How to choose the right University or College So it’s senior year, you and your child have started scrolling through university and college webpages. Their friends are all talking about where they plan to go and what they plan to study.

You, the supportive parent in the room, want to help steer your child in the right direction.

You know that picking a university or college that’s the right fit is about more than school rankings, or proximity to the nearest potential internship.

Post-secondary education is about coursework as much as it is about intangibles such as a healthy social life, access to funding, extracurriculars and any number of variables that help shape someone’s personal and professional outlook as they enter into adulthood. It can be a complicated decision-making process to navigate for both parent and child. So how can you be supportive?

Here are a few tips:

Create a list Canada is brimming with amazing post-secondary schools to the point that it can feel daunting to even begin applying. There are specialized programs in small towns with as much to offer as globally ranked programs in the biggest cities. Start by helping your child make a list of schools that match their interest. Remember to take into consideration more than just the crest of the school—it’s about fit.

If your child is incredibly interested in marine biology, including options for schools on the Atlantic or Pacific coast might be more valuable than, say, being cooped up in a classroom near Toronto’s Dundas Square.

federal loan programs based on need, and many institutions have various scholarships and bursaries available for incoming students. Colleges and universities have staff dedicated to answering questions about funding.

Make sure to help your child explore their options, and to weigh things out before they make their decision.

Give your child some space This may be a daunting time for both you and your child. It can be as exciting as it is stressful, and as liberating as it is frustrating. It’s your job as a parent to gauge when your kid needs support, and when they might need some space to make their own decisions. This is, after all, a big step into adulthood, and part of that for your child involves making decisions independent of anyone other than themselves.

Ultimately, a supportive parent’s job is to listen, give honest advice, but then be able to respect your child and their autonomy when it comes to their future. We know you want the best for them, every parent does. Trust that they also want the best for themselves.

Work-Integrated Learning takes many forms at Sheridan Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) is a vital component of the Sheridan student experience.

Hands-on, applied experience complements students’ in-class learning and helps prepare them for future employment. Sheridan offers its students more than 7,000 WIL opportunities every year. These include apprenticeship, field placement/ experience, mandatory professional practice, cooperative education and internship.

Sheridan works to find new opportunities for students to harness their skills in meaningful and purposeful ways. One such innovative opportunity – Co-op on the EDGE – allows entrepreneurial students to work on their own businesses while completing co-op requirements.

Co-op on the EDGE Instead of going out into the workforce for a co-op placement at an existing business, students can head to the Entrepreneurship Discovery & Growth Engine (EDGE) at Sheridan’s Hazel McCallion Campus in Mississauga to create their own.

Co-op on the EDGE students dedicate 35 hours a week to their ventures, attend sessions focused on topics like market research and finessing a sales pitch, and participate in consultations with faculty mentors and industry guests.

Business student Gursimar Anand was one of the first to participate in Co-op on the EDGE. He eagerly signed on to the program to help improve his Bramptonbased retail store Celebration Season.

“The experience helped me plan out the best route for my business,” he says.

“Working with EDGE puts students in the driver’s seat,” says Renee Devereaux, who leads EDGE as its director of entrepreneurship and changemaking.

“We provide support and guidance, but they’re ultimately responsible for the success of their venture.”

Co-op on the EDGE program lead ChrisBeth Cowie understands why students like Anand are drawn to this WIL opportunity. “Entrepreneurship is a way to establish something for yourself in the changing industry landscape,” she says.

“The workforce doesn’t look the same way it did for our parents.”

The experience culminates in a pitch event at which the co-op students present their ventures to mentors, staff and industry partners.

Sheridan is proud of its student track record for excellence in WIL. In five of

the last seven years, a Sheridan student has won national Co-op Student of the Year honours. IT student Lawrence Young won the 2019 Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning (CEWIL) Canada award and at the provincial level, social services student Cristina Pereira won the inaugural Work-Integrated Learning Student of the Year Award from Education at Work Ontario.

