Australia with JV partner Mitsui (50%). Beach announced net gas pay of 36 metres across the Permian, Kingia sandstone. Beach considers this to be comparable to the successful 2017 appraisal well Waitsia-4. Strike Energy reported a 69 mmscf/d flow test rate from the Permian Kingia section of its West Erregulla-2 well earlier this year which may suggest deeper potential in this historic onshore basin.

Carnarvon Petroleum has announced that the Triassic Baxter reservoir which was a secondary target at the 2019 discovery of the Dorado field operated by Santos, could yield 30,000 barrels of oil per day.

56.9% interest in the Darwin LNG facility and the declining BayuUndan field which feeds it, a 40% stake in the Poseidon field and a 50% stake in the Athena field, for a total of US$1.39 billion plus a further $75 million upon a final investment decision of the Barossa development project. This is not a country exit since ConocoPhillips remains in Australia on the east coast as part of the Origin Energy-operated Australia Pacific LNG project.

Inpex Corporation has gained approval from the national regulator to carry out a geotechnical and geophysical survey across its Icthys gas and condensate field in permit WA-50-L in the Browse Basin approximately 210 km off the coast of the mainland and 820km southwest of Darwin. Inpex is preparing to expand capacity with further development of the Ichthys field.

The new data is required to confirm pre-engineering studies associated with the detailed design and installation of additional flowlines, umbilicals and subsea infrastructure in WA-50-L as part of this next stage

of the Ichthys LNG Project.

Queensland has released six new permits to Coal Seam Gas companies across the Surat and Bowen basins with two of the four permits, representing 30% of the total award, reserved for domestic-only gas sales.

Strike Energy has begun acquiring 3D seismic across its 100%-owned acreage in EP447 in the Perth Basin. It expects its Walyering field seismic campaign to take six weeks. Strike took the Perth Basin acreage from UIL Energy. Walyering was discovered in 1971 within the early Jurassic Cattamarra coal measures at 3,350 metres. Walyering-1 flowed 13.5 mmscf/d with approximately 1% CO2.

Strike Energy (operator) has announced a 2C resource of 1.185 Tcf for its West Erregulla project in permit EP469 in the Perth basin.

Strike and JV partner Warrego Energy expect additional resources from the Permian Wagina sandstone. The Wagina, and the

overlying Permian targets of the Kingia and High Cliff sandstones, indicated gas but was not flow tested and is not included in the resource assessment. Strike reported discovered P50 gas in place in Kingia was 1.2 Tcf. The Permian lower High Cliff target yielded 213 billion cubic feet on a P50 basis and 181 Bcf on a 2C basis. West Erregulla-2 will be a producer as part of Strike’s planned phase 1 development, targeting production in 2022.

CHINA Horizon Oil and its joint venture partners CNOOC and Roc Oil, have spud an exploration well in the South China Sea. The WZ 6-12 M1 well is targeting the T40-T42 stacked reservoirs between the Weizhou 6-12 North and South

Fields. It will be drilled to a depth of 2,025 metres in Block 22/12 which was awarded to Horizon in 2001.

Block 22/12 lies in the Beibu Gulf, 60 kilometres off China’s southern coast, northwest of Hainan Island. If successful, the plan would be to develop it through the adjacent fields.

THAILAND Tap Oil (30%) and joint venture partner Mubadala Petroleum (70%) have revealed the latest drilling plans for the Manora oil and gas field in the Gulf of Thailand with plans to drill three new exploration wells.

TIMOR-LESTE Carnarvon Petroleum has announced that the Buffalo field which crosses into Timor-Leste’s waters

could hold a 2C contingent resource of 30 million barrels of oil. The plan is to drill two to three wells, which would target a large oil resource.

BHP drilled eight wells in the field last decade, but after intense geological work and use of reprocessed seismic data Carnarvon believes there could an untouched attic accumulation approximately 50 metres to 60 metres above the main reservoir.

PES North Sea News DRILLING ACTIVITY UNITED KINGDOM As of 11 November 2019, 13 exploration wells and eight appraisal wells have completed in the UK this year.

