As we progress through another vibrant year, our 2026 Student Leaders’ theme, Sparking Our Spirit, has come alive in classrooms, on stages and sporting fields, through service initiatives, leadership opportunities and the everyday interactions that shape our community. This theme readily reflects the energy and optimism of our students, and speaks to the importance of belonging, courage and contribution in a rapidly changing world.

This year, we have been especially proud of the way our Year 12 student leaders have embraced their responsibilities with enthusiasm, authenticity and purpose. Their leadership reminds us that influence is not defined by a badge or title, but by the positive impact we have on those around us each day. In this way, our entire Year 12 cohort plays an important role in shaping the culture, energy and sense of belonging that makes Perth College such a special place.

An important part of this year has also been the revitalisation of our Friends of PC parent group, whose renewed energy and commitment have strengthened opportunities for families to connect, contribute and celebrate school life together. We particularly acknowledge the efforts of our Boarding Liaisons, who play such a vital role in ensuring our boarding families feel welcomed, supported and deeply connected to the wider school community. Their generosity reflects the enduring spirit of belonging that has been central to our school’s story since our foundation in 1902.

We are busily preparing for our 125th anniversary in 2027 and look forward to sharing updates with our community as the year progresses.

As we honour the rich history and traditions that have shaped generations of students, we do so with a clear sense of optimism for the future. Our school continues to evolve thoughtfully and ambitiously, investing in people, programs and opportunities that will empower young women to thrive in the years ahead while remaining grounded in the values and relationships that define us.

From our Junior School Semester 1 was filled with opportunities for connection, participation and growth across the Junior School.

It is wonderful to reflect on the many experiences that have brought our students, families and staff together.

Congratulations to our Junior School Semester 1 Leaders. We are incredibly proud of the way they have stepped into their roles with confidence and commitment. Each student selected has demonstrated our values of being Capable, Courageous and Caring, both in visible leadership moments and in their everyday conduct. Their positive influence has been evident throughout the semester, and we thank them for the contribution they have made to our community.

One of the highlights of the year was our inaugural Junior School Founders Outdoor Movie Night. What began as a day of thunder, lightning and heavy rain transformed into a balmy, star-filled evening, providing the perfect setting for families to gather on rugs and picnic blankets under the open sky.

Students settled in with friends to enjoy the heartwarming Australian film Kangaroo, and there was a real buzz as the big screen lit up and the popcorn began to flow.

A sincere thank you to our dedicated Liaison Parents for coordinating this event in partnership with the Junior School. With strong attendance and joyful energy throughout the evening, it was a clear success and a wonderful new tradition in the making.

Our swimming events also showcased student growth and House spirit. The Year 3 Swimming Extravaganza provided students with the opportunity to build confidence, develop skills and enjoy success in the water, supported by enthusiastic encouragement from friends and family.

This momentum continued at the Years 4 to 6 House Swimming Carnival, where students demonstrated determination, teamwork and sportsmanship, proudly representing their Houses and cheering one another on.

It has been a rewarding semester, and I am grateful for the partnership of our families and staff as we continue to build a Junior School community that is Capable, Courageous and Caring in all that we do.

The Class of 2025 has much to celebrate. In a year marked by aspiration, perseverance and personal growth, our graduates achieved strong and stable WACE outcomes while maintaining Perth College’s proud tradition of academic excellence and 100% WACE graduation.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL

Every eligible student achieved the Western Australian Certificate of Education, reflecting both the capability of the cohort and the deep commitment of staff who walked alongside them.

The highest ATAR achieved was 99.75, a remarkable accomplishment and a testament to the depth of academic talent within the cohort.

The median ATAR of 89.375 continues the School’s consistently strong academic performance.

Particularly impressive was the strength at the very top end of achievement. 8% of students achieved an ATAR of 99+, 14% achieved 98+, and nearly one-third of the cohort achieved 95+.

Participation in the ATAR pathway remained significantly above the state average, with 67.8% of students pursuing an ATAR compared to the 2025 state average of 39.6%. This speaks to the strong academic culture and informed pathway counselling that continues to define the senior school experience.

STATEWIDE RECOGNITION

PATHWAYS WITH PURPOSE

Five ATAR courses placed within the top 15% of schools statewide: Chemistry, Literature, Mathematics Applications, Mathematics Methods and Modern History.

The Class of 2025 exemplified the strength of multiple pathways. Alongside a robust ATAR cohort, 46% of students completed a VET qualification across Years 11 and 12.

Chemistry and Modern History have now appeared in the Top Schools list for seven consecutive years, highlighting sustained excellence in curriculum, teaching and assessment.

Five students achieved Subject Certificates of Excellence: • Lily Triscari – English • Genevieve Franzen – Human Biology • Tali Wrobel – Mathematics Methods • Annika Rosman – Modern History • Caitlin Perrella – Visual Arts In total, 36.5% of students received SCSA awards, including 17 Certificates of Distinction and 20 Certificates of Merit, recognition of sustained effort across challenging senior programs.

Our graduates also demonstrated outstanding creative talent. Caitlin Perrella and Francesca Gobby were selected to exhibit their artworks at the 2026 Pulse Perspectives at AGWA. These achievements remind us that excellence at Perth College extends far beyond examination results.