Work towards a Successful Future There are many avenues to take when it comes to post-secondary education.

It is important to remember that a specific university or college is not the only option for every individual.

All schools have a lot to offer and it is worthwhile to take all into consideration when determining your academic goals.

Factors to Consider Before students can make an informed post-secondary decision, they must consider all factors. Firstly, it is important for prospective students to research their chosen career field before deciding if attending a college or university is best. There are many resources available online outlining the high school level requirements for admission to post secondary programs, and the types of careers college and university programs lead to. Each

institution will provide students with a different set of qualifications, even for similar programs. Co-op placements in school are also a fantastic way to try out a field you may be interested in, while establishing connections that may help you down the road.

Students should also take their financial situation into consideration. Tuitions may differ slightly depending on the program and Institution and typically University fees will be higher than college. In addition, the length of a university program can take between

3 to 5 years to complete, while most college programs may only take 2 years.

For those considering post secondary in Ontario they are fortunate to have a diverse wealth of choices that can appeal to any student. Those who thrive in a more intimate setting may prefer to look at a small school, others may like the action in the middle of large downtowns. Simply put, todays colleges and universities provide students with greater opportunities to study and work in a specific field than ever before.

It’s Never too early to start thinking about a post-secondary plan With so many resources in Ontario, young students can do their research and start asking questions There are few decisions in life bigger than choosing a college or university, and the range of options can be daunting. There are 24 colleges and 21 universities in Ontario offering more than 3,000 programs of study, so where to start?

The Ontario Universities’ Info website and the Ontario Colleges website are the best places to get underway. They provide checklists, key dates and links to every university and college in the province.

“The OUInfo website last year got more than two million hits and it’s had 14 million hits since September 2010, so we know it’s a huge resource,” said Deanna Underwood, manager of communications and events for the Ontario Universities Application Centre.

“The information there is updated by all Ontario universities and goes live at the end of August for the coming school year.”

There are also reputable rankings of colleges and universities in publications such as Macleans, Times Higher Education and QS. All of that will give you a lay of the land and help narrow down your options. The next step is getting out from behind your computer.

Grade 12 student Tawhid Ahmed plans to attend post-secondary fairs, take campus tours and maybe even visit one of his older brother’s classes as he makes a decision about what comes after high school for him.

His father wants Tawhid to study at university but he’s also considering college.

“They’ve told me that it’s important I find something I am passionate about.”

Trish Wilson, head of student services at BCSS, says some parents are still of the mindset that university is the most ideal path, but that’s based on outdated notions.

“I like hands-on. I can’t just sit at a desk. I need to do something with my hands.”

“If a student wants to go to college, they should get their parents to visit the campus to look at the facilities and talk to faculty. A lot of parents don’t understand the close relationship between colleges and universities.”

He’s leaning towards engineering and has relied heavily on advice from guidance counsellors at his Hamilton high school, Bernie Custis Secondary School.

Educational and career counsellor Edie Kaus says many colleges offer degreepath programs that are great for students who need practical, hands-on learning with smaller class sizes.

Start early Students must submit their applications in January and February of their graduating year. Leaving all the research until Grade 12 isn’t feasible and will only lead to feeling overwhelmed and stressed and rushing a very important decision.

“There are so many programs out there and so many different models for how they are delivered. It’s so difficult to keep up with all of it,” said Kaus. “It’s a full-time job for me to do that.”

She starts working with students mid-way through their Grade 10 year.

That’s an important time because Grade 11 courses are the first grades examined by post-secondary schools and lead to prerequisites for first year.

She says students who have a program in mind should look at the courses they will be taking, the kinds of electives that are open to them, whether they can do a co-op. They should even look at the course outlines to see kinds of assignments they will be doing, and the methods of evaluations. Is it multiple choice tests or group projects?

“This is a very expensive endeavour, so put the necessary time into it,” says Kaus, a former leader of high school guidance departments.

Take advantage of fairs The fall brings one-stop college and university fairs for prospective students.

