MYALLA | MAKURU 2026

Noongar Seasons The Noongar people of Western Australia have six seasons: Birak, Bunuru, Djeran, Makuru, Djilba, and Kambarang. These seasons are marked by changes in the environment, such as the flowering of plants, hibernation of reptiles, and moulting of swans.

This edition of the Myalla Magazine is being distributed during the season of Makuru, during June and July. Makuru is the season of the first rains and cold fronts, a time of renewal through water and quiet strengthening of boodja (land). Its reflective and restorative energy mirrors the theme of this edition: resilience, connection and community.

Steady guardians among us It feels fitting that this edition honours Perth College Old Girls who have chosen to serve in our Australian Defence Force.

Service is not always visible. It does not always announce itself. Often, it is steady, structured, committed. It asks for discipline before recognition or responsibility before comfort. And much like winter itself, it demands resilience beneath wide and sometimes uncertain skies.

A few months ago, many of us paused at dawn on ANZAC Day standing in silence as the Last Post carried across cool morning air. It is a national moment of remembrance, but also one of recognition: recognition of those who have served, those who continue to serve, and the families who stand quietly beside them. This edition sits gently within that space of reflection.

The women whose stories fill these pages have served — and continue to serve — in the Royal Australian Air Force, the Royal Australian Navy, and across the broader Defence community. Their roles differ. Their decades differ. Their pathways into uniform differ.

Yet what connects them is a sense of camaraderie.

Reading their reflections, I was struck not by medals or rank, but by language of trust, preparation, responsibility and connection. They speak of leadership learned gradually, although sometimes the hard way, and of the deep satisfaction that comes from enabling others to do their job safely and well.

It is impossible not to see the threads that trace back to Perth College.

Courage. Capability. Integrity. Service.

These are not abstract words. They are lived values.

Each speaks of belonging. Not belonging in the simple sense of fitting in, but belonging to something greater than themselves.

What also stands out is the diversity of pathways represented here. Not every woman stepped directly from school into a linear career in Defence.

Some pursued sport at elite levels. Some changed direction later in life. Some returned to study. Some entered service after seasons of searching. Their journeys remind us that leadership is developmental.

It is shaped by experience, recalibration and quiet persistence.

In many ways, this edition expands our understanding of what service looks like.

It is not only combat or ceremony. It is logistics and planning. It is relationship-building with coalition partners. It is maintaining aircraft. It is navigating at sea. It is mentoring younger personnel. It is standing steady in complex environments so that others may operate with confidence.

Under southern skies whether over ocean, desert or airfield, these women carry with them the same foundational strength first nurtured within the grounds of Perth College.

The Noongar season of Makuru teaches us that strength does not always roar. Sometimes it steadies.

Sometimes it anchors. Sometimes it stands quietly in the storm.

As you read these stories, I invite you to notice not only the uniforms, but the humanity within them. Notice the shared threads of community, teamwork and integrity.

Notice how deeply the values of a PC education continue to echo across decades and disciplines.

May this edition honour the women among us who have stood, and continue to stand, steady under southern skies.

OLD GIRLS’ ASSOCIATION

AGM update Our collective commitment ensures the OGA remains connected and firmly focused on shaping a strong and sustainable future.

The Perth College Old Girls’ Association gathered in March 2026 for its Annual General Meeting, marking Carolyn Bright’s first year as President and a year of steady progress in strengthening connections between Old Girls and the School.

The Association acknowledged the guidance of past President Stephanie Fullarton, thanked Principal Sarah McGarry and the many volunteers and champions who sustain community life, and also celebrated strong engagement across the alumni network.

Two editions of Myalla were published, OGA Netball continued to thrive and the 2025 Ladies Long Lunch achieved record attendance. Supporting current and future students remained central to the OGA’s mission, with the Sisters’ Memorial Bursary and the expanded OGA Heritage Scholarship awarded in 2026, alongside continued investment in leadership initiatives and preparations for the Chapel Centenary.

The OGA continues to work in close partnership with the Perth College Foundation and School Council to ensure strong alignment across community, philanthropy and governance.

A shared focus on scholarship sustainability, future capital priorities and long-term planning underpins preparations for the School’s 125th anniversary in 2027 and other key milestones ahead. Strategic planning, campus master planning and enrolment initiatives remain central to this collaborative work, alongside progress toward formalising a Memorandum of Understanding for Myalla House to safeguard the OGA’s longstanding investment and clarify its future stewardship.

President’s report Service is not defined by circumstance, but by commitment. As we recognise Old Girls who have served in the Australian Defence Force, we are reminded of the many ways service continues to strengthen and sustain our Perth College community.

I have found myself reflecting on the many forms service takes within our community.

While the women featured in this edition have served our nation in uniform, service also lives quietly within our Old Girls’ Association, in the champions who organise reunions, in committee members who volunteer their time, in donors who invest in scholarships, and in those who simply show up to remain connected.

This past year has been one of steady progress for the OGA. We have continued to strengthen opportunities for connection across generations; from welcoming our newest Year 12 graduates into the Old Girls Association, to supporting Young Old Girls through leadership programs, to awarding bursaries and scholarships that ensure the next generation of PC students can thrive.