Tali Wrobel, Dux of Perth College in 2025 (pictured left), has gone on to study a Bachelor of Biomedicine with an assured pathway to the Doctor of Medicine at the University of Western Australia in 2026. She shares the following words of wisdom for those following in her footsteps: “I kept motivated throughout Year 12 by breaking down big tasks into smaller steps, and by constantly seeking improvement on my understanding of concepts. Taking breaks, and spending time with others was

Year 12 is a big year, so make sure you enjoy every ‘last’ and every moment with friends.”

STRIVING FOR PERSONAL BEST Behind every statistic is a story of resilience, growth and community. At the commencement of Year 12, twelve students were identified as being at risk of not meeting WACE requirements. Through early identification, coordinated support and strong partnership with families, every one of these students graduated.

This is perhaps the most powerful measure of success: not only high achievement at the top end, but a collective commitment to ensuring every student crosses the finish line.

The Class of 2025 leaves Perth College as capable, courageous and caring young women, scholars, artists, athletes and leaders. Their achievements reinforce the strength of our academic program, the power of purposeful pathways and the enduring impact of a Perth College education.

Murdoch University Ngala Kwop Biddi Brighter Futures Scholarship recipients, Gem and Amelia, were recognised for demonstrating outstanding leadership that actively creates pathways for others.

Gem is undertaking her first year of a forensic science degree (majoring in forensic biology) this year, and hopes to work in DNA analysis or become a police crime scene investigator.

She plans to expand her community by meeting lots of new people at university, through her living village and through sport.

During her time at PC, Gem’s leadership in equity, diversity and inclusion was courageous, authentic and transformative. As Bedford House Captain and a boarding mentor, she worked intentionally to create safe, welcoming spaces where every student felt seen and valued. Gem advocated for LGBTQIA+ students, challenged stereotypes, and fostered unity among her peers, who experienced a stronger, more inclusive community because of her leadership.

“My advice for the 2026 leavers is to put themselves first. Your own wellbeing is way more important than a test or exam grade. If you aren’t focusing on your own wellbeing you wont perform as best as you could and you’ll miss out on all the fun year 12 brings you. Year 12 is also a very confusing time for many students who are unsure of what they want to do in their future, and that’s all right! You can change courses in university so easily so you are never stuck so don’t waste year 12 worrying!”

Amelia is spending the first half of this year working and travelling. She is looking forward to experiencing one of her dream destinations - the Amalfi coast before beginning her primary and physical education teaching degree in Semester 2.

Amelia’s leadership has been equally powerful, grounded in compassion and service. Amelia volunteered with Riding for the Disabled Association at Brookvalley Farm for 5 years, supporting children with diverse disabilities to build confidence, skills and independence. As a leader, advocate and role model, she helped raise awareness and funds, strengthened community partnerships, and championed inclusion at every opportunity. Her leadership reminds us that quiet dedication can change lives in profound ways.

Her advice for this year’s Year 12 students is to enjoy their last year of high school by treasuring all the memories they make with friends.

“Try to be involved with even the smallest things as you will miss having the chance to spend time with your year group each day. I also suggest you give everything a go, as this is your last chance to try something new. Last year was my first year on the IGSSA Cross Country Team. My passion allowed for me to become captain and continue to motivate and encourage girls from across years 7-12.”

Capable, courageous and caring COMMEMORATING THE EXTRAORDINARY LIFE OF PERTH COLLEGE OLD GIRL, IOLE (HARPER) BURKITT

On a hot Sunday morning in late summer, a large group gathered at the Point Walter Nurses’ memorial to commemorate the 84th anniversary of the sinking of the SS Vyner Brooke.

Among those were 5 Perth College students who bore flags and laid a wreath on behalf of the School, honouring the memory of 65 courageous nurses whose lives were lost or irreversibly changed after boarding the ill-fated SS Vyner Brooke in Singapore in 1942.

The Vyner Brooke tragedy is one of the most harrowing stories in Australian military history. For Year 12 student, Lily, the solemn service carried a deeper meaning: her great grandmother, Iole (Harper) Burkitt (1929), was one of only 24 survivors to return home more than 3 years after the ship sank, having experienced unimaginable hardships as prisoners of war (POWs). Lily (Year 12) is the youngest of 4 generations of her family to attend Perth College, carrying on the legacy Iole began.

“Iole’s story was particularly present in my childhood as I saw her as a role model for perseverance and strength.”

Lily’s reflection How present was Iole’s story in your family growing up?

Iole’s story was particularly present in my childhood as I saw her as a role model for perseverance and strength. Growing up, my family was very transparent about her story and would never shy away from any details. My mum, grandma and I (pictured on the front cover) always attend the memorial service each year which has also allowed me to learn more and more about her and the other nurses’ experiences.

Is there anything about her story that you wish more people knew?

On Radji Beach on Bangka Island, after being bombed by the Japanese and at sea for days, the nurses had no other choice than to surrender to the Japanese and become prisoners of war. However, in one of the worst acts of war crime in our history, 22 women were forced to march back into the sea, before being machine gunned. The only survivor, Vivian Bullwinkel, made it to Iole in one of the POW camps, where together and with their Australian humour, they were able to survive and live to fight for the recognition of their colleagues on that beach.