The Ontario Universities’ Fair (ouf.ca) held each September and the Ontario College Information Fair (ocif.ca) in

October are both held in Toronto and allow high school students and their families to meet faculty, students and staff from admissions, residents, sports and other co-curricular programs from each institution under one roof.

Both events feature information sessions about programs, admission requirements, paying for education, career planning, the application process and student life.

Don’t be shy, Wilson tells students.

It’s your chance to interview your potential choices.

“Start writing down questions so that when you have the opportunity to talk to someone you are prepared. Be organized, keep a notebook with your questions and answers.”

Not sure what to ask? The Ontario Universities Fair website includes questions to ask yourself about your strengths, interests, and goals and to ask university representatives, students and alumni about programs, finances, and campus life.

Universities and colleges hold open houses where faculty and students are available to talk to current students, and all labs and classrooms, residences and campus amenities are open to explore. You will know after spending a few hours wandering and asking questions whether a campus is a place you could picture yourself for the next three or four years.

“Anything within a few hours’ drive is worth the effort to see in person. You really want a sense of whether you feel comfortable,” said Wilson.

If you can’t make an open house, students and their families can also book private campus tours hosted by current students.

While a campus visit is ideal, it sometimes can’t be achieved. So be sure to read thoroughly about the

dorms, food, recreational and cocurricular activities on campus. Look at photos and watch videos. Try to track down current students or recent alumni to ask them questions.

Embrace this time Kate Hatcher, a student success officer at BCSS, helps young people manage the transitions into and out of high school.

“When students are panicking about all the choices and decisions they have to make, I tell them that (post-secondary) is an amazing experience and will be the best time of their life. Embrace it and know that there all kinds of supports along the way.”

Recruiters from the universities and colleges also take to the road to visit high schools across the province, offering presentations and opportunities for students to ask questions. Be sure to ask your guidance counsellors for a schedule of visits.

Pietra and Ana, two new undergraduate students discuss their experience to date and their motivations for attending DeGroote.

Pietra K. Growing up in Whistler, B.C., Pietra knew coming to McMaster would be a big adjustment but was surprised at how quickly she felt comfortable in her new environment.

Recruited to play on the women’s varsity basketball team, she remembers touring the school in February and meeting an Associate Dean who stopped to say hello to her assistant coach.

“He spent the next five minutes asking me about my plans and talking to me about the school,” she recalls. “Anyone else in that position could have just said hello and walked on by. Right away I felt like people here go out of their way to make the school feel like home.”

When asked about what drew her to DeGroote specifically, she mentions the values of collaboration, generosity and innovation as key factors.

Ana K. “Those are all things that are important to me, but it was really cool to feel them as soon as I stepped on campus,” Pietra says. “I already knew that DeGroote would be an amazing school, but as I learned more about it and talked to people who went here, I found that those values really stood out.”

Pietra credits basketball for teaching her how to problem-solve and persevere, two skills that she knows will help her as a student. “During a game, when things aren’t going your way, you have to push through no matter how you feel,” she says.

Already, she identifies the importance of teamwork and how it will translate from basketball court to business.

To hear Pietra tell it, “teamwork is such an important skill … being able to share ideas and work through problems is so valuable.”

Growing up, Ana always knew university, and McMaster specifically, was in her future.

“I’m the first person in my family to go to university,” she proclaims. “My parents were really happy that I decided to come to McMaster!”

Gaining Life Experiences at Fanshawe College A medical mission to Guatemala by a team of respiratory therapy students and faculty at Fanshawe College illustrates the College’s commitment to innovative learning experiences.

The group of 13 students and three faculty members helped out at four Antigua clinics for a week in June.

“It was eye-opening for all of us,” said respiratory therapy professor and mission organizer Yvonne Drasovean.

“Guatemala is a poor country and the clinics we worked in didn’t have gloves, masks or infection control. One of the clinics had no running water. It was an urgent care centre that sees everything from kids with colds to women in labour.”

