Although the calendar says that spring is here the weather says otherwise. If you are usually planting out bedding this month please bear in mind that the season seems to be at least two or three weeks behind where it should be and exercise caution. Deal with weeds as soon as they appear, they will grow as fast if not faster than your plants. Tidy up your spring flowering bulbs as they finish flowering, dead head them before they can set seed but leave the foliage to feed the bulbs. Sow hardy annuals outdoors, but only when the soil is warmer. Sow beans, sweetcorn and peas, maincrop carrots, swede and turnip outdoors. Quick crops such as beetroot, lettuce, radish, rocket, spring onions, spinach and oriental greens can be planted, but be prepared to protect them if cold nights are forecast. Mow lawns regularly for easy control, feed and treat for moss and weeds. Re-seed or turf bare patches as necessary. Plant greenhouse crops such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and aubergines and keep an eye on ventilation using shading to prevent overheating. Water regularly especially during hot periods. Start to harden off summer bedding and plant dahlias for summer colour. A Word From Your MP Just the other week, I, along with my wife and children, joined the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and the local branch of the RSPB on a bird watching walk around Perton. So often, when we are strolling through one of our villages or are out in the countryside, we just do not notice the amazing variety of bird life that surrounds us. Going around with some seasoned bird watchers, I was amazed to discover the huge diversity of birds that make their home in and around Perton. We saw everything from woodpeckers to Siskins, Goosanders and a Great Crested Grebe. The walk was truly eye opening and I feel that this wildlife diversity is something that we should work hard to protect. One thing that did, though, strike me was the inconsiderate actions of a few people in not picking up their dog dirt. Indeed, I found it very puzzling that several people put their dog dirt in a bag and then, instead of putting the bag in a bin, just threw it into the trees. With this in mind, it was a real pleasure to be asked to help judge the Mind Your Step poster competition. The competition saw the students of Perton Sandown First School and Perton First School design their own posters, warning members of the public about the penalties associated with dog fouling in Perton. It is very important that we sort out this issue, as by not picking up dog dirt people expose children to the risk of infection and blindness, as well as detracting from the area. I am very much looking forward to awarding the prize, which is kindly being donated by the competition sponsor Specsavers, to the winning student, this April. Those who own dogs have a responsibility to clean up after them. We are extremely lucky to live in such a beautiful district as South Staffordshire and I think it is incredibly important that we show respect for our surroundings and do not spoil the local environment for others. Whether it is fighting dog dirt, campaigning for stricter planning laws or seeking to save our wildlife, I am keen to see that our area is protected for future generations to enjoy. I love living on Perton! I’ve just got home from a fantastic dog-walk and there are so many beautiful places to walk, right from our back door. This afternoon has been particularly lovely - the sun warming my face; a brisk breeze creating havoc with my hair(!) and producing sounds almost like the ocean as it moves through the trees; watching a bird of prey soaring; listening to a skylark singing way up above me; glimpsing a busy bumble bee; and stuff (a technical term!) flourishing everywhere! Sounds idyllic? Maybe, but believe me, not all walks are like today’s! However, even on those days I don’t have any desire to leave the house - when it’s pouring or freezing - once I’m suitably attired and out, it’s great. This daily hour or so is a breath of fresh air in so many ways - it’s time for me; away from the phone and email; from other people’s demands; time to reflect on conversations; to get my head round something; to order my thoughts ahead of a meeting; but, most importantly, it’s time simply to be... to enjoy the amazing place we live; to notice the small details which change daily; to switch off; and for me, it’s also time to pray to the creator of this wonderful world. Whether it’s walking, going to the gym, or sitting with a cuppa, we all need time for ourselves; time simply to be. Taking this time will help us to flourish. Your Vicar: Rev Julia Cody

