Welcome to Ollie’s Bar: A tribute to a racing legend
You may recall back in December last year, we announced the Heritage Stand would be renamed as The Damien Oliver Stand to honour Perth born and raised champion jockey, Damien Oliver, also known as the ‘GOAT’ or the Greatest of all Time. We also shared our plans to rename The Heritage Bar as ‘Ollie’s Bar’ in time for the upcoming Ascot Carnival season. We are delighted to announce the refit is complete and Ollie’s Bar will officially open its doors on Unite Resourcing Opening Day, Saturday October 12.
We are excited to be able to showcase some amazing memorabilia from Oliver’s illustrious career, which spanned five decades and featured a host of remarkable achievements. Don’t take our word for it - come along and experience Ascot’s newest venue for 2024 and enjoy all Ollie’s Bar has to offer!
• Newly themed ‘Ollie’s Bar’ with brand new furnishings and décor (as well as new AC!)
• Wall-articles from the 1990s up until Oliver’s last Australian rides at Ascot on Gold Rush Day 2023
• Trophies and memorabilia, including the 2024 Western Australian of the Year Award (Ch7 Sporting Category)
Beautifully framed triumphant racing moments
• Gold Rush Corner – with custom-designed wall mural honouring the GOAT’s final Australian race win on MUNHAMEK 16 December 2023
Honour Board showcasing all 129 of Oliver’s Group 1 wins
• Dedicated rotational digital display of all 129 Group 1 wins
Display of family-owned photos and racing memories, dating back decades
• Exclusive merchandise for sale
PERTH RACING IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT THIS ASCOT RACING CARNIVAL SEASON WILL BE LIVE-STREAMED ON THE SEVEN NETWORK.
A new deal for the showcasing of WA thoroughbred racing was made between Seven Network and Racing WA, where Ascot Racing Carnival is coming to free-to-air as part of Channel 7’s already world-class racing coverage, which spans 52 weekends of the year.
Colin Brown, Chair of Perth Racing commented: “Perth Racing is proud to be a part of the new, multi-year partnership with Seven Network, which will showcase Western Australian thoroughbred racing live and free across the country. The collaboration between Racing WA, Perth Racing and the Western Australian Provincial Thoroughbred Racing Association played a significant part in making this possible, and we look forward to seeing our racing become part of Channel 7’s extensive existing coverage.”
CEO Welcome
Welcome to Fasttrack Magazine, your guide to the upcoming Ascot Racing Carnival.
Welcome to the 2024/5 edition of Fasttrack Magazine and thank you to all of you, as always, for your continuing support of Perth Racing.
It was an unbelievable season of ‘firsts’ and ‘lasts’ at Ascot last year – the first $1m TABtouch Perth Cup took place on New Year’s Day and provided a thrilling finish with favourite CASINO SEVENTEEN just holding off the late lunge of the ultra-game Kalgoorlie Cup winner, BE OPTIMISTIC.
DOM TO SHOOT provided jockey JJ Noske and father-son training partnership of Sean and Jake Casey with their first Group 1 victory, following his last-gasp victory over the eastern states superstar ZAAKI, under champion hoop James McDonald. The Furphy-Railway Stakes provided yet another first – this time for Neville Parnham, who thanks to the efforts of BUSTLER, ridden by Steven Parnham, secured a maiden victory in WA Racing’s flagship Group 1 event, thus completing the full set of WA feature race victories.
The Crown Perth Winterbottom went the way of OVERPASS, who confirmed his love affair with Ascot with a dominant victory over star WA three-year-olds RIPCORD and OSCAR’S FORTUNE.
However, the highlight of The Pinnacles has to be the last Australian ride of the legendary Damien Oliver. Ollie had suffered a frustrating spring in WA; winnerless since the start of the carnival, pursued everywhere he went by a documentary film crew and feeling the pressure of his
final day in the saddle, the greatest of all time rode a treble from his final three rides, culminating in the victory of MUNHAMEK in the $1.5m Damien Oliver Gold Rush, accompanied by the perfect call from Darren McCauley.