The students had to stretch outside their field, pitching in with triage and patient assessments, immunizations, even helping with dental extractions.

Some students, who are all in their third year of their program, worked in prenatal and pediatric clinics, others worked with seniors.

“If they were shocked, you wouldn’t have known it,” Drasovean said of the students. “They just dove right in and whatever was asked of them they did … It was amazing for me to see how adaptable they were. We were proud to see our students perform at that level.”

Just one week in Guatemala taught lessons that will last a lifetime, say the students. The experience was humbling and life changing and will make her a better health care professional, says Tina Nguyen.

“The communication barrier gave me a new appreciation for immigrants in Canada and made me realize that so

many citizens who have immigrated to Canada struggle with this every day.”

The hope is that the mission inspires a life of giving back, says Drasovean, who is already planning a second trip next spring.

The mission was a signature innovative learning experience, says David Belford, executive director of Innovation Village at Fanshawe College.

“This is something the students will remember for the rest of their lives.

It exposes them to something new, engages their skills, and applies all their learning.”

Innovation Village is emerging in a number of ways, including a reimagined library, experiential learning, through global projects and applied research, and building essential future employability skills, including global citizenship, resiliency, creative thinking and social intelligence.

Student Keanna Alcock says although the Guatemala trip was outside her comfort zone, her program prepared her in terms of skills. She wasn’t prepared to say goodbye.

“The tears, laughs and one last salsa dance with each patient filled my heart with pure joy and love while my eyes filled with tears.”

Student Sandra Zaretsky said she came home with plenty of memories, a broader view of the world, and a new appreciation for life.

“Overall, I wanted a new experience that would be rewarding and eyeopening and that’s exactly what I got from this wonderful opportunity. One thing that will stay with me about this trip is just how kind the Guatemalan people are and how happy they are helping those in need even though they have so little.”

The bonds formed in just a week were powerful, said student Andrea Boni.

“I do not think many of us were prepared for the emotions we felt when saying goodbye…It will be a moment I will remember for the rest of my life.”

Anyone provided with an opportunity to learn abroad should take it, she says.

“You don’t realize how much you can learn about yourself while learning about other people.”

ST. CLAIR OFFERS PATHWAY TO U.S. DEGREE St. Clair College’s motto, Start Here Go Anywhere, was strengthened in 2019 with the signing of five articulation agreements that allow its graduates to pursue a degree in a major metropolitan U.S. city while still living in Canada.

The agreements signed between Windsor’s St. Clair College and Wayne State University, located in the renewed urban setting of downtown Detroit, will give college graduates access to degrees in unparalleled timeframes of one to two years.

“Education is all about pathways and continuous lifelong learning,” St. Clair College President Patti France said.

The programs involved in the articulation agreement include: Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Technology, Interior design and Marketing. Additionally, there are tracks to graduate degrees in each of the program areas.

“Everything we are doing through these agreements is designed to

make it possible for St. Clair students to complete a four-year degree at a research-intensive institution,” Wayne State University President Dr. M. Roy Wilson said. “By transferring to Wayne State University, St. Clair students can get international experience close to home and build a resume that will make them attractive to employers on both sides of the river.”

The Detroit River divides the city of Detroit and the city of Windsor.

Many St. Clair College grads who go on to study at Wayne State University commute daily from Windsor, taking the short trip through the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel or the Ambassador Bridge.

St. Clair College students will receive Wayne State’s Great Lakes Tuition Award, a special tuition rate for Ontario residents. Through the Great Lakes Award, St. Clair students will pay only 10 per cent more than Michigan residents, and about 50 per cent less than other international students.

St. Clair College has more than 50 articulation and pathway agreements with 23 post-secondary institutions in Ontario, Canada and other parts of the world, providing students with solid, hands-on college credentials and university degrees. Through these agreements, graduates may receive transfer credit for several courses, a full semester or a full year (or more) toward a university degree.

St. Clair College has over 110 programs, focused on engineering technology, skilled trades, health sciences, business, information technology, community studies and media, art and design.