We farewelled Caroline Risah with deep gratitude for her years of service and welcomed Donna Carter into the Alumni Coordinator role, bringing fresh energy to our community engagement. Our events calendar continues to grow, with record attendance at the Ladies Long Lunch and strong momentum behind OGA Netball - both reminders that connection can be built in many different ways.

Looking ahead, we are preparing for significant milestones in 2027: the Chapel Centenary and the School’s 125th anniversary. These celebrations will not only honour our heritage, but also shape our future. The OGA remains committed to stewarding our investments responsibly and ensuring that Myalla House and our scholarships continue to serve Old Girls for generations to come.

Perth College has always been a place where leadership is nurtured and service is valued.

Whether in defence of our country, in leadership of our community, or in quiet support behind the scenes, Old Girls continue to embody these values in powerful ways.

Thank you for being part of this enduring community.

OGA CONNECTIONS

Celebrating connection at our Heritage Breakfast The Heritage Breakfast is a reminder that Perth College connects past, present and future in one enduring community. Heritage is not simply remembered — it is lived across generations.

On Thursday, 26 February 2026, our OGA committee hosted the annual Heritage Breakfast at Excelsior House. It was a wonderful morning of connection and celebration at this year’s OGA Heritage Breakfast, where families gathered to honour their shared Perth College story. This year we had 110 students, parents and grandparents attend the event.

Students sat alongside parents and grandparents who once walked the same corridors, wore the navy-blue uniform and boater, and built their own memories within the College grounds. The event was a special reminder that the Perth College journey does not end at graduation; it continues across generations.

A highlight of the morning was the presentation of the Camellia Pin to students with a generational link to the school. The camellia, long associated with Perth College, symbolises loyalty, grace and quiet strength.

A favourite flower of Sister Rosalie, who admired the camellia bushes from her office window, it remains a meaningful emblem of the College’s heritage. The pin serves as a small but significant symbol, honouring the roots that brought these students to Perth College and the legacy they now carry forward.

The Heritage Breakfast continues to be a treasured occasion, celebrating not only history, but the living tradition of connection, pride and belonging that defines the Perth College community.

OGA CONNECTIONS

Welcoming our newest Old Girls It’s the beginning of their next chapter as Old Girls, and a lifelong connection to their community.

On 5 December 2025, over 40 Year 12 students attended the OGA Coffee Morning and Myola event — their first official Old Girls’ gathering. It was a pleasure to welcome our newest Old Girls and provide an opportunity to reconnect following exams and the conclusion of their school journey.

The morning offered a relaxed space for classmates to reflect on their final weeks at Perth College, share plans for the year ahead, and collect their final Myola as students.

The event marked an important transition point — from student to alumna — and served as a gentle introduction to the lifelong community that awaits them beyond graduation. Committee members enjoyed speaking with the graduates about future study, travel and career aspirations, while sharing how the OGA supports connection, networking and engagement long after school years have ended.

Becoming an Old Girl is not simply a title; it represents ongoing belonging. Whether through reunions, mentoring opportunities, professional networking or social events, the OGA looks forward to supporting this cohort as they begin their next chapter.

YOUNG OLD GIRLS

Reporting from the frontlines Courage isn’t the absence of fear - it’s doing it anyway.

When 2010 Leaver Jasmin Dyer contacted the School to say she would be visiting Perth in early March and offered her time as a guest speaker, little did she expect her trip would soon become a ‘working holiday’.

Now a Senior Deployable Producer with the BBC, Jasmin embraced a full program during her visit. She began with the Year 10 Media Studies class, sharing insights into her career and offering practical advice on student productions, before touring the campus and reconnecting with former staff, including Costume Coordinator Krystal Meek. She also engaged in a Q&A session with Year 11 and 12 Politics and History students, where she spoke candidly about reporting from some of the world’s most complex and challenging environments.

Jasmin concluded the day as guest speaker at the Senior School Harmony Week Assembly, where she spoke on resilience, persistence and courage. Her address appears in full below: “It is lovely to be here today, 16 years after I last stood on this stage as Dorothy in the Senior School musical. I’m Jasmin and I am now a senior foreign news journalist for the BBC. I specialise in hostile environments so war zones, conflicts, environmental disasters in places like Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen and Turkey.

A few months ago - I was on my second trip to Haiti - one of the most dangerous places I’ve ever worked. Its capital city is now 90% controlled by armed gangs who routinely kidnap foreigners for ransom. Commercial flights to the capital city are non-existent, so we arrive on a UN military helicopter that lands in a sniperprotected field.

The engine is left running. You jump out and run to a waiting bus while the helicopter immediately lifts back into the sky. We stayed in a secure compound, protected 24/7 by armed guards. We can only move around the city in bullet-proof 4WDs. The risks we take as journalists are tightly controlled, and calculated, but that doesn’t mean we necessarily feel safe or that we don’t feel scared.

My job choice has surprised me as much as it has my friends and family. But careers are usually not linear, and one lesson I’ve learnt and held onto throughout my profession is to say yes even when others may tell you no.

Unfortunately, girls, you will always face rejection - personally and professionally, but what matters is how you channel that into your next move.

I applied to do a Master’s degree in TV Journalism, which I loved. I locked in and, after a mix of hard work and persistence, I managed to get a three-week internship at the BBC. Once I had one foot in the door, I said yes to anything and everything and worked tirelessly for three years as a freelancer before they rewarded me with a permanent staff contract.