There was a play held in Perth not too long ago called ‘21 Hearts’ which depicted the sinking of the Vyner Brooke and this war crime, along with the harsh treatments they received whilst being POWs. There is also an audio recording of an interview with Iole from the Imperial War Museum website that you can hear firsthand what that period of war was like for them.

blew out the bottom of the boat – and sank within half an hour. Iole and her fellow nurses treated the wounded as best they could before abandoning ship.

12 Australian nurses died at sea that day. Iole survived 3 days in the water before making it to shore on Radji Beach, Bangka Island (just off Sumatra). Exhausted, Iole and her friend Betty Jeffery, made their way through the mangrove forests, only to be taken prisoner by Japanese soldiers. They were taken to Montok Jail, where they were reunited with Vivian Bullwinkel who had sustained a gunshot wound during a massacre that claimed the lives on many of the others who had made it to shore. Iole spent the remainder of the war in Japanese POW camps on Bangka Island and the Netherlands East Indies (now part of Indonesia).

Iole’s story Lieutenant Colonel Iole (Harper) Burkitt was born in Guildford in 1911 and was the eldest of 7 Harper sisters – all of whom attended Perth College between 1923 and 1939.

After graduating, she trained as a nurse at Perth Hospital and nursed in the country and Sydney before returning to Perth and enlisting in the Australian Army Nursing Service in 1941. In her interview with Jane Flemming for the Australian War Memorial, Iole described getting onto a ship loaded with troops and other nurses, and feeling seasick the whole way.

‘We weren’t told where we were going until we got out past Rottnest,’ she said. ‘The idea was that we might be going to the Middle East, but I don’t think anybody really bothered one way or the other. There was a job to be done.’

On arriving in Singapore, Iole worked with her fellow nurses to set up hospitals and care for patients who were mostly sick in the beginning, with casualties escalating as the Japanese army advanced. Despite her strenuous work in the casualty ward, Iole remembered going out for dinner or dancing with men they knew from the army and air force.

When Singapore fell to the Japanese, Iole was one of almost 300 passengers that boarded the SS Vyner Brooke amid panic and confusion: a vast number for a boat that usually only carried 12 passengers in addition to her crew.

The boat survived an initial attack on 13 February but sustained heavy damage from several bombs on 14 February – one of which went down the funnel and

Rations, gruelling physical work and disease claimed the lives of many of her fellow POWs. Of the 65 nurses who boarded the Vyner Brooke 3.5 years earlier, Iole, Betty and Vivian were 3 of just 24 who returned to Australia.

On returning home, Iole suffered with PTSD and frequent bouts of malaria. She travelled to visit her sisters who lived in other states, before taking a job at what is now the Hollywood Hospital where she was rostered on night shift in the psychiatric ward.

She married Dr Arthur Robert Burkitt in St Matthew’s Church in Guildford in 1947 and moved to Harvey with her husband and daughter in 1951, where she gave birth to her second daughter.

After returning to Perth, Iole went on to become a founding member of the New Era Aboriginal Fellowship, actively advocating for Indigenous Rights.

Her daughters Lee Hardman and Belinda Lewis were Perth College students in the late 1960s, with their daughters, Emma-Lee May, Rebecca Anderton and Tessa Burkitt also donning the uniform between 1986 and 2001.

Iole died In Guildford in 1998, aged 87.

When War Came to

Perth College

For many Perth College students, the Second World War was not something happening in distant places. It was part of everyday life.

military operations became a daily backdrop to lessons, sport and school activities. For almost two years, military headquarters and school life existed side by side.

As war spread across Europe and the Pacific, school life changed dramatically. Reflecting on 1940, Headmistress Mrs Russell-Smith observed that school life had become defined by “war and preparedness for war, anxiety and hope”. Staff and senior students undertook First Aid and Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) training, while fundraising and knitting for the forces became regular activities across the School community.

Former student Jennifer Gillett (1947) vividly recalled the air-raid precautions that became part of daily life. Every student carried identification, including a metal tag displaying their blood group.

Jennifer’s mother also provided an unusual piece of emergency equipment.

The threat became even more real in 1942. Following the bombing of Darwin and growing concerns for Australia’s defence, Perth College was requisitioned by the Australian military. Initially intended for use as a military hospital, the campus soon became the headquarters of the Australian Army in Western Australia under General Gordon Bennett.

Almost overnight, the familiar rhythms of school life were transformed.

Senior boarders were evacuated to Parkerville, while younger boarders relocated to the Sisters’ holiday house in Mundaring. Soldiers occupied parts of the campus and

“We were told we had to bite on something during air-raids. My mother had the answer: the extra rubber spout from our china teapot. Tape was pushed through it, and there it was, hanging around my neck. I now wore one metal tag with my blood-group on it, and a well-used rubber teapot spout. My wartime gear.”

Air-raid drills were practised regularly. Trenches were dug beside the tennis courts and students were instructed exactly how to take shelter should the sirens sound.

Jennifer remembered: “At school, a sergeant with a red moustache gave us air-raid instructions. We filed downstairs and across the path to our mutilated tennis court.

We were allocated a trench, five girls in each. Legs around the girl in front. Knees under her elbows.

Head down. Never look up. Above all, bite hard.”