Credentials include diplomas, certificates, advanced diplomas, graduate certificates and, now, degrees.

A new bachelor degree program in Social Justice and Legal Studies was introduced in 2019 and another in Business Administration (Information Communication Technology) will be introduced for fall 2020.

All full-time programs offer workintegrated learning, such as placements, capstone projects, internships, practicums or co-op.

St. Clair College’s athletics are secondto-none, with varsity teams in baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, basketball, golf and cross country. There’s also a varsity esports team.

The College’s new $21.5 million Sports Park, which will be complete in 2020, will be the envy of the province and a place where athletes will love to play.

The latest in advances to student life on campus, the Sports Park will include a 1,500-seat soccer stadium, a 650- seat women’s softball stadium, tennis and beach volleyball courts.

In addition, the College’s $25-million Sportsplex is the envy of varsity athletes everywhere, featuring a triple gym, indoor track and fitness centre.

Going off to university or college can be incredibly exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. Here are a few things to include on your packing list to make those first few months away from home that much more comfortable.

Nothing starts off a school morning better than a hot cup of coffee or tea in your favourite mug. You’re going to wake up in an unfamiliar dorm, student housing unit or rental basement apartment. Maybe you’re across from that snoring roommate you just met at orientation. Without a doubt, you’ll want to reach for a touch of homely familiarity. So, grab that mug with the sleepy owl on it that says, “I’m not a morning person” and get your fix.

We can’t stress this one enough.

Like most incoming students, sweatpants will become your informal school uniform. Writing a paper late into the night?

Sweatpants. Late to class?

Sweatpants. Hanging out with friends in the common room?

If you’re off to school anywhere in Canada, chances are the first time you’ll go home is Thanksgiving. Or, Christmas break if you’re really in it for the long run. All those light sweaters you pack might serve you well for the first few weeks of September, but they won’t do much in late November when even penguins are hiding from the cold.

Okay, this one is a bit of a no brainer.

But it’s one of those things that’s always worth reiterating. DON’T forget your headphones. You’ll need them in the library when you’re watching YouTube explainers on that reading you missed, as much as you’ll need them when your roommate is baby-talking to their dog on Skype.

Accidents happen. And so do colds.

You can never be too careful, and the last thing you’ll want to do when you’re lying in bed with a flu is go to the corner store to pick up medication. Have a few of the basics on hand for when you really need them. And remember, you’re an adult now. So, no one can tell you not to get the SpongeBob Band-Aids. That’s your prerogative and yours alone.

Work-integrated learning opportunities, ranging from placements, internships, applied research projects and more, help Humber students become career ready. Applied Research projects are one of the ways students can put their knowledge into practice, gain experience and form connections with industry.

For example, Humber in partnership with the Toronto Police Services, conducted research about neighbourhood policing.

Students and educators in the Faculty of Social and Community Services worked as researchers to develop focus groups and compile data. The police used the research findings to inform a pilot project to help address communication challenges, homelessness, mental health and more within their communities. By gathering community knowledge, students are able to work with police services first-hand and help find ways to reduce crime and improve trust and relationships between communities and their neighbourhood officers.

Humber’s social and community service programs allow students to join a network of community partners that provide a wide range of opportunities for students.

Students gain relevant industry experience throughout their studies at home and in places like Kenya and Guatemala, giving them an opportunity to explore their career pathways and test their skills in new settings.

With state-of-the-art facilities like the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation, students collaborate with industry partners using the latest technology. The building is designed to inspire innovation, support skills development and promote science, technology, engineering, art and math outreach with industry and community partners. Humber’s Tzu Chi Clinic of Chinese Medicine is the first postsecondary, on-campus clinic that provides students with hands-on, inter-professional education. The clinic provides the community with access to regulated high-quality Traditional Chinese Medicine therapies and elevates the standards of practice in the field. Humber is also home to the Humber Room, a full service, studentrun restaurant that offers a casual fine dining experience.