And so, I went from performing stories to telling real ones. Our reporting in Haiti was last year nominated for an Emmy. We walked a glamorous red carpet in Times Square, sipped champagne amongst people I had admired since I was a kid and took our seats in the plush auditorium.

And we didn’t win.

I’d love to stand here and tell you that that rejection didn’t sting, but of course it did.

The difference was this time it didn’t make me feel smaller, it made me hungrier to succeed.

The funny thing about success is that it’s not actually a destination, it’s all about the road you take to get there. And believe me, the goalposts will shift along the way.

The greatest privilege of my job is seeing with my own eyes what will later be broadcast around the world. Meeting people I would never ordinarily have met. Not celebrities or powerful politicians but a mum in Israel, campaigning for her son who was held hostage

by Hamas in Gaza. The olive grower in Palestine, whose land was being illegally and violently occupied by Israeli settlers.

A young girl in Haiti, who had been held captive for weeks and raped by the gangs. An elderly man in Turkey, who we found sitting on his driveway, his home in ruins behind him after the devastating earthquake. People everywhere at their core want safety, peace, security. It is usually factors outside of your control that determine how keenly you wish for those things.

A UK politician called Jo Cox once said ‘we have far more in common, than that which divides us’. And I think about her and what she said a lot. In 2016, Jo was murdered outside her local library by an extremist who targeted her because he disagreed with her views.

Harmony Week is about celebrating our differences and recognising our shared humanity.

And I have seen first-hand what it looks like when this is forgotten, or ignored. So, I urge you guys to find beauty in the things that make you different and to be curious about people and places you might not immediately understand.

I am still the girl who didn’t get into Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). The journalist who didn’t win the Emmy. But I wouldn’t be here talking to you today if I just decided to give up.

Girls, you will doubt yourselves.

You will face rejection. You will feel like an imposter. But that doesn’t mean you don’t belong in the room. Courage isn’t the absence of fear - it’s doing it anyway.”

CENTENARIAN NEWS

Once a PC girl, always a PC girl When Perth College’s Head of Performing Arts, Jane Artelaris, was asked if some Perth College students might be able to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ on video for Old Girl, Sonia Grant, on her 101st birthday, she didn’t hesitate.

Jane arranged an enormous rendition with the Perth College and Aquinas College Combined Choir, which the staff at the Maurice Zeffert Aged Care Home reported that Sonia had joyously watched repeatedly.

OGA Vice-President and close family friend Linda Hyland recalled that Sonia was a student at Perth College during the Second World War, when boarders were relocated for safety while parts of the Perth campus became the Command Headquarters for Lieutenant General Gordon Bennett.

Despite the upheaval of those years, her memories remained vivid and detailed. When she later visited the School and contributed a short piece for Myalla, she was as sharp as ever, with a wonderful sense of humour and a remarkable recollection of her life and times.

When Sonia began her career with the ABC in 1942, she worked in the record libraries during the wartime years.

In a recent interview with ABC Radio Perth, she had reflected fondly on her early role, recalling the disciplined routines of studio life, the distinctive navy and white uniform worn by staff, and the careful handling and delivery of records for broadcast. She had warmly spoken of the popular Hospital Half Hour program, an early form of listener-request radio that brought comfort and connection to patients through music and conversation.

Sonia passed away peacefully in March 2026.

OGA Vice-President Linda Hyland attended her funeral, where both Perth College and Kobeelya were fondly acknowledged - a testament to the lasting impact of her connection to the School.

CAPABLE, COURAGEOUS AND CARING

Women in Service There is a quiet strength embodied by many women currently serving in the Australian Defence Force (ADF). It is not always visible in uniformed ceremony or captured in recruitment campaigns.

More often, it is expressed in preparation rooms before dawn, in briefing notes that determine flight readiness, in decisions made calmly under pressure, and in the steady cultivation of trust across teams and nations.

Flight Lieutenant Fiona Young (1996 Leaver) represents this strength with clarity and substance. Nearly three decades after graduating from Perth College, she now serves in fast jet operations within the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) - a role positioned at the operational edge of Australia’s sovereign air capability. Her journey has not followed a straight line. Instead, it reflects a powerful and deeply human leadership arc: belonging, searching, letting go, service, enabling, integrity and legacy.

Her story resonates strongly within the Perth College Old Girls community, not because it is seamless, but because it’s developmental. It reminds us that leadership matures over time, and that purpose is often found through persistence rather than prediction.

At PC, Fiona was immersed in school life. She was a Sports Captain, committed teammate and active participant across hockey, athletics, swimming, drama and music.

She was not drawn to leadership for its visibility, but for its contribution. “I wasn’t overly keen to be out the front,” she reflects.

“But I loved being useful within the team.”

This distinction is significant.

Even as a student her instinct was connective, where influence mattered more than attention, and contribution mattered more than credit.

The values that defined PC life of integrity, courage, cooperation and community were not abstract principles. They were lived daily through shared effort. Fiona describes her PC days as a period of broad participation and encouragement.

Teachers and peers expected engagement, and her parents reinforced a simple but powerful standard: just do your best.

Those foundations of belonging and accountability would continue becoming central in her life.

Aviation was also part of her early landscape. Her father worked in the industry. An aunt served in the Air Force. As a teenager, she recalls watching Top Gun and imagining what it might be like to fly. In Year 12, curiosity led her to walk into a Defence recruiting office in Perth.