At the time of writing, there were two exploration wells and five appraisal wells active.

In the West of Shetland CNOOC completed operations at its Howick exploration well 206/21-1 on 19 October. The well was targeting Lower Cretaceous sandstones within a four-way dip closure in the West Shetland Basin but failed to find hydrocarbons and was abandoned as a dry hole. The Island Innovator rig has now moved to the Norwegian sector.

CNOOC also completed operations at its Cragganmore appraisal well 208/17a-4 on 23 October which had a top-hole location approximately 3 km NW of the discovery well. A result from the well programme has yet to be confirmed and the partners, CNOOC and INEOS, are assessing the impact of the well to determine future activity in the area.

Operations continue with the Transocean Leader which is drilling the third and final well in Hurricane’s drilling campaign at Warwick West (formerly called Warwick Crestal).

The 204/30b-4 appraisal well was spudded on 24 September and is targeting the basement reservoir at a shallower interval than the 205/26b13 Warwick Deep well which did not flow at commercial rates.

Drilling is continuing at Total’s 206/4a-5 and -5Z Glendronach appraisal well, which spudded on 16 July. The well is seeking to appraise volumes reported by the operator to be in the region of 1 tcf (166.6 mmboe) in the Lower Cretaceous Royal Sovereign Formation. A mechanical sidetrack was kicked off on 28 August as the 206/4a-5Z well.

In the Northern North Sea Cairn’s 3/17a-3 Chimera exploration well was reported on 17 October as 50 PESGB December 2019

having failed to find hydrocarbons.

It is understood that the target Paleocene Heimdal Formation reservoir sands were absent. Chimera was the largest oil prospect to be tested in the UK North Sea this year, with pre-drill resources of 150 mmboe. Operations were completed on 28 October.

Equinor spudded the 10/1b-6 appraisal well on 1 November with the West Phoenix semi-submersible.

The well lies <1 km to the west of the UK/Norway median line and has a surface location within the Frigg field determination area, on the western edge of the field. The well is targeting the Eocene Frigg Formation and is aiming to define the potential for a redevelopment.

In the Central North Sea i3 Energy announced that it’s 13/23c-10 Serenity appraisal well was successful in proving oil in what is considered to be an extension of the Lower Cretaceous Tain discovery. The well was drilled down-dip of the Tain discovery and found oil in both the target Captain and Coracle Sands with an OWC estimated at 5,270ft (1,606m) TVDSS, the same as that at Tain and Blake. The Borgland Dolphin moved to drill i3’s Liberator appraisal well 13/23c-11 which spudded on 8 November and is the last in this three-well programme.

Equinor’s 22/10b-9A exploration well, which spudded on 25 September, was abandoned on 29 October after 35 days of operations.

The well was targeting the Upper Jurassic Fulmar Formation in the Lifjellet prospect, a cross median line structure on the Jæren High.

Westwood understands that the well failed to find hydrocarbons in the target sandstones and was abandoned as a dry hole on 29 October.

Total spudded the 30/12d-11 Isabella exploration well with the Noble Sam Hartley on 13 October.

The well is being drilled in the HPHT Central Graben region and has an

expected duration of c. 125 days, taking operations into 2020. Isabella has pre-drill resources of c. 147 mmboe in the Triassic Skagerrak Formation. The well which is a firm commitment on this 26th Round licence.

In the Southern North Sea, Premier announced on 17 October that its 42/28d-14 Tolmount East appraisal well has successfully encountered gas. The well penetrated 241ft (73m) of gas bearing Leman sands with reservoir quality found to be at the upper end of expectations and no gas water contact penetrated. The discovery will be incorporated into the main Tolmount development.

Operations completed on 6 November at Spirit Energy’s 43/12a3 Andromeda North exploration well which was spudded on 29 July.

Hague and London Oil (HALO) reported pre-drill resource estimates of c. 40 bcf in the Carboniferous, however a result has yet to be announced. In the success case it will form part of the Pegasus development.