Despite the uncertainty of the times, education continued. Lessons were taught, friendships flourished and students embraced opportunities to contribute to the war effort through fundraising, practical service and community support.

When the Army finally vacated the campus, the School faced the challenge of reclaiming and restoring its home. Reflecting on 1944, Mrs Russell-Smith noted: “The year 1944 gave us back our School buildings. It has been a year of some difficulty in settling in, in restoring furniture slowly, in finding equipment stored away in unlikely places.”

Gradually, Perth College returned to normal. Libraries were reestablished, school societies revived and students once again enjoyed the full experience of school life. Yet the war years left a lasting impression on all who lived through them.

Today, these memories offer a powerful reminder of the resilience of the Perth College community.

In a time marked by uncertainty and sacrifice, students, staff and Sisters adapted to extraordinary circumstances while remaining committed to learning, service and one another.

Chaplain’s Message In our busy school environment, having a dedicated Chapel and regular, timetabled services for students across the school is a spiritual gift.

The prominence of our beautiful Chapel physically at the main entrance to our campus echoes its importance in the culture of our community.

Chapel is the place where students are invited to just ‘be’. No laptops, no exercise books, no notes to be taken or tests to follow, they simply bring themselves to enjoy song, story, sacrament and silence.

The Chapel of St Michael and All Angels is fast approaching its 100th birthday and it is because of the value placed in living their faith that the school founders, the Sisters of the Church, prioritised building it just 25 years after the school began. As with all buildings as they age, the Chapel needs regular maintenance and day-to-day care but the respect with which it is used and the great nostalgia visits to it bring to Old Girls is a testament to its continued importance in our school community.

Finding a place of peace is a tonic in the hustle and bustle of school life, as it is in the wider world.

Psychologists, religious leaders and wellbeing experts agree that reflection, stillness and quiet are good for us, especially in the age of mobile telephones and constant demands on our attention.

Chapel provision goes far beyond meeting the spiritual needs of Anglican students or continuing the traditions of the Sisters, it is an offering to all members of our community to stop for a moment and take care of themselves.

We celebrate the diversity of spiritual practice and religious affiliation of our community and, although we operate through the lens of Anglicanism, and all student attend Chapel, our liturgy is invitational, not enforced. Many students will heartily join in with responses and song; they will take their turn at reading or assisting with carrying candles.

For those who struggle with those things, there is the invitation to spend the time looking within, to take a break from the academic, co- curricular or practical demands of school life and check in with themselves, reflect on the day and find some inspiration.

It is a privilege to work within this Chapel and school and share the peace this space brings to the Perth College community. I would invite you to take a moment yourself to step inside next time you are on campus and experience that peace firsthand. All are welcome in our Chapel; it is the gift of spirituality we share.

From our Boarding House The first half of 2026 has been filled with activity, connection and memorable experiences in Boarding.

From community events and recreational activities to leadership opportunities and fundraising initiatives, it has been a busy and rewarding semester for our boarders.

It was lovely to see so many families join us at the Welcome Back BBQ at the beginning of the year. The event provided a wonderful opportunity for students, parents and staff to reconnect, welcome new families and strengthen the sense of community that makes Perth College Boarding so special.

The Year 12 Ball and Year 11 Dinner Dance were highlights of the social calendar, with our boarders looking fabulous and enjoying memorable evenings with their peers.

Our Closed Weekend provided another opportunity for students to connect and have fun together. The Year 12 Leaders organised a range of activities on Friday afternoon, while Years 7 to 11 enjoyed a day at Adventure World on Saturday. Sunday included a letter-writing activity, followed by a visit to the local post box to send letters home. The weekend concluded with pool activities led by the Year 12 students, creating a wonderful sense of connection across the Boarding House.

Recreational activities throughout the semester have taken boarders ice-skating, surfing, to markets and shopping centres, through Kings Park and to events with boarders from other schools. These experiences continue to build friendships, confidence and independence while creating lasting memories.

One of the standout events of the semester was the Boarders’ Car Wash. In just three hours, students washed 82 cars and raised more than $1,200 for Shelter WA, a Perth-based organisation advocating for social and affordable housing and working to end homelessness in Western Australia.

The charity was selected by the Year 12 Executive, who are passionate about supporting those experiencing homelessness.

Many members of the public who attended were highly complementary of our boarders and the School, recognising the students’ enthusiasm, teamwork and willingness to help others. It was wonderful to see our boarders working together to make a positive difference in the wider community.

We were also delighted to welcome grandparents and special people to our Sunday Chapel service and brunch. These occasions provide a valuable opportunity to celebrate the important relationships that support and enrich the lives of our boarders.

Another highlight was hosting more than 100 Year 12 Boarding Leaders from schools across Western Australia for an evening of connection, conversation and collaboration. Students shared ideas, discussed life in boarding and explored the opportunities and challenges that come with leadership.

As we look ahead to the second half of the year, we are grateful for the energy, kindness and enthusiasm our boarders bring to the community each day. We look forward to many more opportunities to learn, connect and grow together.

The Extra Mile EVA KARALIS ON TEACHING, PERTH COLLEGE AND HER FAMILY LEGACY.

Affie and Eva Karalis are a motherdaughter duo whose deeply generous spirit has shaped the lives of countless students during their combined 88 years of service to Perth College.