“It felt overwhelming,” she admits.

“I didn’t think I knew enough.”

She walked away. But the seed had been planted.

If Fiona’s school years were structured, her early adulthood was exploratory. These were not idle years. They were formative in ways that would later prove essential.

She commenced university twice navigating fields including medicine and science before later completing a postgraduate qualification. She worked in aviation business roles alongside her father.

She also built a serious and sustained career in elite hockey, competing at a high level for many years; Elite sport cultivated resilience, discipline and an acute understanding of team dynamics.

It reinforced that performance is rarely individual; it is systemdependent - meaning preparation, communication and trust determine outcomes.

Sport also provided structure which is something Fiona recognises in hindsight as central to her sense of identity. “I’m a little lost without a team,” she notes candidly.

When her competitive hockey career concluded, she felt that loss acutely. The rhythm of training, competition and collective striving had shaped her for years. Without it, something was missing.

There were periods of financial strain. Moments of recalibration.

Seasons of comparison, where she measured her progress against peers who appeared more settled.

Like many high-achieving women of her generation, she experienced the tension between expectation and exploration.

“Young Fiona might be a little concerned about how many turns I’ve taken,” Fiona says of her younger self, “...but happy that I got through the challenges.”

In truth, these years were not detours. They built adaptability, deepened empathy, and strengthened perseverance.

More importantly they clarified what she valued most – shared purpose.

The decision to join the Royal Australian Air Force began pragmatically. A simple Reserves advertisement caught her attention during a financially uncertain period. It offered stability and opportunity.

“Leaving the profit world and changing to a job where I got to serve my country was very appealing,” she reflects. At 39, she made a decisive pivot by applying to join the Air Force as a full-time Officer.

The courage of that decision cannot be understated. Mid-career transitions require humility to begin again. They require releasing the comfort of familiarity and accepting steep learning curves.

Initial Officer training in 2019 tested those capacities immediately. One field exercise remains etched in her memory: navigating an underground cave system in complete darkness while leading her group. When her team reached what appeared to be a dead end, she felt she had failed them.

The scenario, she later learned, was intentionally designed to assess resolve and composure.

Her persistence and leadership under uncertainty were noticed and commended. Her earlier life through elite sport, Outward Bound experiences during school, and navigating academic pivots, all had quietly prepared her precisely for this moment.

Today, Flight Lieutenant Young serves in fast jet operations.

While she is not a pilot, her role is mission-critical. She prepares operational products that enable aircrew to fly safely and effectively.

“I am one of the many enablers behind the scenes that get the aircrew what they need to fly the jet.”

She describes walking into operations rooms before a flight, aircrew waiting, aircraft visible on the flight line beyond the window. The tangible proximity of capability where millions of dollars of defence assets are poised for flight, reinforcing the gravity of her responsibility.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of something much bigger than myself.” she says.

Her contributions have intersected with significant national milestones. In 2024, she was involved in preparations surrounding the return of the final nine of Australia’s 72 F35A Lightning II aircraft from the USA, therefore completing the nation’s planned fleet acquisition.

The moment symbolised both technological advancement and long-term strategic investment.

If there is a defining thread in Fiona’s leadership philosophy, it is this: effective leadership is developmental, not declarative.

The ADF’s structured chain of command suits her team-oriented instincts. Clarity of role and responsibility creates psychological safety. Yet within that structure, she leads with nuance.

“Knowledge gives you authority,” she explains.

“But being a know-it-all is not the way.”

She is deliberate about how information is shared, by acknowledging different individuals requiring different levels of detail and autonomy. In her view, adjusting communication styles to suit the audience is a defined essential leadership skill.

Contributing at the operational edge

In 2025, she undertook a six-month overseas deployment. There, her work extended beyond operational precision to diplomatic and relational leadership. She maintained high-level relationships with host nations, coalition forces, diplomatic representatives and contracted industry partners. For her efforts, she received a Command Commendation.

She also places significant value on vulnerability and transparency.

She notes confidence has grown over time, particularly when her organisational skills are recognised by peers.

Her development has been shaped by a wide array of influences: from parents who modelled consistency; siblings who fostered healthy competition; coaches who demanded resilience; business mentors who demonstrated strategic thinking; and senior officers who embodied calm authority.

Some leaders taught her what to emulate, while others taught her what to avoid.

One small but memorable moment remains formative: a senior officer offering her a lift to the gate in the rain. It was a minor gesture, but it communicated respect. Leadership, she believes, is revealed in those quiet interactions.

Representation of women in the ADF has evolved considerably over recent decades. Fiona’s perspective is both pragmatic and grounded.

“It feels very equal from my point of view,” she says. “If you’re good enough to be in the role, it doesn’t matter what gender you are.”

She acknowledges the inspiration of meeting high-ranking female officers and fighter pilots as visible symbols of expanded opportunity.

Yet her emphasis remains firmly on competence.

Given this, the annual ANZAC Day commemorations hold a particular meaning for Fiona. As dawn services mark remembrance across the nation, she reflects on her great-grandfather’s service in the First World War and the loss of his two brothers. The generational thread of service is not abstract; it is familial. “I am very proud to be one of them.”

When asked what legacy she hopes to leave, Fiona does not speak of rank or accolades. She states: “Unwavering integrity, courageous leadership, excellence, and lifting others.”