7That Strategies Successful Students Use

to Stay

Focused Post-secondary is much different than high school.

That may seem obvious, but it’s important to be prepared for what will be expected of you. Students who aren’t prepared for the heavy work load, longer classes, and increased independence can find themselves struggling to adjust.

■■

1. Find a way to organize

The volume and speed of the work that comes in university and college takes many students by surprise. It’s important to stay organized and on top of readings, assignments, labs, tests and exams. Use a calendar – either electronic or paper-based – to write down due dates and to-do lists.

Journalism student Isabella Krzykala, who graduated from Sheridan College, says a day planner “saved my life. I wrote down everything I had to do and checked things off as I did them. It was my brain in one book.”

Maddy Patterson, a special events management student at George Brown College, goes through the course outline for each class and writes down all the due dates for the semester. Each Sunday, she writes a list of what she needs to accomplish

for the upcoming week, incorporating her part-time work schedule and laying out a plan for the nights she’s free.

“My visual outline of my work really helps me stay ahead of things.”

2. Focus on focus

Krzykala says at first it was hard to sit still and concentrate during three-hour classes. But she forced herself to adjust by answering and asking questions and writing down notes. Both require active listening, enhance learning, and help to build a relationship with instructors. Bring along water and healthy snacks to stay fuelled up.

Limit mobile distractions while studying by leaving your phone in another room, disconnecting your laptop from Wi-Fi, or at least limiting how much you’ll check social media or

texts to once an hour or so. “It’s easy to look at it without even thinking about it,” said Krzykala. “It’s just out of habit but it interrupts your concentration.”

3. Don’t procrastinate

Leaving work until the last minute increases stress and decreases quality. Krzykala always starts assignments as soon as she gets them, even if it’s just 20 minutes. “There were a couple of times I left things too late and I got overwhelmed and stayed up too late and it was terrible.

If you start everything on time, get into a good rhythm and use your time right, it shouldn’t happen too much.”

Patterson says it’s important to make good use of breaks between classes because the pace of work in college can be deceiving. “You can feel ahead one week and behind the next.”

4. The right place

Find the place that allows you to work the most productively – an office at home, a dorm room, a library

or a coffee shop. “I know the room in my house where I work best,” said Patterson. “I go in there with the mindset that I will work for this amount of time and not do anything else.”

5. F ind a good group to work with

Seek out relationships with fellow students who share your motivation.

You’ll learn from one another and reinforce good habits in each other. “Not everyone has the same initiative or cares as much about their education,” said Patterson. “Group work can be a challenge. Learn who you work well with and who shares your work ethic.”

6. Set goals

Think about the marks you want to achieve. You may find you have to

readjust but it’s always better to have something to shoot for than to just hope for the best. And when you reach your goals, reward yourself.

Maybe that’s with a fancy coffee, a dessert with friends or a few hours off from studying.

But Krzykala, who now studies journalism at Ryerson University, warns against being too hard on yourself. “A bad mark should not ruin your day. My mom told me that I’m going to school to learn. I’m not an expert. So, I try to learn from it when I get a mark I don’t like.”

Creative Ways to Fund Your Post-Secondary Education Attending university or college is an exciting prospect. However, once the initial thrill subsides, parents and students are now faced with the challenge of dealing with a costly tuition bill. Fortunately, there are many avenues students can take to help cover this expense. Online portals like Scholly and Scholarship Canada help introduce prospective students to a wide range of scholarships, grants, and bursaries prior to start of the new school year. In these instances, financial aid is awarded to individuals based on necessity, academic standing, volunteer experience, amongst other criteria.

Part-Time Jobs: One of the most conventional ways to earn a steady income is to secure a part-time job. Luckily, there are several positions available to students conveniently located on campus. For instance, students can apply for opportunities at the cafeteria, bookstore, or library. These jobs will also help build technical skills and provide valuable experience in the workplace.

Even if your tuition is paid for by parents, a bank loan, or scholarship, there are still several expenses you will encounter as a student. Fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities to make extra cash without sacrificing too much time away from your studies.