Wild About Perton in May Bats had a hard time last year. A wet cool summer provided fewer flying insects which are the primary diet for these carnivorous flying mammals which catch around 3000 flying insects each in a night. Imagine how many insects would be flying around Perton if it wasn’t for bats. Flying Insects are caught by the high pitched squeaks the bats produce way beyond the hearing range of humans. These squeaks bounce off the insects and are heard by the bat which fix their position in the air so the bats can swoop in and catch them. The long winter has done them no favours either; with fewer insects flying as they came out of a long hibernation. If there are not enough insects around female bats which gather together in nursery roosts to give birth can’t feed their young. Perton has all the right conditions for a healthy bat population and Pipestrelle bats are regularly seen just after dusk hawking around our gardens. But there are other types of bat living in Perton which don’t frequent our gardens. The biggest British bat (Noctual) can be seen flying high above the Upper Lake early in the evening and another bat flies low over the water late at night (Daubenton’s) when it is too dark to see them with the naked eye. There is plenty to be discovered about wildlife at night in Perton including a wide range of bright and colourful moths many with exotic names such as Smoky Wainscot, Brimstone, White Ermine and the Engrailed. Wild About Perton leads a wildlife walk every first Saturday each month starting from Perton Library at 2.00 PM and an annual bat evening on 12 July starting at 9.15PM; when all these bats can be seen and heard with the help of bat detectors which convert their high pitched sounds so that we can hear them. Tamar Medical Centre gets good report! Staff at Tamar Medical Centre are celebrating after getting top marks in a patient survey! 94% of patients questioned rated the service on offer at the two-man practice which is based in Severn Drive as excellent, very good or good. The survey was commissioned by Dr Dhingra & Dr Grewal and carried out in January. It covered areas like satisfaction with opening hours, telephone access and waiting time. Commenting on the survey, Dr Dhingra & Dr Grewal used the practice newsletter to thank everyone who took the time to fill in a form. They said ‘… It’s very important for us as a practice to get patient feedback as we are always looking at ways of improving our services. What is especially pleasing is that in every category, Tamar Medical Centre scored way above the national average’. Details of the survey and the results are available either at the practice or online by logging onto www.tamarmedicalcentre.co.uk Following the survey, the findings were discussed at a recent meeting of the practice’s Patient Participation Group and an action plan drawn up. The PPG meets every three months and new members are always welcome. The next meeting will be held at the practice on Wednesday 19th June 2013 at 6.00pm. For more information, contact the practice on 01902 755053. The list at the practice is still open for new patients. Anyone interested in registering can find out more by looking at the website or calling reception.

Tips from Your Local PGA Pro At Perton Park Golf Club Add a little bit of life into your iron shots. This week I am going to talk about getting some extra distance with your iron shots. The Problem YOU’RE hitting 6-irons into greens when your buddies are hitting 7- and 9-irons from the same distance. The Solution Simple: speed. Adding extra miles per hour to your swing is the only thing that’s going to allow you to hit each of your irons farther. Most amateur’s think of speed as something they generate from the top, but that’s a recipe for almost every bad shot you can imagine. The secret is to maximize the fastest part of your swing, and that comes after you strike the ball. Copy the release positions here and you’ll learn to accelerate through the ball and into your follow-through, making your impact faster and adding yards to your irons. CENTERED HEAD It’s important that your keep your head centred over the impact area. This allows you to make your swing as wide as possible on the target side of the ball (just like you should on your backswing). If your head moves in front of the ball, then you’re limiting the radius of your through-swing and robbing your swing of crucial miles per hour of speed. LEVEL AND STEP Swing into your release with level hips (or as close to level as possible) and steep shoulders. Notice how much lower the right shoulder is compared to the left — that’s evidence of my right shoulder working under my chin, not in front of it. This right-shoulder-under move allows you to move your club at a right angle to your spine, which is the fastest route possible. RIGHT-HAND SLAP Notice how far the club head has travelled from impact to its position in the release, but how the hands have only moved a few inches. The difference between these two distances is what makes your release the fastest part of your swing. You can achieve this hidden speed by giving the ball a right-hand “slap” through impact, and continuing the slap in your release so that your right arm gets very long with the club as far away from your head as possible. Give this a try next time you are down the Range. Why not book a distance fitting session using the latest technology at Perton Golf Club. Know exactly how far your clubs go! Call 07976894363 to book.