It is a succinct articulation of leadership.

For young women considering Defence pathways, her message is clear: capability, resilience and preparation matter most.

Approaching her 30-year Perth College reunion, Fiona considers her path with gratitude rather than regret. “I’m pleased to have found a career and lifestyle that suits me, even if it was later than I expected.”

It is iterative. It matures through belonging, challenge, recalibration and recommitment. In a world often drawn to spotlight roles, her career reminds us that it is a story of connection, of growth, of choosing service... and then choosing every day to lead with integrity.

CAPABLE, COURAGEOUS AND CARING

Adventurous RAAF career Parachuting solo, steering a jet, contracting, and VIP Coordinator: A career in the RAAF brought this Old Girl a life of adventure.

Meeting a Top Gun pilot, parachuting solo, and being winched down from a helicopter are just some of the stories Old Girl Sherry (Carter) Huggins (1989 Leaver) has of her time working for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).

Sherry didn’t want to follow in the footsteps of most of her classmates and g o on to university. Instead, she looked to her eldest sister Kylie (Carter) Freeman, who had already joined the RAAF, and whom to Sherry, it sounded like an awful lot of fun. Since joining the Defence Force, Sherry hasn’t looked back.

She joined as a Supply Clerk for ten years, and while working for the RAAF she met her now-husband.

“Being in the RAAF offered many opportunities for travel and undertaking different courses for working at the aircraft squadrons and being deployed on operations,” said Sherry.

“Whilst in the RAAF, I had postings to several cities around Australia and have seen lots of interesting types of aircraft and worked alongside international Defence force personnel.”

During this period of her career Sherry drove a fourwheel-drive, parachuted solo out of a plane, and was winched down to the ground from a helicopter.

She also steered a Learjet on a test flight, one of the fastest business planes ever built, and had many more adventures.

After Sherry had her first daughter, she took twelve months off on maternity leave before returning to work part-time as a Reservist. Three years after beginning her new role, she had her second daughter, and after maternity leave once again went back to working parttime in the Reserves.

Sherry then joined the Australian Public Services (APS), in a Department of Defence role, and worked in a variety of roles within the A PS for twelve years.

“One of the most interesting roles I had in Defence was actually as a public servant working in Navy Headquarters in Canberra as a VIP Visit and Event Coordinator. I planned visits for Chief of Navy counterparts, one of them being the Pacific Fleet Commander from Pearl Harbour (Hawaii), and he was one of the actual Navy pilots in the first Top Gun movie.”

“I was also fortunate enough to visit my daughter’s primary school via a Navy Helicopter and landing on the oval in front of them all - my girls were very popular that day! I was able to support various community engagement activities, got to play lots of sports and made many friends from all over the country, some of whom I remain in close contact with 35 years on.”

She then joined the Defence Industry as a contractor, helping with major capital acquisition projects.

Reflecting on her time in the Defence Force, Sherry states that she was resilient during a period (in the 1990s) when certain roles were only available for men.

Thankfully, she explained that these restrictions have since lifted – something she believes is “amazing for any female school leavers wanting to pursue an exciting career in the forces and to serve their country”.

Sherry believes that the discipline, integrity, and courage instilled in her while at Perth College helped her in her role in the Defence Force.

Her time at school also taught her how to work alongside and collaborate with other people, which has been integral throughout her long career.

While Sherry has many fun memories of friends at school and of a quirky chemistry teacher (Mr Watkins), loved playing sport at the house and inter-school carnivals, and always enjoyed the festive St Michael’s Day, the message she hopes to pass on to Perth College girls looking to serve Australia is to “believe in themselves”, and to “train and work to the best of their abilities”.

“Don’t feel like you need to know ‘what you want to be or do’ right out of school, as you will likely engage in various experiences and have many different roles during your career,” said Sherry.

“Don’t be afraid of failing, just try and learn from any of those challenges you may face.”

Thank you Sherry for your service to our country, and we hope it inspires current Perth College girls to also live a life of service, in whatever shape that takes for them.

She advises current students to “enjoy school while it lasts”, and to “give it all they’ve got”.

CAPABLE, COURAGEOUS AND CARING

30 Years of Service A life of service, shaped by courage and commitment.

Rather than spending the holidays before university started at home, or on the beach, or traveling, Kylie (Carter) Freeman (1986) enrolled only a few months after graduating into the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).

This major step was, according to Kylie, driven by her interest in a career with the RAAF for the chance it would give her to be of service to our country, in addition to travelling and meeting new people.

Kylie, however, was not the only one in her family to step up to the challenge.

“The willingness to serve within our family has been strong, with two of my other siblings serving time in the RAAF and Navy. That tradition continues with my eldest son now serving with the Australian Army as a Signals Corps Officer.”

Five years after joining the RAAF, Kylie felt like she needed a new challenge. So, she transferred into the Army instead.

The Army, Kylie explained, provided more opportunities that matched her interests. She finished her eighteen months of Officer Training at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, in Canberra in December 1993.

The Army proved to align with Kylie’s desire to travel and meet new people, with her selection to take part in an exchange with the British Army seeing her spend five months in Germany with a British Transport Squadron.