Returning to the theme of ‘firsts’ – Ascot hosted the first $5m race in its history – the Kia Quokka. Once again, in a replica of the 2023 finish, OVERPASS held off the late challenge of WA’s darling AMELIA’S JEWEL and the Ascot Mounting Yard was awash with cowboy hats, surrounding the ebullient Bjorn Baker.
Perth Racing will once again be partnering with Racing WA to try and entice the very best horses, jockeys and trainers in Australia across the Nullarbor to challenge for our feature races across The Pinnacles 2024 and through to the Perth Cup 2025 – and we hope to welcome back names like Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, Bjorn Baker, Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald, Ciaron Maher, Chris Waller, James Cummings, Jamie Kah, James McDonald, Craig Williams, Blake Shinn – and many more.
Opening Day at Ascot will see the official renaming of the Damien Oliver Stand and the unveiling of Ollie’s Bar, which features memorabilia from throughout his career on display to the race-going public.
All of us at Perth Racing look forward to welcoming you back to Ascot and wish you an enjoyable and successful season.

JULIO SANTARELLI | RACING WA
SEPTEMBER BORN
1 2
We’ve only seen this son of Playing God race just the once, but in his cameo performance at Belmont in June before being tipped out by trainer, Neville Parnham, showed that he’s a horse with enormous upside. On debut he sat outside of the leader before bolting clear in the straight to win by a dominant two lengths. He will follow a similar 3YO path to his sister Kay Cee and if he can mirror her career success, which included a Group 1 triumph in the Northerly Stakes (1800m), then known as the Kingston Town Classic, the Parnham stable are in for an exciting ride.
WESTERN EMPIRE
No one knows Western Empire any better than Grant and Alana Williams, reaching peak success in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) and there were no more happier trainers when the Iffraaj gelding returned to their stable after a failed stint in Melbourne. He made a spectacular hometown return to win dual Group 3 races: the Northam Stakes (1300m) and Belmont Sprint (1400m) in the winter. In a reset, the seven-year-old will likely target just two races at the Pinnacles: the Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) and Gold Rush (1400m), with Grant Williams believing he is elite fresh and the 1200 to 1400m metre trips are right up his alley at this time of his career.
KESHI BOOM
HORCRUX
GLASGOW LASS
A minor injury setback forced Glasgow Lass to miss feature two-year-old races in the autumn, but she appears well-placed to make amends in major three-year-old sprint races at the Pinnacles. In four visits to trials and two on race day, the Alabama Express filly holds a blemish free record and has yet to be beaten. Trainer Mitchell Pateman says she’s a beautiful type of horse with above average talent and the motor to match it.
3 5
Co trainer Grant Williams says if Keshi Boom is anywhere near her best she’ll be in the hunt for Group 1 glory in December. Williams is hoping to rekindle Keshi Boom’s maiden campaign that proved she was above average with excellent wins in her first four starts, reaching the top with stakes success in the Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m) and Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m). She had one hit out in a ratings race in the winter when things didn’t go according to plan, but Williams believes she had genuine reasons with minor feet issues, but after a good break she is back on track and a race like the Railway Stakes looks a suitable target.
It’s a small sample size, but the debut win of Horcrux was enough for trainer Simon Miller to think he had a Rommell gelding that had a bright future in front of him. In his only start to date, Horcrux commenced a little slowly, but circled the field to sit outside of the leader and bolted clear in the run home, prompting Miller to declare him a proper horse. A raw and big framed horse, immaturity and timing cost Horcrux from participating in feature two-year-old races in the autumn, but a patient and conservative approach could reap dividends summer carnival time.
WIND AND THE LION
By their own admission, Wind And The Lion’s ultra impressive win on debut at Belmont in June, was far better than what father and son team of Sean and Jake Casey could have hoped for. The Written By gelding created a big impression with a professional performance, coiled behind a strong tempo for jockey, Chris Parnham and when he saw daylight he charged through between runners and scored by an emphatic three length margin. He teased with a couple of nice trials leading in and delivered when it counted most on race day. A sharp winning performance at his only race start and there was plenty to like about the way he went about it first-up.

Jockey Josh Parr positioned Overpass just outside the leader before surging down the center of the Ascot track for a decisive win.