Eni spudded its 53/14a-2 Aspen exploration well towards the southern-most extent of the UK Gas Basin with the Valaris 101 on 14 October 2019. The well is targeting a Carboniferous Dinantian carbonate play which has not been proven offshore UK previously. Total farmed-in for a 40% interest in Q1 2019.

UK ONSHORE The Horse Hill-2 well, spudded on 29 September, has completed its coring program as of 15 October.

The core is undergoing geological and petrophysical analysis. On 22 October, the HH-2 well was completed and the well was sidetracked horizontally into the Portland reservoir. Production from Horse Hill-1’s Kimmeridge Micrite reservoir has continued simultaneously with drilling operations in HH-2.

PES North Sea News (cont.) started fraccing operation on 15 August, however micro-seismic events have caused the OGA to declare an indefinite suspension of fraccing of the well since 26 August.

Since the suspension, the hydraulic fracturing equipment has been demobilised and a flow test began in mid-October. On 29 October, Cuadrilla announced that early flow tests have revealed the highest quality natural gas they had encountered in UK shale exploration to date. On 2 November the UK government announced a moratorium on fraccing.

Testing operations in the Permian Kirkham Abbey Shoal Formation at West Newton A-2 appraisal well were suspended on 29 August until revisions were made to the test programme to account for liquids production. Petrophysical interpretation had estimated a 20m (66ft) gas and 45m (148ft) oil column. On 11 November, in-place volumes of base - upside 146 .4 - 283 mmbbls liquids and 211.5 - 265.9 bcf of gas were reported. There are plans to drill two further wells on the structure in H1 2020.

IGas released Bowland Shale core analysis from Spring Road-1 and the results compare favourably to shale plays in the USA in terms of reservoir properties. IGas plans to drill a horizontal appraisal well and obtain permissions for a fraccing programme, although the Government moratorium will need to be lifted before this can be carried out.

NORWAY To date in 2019, 37 exploration wells and six appraisal programmes have completed in Norway.

In the North Sea Repsol Norge spudded the Kathryn exploration well 9/2-12 on 28 September using the Scarabeo 8 semi-submersible.

The well was targeting the Middle Jurassic Sandnes Formation near the Yme field with low-base-high resources of 6 - 48 mmboe but was 52 PESGB December 2019

abandoned as a dry hole.

Equinor’s Gladsheim exploration well 32/4-2 was spudded on 9 September, then re-spudded as 32/4-3 S on 23 September. The well was targeting the Upper, Middle and Lower Jurassic and Triassic to the southeast of the Troll field and encountered moderate to very good reservoir quality intervals in the primary and several secondary targets, however all the intervals were dry.

The well has satisfied the firm commitment on this APA 2017 Round licence.

ConocoPhillips spudded the Busta exploration well 25/7-7 on 29 August with the Leiv Eiriksson semi-submersible. The well is targeting pre-drill resources in the range 54 - 199 mmboe in Upper Jurassic Intra-Draupne Brae-equivalent sandstones and has an estimated duration of 74 days in the dry hole case.

Operations remained active at the time of writing.

On 30 August Aker BP spudded its Kark exploration well 2/1-17 S targeting Upper Jurassic Ula Formation prospectivity south of the Gyda field with secondary targets in the Upper - Middle Jurassic and Triassic and pre-drill resources are in the range 15 - 48 mmboe. The Ula Formation sandstones were absent in the well, however a 5m (16ft) oil bearing Upper Jurassic, Tyne group, Eldfisk Formation was encountered but these resources are non-commercial.

Equinor’s Echino Sør exploration well 35/11-23 was spudded on 6 October close to the Fram field. The well was successful in finding hydrocarbons in the Upper and Middle Jurassic, with GOCs and OWCs established at both reservoir levels.

Initial resource estimates are in the range 38 - 101 mmboe. Assuming a mid-point of 69 mmboe, the discovery is the equal third largest in Norway this year.