After spending two years in Darwin, Kylie’s passion for travel was further strengthened by her selection to

attend a year-long intensive language study program, learning Thai at the Australian Defence Force School of Languages. Kylie reflects that she had always enjoyed learning languages at Perth College, and so she found the opportunity a ‘great’ one. She has even been able to put her Thai skills to use when meeting visiting official Thai military delegations on several occasions in Australia.

In 2001, Kylie embarked on a new adventure of starting her own family. She continued to serve in the military for a number of years before she resigned in 2005, to be able to devote herself full-time to raising her four boys.

Family, and friends, have been an important part of Kylie’s life. While she left Perth in 1987 for a military life, whenever Kylie came home, she has always caught up with her old friends from Perth College.

“I have attended every reunion since. I may not see my old classmates that often, but when we do get together it is wonderful to reconnect and discover what everyone is up to.”

However, a life of service above self still called Kylie.

Five years later she returned to the Reserve Army and worked part-time in several logistic positions.

Serving in the Reserves proved a highlight of her career, providing logistic support in 2020’s Operation Bush Fire Assistance to the Defence Force and helping with the control and cleanup of the raging bushfires.

In 2024, Kylie received the National Emergency Medal for her services in Operation Bush Fire Assist.

Thirty-three years after she took the step to lead a life of service, Kylie stepped down in December 2025.

Ultimately, Kylie believes her time at Perth College played a part in her journey.

“I have fond memories of my time at PC and I believe that it set me up well for the career and life path I have chosen.”

OGA CONNECTIONS

Family Connections For one of the recent guests at the 60 Years On Reunion, there’s a very long tradition of educating the girls in the family at Perth College.

Sue (Giles) Dowling (1966) is a member of the BarrettLennard family who can trace their roots back to Edward Pomeroy Barrett-Lennard, one of the first colonial settlers in WA. Sue’s grandmother Frances (Courthope) Barrett-Lennard, better known as Dolly, was a foundation student at PC, finishing her studies in 1905.

Sue’s mother Virginia Giles (1937) was one of Dolly’s six daughters who attended PC between 1928 and 1942. A Prefect for the class of 1966, Sue was also Dux of her year, and shared the following update on her life at PC and beyond.

“I grew up on a farm at North Dandalup, south of Perth. I completed primary school at North Dandalup and then spent my high school years as a boarder at Perth College. Starting at boarding school was challenging at first, adjusting to life away from the comfort and security of home, but I soon made some friends, including Fran Dewar (now Morley) and settled in. I enjoyed the challenges of studying and learning – my favourite teacher was Mrs Ladd.”

She went on to enrol in a Bachelor of Science at UWA, taking up residence at St Catherine’s College, where university life offered a newfound sense of independence. After her first year, she discovered a strong interest in biomedical sciences and ultimately chose to complete Honours in Pharmacology over Physiology, inspired in large part by the leadership and influence of Professor Mary Lockett.

While studying at UWA, she met her future husband, fellow science student Jack Dowling, and they married in January 1971. Soon afterwards, Jack was conscripted for national service and posted to Brisbane, where she began her first role as a research assistant at the University of Queensland.

After roles in Perth and Melbourne, the family eventually returned to Perth, where their daughter Karen (1976) and son Paul (1978) were born. A posting to Canberra in 1983 prompted her to reconsider her career direction, and on returning to Perth she completed a Graduate Diploma at Curtin University before embarking on a 24-year career as a Science Librarian at Murdoch University, retiring in 2014 from a profession she found both stimulating and deeply rewarding.

Alongside career and family life, she and Jack cultivated a shared passion for orienteering from 1981 onwards, travelling widely across Australia and overseas, including remote journeys along the Canning Stock Route and to destinations such as Antarctica and southern Africa.

Now retired, they remain active volunteers in the orienteering and four-wheel driving communities, while she also dedicates time to a local dog refuge — embodying the resilience she credits to her years at Perth College.

OGA CONNECTIONS

There’s no single path to success Mustering, arm-wrestling, counselling – this Old Girl has done it all! Her path has been shaped by grit, courage and a willingness to embrace every new challenge.

Lisa Kulasalu (1984) recently contacted the OGA, asking to be kept in the loop about upcoming reunions and OGA events. It had been a ‘little while’ since Lisa had walked the halls at Beaufort Street and she was keen to reconnect with classmates and the School. When asked what had been keeping her busy over the last couple of decades, Lisa shared a quick update, noting that she has indeed had an exciting life since her school days.

After leaving PC, Lisa attended Manjimup Senior High School, where she completed half of Year 11, before going on to enrol at Bentley Technical College, where she was the youngest student at just 15 years old. A country girl at heart, she returned to the country a year later and then travelled to Halls Creek to work as a jillaroo for the mustering season.

Returning to the south-west, Lisa went on to spend the next 20 years working in orchards, progressing to the position of orchard manager. In the late 1990s, she won an international contract to work in Ireland as an orchard manager.

Since then, Lisa has worked in many areas until she started her own businesses, explaining that “PC has always been a place I hold special in my heart, and having my own business in Perth brought this to the forefront. Whenever I identified a customer with children going to PC, usually by a sticker on their car window or through casual conversation, doors have opened wide for me. Our school song, which I still sing to myself on occasions, has instilled pride, honesty and trust, which is how I still live my life today (...with head, heart and hand..)”.

Along the way, Lisa developed an interest in arm-wrestling. In 2012, she competed in the inaugural Western Australian State Arm-wrestling

Championships, where a women’s division was added to a competition event.