In our ever-changing world, this incredible story of lifetime dedication, passion and good old fashioned hard work is nothing short of inspiring, and shows how they became an integral part of the culture that drew them to the School so many years ago.

Eva Karalis retired in November 2024 after an incredible 42-year career as a teacher – 38 years of which was spent in Perth College’s Junior School.

Wanting to be a teacher is one of her earliest childhood memories, and that sense of purpose, energy and passion for teaching hasn’t waned.

“Perth College is thriving,” she says. “Things are progressing with the times. Sure, we’ve got our heritage, but there’s also the feeling of moving forward into the next generation.”

She’s now enjoying what she calls the best of both worlds: spending time with her mum, Affie (who has recently celebrated her 90th birthday), going to Pilates or the museum and catching up with friends, while maintaining her ties with the School and its students as a relief teacher.

Eva first taught at Perth College as part of her teaching practice, before being offered a job teaching Year 7 in 1987. She was thrilled to have the opportunity to return. Over the years, she watched the school grow – first under Judith Cottier’s leadership, and later Jenny Ethell’s. The Junior School filled up, and Perth College became the place to be – both for students and for staff.

“Initially, I thought I’d give it 5 years. Maybe 7. But 5 turned into 10, 10 turned into 15 and so on – because it was just too good to leave,’ Eva explains. ‘The culture was such that no one left because they loved it so much. You can’t explain it, but when you walk into the campus, you feel connected. There’s something special about it.”

“I’ve had the privilege of working with wonderful staff, and not just teaching staff. I’m talking about grounds staff, maintenance staff, canteen staff… Everyone is just lovely and warm-hearted.”

Eva’s affiliation with Perth College began decades before she began her teaching career. She remembers exploring the grounds during school holidays while her mum, Affie, worked in the boarding house She had begun working there shortly after moving to Perth from Darwin, where Eva and her younger sister were born. Having recently migrated from Greece, Affie wanted to look for work and decided to ask at the school down the road from their house.

“She liked the uniform,” remembers Eva. “There weren’t any jobs available at the time, so the Sisters took her name and address. Three months later, they walked down to our house and knocked on the door, and asked Mum if she’d be interested in a part-time job in the kitchen.”

It didn’t take the School long to notice Affie’s remarkable work ethic and caring nature, and she balanced growing work hours with raising her young family, while studying English at night school. She became increasingly involved with the girls in the boarding house, eventually becoming the Head of Housekeeping.

“She adored the girls, and they adored her,” Eva says. “She became a mother figure to the boarders, and later a grandmother figure.”

Eva shares a memory of a girl who needed a button fixed on her uniform, capturing the warmth and care that characterised Affie’s relationships. The principal, who was speaking with Affie at the time, said that she shouldn’t be asking Affie to do that for her. But Affie must have signaled to her to come back later, asking her to bring her the uniform so she could mend it, saying “let’s keep that between us.”

“Sometimes families would say, “if Affie’s still in the boarding house, my girls are coming [to Perth College].” Mum still corresponds with the families of boarders, and they ask to meet up for coffee with her. She had an incredible effect on the School – not from seeking it, just from being genuinely herself.”

It wasn’t just the students that came to see Affie as family. Affie worked with the Sisters and 5 Perth College principals throughout her career, and each made the time to have lunch with her, just to connect, debrief or ask for her perspective.

“To this day,” says Eva,”Mum still maintains a connection with all the principals she worked with who are still living, as well as the last Sister who lives in England. She was a novice at Perth College when they worked together, and they still communicate via letters and cards. Principal Sarah McGarry, who Mum didn’t work with, still maintains a connection by sending her cards, which is really lovely.”

Today, the original boarding house kitchen where Affie spent so much of her career has been named Affie’s Café. She was made an honorary Old Girl, and was a joint recipient of the St Michael’s award in 2006.

She handed in her notice just after celebrating her 80th birthday and finished up in 2015 followed by 18 months of volunteer work, coming back every Friday to spend time with her beloved boarders.

When Affie gave her speech (without notes!) at Presentation Night in her final year, her message to the students was simple: love the job you’re doing.

When asked what advice she would like to share after all those years, Eva reflects that you can’t underestimate the power of confidence, self-belief and friendship.

“Whether it’s a student in my classroom or someone going beyond into the next stages in their life, my advice is to take chances. Be confident. Step outside your comfort zone and take that risk, because that’s how you grow with learning. You can be remarkable in whatever you do, in whatever path you choose.

You just have to believe in yourself.”

For someone who isn’t a risk taker by nature, those words of wisdom are incredibly meaningful for Eva, and something she attributes to the culture of “doing your personal best” that was emphasised by past principals Judith Cottier and Jenny Ethell, and remains central to the ethos of the School today.

“If you see somebody that’s not being nice to somebody else, be an upstander rather than a bystander. Don’t be afraid to take a stand and share your feelings. Take care of yourself, and take care of each other.”

“As time went on, that became the culture here: achieve your personal best because you can do anything. Girls can do anything. And the girls showed me that if they can do it, I should be able take that risk and step out of my comfort zone too.”

After years helping students navigate the complexities of friendship, her final piece of advice is to stand up in your relationships.