MOL Norge spudded the

high-impact 25/8-19 S Evra-Iving well on 2 November using the Deepsea Bergen. The Evra prospect is targeting Eocene injectites as in the nearby Frosk complex, whilst Iving is targeting the Lower Jurassic - Upper Triassic Statfjord Group in a tilted fault block. The JV is targeting combined resources of 181 mmboe.

In the Norwegian Sea, Wintershall DEA’s controversial 6611/1-1 Toutatis well spud on the 2 November using the West Hercules rig. The well is targeting pre-drill resources of c.

165 mmboe in the Lower Jurassic.

The prospect is located near the environmentally sensitive Lofoten Islands and is >150km from the nearest field. A dry hole is estimated to take 30 days with a discovery and 55 days in the event a sidetrack is drilled.

On 28 October, DNO spud the Canela 6507/7-16 S exploration well using the Island Innovator rig. The well is targeting 70 - 120 mmboe in the Middle Jurassic within a downthrown fault block west of the Heidrun field. It is expected to complete in 36 days if dry.

OKEA is drilling two wells in the Draugen field area using the Deepsea Nordkapp rig. The Skumnisse appraisal well 6407/9-12 was spudded on 16 October and suspended as the rig was moved to spud and drill the Infill Ø well 6407/9-11. The Infill Ø well was completed on 29 October having found a minor oil column in the Upper Jurassic. The rig then returned to complete operations at the Skumnisse well which has since been announced as dry. Combined operations for both wells were completed in under a month.

PGNiG spudded its first operated well in Norway on 30 August, targeting pre-drill resources in the range of 10 - 22 mmboe in the Middle Jurassic, Garn Formation, Shrek prospect. The well encountered oil and gas in the Middle – Lower Jurassic and was followed by an

appraisal sidetrack which found oil and gas in the same section. The discovery is considered commercial as a tie-back to the Skarv field with resources of 19 - 38 mmboe. The well completed on 15 October.

OMV’s long-running Iris/Hades appraisal well 6506/11-11 S completed on 28 October. The well was drilled with the Deepsea Bergen rig and was targeting the Middle Jurassic Iris discovery. The well encountered a 70m (230ft) gas column in the Middle Jurassic Garn Formation and a DST flowed at a rate of 1.6 million Sm3 (56.5 mmscfpd) and 885 Sm3 (5,567 bcpd). Resources for Iris have been refined to 25 - 76 mmboe from a predrill range of 19 - 132 mmboe following DST results.

In the Barents Sea, with the completion of Equinor’s 7324/6-1 Sputnik exploration well in July, which was abandoned as a minor oil discovery, there is no current drilling in the Barents Sea. DEAL ACTIVITY NW EUROPE Neptune Energy announced on 14 October that it has agreed to acquire Edison E&P’s UK and Norway assets for an initial cash consideration of US$250 million. The deal is conditional on Energean completing its acquisition of Edison E&P, which was announced in July 2019. The deal provides 2P reserves of 30 mmboe, including the Nova and Dvalin developments in Norway and the Scott and Telford fields in the UK. The 2019 22/21c Glengorm discovery which has yet to be appraised is also included in the deal.

UNITED KINGDOM On 4 November Egdon announced that it has signed an exclusivity agreement with an unnamed company in respect of a potential farmin to its Southern North Sea licences P1929 (blocks 41/18a and 41/19a)

and P2304 (block 41/24). The initial exclusivity agreement is subject to a definitive agreement being entered into by 19 January 2020 and completing by 19 April. The unnamed party has been described by Egdon as a ‘large, internationally recognised E&P company’. The acreage is adjacent to the UK coastline and includes the 1966 Total-operated 41/18-2 Resolution Zechstein gas discovery and the 1969 Total-operated 41/24a1 gas discovery which Egdon refers to as Endeavour.