As a newcomer to the sport, Lisa was dominant on the table, going through without defeat to become the Women’s Over 68kg State Champion. Later that year, she took out the Australian National Title in her division. Lisa would have loved to continue on but sadly it wasn’t a drug-free sport, which didn’t make for fair competition.

Lisa returned to study as a mature-age student, deciding to enrol at Edith Cowan University (at 45 years young) to gain a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in English and writing. It took her nine years to complete whilst raising a family and running a business, and from there Lisa went on to complete a Master Of Counselling degree. She now works as a counsellor educator for Cyrenian House in Nannup.

OGA 2025 Career Accelerator Scholarship MELEVA THORN (2017)

Thanks to the generosity of the Perth College Old Girls Association, I was able to participate in the six-day long Scotch College Global: Career Accelerator Camp.

I stayed at the Scotch College Boarding House with around twenty other young people from across Australia, and we were all there to participate in a Career Accelerator Camp – a program designed to give us a head-start when entering the workforce as university graduates.

The program made use of the facilities at Scotch College, with workshops and lectures held on everything from changing technologies in the workplace, balancing your health and your career, gender discrimination, how to succeed in a job interview, to personal branding, and much, much more. Interestingly, the discussion around Artificial Intelligence and it’s role in the future of the workplace was had, reflecting on my thesis topic of the impact of changing technologies in the workplace. We also took part in other activities such as morning yoga, an evening mindfulness activity, an alumni panellist discussion, a dinner in which we learnt proper business etiquette when conducting working lunches, a mock job interview, exciting team building activities, and had professional photos taken for LinkedIn.

During the week we also had to take part in a group project – we were placed in small groups, predominantly based around our study fields or areas of experience.

I myself was placed in the law group. My group was given a question by a local Subiaco law firm and asked to pitch a solution to the issue. Over the course of only a few days, utilising help from a mentor and other professionals in the industry, we crafted a threetiered solution to the problem.

The week culminated in a sundowner, where all the groups pitched the various problems and solutions they had worked on – in areas such as accounting, to engineering, and more. We presented to important guests including members of the Perth College Old Girls Association, and also our families. The chance to celebrate the end of the program and our hard work, to network with those associated with the program in attendance, and to chat with our new friends as well as our family, were all also other important aspects of the sundowner.

While the program was challenging, particularly as someone who is more introverted, it was incredibly rewarding. I ultimately believe that growth is what happens in the space outside of your comfort zone, and I believe that the camp definitely furthered both my own personal and professional growth. One of the biggest take-aways I got from

the camp was that to succeed in the workplace, you don’t need to be ‘better’ or ‘the best’. You simply need to recognise your strengths and what makes you ‘different’ and utilise those to set you apart. As someone who has always been quite competitive, but also worried about being ‘different’, knowing that what makes you unique can be a strength if harnessed well was refreshing to hear.

Ultimately, I learnt that while entering the workforce for the first time can seem intimidating, particularly for someone who may fear that they do not tick every box, it is in fact all about being ‘different, not better’. It is in fact that which makes you unique, that will be what sets you apart from the crowd when it comes to employability, and to future success in many different endeavours.

I would like to thank the Perth College Old Girls Association for their generous support in sponsoring my place in the 2025 Scotch Global Career Accelerator Program, and hope that they will continue to be involved in the program into the future.

As an OGA Career Accelerator Scholarship recipient, I was able to attend the Scotch Global Career Accelerator Programme, which gave me real exposure to the tech industry and the confidence to back myself.

I got to work on a real client brief, learn directly from industry speakers and mentors, and build a meaningful network of people I can reach out to.

Before the programme, I knew I wanted to work in tech after graduating, but with so many roles and specialisations, I wasn’t sure where to focus. Talking to people across different areas – and hearing honest stories about their paths – helped me narrow things down and feel much more confident about the direction I want to pursue.

We also rebuilt our resumes to focus on outcomes, practised interviews, and gained invaluable insight on how to prepare for interviews.

By the end, I had a clearer niche in technology to aim for and a simple plan for building the right skills. I left with an updated resume, our project deck, a cleaner LinkedIn profile, and an interview question bank. I’m ever grateful to the OGA for making my participation possible, and to the programme team, partner companies, and speakers for their time and support.

20 Years 2006 The Class of 2006 returned to Perth College on Saturday, 23 May, to celebrate their 20-year reunion, gathering in the late afternoon for an occasion filled with laughter, nostalgia and reconnection.

As the group arrived and familiar faces came into view, it quickly became clear that the years had done little to diminish the spirit and camaraderie of this cohort. It was a relaxed evening, perfectly suited to rekindling old friendships and strengthening connections once more.

Conversations flowed effortlessly as stories were shared of careers, travels, families and life’s unexpected turns. The atmosphere was vibrant and celebratory, with cheerful chatter filling the space and laughter rising above the hum of conversation.

Guests were invited to tour some of the School’s newest facilities, including the impressive Ikey Broadfoot Multi-Purpose Building and Excelsior House.

Walking through the contemporary spaces prompted reflection on how much the campus has evolved since their time as students, while also reinforcing the enduring foundations of a Perth College education.