Start Saving Early: Call the bank in order to help fund your tuition. Students can save for their education by opening a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP). An RESP account will accumulate taxfree interest and can remain an active account for up to 31 years. Mom, Dad

Buy and Resell Textbooks: Textbooks are costly but essential materials for academic success. Students who are looking to score a deal can help you earn quick cash by purchasing your used textbooks. At the end of each school year, you can buy textbooks from other students and resell these books to new students during orientation week. Through this method, you can potentially earn more money than reselling the same books back to the campus bookstore.

Become a Tutor: If you excel in a specific subject, consider using your skills to help others and earn money for your services. There are many students who struggle with understanding the course material and often require help outside of the classroom. Tutoring is an excellent opportunity to help a fellow student in need and to help sharpen your skills as a teacher.

Delivery Services: If you own a car or bicycle, consider a job in food delivery. There are many opportunities for employment in this industry, as restaurants often employ students for their take-out services. While working in the kitchen or behind a cash register are valuable experiences, delivering food may help you earn more money as a result of earning tips on top of a regular wage.

Publish an eBook: Students have plenty of experience in researching and writing,

making this an ideal option to bring in some extra money. For example, the Amazon Kindle store makes it easy for students of all skill levels to write and publish an eBook.

Experience in the Workplace Begins in University or College It can be a challenge to juggle school, social and work commitments, especially for students who are entering their first year of post-secondary. This type of schedule takes a great deal of focus, dedication, and time management, but those who can master the formula will benefit in many ways.

While earning an income is a significant advantage to working a part-time job during the school year, students also have the opportunity to learn valuable skill sets and gain experience in the workplace.

By using a little creativity, you can make some extra cash while unlocking your own potential both inside and outside of the classroom.

Degrees with Co-op – A Triple Threat

By Sheri Levine Take the hands-on learning of a college, add the theoretical style of a university, mix it with real-life experience, and you have a college Bachelor’s degree with a paid co-op placement.

“There are so many advantages to graduating with a degree with co-op,” says David Hall, Manager of Cooperative Education at Algonquin College. “You could call it a triple threat. If you get a degree from Algonquin College you’re going to get your theory and you’re going to get your technical skills. Plus, you’re going to get that chance to practise, hone, refine, professionalize, and

really set yourself up for success to launch your career when you graduate.”

Algonquin College offers a variety of Honours Bachelor’s degrees with co-op, including Commerce, Interior Design, Public Safety, Building Science and new this fall, Automation and Robotics. A Bachelor of Technology in Business Systems Development (Honours) and Bachelor of Technology in Digital Health (Honours) will be introduced next fall. Algonquin plans to add about 10 more degrees with co-op over the next few years.

Yuxiang Jiang graduated this past June from Algonquin College with

an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management.

He did his co-op at the Westin Beijing Financial Street Hotel working as an HR Officer and Trainer.

“A program with co-op definitely gave me motivation to gain real-life experience before formally stepping into society,” he says. Earlier this year, Jiang and two of his classmates

placed second out of more than 500 competitors at an international student competition for hotel innovation. “The real-life experience in the program helped the three of us come up with such a great idea together,” he says adding, “I loved the class dynamic.

The professors constantly created discussion opportunities so that every student could participate and get feedback.”

Advancing artificial intelligence at Durham College As the nature of work evolves and organizations begin to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into their business systems, a new industry is quickly emerging – and it’s already thriving. From improving automation in manufacturing to solving complex health-care problems facing our society, AI is advancing at a rapid rate – creating new opportunities for businesses and new jobs and career paths for the workforce of tomorrow.

In response to this technological shift, Durham College (DC) launched its Hub for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence for Business Solutions, known more commonly as the AI Hub, in 2018. With a growing team of researchers and student AI practitioners, the AI Hub helps smalland-medium-sized enterprises and

non-profit organizations uncover crucial business insights through applied research projects, providing them with intelligent and autonomous solutions for greater productivity and growth.