New entrant Waldorf has acquired Endeavour Energy’s UK assets via a takeover of the UK subsidiary’s business. Although no consideration was announced by either party in relation to the sale, the Deed of Accession document lists 44,250,002 shares at £1.00 per share, giving a net value of £44.25 million (US$55.94 million). The deal includes interests in four fields, Alba, Bacchus, Bittern and Enoch along with the Columbus discovery which is in the process of being developed. Production is estimated at 4,000 boepd in 2019 and net remaining reserves are in the order of 16 mmboe.

UK ONSHORE On 5 November Reabold announced it had completed a £16 million cash investment into Rathlin Energy, holder of a 66.67% interest and operator of the West Newton oil and gas discovery. Prior to the investment, Reabold held a c. 36% interest in Rathlin and following the deal has increased to c.

59% of Rathlin’s issued share capital. A further £7 million equity swap of Reabold shares for Rathlin shares has been offered to lift Reabold’s interest in Rathlin to 74.99%.

On 11 September UKOG completed the acquisition of 35% equity in the Horse Hill field licences PEDL 137 and PEDL 246 for £12 million from Magellan Petroleum (UK) Investment Holdings (Tellurian).

NORWAY Pandion has sold its 20% interest in the North Sea Duva development, including licences PL636 and PL636B (block 36/7) as part of two deals announced on 7 November. It has agreed to sell a 10% interest to PGNiG which increases its interest in the field to 30% as a result, and a 10% interest to Solveig Gas Norway, representing the company’s first upstream licence on the NCS. The field is expected on-stream late 2020 and has initial reserves of c. 85 mmboe.

Duva was set to be Pandion’s first development project on the NCS, however for both PGNiG and Solveig Gas the transactions are part of a focus on securing gas throughput at key infrastructure.

On 4 November it was announced that Zenith Energy has acquired Nordic Petroleum via an equity exchange. Nordic Petroleum was founded in 1996 as an E&P company but does not currently have any acreage on the NCS, however it does hold tax credits in Norway which Zenith is expected to utilise once the transaction is completed. The main driver for this deal was in preparation for Zenith acquiring a portfolio of assets on the NCS.

This article assesses the outlook for the Central Asia region, illustrated by three key drivers: oil supply, resource potential from unsanctioned projects and capital investments.

Figure 1 depicts oil production in the Central Asia region by country, from 2010 to 2025. Production levels have remained relatively flat since 2010, trending at around 2.9 million bbl/d. It is currently forecasted that oil supply will be maintained at a similar level up to 2025 as well. Kazakhstan is the largest oil producer in the region, contributing 65% of total oil output in 2019. Azerbaijan makes up another 26%, with Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan taking up significantly lower shares. Both players are mostly considered to be gas-producing countries with little oil reserves held.

Similarly, in 2019 investments into Tengiz FGP coupled with the start-up of infrastructure development at ACG field in Azerbaijan, will support strong capex levels in the region this year as well. Going forward, however, spending is anticipated to decline again with investments into sanctioned fields largely being sunk and development of discovery fields really picking up only from the mid-2020s. The drilling and development strategy is to prove up the resources, which have a Mid Case aggregate gross resource estimate of approximately 1,115 Bcf and through a gas to power development deliver electrical power for sale into the Kenyan national grid.

Zarara is currently planning a drilling campaign for 2017, in which it will drill two wells: namely a well to ‘twin’ the Pate 1 well which was drilled by a Shell and BP consortium in 1971 and discovered gas in the Pate field; and, assuming technical success, a long reach deviated well to further appraise the field.

The project will be developed in a number of phases, expanding as national demand for power grows and as the gas resource is proved up. Phase 1 comprises development of an early production facility requiring two wells and small gas handling and processing facilities designed to feed locally sited electricity generation modular units.

Subsequent phases will involve drilling more wells and building additional gas processing and power generation facilities to allow for increased production to meet growing electricity demand.

The well results successfully confirmed a working petroleum system in the Pate subbasin of the Lamu Basin. In addition to any further appraisal activity with respect to Pate-2 well, Zarara will now focus its further exploration activity within a Kipini play fairway that Zarara believes exists.