In a spontaneous and heartfelt moment, former Head Boarder Kirra Morton requested a tour of the boarding houses — a suggestion met with enthusiastic agreement. Fifteen former boarders eagerly revisited the spaces that had once been their home away from home, sharing stories and memories that only boarding life can create.

Principal Sarah McGarry addressed the group during the evening, acknowledging the significance of the milestone and celebrating the diverse journeys taken by the Class of 2006. She reflected on the strength of the Old Girls’ network and the lasting connection alumni continue to have with the School long after graduation.

As the reunion drew to a close, there was a shared sense of gratitude and joy among the group.

Twenty years may have passed since they walked the corridors as students, but the bonds formed at Perth College remain strong - a testament to friendships built on shared experiences, resilience and belonging.

5 Years 2020 Time certainly flew in 2025! So much so that it was the end of the year all of a sudden and we’d run out of time to hold the 5 Years On Reunion for the cohort from 2020.

And so it came to pass that 42 Old Girls from the Class of 2020 came together on a warm summer evening in March for their delayed reunion. Meeting at the Mount Lawley Bowling Club, the group enjoyed a game of lawn bowls and a glass or two of bubbles.

We loved seeing familiar faces again, catching up, and hearing what everyone has been up to over the past few years. It was a lovely, relaxed night with our year group, full of plenty of laughs. Thank you to the OGA for facilitating a fantastic evening!

40 Years 1986 On Saturday, 7 May 2026, to celebrate their 40-year reunion, 33 women gathered to reconnect and reflect.

The afternoon was filled with lively reminiscing, shared memories and plenty of stories since their school days. Conversation soon turned to the diverse and accomplished paths taken since graduation, with careers spanning research and science, farming and mining, social work and engineering, allied health and teaching — a testament to the breadth of talent within the cohort. As they caught up on life’s milestones, both professional and personal, there was a strong sense of pride in how far each had travelled, proving that the friendships forged at PC four decades ago remain as enduring as ever.

60 Years 1966 Blessed with the most glorious sunshinefilled autumn day, nineteen Old Girls from the Class of 1966 convened at Myalla House to celebrate their 60 Years On Reunion.

With several attendees coming down from the Hills and further afield – Bindoon, Bridgetown, Corrigin and York – mere distance was not going to stop this group from attending this milestone reunion.

Over lunch, there were was much sharing of how retirements are being spent, news of accomplishments of children and grandchildren as well as memories of their time at PC in the 1960s – including hot vegemite rolls brought out to students by the Sisters, trams that once ran along Beaufort Street and nicknames at school (including yours, Bubble!).

A big thanks to Penny Hearn and Helen (Roe) Petrides for helping to marshal the troops for a fabulous afternoon that no-one really wanted to leave. Also, a big shout out to those who weren’t able to attend, you were still in our thoughts and reminiscing on the day.

One of those who couldn’t get across to Perth was June Ward, who shared the update below: “I continue to reside in Rye on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria and enjoy the daily coffee run, lots of gardening & an annual getaway to some part of Australia. Following the death of my partner several years ago, I needed a good focus……so, my plan…. to cycle the Nullarbor. It’s now 9 years almost to the day (28th April), since I left Perth to cycle home. The journey took me 6 weeks. I camped along the road until halfway to Cocklebiddy when overnight I was drenched! No fun packing up a wet tent, so, from then on I cycled from service station to service station!

There’s lots to do and see in this country and in recent years I’ve visited Kangaroo Island, outback Queensland, 4 months away through Central and Western Australia, walked a small part of the Heysen Trail in South Australia and this year, hopefully, am planning to drive the Great Central Road from Yulara (Ayer’s Rock), to Laverton! The enclosed photo was taken in the Porongorups atop the Castle Rock Skywalk.”

I try & return to WA every couple of years to catch up with friends from farming days in Cranbrook, but also to see my sister, Carolyn and some of her family.

Similarly, I catch up with my other sister, Kerry who now lives in Montville, Queensland.

The Old Girls’ Association is excited to host reunions for classes celebrating their milestone years! We’ve got reunions coming up for the class of 1967, 1977, 1987, 1997, 2007, 2017, 2022, and 2025. These reunions take place every 10 years, as well as a special 5-year and 18-month gathering.

OGA WEDDINGS

Simona Pirone (2011) It was a beautiful day full of love and joy when Simona married Anthony Calabro (a 2010 Trinity Leaver) at Villa Howden in Tasmania on late January.

Simona and Anthony’s dream wedding would have been a Tuscan villa in Italy but, as that was not possible, they found this gorgeous venue in Tasmania which resembled a beautiful villa in Italy.

Many of Simona’s PC school friends made the trip to the Apple Isle to celebrate the happy couple’s special day. All four of the bridesmaids were PC Old Girls – Simona’s two sisters, Daniella (Pirone) Mrdja (2003) and Janelle (Pirone) Pelchen (2006), along with her best friends Sophie Pearce (2011) and Holly Crane (2011). Another 2011 Leaver, Jacqueline Baker helped to officiate the marriage.

We were married at Credaro Family Estate in Yallingup in early March, which created the most beautiful backdrop for the day.

We wanted the wedding to feel relaxed, personal, and reflective of us, and it truly came together better than we could have imagined. Being surrounded by our closest friends and family, with a long-table dinner and celebrations overlooking the vineyards, made it incredibly special, it’s a day we’ll always remember.