Talks and the Enable AI Summit for professionals to further advance their skillset, all while providing student researchers with opportunities to gain client-centric, real-world industry experience.

These projects are making a difference in the lives of community members by improving quality of life. In early 2019, researchers began to test the power of AI to make emergency room wait time predictions at Lakeridge Health using Machine Learning. With a goal of improving operational decision-making to enhance the patient’s experience, the project will result in a prototype for an AI-infused recommender system.

This fall, as a natural extension of and complement to the AI Hub, the college welcomed its inaugural class in the Artificial Intelligence Analysis, Design and Implementation (AIDI) graduate certificate program. The first graduate certificate program of its kind in Canada, AIDI focuses on enterprise AI, including off-the-shelf solutions and proprietary AI. “On one of my first shifts my patient coded and needed to be sent to the ICU. As nerve wracking as that was, I knew what to do and how to keep calm and composed,” Olivia said. “We practiced codes so many times in the nursing simulation lab at SLC, our professors ensured we had enough practice.”

Olivia and her fellow students received this expert training in the brand new, state-of-the-art simulation labs on all three SLC campuses, part of a major upgrade to the college’s teaching and learning facilities designed to offer the best experiential learning opportunities.

“I chose the collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing at SLC because I wanted to learn in a smaller classroom and develop relationships with my professors,” Olivia said. “I’m proud to call them colleagues now and I would never hesitate to ask for their guidance.

I had two jobs lined up before I even graduated!”

From High School to Career Students have options. Take the time to give yourself the room to learn and grow.

Grade 12 student Najma Wuusuf says she once thought she would pursue nursing but she’s now looking at social sciences with an open mind about where that will lead her.

“My plan in first year is to take as many courses as I can and figure it out from there.”

That approach has her feeling more relaxed about the choices ahead than she thought she would be.

“For my career path, I feel like I might go through several ideas because I’m kind of indecisive,” said the 17-year-old who attends Bernie Custis Secondary School (BCSS), a new high school in Hamilton. “So I will try out as many courses as I can.”

Many students haven’t settled on a career when they enter postsecondary and that’s just fine, says Trish Wilson, head of student services at BCSS. She urges young people to be open to exploring courses across faculties, and to be unafraid to change their path if they find it’s not for them.

“Colleges and universities work so closely together now and you can transfer credits so much more now that you used to be able to,” she said. There are also many agreements in place between colleges and universities that

allow students to earn a diploma and a degree, sometimes at the same time.

About 43 per cent of university students change their major or minor in the first two years of study, says Edie Kaus, an educational and career counsellor.

“I tell students to remember that college or university is your next stop, it’s not what you are going to do for the rest of your life. It’s the beginning of your path, so start with what you really enjoy and follow the path as it reveals itself.”

Consider a career counsellor A career counsellor has timely, relevant and detailed information about what is happening in postsecondary education and the job

market. Counsellors provide honest evaluations of necessary marks, career prospects, and working conditions in any field you are thinking about.

They also have a range of career assessment tests that determine jobs that could fit well with your interests, strengths and personality.

“The students really get to know themselves better and that helps me match them with the right schools and programs,” says Kaus.

“This is a really difficult choice to make at 17 years old.”

That is compounded by making decisions based on unrealistic expectations, misinformation or rumours, or the wishes of others that don’t reflect your own interests, says Kaus.

Talk to people in your fields of interest Talk to your parents’ fields, relatives, neighbours, your friends’ parents and anyone else you can about their jobs. If there is an industry you’re interested in, reach out to someone in that position and find out about their dayto-day responsibilities, the potential career trajectory, and what it takes to succeed.

Allow some time and space There is no point in forcing yourself to make a decision. After all, it’s the rest of your life you’re talking about, so give yourself time and space to explore.

Many university programs in first year offer a wide sampling of social sciences, sciences, humanities or technology and colleges offer fundamentals programs that touch on a variety of fields.