Behind the Seams BRINGING THEATRE TO LIFE WITH COSTUME COORDINATOR, KRYSTAL MEEK.

If you’ve seen a performance at Perth College during the past 20 years, you’ll be well acquainted with the incredible work of our Costume Coordinator, Krystal Meek.

Tucked away in a small studio stacked to the roof with hats, shoes and a veritable rainbow of fabric and thread, Krystal makes or adapts hundreds of costumes for Perth College performances every year, including outfitting the 90 performers in the School’s most recent production, Into the Woods.

It’s a true labour of love that begins many months before the lights go up on the first act. From an early conversation with the director, Krystal creates mood boards, sketches and technical drawings before setting off to work on the costumes themselves. The Gothic flavour of this year’s Senior Musical, Into the Woods, required her to revisit the construction skills she learned during her WAAPA degree.

The work that goes into each piece is hard to fathom.

‘Cinderella’s costume has got 4 layers – her hoop, her petticoat, her skirt and her over skirt, then a doublelayer bodice’ Krystal explains, with the fastenings and finishing on the bodice alone taking a full day.

No two productions are the same, with each musical presenting its own creative challenges. If you were in the audience, you would have noticed a standout performance by Year 12 student Sylvie as the Witch and marveled at her transformation from hideous crone into a beautiful maiden.

Although it was the most challenging to make, the witch’s costume was Krystal’s favourite. As the only quick change to happen on stage, the transition needed to be seamless. A wig was stitched into the hood of her shimmering brocade cloak, with magnets down the front to quickly reveal a pastel green dress with an overlay finished with a number of handstitched flowers.

It needed to be able to take the strength of the students pulling it and using it. She also needed to get her hair cut on stage.’

Costuming the dancers for SPIN is her favourite, but when it comes to musicals Krystal’s favourites include Legally Blonde and Betty Blue Eyes. ‘Betty Blue Eyes was lots of fun, because I love the 40s. I love coats and the gloves,’ she explains; an especially welcome change after dressing hundreds of peasants for musicals such as Fiddler on the Roof, Anastasia and Les Miserables.

Krystal creates the costumes for the Junior School musical, SPIN productions, St Michaels Day and IGSSA Dance – not to mention the hair and makeup designs for the student team and artist in residence.

It’s an incredible workload, but one which feeds her creativity and keeps her inspired year after year.

The 3D-printed wolf mask is another favourite piece, while Rapunzel’s wig presented another challenge altogether.

‘The wig needed to work,’ she explains. ‘Rapunzel is in a tower with her wig. And then we have an extra piece that’s made that [the actors] used to climb.

So, it has to mimic her wig but not be attached to her.

‘Sometimes I get student helpers, which is nice. When I first started, I had one student, Louise Arcus, who was very interested and she helped me a lot. She designed a dance piece for SPIN, made it, and went on to WAAPA to do the course, and now she works at Santa Maria in the same role as me. Rather than teacher and student, we’re now colleagues and friends.’

Connected through Art CREATING A LASTING LEGACY FOR THE CLASS OF 2026

Designing and donning a Leavers jacket is a rite of passage for our Year 12 students.

While you will have seen this year’s striking design being worn proudly around campus (even in some very warm Bunuru weather!), you might not have had the opportunity to see their incredible custom lining, designed by Year 12 student, Finnlay: a proud Ballardong woman and talented artist.

Despite some initial reservations about sharing her work, Finnlay (pictured below) rose to the challenge and added an extra layer of meaning to a keepsake that will be treasured by her peers for years to come.

The experience has shown her the value in sharing her art, and she encourages others to do the same.

‘Creating this design is a huge milestone for me,’ says Finnlay, ‘and I think any student with artistic ability should feel proud to share their work.’

‘The design is more than just colours and shapes,’ she explains. ‘The large circle represents connection, and the symbols around it are Indigenous symbols for women. At first, I coloured each symbol in the House colours, which is why there are 8 of them.

Later I realised the colours separated us rather than bringing us together, so I removed them to create a stronger sense of unity.’

‘On the bottom right of the jumper is the Perth College crest. On the top left are small figures representing people, reminding us that no matter where we go after school, we will always stay connected.’

A thriving ecosySTEM Perth College’s STEaM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) Program empowers students to become capable innovators, engineers, scientists and digital creators.

From purpose-built learning spaces and cuttingedge equipment to links with universities and a wide range of clubs and academic competitions, the program has been carefully designed to cultivate curiosity at every age.

During our recent Technologies and Visual Arts (TAVA) Week, students from across the school were invited to participate in a smorgasbord of activities designed to engage and inspire.

Throughout the week, students from Pre-Primary through to Year 6 used their lunchtimes to get hands-on with robotics. Our amazing Senior and Junior School Innovation Captains teamed up to run the sessions, acting as mentors to help the younger students get their robots moving.

The workshops focused on coding and practical problem-solving. The Innovation Captains set up various challenges where students used Bee-Bots to learn the basics of navigation and direction by programming sequences to reach specific targets.

For the older primary years, the missions moved to Pro-Bots, which required a bit more precision; students had to apply their knowledge of measurement and angles to calculate distances and turns to create 2D shapes.