Technical summary: The Pate field was discovered in 1971 by a Shell and BP consortium while drilling the Pate-1 well which encountered over-pressured gascharged sands in the Basal Kipini reservoir at 4,175 metres MD. During drilling, the well kicked and flowed gas from an uncased hole section. The well was eventually brought under control after flowing for some 2-3 days, and then plugged with cement and abandoned, as the consortium’s primary objective was to discover oil.

The consortium had previously drilled Dodori-1 well in 1964, which is located 30km to the northeast of Pate-1, in Block L13.

Dodori-1 was drilled to a depth of 4,159 metres and gas shows were also present but flowed at uncommercial rates exceeding 2 mmscf/day.

Geological overview: Pate-1 is located in the NW corner of the Pate island, 70km SW of the Kenyan-Somali border and 32km NE of Lamu. The well is located approximately 30km SW of Dodori-1 and approximately 35km NE of Lamu-1. Further SW is the Kipini1 well.

Pate-1 encountered a 10 metre thick porous sand of probable Lower Eocene age at 4,175 metres MD. The well kicked and the open hole was cemented to control the well. As the primary hydrocarbon objective was oil the well was subsequently abandoned by Shell and BP. The gas-bearing sands were not logged or tested. A gas sample was recovered and assayed by Shell at its Mombasa Refinery and evidences relatively lean natural gas relatively free of noxious elements.

The gas discovery by Pate-1 critically proves a working hydrocarbon system. The objective of the appraisal and delineation phase is to assess the connected volume to that well and determine its sustainable production. Longer term, Blocks L4 and L13, covering approx. 7,810 sq km, offer co n s i d e ra b l e ad d i t i o n a l ex p l o rat i o n potential.

NIGERIA Tom Shot Bank Field In July 2016, MRI farmed-in to acquire a 48% working interest (and a substantially larger economic interest) in the Tom Shot Bank Field (“ TSB F ield”) located in shallow offshore waters near the mouth of the Calabar River close to the NigerianCameroon border.

In 2012, Mira Resources Corporation (“Mira”) a company listed on the TSX Venture Exchange, farmed into the licence and became the Technical Service Provider.

It funded the re-entry of TSB-1 well, relogged the well and completed a DST, which flowed 41 degree API crude. After operational difficulties forced abandonment of further drilling and testing operations, Mira became financially distressed and its farm-in interests were eventually terminated and reverted to AOGSL and DPL. AOGSL and DPL have formed an unincorporated joint venture with AOGSL as Operator (TSB Field JV) to appraise, develop and produce the field. MRI has acquired its 48% working interest from both parties pro rata such that, and subject to Ministerial consent, the new ownership will be as follows: AOGSL 26.5 % (Operator) DPL 25.5 % MRI 48.0 % MRI will provide technical, managerial and financial leadership to the TSB Field JV over the life of the field under the terms of a Technical and Management Support Agreement agreed between the parties. In August 2012, RPS Energy (“RPS”) prepared an independent assessment of the resources associated with the TSB Field and identified 22 mmbbls of gross 2C contingent resources from 99.8 mmbbls oil initially-in-place (“OIIP”). In February 2013, Schlumberger PetroTechnical Services was asked to provide Mira with a review of the RPS work based on the additional information available and whilst agreeing the reservoir OIIP” for the largest reservoir interval U7, overall they concluded that for the 5 main sand intervals the OIIP was 93.6 mmbbls, similar to an assessment by RPS of 99.8 mmbbls.

Technical Summary: TSB Field is a shallow offshore field located in water depths of a p p rox i m ate l y 1 5 m et res . TS B was discovered by Shell Petroleum during the 1980’s and encountered 130 metres of gross hydrocarbon pay.

The TSB Field reservoirs are Upper Miocene in age and are located at a depth between 1050-2500 metres TVDSS. The interval of interest in TSB-1 is in the Biafra Member of the Agbada Formation. The reservoir formations are the U-sandstone reservoirs.

There are approximately 13 sand reservoirs identified in the logs. These are a mixture of typical Niger Delta channels and sand bars as well as more laminated sequences towards the deeper horizons.