Outside the excitement of TAVA Week, our STEM Studio has been a hive of activity with students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 diving into hands-on lessons about space. To help bring the science of the universe to life, students met some characters along the way: Maya the Astronaut, Remi the Science Communicator, and Rosa the Alien.

Focusing on the science of forces, specifically gravity, push, and pull, students put theory into practice through several hands-on engineering challenges.

Some groups designed and tested parachutes to observe how air resistance (drag) opposes gravity to ensure a soft landing, while others built balloon rockets to explore how the force of escaping air creates a forward push.

The excitement continued with balloon car races, where students experimented with aerodynamics and friction, refining their designs to see which could travel the furthest across the floor. Seeing these scientific concepts come to life through their own designs made for a rewarding term of discovery and innovation in the STEM Studio.

Creating Connections through Art

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM: LORI PENSINI AT PERTH COLLEGE

This year, Perth College was delighted to welcome acclaimed Western Australian artist Lori Pensini as part of our Artist in Residence Program.

Lori is a nationally recognised artist, having been shortlisted for over 140 painting prizes and is recorded as Australia’s highest awarded artist 5 years running. Lori’s work explores identity, family history, rural life and the deep connections between people and the Australian landscape. Her paintings are known for their warmth, honesty and ability to tell powerful stories through colour, symbolism and character.

Throughout her residency, students from across the Senior School had the opportunity to work alongside Lori, gaining insight into both her artistic practice and the realities of life as a professional artist. Through a series of workshops and demonstrations, students explored painting techniques, composition, colour relationships and the development of personal concepts within their own work.

The residency provided a particular focus for our Year 10, 11 and 12 Visual Arts students, who refined their technical skills while developing a deeper understanding of how contemporary artists communicate ideas, emotions and perspectives through visual language. Younger students also benefited from Lori’s expertise, participating in charcoal drawing workshops that encouraged careful observation and an appreciation of movement through studies of birds.

Central to Lori’s approach was the importance of authenticity. Students were encouraged to experiment, take creative risks and draw on their own experiences and perspectives when developing artwork. Through these conversations and creative experiences, students gained confidence in their artistic voice while learning that art can be both deeply personal and universally understood.

Recognised nationally for her artistic achievements, Lori has been shortlisted for and received numerous prestigious art awards throughout her career. For students considering their own creative futures, the opportunity to learn directly from a practising Australian artist provided valuable insight into sustaining a professional artistic practice.

Reflecting on her time at Perth College, Lori spoke warmly of the generosity, enthusiasm and creativity of the students she encountered throughout the residency. She was particularly moved by the respectful engagement of students and the welcoming atmosphere of the College community.

The Artist in Residence Program is made possible through the generosity and dedication of the Perth College Fine Art Committee. For over 40 years, a committed team of volunteers has worked tirelessly to present the annual exhibition, bringing together established and emerging artists while raising funds to support arts initiatives across the School.

Through their efforts, the Fine Art Exhibition has become much more than a celebrated community event. It provides opportunities for students to engage with professional artists, experience creative practice firsthand and develop a deeper appreciation of the arts. Lori’s residency is a wonderful example of the impact this support makes possible.

Our Artist in Residence Program continues to create meaningful opportunities for students to connect with practising artists, enriching their understanding of contemporary art while fostering creativity, confidence and curiosity.

We thank Lori for sharing her time, expertise and passion with our students, and acknowledge the dedicated volunteers of the Fine Art Exhibition whose ongoing commitment continues to create meaningful artistic opportunities for current and future generations of Perth College students.

Life in Harmony CLAIRE CONDIPODERO ON TEACHING, PERFORMING AND SHARING A LOVE OF MUSIC

As students, it’s sometimes hard to imagine our teachers having lives outside of school - but the depth and breadth of the passions and interests of our staff, and their contributions outside the classroom, is one of the many things that make the Perth College community so unique and special.

Claire Condipodero has been teaching at Perth College since 2023 and balances her teaching career with the demands of life as a professional opera singer. It’s a juggle but sharing her passion for music with students from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12 during classroom music lessons, choirs, voice lessons and in her work directing the Junior School Musical makes it all worthwhile.

‘It is a privilege to watch students discover the joy of music at every stage of their development,’ says Claire.

‘Music teaches so many valuable skills – creativity, discipline, persistence and collaboration – and it is wonderful to see students grow in confidence through singing, playing instruments and performing together.

Performing in Carols in the Domain has been a particularly memorable experience for me. This year marked my second appearance with the Young Stars of Australian Opera, after first performing at the event in 2024. The opera singers are organized by Patrick Togher Artist Management, a Sydney-based opera agency, and I was delighted to be invited to perform on both occasions.

The original opportunity in 2024 was a case of being in the right place at the right time. I had been invited to audition for Opera Australia and caught up with a close friend who works as an opera agent with PTAM. He happened to be looking for a soprano to complete the opera group for Carols and asked if I would like to take part.

A career in the arts certainly requires talent, hard work and persistence, but sometimes a little luck plays a part too. I was thrilled to be invited back again in 2025. Having grown up watching Carols in the Domain each year, it was incredibly special for me to be part of such a beloved Christmas tradition.

‘Not every student will go on to become a professional musician, but the skills and love of music they develop during their school years will stay with them for life. And for those who dream of pursuing music professionally, I love encouraging them to believe that a career in music really is possible — and showing them that yes, they can.’

Following her incredible performance at Carols in the Domain in Sydney in 2024 and 2025, Claire has already had an incredibly busy year of performances in 2026.

‘Earlier this year I made my role debut as Susanna in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro with West Australian Opera as part of Perth Festival’s Secret Opera. In a fun twist, the location of the opera is kept secret until the day of the performance – and this year it was IKEA! The audience moved through different parts of the store for each act and even enjoyed Swedish meatballs at interval.

‘More recently I performed in West Australian Opera’s production of La Traviata at His Majesty’s Theatre. Later this year I will perform in two further productions in the West Australian Opera 2026 season, including Eugene Onegin (Tchaikovsky) and Roméo et Juliette (Charles Gounod). I will be soprano soloist in Mozart’s Requiem with Perth Symphonic Chorus and will also perform the role of Papagena in Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

Sparking Our Spirit THREE STUDENT LEADERS REFLECT ON LEADERSHIP, CONNECTION AND COMMUNITY

Leadership at Perth College takes many forms. Whether in sport, the arts or academics, our student leaders play an important role in creating opportunities, building connection and encouraging others to get involved.

As the year continues, three of our Year 12 leaders reflect on the experiences, achievements and moments that have shaped their leadership journey so far.

Eilidh - Sports Captain For Sports Captain Eilidh, leadership has been about creating opportunities for participation and celebrating the achievements of others.

Working alongside fellow Sports Captain Ibe, Eilidh has helped introduce initiatives including a sports equipment bin and a dedicated SPACE page recognising student sporting achievements. She has particularly enjoyed seeing students of all ages embrace opportunities to challenge themselves and support one another.

The House Carnivals have been among the highlights of the year, bringing the community together through competition, House spirit and camaraderie.

One particularly memorable milestone was the introduction of Perth College’s first whole-school Cross Country carnival, which united students from Years 3 to 12 in a shared celebration of participation and perseverance.

“Being Sports Captain has been an extremely rewarding experience,” Eilidh said. “Supporting, guiding and connecting with students across all year levels has been incredibly special.”

As Visual Arts Captain, Maddi has enjoyed celebrating creativity while building connections across the wider Arts community.

For Academic Captain Isabella, leadership has centred on fostering curiosity, participation and connection across the School.

Working closely with the Music, Dance and Drama Captains, she has developed friendships and memories that will extend well beyond her final year of school. One of her highlights has been being involved in the School production, Into the Woods, which brought together students from multiple year groups and disciplines.

Together with fellow Academic Captain Chloe, Isabella has been involved in a wide range of academic initiatives, including Year 10 subject selection events, the Great Debate and Have Sum Fun. She has also enjoyed supporting co-curricular opportunities such as Titration and the Junior School Chess Club.

Maddi has also enjoyed participating in TAVA Week activities, particularly judging the Junior School colouring competition and presenting awards at assembly.

Looking ahead, she is especially excited about House Arts Day and the opportunity to work alongside Year 10 students as they bring this year’s House Banner themes to life.

“It has been such a rewarding experience,” Maddi said. “I am very grateful for the opportunity to serve as Visual Arts Captain and celebrate all that our Arts community has achieved this year.”

Among her proudest moments has been seeing Perth College students represent the School with distinction at competitions including the Da Vinci Decathlon and World Scholar’s Cup. “Being part of the Officials Team has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my high school journey,” Isabella reflected. “I feel incredibly lucky to work with students across both the Junior and Senior School and help create a sense of connection within our community.”

Together, these student leaders embody the spirit of Perth College: capable, courageous and caring young women committed to making a positive difference in the lives of others.

Building Community Through Connection From sharing breakfast with mums, grandmothers and special people, to dancing the night away with friends, students and families have enjoyed several opportunities to connect this year thanks to the energy and enthusiasm of the Friends of PC. Following its revitalisation, the Friends of PC have enthusiastically created opportunities for our community to come together, build relationships and celebrate the moments that make school life so memorable.

One of the highlights of the semester was the annual Mother’s Day Breakfast, which welcomed over 400 students and their mums, grandmothers and special people for a morning of connection and celebration. The event provided an opportunity to pause and acknowledge the important role these women play in the lives of our students, while sharing conversation, laughter and time together before the school day began.

The sense of community continued at the Junior School Disco, where the Anne Hairsine Studio was transformed into a vibrant dance floor filled with music, excitement, plenty of enthusiastic dancers and a lot of fluoro.

Events such as these are about much more than a breakfast or a disco. They help strengthen the relationships that sit at the heart of the Perth College experience, creating opportunities for students, families and staff to connect beyond the classroom.

The Friends of PC network extends well beyond these events. Through our Parent Liaison program, families are supported and connected within their year groups, while dedicated sub-groups including Friends of Rowing, Friends of Music and Friends of Netball provide valuable support for students, staff and programs across the School. Together, these volunteers play an important role in building community, encouraging participation and creating opportunities for families to become involved in school life.

As we look ahead to the second half of the year, we thank every volunteer who contributes their time, energy and expertise to Perth College. Their collective efforts help create the welcoming, connected and vibrant community that makes Perth College such a special place.
